Breakfast in the Classroom Boston K-8 participates in the program Breakfast in the Classroom. Breakfast in the Classroom will continue to occur on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays as usual beginning at 8:00am. To support our Boston K-8 students with our late start Wednesday, we are going to open the cafeteria for breakfast on late start Wednesday from 9:00am- 9:20am. Please note that students can enter the cafeteria via the side doors on the large playground at 9:00am to sit down and eat breakfast. After breakfast the students will be dismissed to the playgrounds where they will line up and wait for their classroom teacher. Students arriving at 9:20am or after will not be served breakfast as the cafeteria will be closed in order to set up for lunch and breakfast will not be served in the classroom on Wednesdays due to the shorter day. Boston K-8 students can show their spirit during our fun and crazy spirit week November 10th- November 14th. During these days please make sure your child dresses appropriately for school and that it matches the spirit day’s theme. Students that decide not to participate need to follow the dress code.

As we begin the second quarter, 2nd grade went on a wonderful field trip to the Denver Botanic Gardens. Students had a great opportunity to observe plants and flowers in their natural habitat and also see the modern art of Dale Chihuly. They learned about the lifecycle of a plant, sorted and tasted herbs and completed a scavenger hunt in the gardens to identify different types of plants and flowers. Students made many connections to what we are learning in the classroom, especially science and art. We had a great time and look forward to expanding our minds in 2nd grade.

Boston K-8 Parent Tea Meeting Join us for our first Parent Tea Meeting on Wednesday, November 12th from 3:00-4:00pm, in the Community Learning Center (Boston K-8- 2nd Floor). We will share information about our school, our 3 school goals, Boston website, and great resources that can help your child!  

Art News- Ms. Nolasco I’m happy to announce that our very own Tee Reh in 7th grade has been selected as a finalist in RTD’s bus contest. Teachers, families and students got the opportunity to vote on line Oct. 17-24 and a flyer was sent home with full details to vote. We all congratulate Tee Reh for his amazing art work. He spent several hours developing his art piece and we hope he wins the RTD contest “I Heart My RTD”. The winners will work directly with RTD’s creative team to transform their art into a bus design. A celebratory event will be held with the schools where the wrapped bus will be unveiled. All entries will be featured inside RTD’s buses, so keep an eye out for some great art on your favorite route. We wish Tee Reh the best and hope he wins! We also thank all the teachers, students, and families that voted for him!

6th Grade- Mrs. Mehling Remember that your child should be reading at least 20 minutes each night. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they should be reading 30 to 45 minutes a night. This is their literacy homework. Research shows that students who read 20 minutes a day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Please make sure that your child is achieving this reading requirement each night.

Have fun reading with your children even if you do not know English!

K-5 Learning Standards in Colorado Colorado Department of Education in partnership with Colorado PTA have created the Colorado Academic Standards for grades K-5 (in English and Spanish) to help guide families and community in better understanding the purpose of standards. An overview of the learning expectations for each of the ten content areas of the standards is provided. They also provide examples of educational experiences that students may engage in and that families could support, during the school year. Know what your child learns at school and reinforce their learning at home. Every day is a learning opportunity! Playworks at Boston K-8 Coach Johnny is pleased to announce that Playworks is well under way here at Boston K-8 and students seem to be responding very positively. Coach Johnny ensures that all Boston students have the opportunity to play in a safe, healthy and inclusive environment. At recess, we have marked off clear area for different games such as soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, tetherball, four square and jump ropes. He has started Class Game Time which is when he teaches individual classes the rules to different games and then we get to play those games. Soon, both the Junior Coach Leadership Program and our Interscholastic Leagues will begin. Look for updates on those programs in the next newsletter!

English Classes Boston K-8 is please to offer free English classes to our adult community members. We are offering beginner level with Mrs. Aguilar and the intermediate level with Mr. Lanier. At this time we have 20 adults taking advantage of this great opportunity. We have free child care during this time. If you would like to join us and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity please contact Mrs. Aguilar or Mr. Lanier at 303-364-6878. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5pm and run until February 12, 2015. This will be the only month that we can register additional adult English Language Learners.

