School supplies needed for the “Backpack On Saturday, August 6th

Project”

The Humanities Ministry is currently collecting school supply donations to help children at St. Ann’s Mission, St. Monica, St. Michael Archangel, St. Juan Boco, etc. Due to the current economic trends they find themselves unable to provide for the needs of the children. If you would like to help, here are some suggestions: Pencil sharpeners, Erasers, Folders, Three ring binder, Pocket dividers, Rulers, Highlighters, Color Pencils, Scissors (safety blunt), Lined paper to refill notebooks, erasable pens, Pencil Pouch, Composition Journals, Glue Sticks, Glue. Boxes will be placed outside the Church in the vestibule area for the collection of all supplies. We will be accepting donations until August 3, 2016.

St. Louis, una comunidad generosa, que siempre ha respondido al llamado de ayuda al prójimo en situaciones difíciles, les pedimos su colaboración para aliviar la crisis humanitaria que está atravesando Venezuela por la falta de alimentos, medicamentos e insumos variados. Estamos recolectando durante varias semanas lo siguiente: Alimentos no perecederos como: leche en polvo y fórmula para bebés, arroz, granos de todo tipo (frijoles, lentejas, garbanzos, etc.), enlatados de carne, pollo y pescado (atún, sardinas), vegetales y sopas enlatadas, pasta, cereales, azúcar, aceite, harina de maíz, galletas dulces o de soda, barras de proteínas. Medicinas sin receta: tylenol, ibuprofen, antialérgicos, antidiarreicos, alcohol, agua oxigenada, algodón curitas, crema para pañalitis, Neosporin, y en general artículos de primeros auxilios. Medicinas con receta, no expiradas. Toallas sanitarias y pañales para bebés y adultos. Artículos de aseo personal: jabón, champú, desodorante, afeitadoras, pasta dental, cepillos de dientes, crema para el cuerpo, etc. Artículos de limpieza: desinfectantes, cloro, esponjas, jabón para lavar la ropa, etc. Pueden colocar los artículos en las cajas junto al santuario. Lecturas Del Dia PRIMERA LECTURA (Génesis 18: 20-32) Abraham tiene experiencia de quién y cómo es Dios. Su fe en El le llevar a interceder ante el Señor por dos ciudades. El dialogo entre Abraham y Dios es un dialogo de amistad y a la vez de confianza. Recorrer la vida desde la relación con Dios provoca en el hombre la toma de conciencia de los problemas y necesidades del prójimo. Esto conduce, a la vez, a no permanecer indiferente ante las dificultades de los demás, sino a estar dispuestos a actuar desde la clave que es creer en Dios, que es fiel y misericorioso. SEGUNDA LECTURA (Colosense 2: 12-14) San Pablo nos recuerda que por medio de Bautismo y la fe en Cristo muerto y resucitado participamos de su misma vida. Nuestra existencia queda unida a la suya. Estamos llamados a comunicar por medio de nuestro Testimonio de vida la nueva relación con Dios Padre y con nuestro prójimo que ha surgido al ser bautizados en la fe en Jesús el Señor. EVANGELIO (Lucas11: 1-13 Los discípulos le piden a Jesús que les enseñe a orar. Jesús les muestra la oración como dialogo confiado con Dios Padre. Entre las actitudes que deben acompañar nuestra oración, Jesucristo subraya la perseverancia y también la confianza en Dios Padre. La forma de tratar a Dios en la oración tiene consecuencias importantes a la hora de vivir cada día, y sobre todo en cuanto a cómo tratar a los demás. Orar a Dios como Padre Nuestro nos lleva a vivir como hijos suyos, y como hermanos de nuestro prójimo.

¿Regateando con Dios?

