ACCESS Roaring Fork “SECONDSHIFT” Riverside Middle School (RIV) After-School Program SecondShift is an after-school program that provides a safe and positive setting in which middle school students may learn and grow. The classes offered are educational, supportive and fun.

RIV SECONDSHIFT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS WAGGLE CLUB  Students can work on homework on Waggle for math and language arts. Limit of 20 students.  Taught by Mr. Davis. Offered 1 day per week. Class is 1 hour. ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR ALL (7TH & 8TH GRADE ONLY)  Students who come will receive help in math or any subject area that they are needing additional support in. Students can complete assignments and get caught up with school work! Class can be taken one to three days a week. Class is 1.5 hrs. Taught by Ms. Plummer. WRITING DOWN THE BONES: CREATIVE WRITING CLASS  Learn to free the writer within and discover your personal voice. You will write every day and create a published work of your writing pieces.  Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1.5 hours. Taught by Ms. Espinoza. WE’RE NOT GETTING ZAPPED TUTORING WITH MR. WHALEY.  Come and get caught up on any missing assignments in the classroom. If there are no missing assignments, we will work on sharpening our skills, to give us an advantage in school. We will not get ZAPped. We will persevere, give our best and learn.  Class can be taken 1 to 3 days a week. Class is 1 hr. Taught by Mr. Whaley

CHESS CLUB  This after school activity will focus on rules, ethics, special strategies, intellectual gains, and enjoyment of the game of chess. Students will work with both real life chess boards as well as computer generated chess against the computer.  Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1 hour. Taught by Mr. Foreback. MINECRAFT CLUB  Students will learn how build houses, towns and many more items on a Minecraft server. Students will also learn how to maneuver around Mine craft. Violence will NOT be allowed. STUDENTS MUST HAVE A MINECRAFT MEMBERSHIP.  Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1 hour. Maximum of 12 students. Taught by Mr. Davis. SEWING  Students will learn the basics of sewing: how to select fabrics and patterns, how to pin and cut out a garment, how to use a sewing machine and end with constructing their own pajama bottoms and pillow. Space is limited to first 8 students to sign up.  Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1.5 hours. Taught by Ms. Ketelsleger. BOARD & COMPUTER GAMES  Students will play different board games that will be both fun and educational. There will be times in which we will play games on the iPad. These games will be educational and/or non-violent games. Students will also spend some time creating their own board game.  Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1.5 hours. Taught by Mr. Sandblom. HIP HOP BREAKDANCING  Students will learn creative body movement strengthen muscles and flexibility while testing they're memories with dance moves that are put into choreography. Space is limited to 20 students. Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1.5 hours. Taught by Master Break-dancer Neal Stiles. CROCHET  From the ABC's of HOW to crochet to making a cool bag from plastic bags, to making a Riverside Vikings hat and many more projects  Offered 1 day per week. Class 1.5 hours. Taught by Mrs. Nelson DRAW MY LIFE (7TH AND 8TH GRADE ONLY)  Remember the important moments of your life in a unique way... draw them! Students will have several opportunities to learn more about themselves through hands-on activities. Draw, videotape, and use voiceover to create a personalized story of their life.  Offered 1 day per week. Class 1.5 hours. Taught by Ms. Rippy EVERYTHING STAR WARS  We will watch the Star Wars movies from beginning to end. At the end of each session we will have a brief discussion of what we watched. Offered 1 day per week. Class 1.5 hours. Taught by Mr. Way. IMPROVISATION MASTERS  Do you love the spotlight? Always wondered what it would be like to be on "Whose Line Is It Anyway"? Learn the art of improvisation that will get you thinking quickly on your feet. Class will feature fun activities and games in which you will learn how to create a scene at a moment’s notice. Offered 1 day per week starting February 24. Class 1.5 hours. Taught by Mr. Bushman. JR. FIREFIGHTER ACADEMY  Students will have the opportunity to learn what firefighter life is about. Major topics include: Fire safety; fire department structure, responsibilities and duties; firefighting techniques including actual use of fire extinguishers; Emergency Medical Service (EMS) activities including hands-only CPR. Class is 1.5 hrs. Offered 1 time per week. Taught by Greg Bak and staff from Colorado River Fire Rescue. SOO BAHK DO MARTIAL ARTS  Traditional Korean Martial Art will teach self-defense through building awareness, confidence, discipline and respect. We will focus on flexibility, balance, body conditioning, and basic history/philosophy of Soo Bahk Do. Limited to 10 students.  Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1.5 hours. Taught by Cynthia Speedy with Rocky Mountain Martial Arts. Class is $30 (includes a uniform). COOKING  Every week kids will prepare tasty recipes to enjoy together. Come learn new cooking skills, or practice your tried and true techniques.  Come join the fun! Offered 1 time per week. Class is 1.5 hours. Taught by Elyssa Nye. Class is $30 and includes ingredients. BUILD A LONGBOARD OR SNOW SKATE  Design and build your own longboard or snow skate that you can take to the streets or slopes! UNYCYCLE CLUB  Want to learn to ride a unicycle? Now you can. Topics such as history, construction, training aids, unicycle types, theory, speed, riding styles, equipment and safety will be covered. WHALEY  ¡Ven y recibe ayuda con tus tareas y asignaciones para que no te retrases en la escuela! Si no tienes tarea entones puedes practicar en mejorar tus habilidades y avanzar en tus estudios.  Esta clase se ofrece en 3 días distintos. Escoge el mejor día para ti. Clase es de 1 hora. Enseñada por Mr. Whaley. MINECRAFT CLUB  Los estudiantes aprenderán a navegar y usar el programa de internet de Minecraft y crear nuevos mundos. No tendremos escenas violentas. ESTUDIANTES DEBEN TENER UNA CUENTA DE MINECRAFT. Máximo de 12 estudiantes.  Se ofrece 1 vez por semana. Clase es de 1 hora. Enseñada por Mr. Davis. COSTURA  Aprende como usar una máquina de coser, diseño de plantillas, selecciones de telas, cortar y preparar las telas. Vamos a producir un diseño simple como unos pantalones para dormir y tendremos un show de modas al final.  Límite de 8 estudiantes. 1 vez por semana. Clase es 1.5 horas. Enseñada por Ms. Ketelsleger. JUEGOS DE TABLERO Y COMPUTADORAS  Cada semana los estudiantes aprenderán a jugar un juego de tablero diferente, el cual será entretenido y educacional. Algunas veces usaremos el iPad para jugar en la computadora, esos juegos serán educacionales y no tendrán violencia.  Clase se ofrece 1 vez por semana. Clase es de 1.5 horas. Enseñada por Mr. Sandblom. HIP HOP BREAKDANCING  Los estudiantes aprenderán a crear movimientos con sus cuerpos y fortalecer sus músculos durante esta clase. También podrán estirar sus extremidades y practicar diferentes rutinas del baile Hip Hop.  Espacio para solo 20 estudiantes. Se ofrece 1 vez por semana. Enseñada por el maestro extraordinario Neal Stiles. GANCHILLO (CROCHET)  Empezando con los básicos de ganchillo. Haremos carteras, gorros de la mascota de la escuela y mucho más.  Clase se ofrece 1 vez por semana. Clase es de 1.5 horas. Enseñada por Mrs. Nelson ILUSTRAR MY VIDA (SOLO PARA ESTUDIANTES DEL 7mo y 8vo GRADO)  Recuerda los momentos importantes de tu vida de forma única... y dibuja los. Clase es de 1.5 horas. Enseñada por Keith Bushman ACADEMIA JR. DE BOMBEROS  Los estudiantes aprenderán los requerimientos para ser un bombero. Tópicos incluyen: Prevención de incendios, cómo funciona un departamento de bomberos, responsabilidades, técnicas para combatir incendios (vamos a usar extinguidores de fuego reales), Servicio de Emergencia Médica (EMS), incluyendo CPR.  Clase es 1 vez por semana, por 1.5 horas. ARTES MARCIALES SOO BAHK DO  Soo Bahk Do es un arte marcial tradicional coreana que promueve el desarrollo personal y enseña técnicas de defensa personal. Clase cuesta $30 (incluye uniforme). Enseñada por Elyssa Nye, instructora de cocina. Clase cuesta $30 e incluye ingredientes. PATINETA DE NIEVE Y LONGBOARD  ¡Diseña y construye una tabla de patineta para la nieve o una patineta larga! Enseñada por Mr. Wild CLUB DE UNICICLO  Aprende a manejar el uniciclo con la habilidad de balancearte. Se requiere usar casco y muñequera. Permiso de Información Escolar: La escuela brindara información confidencial de su estudiante a ACCESS Roaring Fork. Utilizaremos esta información solo para propósitos del programa después de la escuela. Esto ha sido diseñado para ahorrar su tiempo y no llenar formularios duplicados. Yo, el padre / tutor legal del joven antes mencionado, doy mi aprobación para la participación en las actividades patrocinadas por ACCESS.