Family Fall Cultural Festival Boston K-8 will host a Family Fall Cultural Festival November 21st from 4:30-5:30. You are invited to an evening full of fun and cultural learning. Dress up in your favorite cultural attire and participate in our cultural walk for a chance to win a prize. Visit informational tables and learn about other cultures from our Boston community. Come look at our student artwork on display and listen to our Boston K-8 students sing some great cultural songs. Enjoy dance presentations representing various cultures. At Boston K-8 we have a variety of cultures. With more than 13 spoken languages at Boston K-8, each and every one of our students is special and we would love to be able to represent the majority of them during our cultural night. 6th – 8th Boys Lock-In The 6th -8th grade boys Lock-In was on October 10th from 5 pm to 7 am October 11th. We invited all 6th - 8th grade boys. They boys had a great time interacting with each other and doing some team building activities. A big thank you to all Boston K-8 staff that donated money, snacks, and time for this fantastic night!

Your Health Matters: Health News and Tips Protect Yourself from the Flu!

What to Know About Ebola

What is the flu? The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu season occurs between October and March.

What is Ebola? Ebola is a severe viral infection that can cause organ failure and death in humans. The current outbreak of Ebola is centered in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. More recently, several cases of Ebola infections have emerged in Dallas, Texas and New York City, New York.

How does it spread? The influenza viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. A person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes, or nose. What are the signs and symptoms of the flu? Fever (though not everyone with the flu may have a fever), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (very tired), and vomiting or diarrhea. How do I protect myself from the flu? • Get the flu vaccine! Walgreens’ accepts most major health insurances and also provides the vaccine for free for people who are uninsured. • Avoid close contact with sick people. • Wash your hands often. • Cover your coughs and sneezes. • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. • Clean and disinfect surfaces. • Stay home when you’re sick.

How does Ebola Spread? • Ebola does not spread through air or by water. • Ebola is spread through direct contact with blood or body fluids (such as urine, saliva, feces, vomit, sweat, breast milk, and semen) of a person sick with Ebola. Direct contact means having infected blood or body fluid come into contact with broken skin or the eyes, or mouth. Who is at risk for getting Ebola? • Family and friends in close contact with Ebola patients and healthcare workers caring for Ebola patients. • Travelers visiting or returning from areas in Africa where an Ebola outbreak has occurred, if they had direct contact with a person who is sick with Ebola. What are the symptoms of Ebola? Fever, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, severe headache, stomach pain, unexplained bleeding or bruising. What should a person do if they think they have Ebola? People who may have been exposed to Ebola and do not feel well should immediately go to the hospital. They should tell medical staff right away that they think they have been exposed to Ebola. Should I be worried about Ebola here in Colorado and at Boston K-8? No. There are no cases here in Colorado, and we should be much more concerned about the flu.

Meet Boston K-8’s New School Nurse! My name is Stephanie Wong, and I am so happy and excited to be Boston K-8’s school nurse. I am here full-time and will be here throughout the school year. If your student feels sick, hurts anywhere, or has a chronic health condition like asthma, I am here to take care of them. Shaping the Future: A New Strategic Plan for APS The APS Leadership Team and Board of Education have spent the past 18 months laying the groundwork for a new strategic plan for Aurora Public Schools. Since 2006, APS has operated under the VISTA strategic framework, which will conclude in January 2015.

Strategic Planning Team To ensure that our new plan, APS 2020: Shaping the Future, reflects the goals and values of the APS community, we’ve brought together a Strategic Planning Team to gather internal and external stakeholder feedback to develop the plan. The team consists of APS staff, Board members, parents and community and business members.

Opportunity for Feedback To learn more about the strategic plan development process and provide feedback, please visit aps2020.aurorak12.org. Strategic Planning Team members will incorporate this feedback as they draft the plan. In January 2015, the Board will consider adopting the plan, which would lead to a full launch and implementation of APS 2020: Shaping the Future.