Have you seen the variety of “prayer chains”? Some of them travel the Internet. They make promises like: if you say such and such a prayer for so many times a day and send it off to others, God will give you what you ask. Some of these prayer chains are associated with St. Jude. Sometimes they threaten a curse for someone who fails to keep the chain going. I am sure well meaning persons may pass along these prayer chains, but these “tactics” to get God to do something do not really sound Christian. Jesus told us to pray: “Thy will be done,” not “My will be done.” There is no magical way to control God. Even today’s scriptures do not mean that anything we seek from God we have a guarantee that we will receive it as we ask. Jesus teaches us to pray with confidence to God (Luke 11:9-10): “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Notice that there are no objects for the verbs. He does not say to ask for money and expect to receive it. He does not say to knock on the door of a prospective employer and the door of opportunity will automatically happen. The only thing Jesus guarantees is the gift of the Spirit in verse 13: “If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?” God never abandons his people. He empowers us to face difficult challenges through the presence of his risen Son and the gift of the Spirit. Jesus teaches us to trust the Father as he did. Abraham in the first reading is like us asking questions about life; not bargaining with God, he does not ask for anything. He asks questions about everything: good and evil, life and death– yet trusting ultimate justice, the purpose and plan of God in the universe. Abraham, wrestling with God about life, is Abraham at prayer. Jesus similarly wrestles with God as he comes to the end of his earthly life. We see that Jesus did not always get what he asked for in prayer. Remember the story of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane the night he was arrested: “After withdrawing about a stone’s throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done’ ” (Luke 22:41-42). Jesus asked for something, that the cup of suffering be taken away, and the Father said “no” to him. Yet Jesus still trusted his Father as he said, “Not my will but yours be done.” Prayer means trusting God, not trying to convince God to see things our way. Prayer does not so much change God but changes us.

¿Han visto ustedes la gran variedad de “cadenas de oración” que hay? Algunas de ellas están en el ‘internet’. Hacen promesas: si usted dice esto y hace esta oración, tantas veces al día y la envía a otros, Dios le concederá todo lo que pide. Algunas de estas cadenas de oración están asociadas con San Judas. Algunas veces hay veladas amenazas de maldiciones para aquel que rompa la cadena. Estoy seguro que personas bien intencionadas le dan continuidad a la cadena de oración, pero las “tácticas” para hacer que Dios haga algo no son muy Cristianas que digamos. Jesús nos dijo que oráramos: “Hágase tu voluntad” y no “Hágase mi voluntad.” No hay una forma mágica para controlar a Dios. Aun en las Escrituras de hoy no hay nada que diga que lo que pedimos a Dios está garantizado de que recibiremos como lo hemos pedido. Jesús nos enseñó a orar con confianza en Dios (Lucas 11: 9-10): “Y yo les digo: Pidan y se les dará, busquen y encontrarán, llamen y se les abrirá, porque quien pide recibe, quien busca encontrará, a quien llame se le abre.” Noten que no hay razones específicas. El no dice que hay que pedir dinero y esperar recibirlo. El no dice que toquen a la puerta de un prospecto empleador y la puerta de oportunidades automáticamente sucederá. Lo único que Jesús garantiza es el don del Espíritu en el versículo 13: “Pues si ustedes, que son malos, saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más el Padre del cielo dará el Espíritu Santo a los que se lo pidan! Dios nunca abandona a su gente. El nos da las fuerzas necesarias para confrontar las dificultades a través de la presencia de Su Hijo resucitado y el don del Espíritu Santo. Jesús nos enseña a confiar en el Padre como lo hizo él. Abraham en la primera lectura es como nosotros haciendo preguntas sobre la vida; no regateándo con Dios, él no pide nada. El hace preguntas sobre todas las cosas: buenas y malas, la vida y la muerte - aun así confiando en la justicia final, el propósito y el plan de Dios en el universo. Abraham, lucha con Dios por la vida, Abraham está orando. Jesús similarmente lucha con Dios cuando llega al final de su vida terrenal. Vemos que Jesús no siempre logra lo que piden en oración. Recuerdan la historia de Jesús orando en el Monte de los Olivos la noche antes de ser arrestado: “Se apartó de ellos como a la distancia de un tiro de piedra, se arrdilló y oraba: ‘Padre, si quieres, aparta de mí esta copa, pero no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya’”(Lucas 22: 41-42). Jesús pidió algo, que la copa de su sufrimiento fuera apartada de él, y el Padre le dijo “no” a él. Aun así Jesús siguió confiando en su Padre como dijo, “No se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya.” La oración significa confianza en Dios, no tratar de convencerlo para que vea las cosas a mi manera. La oración no cambia a Dios sino a nosotros.
