Albert Lea Area School Rules for School Bus Passengers The Albert Lea Public School System provides bus transportation for your child to and from school. It is necessary to have certain rules and regulations in order to protect the welfare of every child. Each person, regardless of age, must take the responsibility of following these rules. They should realize that carelessness, thoughtlessness or misconduct can cause injury to themselves or their fellow passengers. Please review the safety rules listed below. 1. Only pupils assigned to the bus by the school board or designated administration officer shall be transported at district expense. In no case shall the number assigned result in more than three passengers per seat. 2. At the bus stop (home or school) students are asked to: A. Be on time. Board the bus only at your assigned pick-up point. B. Stay back from the curb so that you will not accidentally slip or fall into the street or distract passing motorists. C. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and the driver to open the door before proceeding to the bus. Do not push, crowd, or cut the line. Line up in a single row. D. Take a seat promptly, remain seated, and do not move around the bus. E. When it is time to leave the bus, stay seated until the bus has completely stopped. Do not push or crowd to get off. 3. On the bus: The school bus ride is part of the school day. Your driver is on the bus to provide a safe and pleasant trip: A. Please follow the instructions of the driver promptly and courteously. B. For everyone's safety, materials such as: guns, loaded or unloaded; gasoline cans, empty or full; animals or any other object of dangerous or objectionable nature are not allowed in a school bus. C. A student may be charged for damage to the bus. Please respect your bus. D. Remember to keep voices quiet so that your driver can hear traffic noises and be especially quiet at railroad crossings. E. First aid kits, flares and the emergency door are for emergency use only, and should not be handled by students. F. Fighting, abusive language or profanity, throwing objects, use of chemicals or tobacco and general "horseplay" will not be tolerated. G. Windows may be opened only with the permission of the bus driver. Never put your head, arms, feet (or any object) out of the window. H. Spitting, littering, lighting matches and other behavior threatening the safety, well -being and respect for others will not be allowed. 4. When leaving the bus: A. Use the handrail when stepping off the bus. B. When you step off the bus, move away from the bus. C. If you must cross the street, inside or outside the city limits, you should: 1. Walk ten feet ahead of the bus. 2. Stop and look back at the bus driver and wait until the driver gives you the signal to cross. Then look left, right, and left. 3. Walk quickly across the street. Don't stop or turn back. Students who do not obey these safety rules and regulations may be denied transportation as outlined in the following "Discipline Procedures." Any action by a student that threatens the safety of the bus driver and/or passengers or that violates a school regulation will be dealt with according to the following policy. In all cases, the

decision of the bus driver is final and will be reported in writing to the appropriate school administrator. Referral # 1 - The bus driver will make a written report to the principal. the student will be informed of The remainder of the policy and written notice will be sent to the parents. Referral # 2 - The bus driver will make a written report to the principal. The student will be suspended from riding the bus for a period of one (1) to five (5) days. The parents will be contacted informing them of the duration of the suspension. Referral # 3 - The bus driver will make a written report to the principal. The student will be suspended from further bus service for a period of more than five days or until the end of the school year. Furthermore, the School District also reserves the right to suspend students from bus service for the entire period of the student's enrollment. The parents may request a conference with the principal, Director of Transportation, and/or a representative of the bus company to review the reasons for the suspension or propose alternatives to suspension. However, Referrals #1 and # 2 may be waived by the District if the severity of the first violation is such that common sense dictates immediate suspension fo any amount of time up to the balance of the school year for the safety of other students and/or a bus driver. Esperen a que el autobús pare totalmente y el conductor abra la pureta para abordar el autobús, no se empujen, amontonen, o rompan la fila. Formense en una sola hilera. D. Tomen asiento inmediatamente, permanezcan sentados y no se cambien de un lugar a otro en el autobús. E. Cuando llegue el momento de bajar de el autobús, esten sentados hasta que el autobus haga alto total, no se empujen o amontonen al bajar de el autobús. 3. En el autobús. El viaje en el autobús es parte de el día escolar. El conductor de el autobús esta para proporcionaries un viaje agradable y sin peligro: A. A Los Padres de Familia: Todos los alumnos en nuestra escuela que usan los buse s para la ida y vuelta a la escuela tienen que sujetarse las reglas establecidas de la junta educativa. Cualquier comportamiento que distrae al conductor del bus pone en peligro el manejo seguro del conductor y todos los pasajeros. Los alumnos que violan las reglas podran perder su privilegio de usar el bus. En la siguiente poliza la decision final sera del conductor del bus y un reporte escrito sera dado al administrador escolar. Queja # 1 - El conductor del bus dara un reporte escrito al director de l a escuela. Recordara la poliza al alumno y un adviso mandaran a los padres. Queja # 2 - El conductor del bus dara un reporte al director de la escuela. El alumno sera suspendido del bus por un periodo de 1 a 5 dias. Se comunicaran con los padres informandoles del numero de dias que el alumno sera suspendido. Queja # 3 - El conductor del bus dara un reporte al director de la escuela. El alumno sera suspendido del bus por un periodo de mas de 5 dias o hasta el final del ano escolar. El distrito escolar tiene el derecho de suspender a los alumnos del bus por todos los restos de los dias que faltan en el ano escolar. Emergency School Closings District 241 would like to communicate to parents, students, and other district residents what is involved in reaching the decision to cancel school due to the dangerous weather conditions that will soon be with us. The first step in the process is for school district employees to monitor weather conditions through observation, news reports, and weather band radio. When a winter storm is approaching, the district makes direct contact with the regional weather service in Rochester which provides current information and trends for our area. In addition, calls are made to surrounding districts, especially to the west of Albert Lea, in an attempt to track the storm's approach. Calls are also made to the district bus contractor and local law enforcement agencies who monitor road conditions throughout the district. This process of gathering information might continue for several hours depending on the strength, speed, and direction of the storm. The Superintendent gathers and analyzes all weather information, and in consultation with the bus contractor decides whether or not school should be cancelled. As soon as the decision to cancel school is made, that information is immediately communicated to the following radio and television stations: KATE/KCPI (Albert Lea), KROC (Rochester); KAUS, KAAL TV (Austin); KTTC TV (Rochester); and KIMT TV (Mason City). Residents are encouraged to listen to the local Albert Lea stations if possible, because they will have the most current information on weather related cancellations. The school district asks that citizens not telephone the school, school district personnel, or the radio stations for this information. The stations will be informed as soon as a decision is made and that information will be relayed early and often. Calls to district offices will only hinder district employees as they attempt to make school closing preparations. The most important consideration is always the safety and well-being of students and bus drivers. The district wishes to be appropriately cautious but at the same time does not want to cancel school unless it is necessary. Any parents personally concerned about the welfare of their children always have the option to keep them home even if school is held. At times, school may be held when some roads are not open. At those times busses will operate on plowed roads only. If a hazardous condition exists at morning pickup time in a given area, parents are requested to keep students home or to personally deliver them to school or bus stop. If school is dismissed early, some students may return home to empty houses. Parents are encouraged to monitor local radio stations as winter storms approach and have arranged a n alternative place for their children to go if no one is home and school is dismissed early. It takes approximately two hours to contact drivers and make transportation arrangements once it is decided to dismiss early. Local radio stations will announce t hose dismissal times. Finally, all students should be dressed appropriately for inclement winter weather. Severe winter storms are often followed by very cold, windy weather which can also be dangerous without proper clothing. With cooperation and understanding between school and community, school closings and early dismissals can be accomplished in a satisfactory manner for all concerned.
