NUMBER 2 ENGINE STARTER OIL QUANTITY CHECK AND SERVICING (AiResearch and Parker Hannifin) NOTE: The following task one (1) is applicable only to AiResearch starters. Task two (2) is applicable only to Parker Hannifin starters. 1.
Perform oil quantity check of AiResearch starter (P/N 383534-1-2 or 383534-2-1):
WARNING: AVOID SKIN CONTACT WITH THE OIL. IT WILL PRODUCE PARALYSIS IF ALLOWED TO REMAIN ON THE SKIN FOR PROLONGED PERIODS. IF SPILLAGE ON THE SKIN OCCURS, WASH THE AFFECTED AREA WITH SOAP AND HOT WATER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. NOTE: • MIL-L-7808, MIL-L-23699, Mobile Jet (II) or equivalent oil may be used, however, these oils shall not be mixed during servicing procedure. Whenever it is desired to substitute approved oils it will be necessary to accomplish the drain and flush steps in the following NOTE. • If starter oil change is required, drain and refill with 375 cubic centimeters of oil, motor starter for no longer than 1 minute, Completely drain and service. Pour 14 fluid ounces (425 cubic centimeters) of oil through the fill port with drain plug removed to ensure removal of any sediment released during flushing procedure. Replace and lockwire drain plug and fill starter 14 fluid ounces (425 cubic centimeters) of oil. The specified quantity must be measured. A. B. C.
Unscrew, remove dipstick and wipe clean. Insert dipstick in starter until it bottoms. Do not screw in. Remove dipstick and check oil level.
NOTE: When cold, the oil level should be approximately one-third below the “FULL” mark toward the ADD mark. When hot, (within 30 minutes after engine run), the oil level should be at the “FULL” mark. D.

Check the starter drain plug for security and starter installation for evidence of leakage. Remove lockwire and then remove oil fill port plug. Check that oil is full to the top of the fill port. If servicing is required, fill to the top of the fill port.
NOTE: • MIL-L-7808, MIL-L-23699, Mobil Jet (II) or equivalent oil may be used, however, these oils shall not be mixed during servicing procedure. Whenever it is desired to substitute approved oil it will be necessary to accomplish the drain and flush steps in the following NOTE. • If starter oil change is required, drain and refill with 150 cubic centimeters of oil, motor starter for no longer than 1 minute, completely drain and service. Pour 5.76 fluid ounces (175 cubic centimeters) of oil through the fill port with drain plug removed to ensure removal of any sediment released during flushing procedure. Replace and lockwire drain plug and fill starter with 5.76 fluid ounces (175 cubic centimeters) of oil. The specified quantity must be measured. Oil will be full to top of fill port. D.
Replace the fill port plug and tighten to a torque value of 150 to 160 inch-pounds. Lockwire the oil fill port plug.
