NUMBER 4 ENGINE STARTER OIL CHANGE (AiResearch and Parker Hannifin) WARNING: AVOID SKIN CONTACT WITH THE OIL. IT WILL PRODUCE PARALYSIS IF ALLOWED TO REMAIN ON THE SKIN FOR PROLONGED PERIODS. IF SPILLAGE ON THE SKIN OCCURS, WASH THE AFFECTED AREA WITH SOAP AND HOT WATER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. NOTE: • To facilitate draining starter oil, fabricate an improvised drain trough. • The following task one (1) is applicable only to AiResearch starters. Task two (2) is applicable only to Parker Hannifin starters. 1.
Perform oil change of AiResearch starter (P/N 383534-1-2 or 383534-2-1) as follows: A. B.
Remove oil fill port plug, oil drain plug, and thoroughly drain oil from starter into a suitable container. Pour approximately ½ pint of oil through starter and allow the oil to drain thoroughly. (Refer to card SP-244 for listing of approved oils.) Install oil drain plug, tighten and safety wire. Service starter with approved oil as follows:

Service starter with 425 ± 5cc (approximately 14 fluid ounces) of oil. Unscrew dipstick, remove and wipe clean. Insert dipstick until it bottoms; do not screw in.
Do not overfill: Damage to starter may occur from over servicing. (4) (5) (6)
Remove dipstick, check oil level, and service as necessary to “FULL” mark. Install dipstick and lock. Install oil fill port plug, tighten and safety wire.

NOTE: The following task two (2) is applicable only to Parker Hannifin starters. 2.
Perform oil change of Parker Hannifin starter (P/N 36E165-2 Series) as follows: A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H.
Remove oil fill port plug, oil drain plug, and allow oil to drain into a suitable container. Install oil drain plug and service starter with 150 cubic centimeters of oil. (Refer to card SP-244 for listing of approved oils.) Install oil fill port plug and motor the starter for 30 seconds. Remove oil fill port plug, oil drain plug, and completely drain oil. Pour 5.76 fluid ounces (175 cubic centimeters) of oil through oil fill port with oil drain plug removed to ensure removal of any sediment released during flushing procedure. Install oil drain plug, tighten, and safety wire. Service starter with 5.76 fluid ounces (175 cubic centimeters) of oil. The oil will be full to the top of oil fill port. Install oil fill port plug and tighten to a torque value of 150 to 160 inch-pounds. Lockwire oil fill port plug.