Town Center at Aurora Offers APS Computer Kiosks APS parents can access computer kiosks at the Town Center at Aurora shopping mall to view their children’s Parent Portal accounts, find information on the APS website, or browse mall shopping opportunities. The APS Parent Portal is part of the Infinite Campus student information system. The portal is a secure, confidential website that allows parents to view current information about their child’s attendance, grades, class assignments and other resources. To access the Parent Portal, parents must request a Parent Portal ID from their child’s school and then follow the online instructions to set up the account. The computer kiosks are located on the first level of the mall near Guest Services and on the second level near Radio Shack. The kiosks are a joint venture between Aurora Public Schools and the Town Center at Aurora and are provided as a free service to APS parents and students.

Are You Ready to Become a Boston K-8 volunteer? Boston K-8 welcomes volunteers during the school day, at home, and/or during school events. The Security department registers all volunteers and provides them with ID badges to ensure the safety of our students. A background check is performed on each volunteer. If the volunteer is committing to only a onetime event, he or she will simply need to register at the front office of the school. **Note: You do not have to be a US citizen or resident to be a school volunteer. ** To register as a volunteer: 1. Complete and return a Volunteer Registration Form at Boston K-8. Forms are available in English and Spanish. 2. Skate City We had a fabulous time at Skate City on October 3. We had 66 skaters that had a blast skating and dancing with their glow sticks. Three families joined us and had a great time skating with their children. Boston K-8 invites students and their families to join us at our Skate City events during the school year. Our future Skate City dates this school year are December 5, February 20, and April 30. The skating party runs from 4-6pm. We will have two buses picking up students that have an RSVP from Boston K-8 at 3:15 and returning them at the end of our skating event. Skate City Aurora is the place to come for roller skating fun! You can get your feet moving and your heart pumping to great tunes. Come have some fun and get some exercise done! Information will be sent home with students prior to the event. Help Boston Collect Box Tops All Year! This year Boston K-8 will be collecting Box Top coupons to raise money for our school. Boston will earn 10 cents for every box top coupon you send in.

Book It! At Boston K-8 October 1-March 31 The Challenge is on for Boston K-8 Students in grades K-6th grade. Please have your child read so they can become better readers. For the next 6 months Boston students will have the opportunity to earn Reading Award Certificates by meeting reading goals that are set by your child’s teacher. Students can redeem their certificate at Pizza Hut and celebrate their accomplishment with a free one-topping personal pan pizza. Only students that meet their goal will have the opportunity to receive these awards each month.

Box Top coupons are on the packaging of hundreds of participating products that you probably use every day. All you need to do is cut them off of the box they are on, stick them in a baggie, and send them to school with your child. When you’re making holiday meals, ask your youngster to help you. You’ll spend time together, and he’ll feel proud of his contributions (tearing lettuce for a salad, peeling potatoes to mash). Bonus: Following recipes, measuring ingredients, and seeing chemistry in action build skills that will help your child succeed in school.

Let’s cook together

Your child isn’t too young to learn about simple computer programming. In fact, coding games, apps, and classes can help her develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills—and she may discover her future career! Enforcing rules consistently is a key to success. If you allow snacks in the living room “just this once,” your child may ignore the food rule in the future. Also, let him know what the consequences are for breaking rules. Be sure to relate the consequence to the rule so he understands the connection (example: writing a note of apology after speaking unkindly).♥

Involve your child

Try this: Sit down together with poster board, pencils, and crayons, and talk about what’s important in your house (for instance, treating each other nicely or cleaning up after yourselves). Have your youngster write each rule in his own words and illustrate it. Encourage him to write rules that sound positive (“Knock before entering a room”) rather

2. Scented play dough Use different flavors of powdered drink mix to whip up clay that smells yummy. In a saucepan, your child should combine 1 packet drink mix plus 1 cup flour, 1 cup water, –21 cup salt, 1 tbsp. vegetable oil, and 2 tsp. cream of tartar. Stir it over low heat until it’s the consistency of play dough. When it cools, he’ll be able to mold the dough into sculptures.♥

1. Puffy paints Your youngster can use customcolored paints to create 3-D art. For each color, he should mix –41 cup shaving cream and 1 – 4 cup glue. Have him add food coloring until he gets the exact shade he wants and stir until stiff peaks form. Then, give him a paintbrush and construction paper to create his masterpieces.

You’ll want to find out how your son is doing academically as well as socially, so you might ask questions like “Does he usually finish assignments on time?” or “Does he get along with the other kids?” You could also ask what you can do at home to help him. Another idea is to find out what your child would like you to bring up during grade or the conference. Home&School Personalizadas, positivas y coherentes: éstas son las características de las normas que los niños suelen obedecer. Tenga en cuenta estas sugerencias para crear normas lógicas para su familia. Decidir lo que importa Explíquele a su hijo que las normas de ustedes quizá no sean idénticas a las de sus amigos. Por ejemplo, algunas familias comen sólo en la cocina, mientras que otras permiten que se lleven los alimentos a otras partes de la casa. Es más fácil que los niños recuerden unas cuantas sencillas normas en lugar de una larga lista, así que elija las que realmente les resulten indispensables. Playworks en Boston K-8 El Entrenador Johnny está orgulloso de anunciar que Playworks está establecido en Boston K-8 y los estudiantes parecen estar respondiendo positivamente. Festival Cultural Familiar del Otoño Boston K-8 será el anfitrión de nuestro Festival Cultural Familiar del otoño el 21 de noviembre de 4:30-5:30. Usted está invitado a una tarde llena de diversión y aprendizaje cultural. Vístase de acuerdo con su cultura preferida y participe en nuestro desfile cultural para tener la oportunidad de ganarse un premio. Visite las mesas informativas y aprenda acerca de otras culturas de nuestra comunidad de Boston. Vengan a ver el arte de nuestros estudiantes que estará en exposición y escuche a nuestros estudiantes de Boston K-8 cantar canciones culturales. Disfrute de presentaciones representando varias culturas. En Boston K-8 tenemos una gran variedad de culturas. Con más de 13 lenguajes hablados en Boston K-8, cada uno de nuestros estudiantes es especial y nos encantaría poder representar a la mayoría de ellos durante nuestra noche cultural. ¡No se pierda este gran evento! Segundo Grado

Los estudiantes de Boston K-8 pueden demostrar su espíritu escolar durante nuestra semana de diversión del espíritu estudiantil del 10 de noviembre al 14 de noviembre. Durante estos días por favor asegúrese que su hijo/a se viste apropiadamente para la escuela y que concuerda con el tema del día. Los estudiantes que decidan no participar necesitan seguir el código de vestimento.

Mientras comenzamos el segundo trimestre escolar, el segundo grado fue a un paseo escolar maravilloso a los jardines Botánicos de Denver (Denver Botanic Garden). Los estudiantes tuvieron la gran oportunidad de observar plantas y flores en su hábito natural y ver el arte moderno de Dale Chihuly. Ellos aprendieron acerca del ciclo de vida de una planta, separaron y probaron hierbas y completaron una búsqueda en los jardines para identificar diferentes tipos de plantas y flores. Los estudiantes hicieron muchas conexiones a lo que están aprendiendo en clase, especialmente ciencias y arte. ¡No la pasamos muy bien y esperamos ansiosamente explorar nuestras mentes en segundo grado!

Junta de Padres en Boston Reunámonos para nuestra primera junta de padres (Té de Padres) el miércoles, 12 de noviembre de 3:00-4:00pm, en el cuarto Community Learning Center (Boston K-82o piso). ¡Compartiremos información acerca de nuestra escuela, nuestras tres metas escolares, la página virtual de Boston, y buenos recursos que le pueden ayudar a su hijo/a!  

Noticias de Arte- Ms. Nolasco Estoy feliz de anunciar que nuestro estudiante de séptimo grado Tee Reh ha sido seleccionado como finalista para el concurso de autobuses RTD. Maestros, familias, y estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de votar en línea del 17-24 de octubre y se mando un boletín a casa con todos los detalles para votar. Todos le damos felicitaciones a Tee Reh por su gran trabajo. El se tomo varias horas haciendo su obra de arte y esperamos que el gane el concurso “I Heart My RTD”. Los ganadores trabajaran directamente con el equipo creativo de RTD para transferir su arte en un diseño de autobús. Habrá un evento de celebración con las escuelas donde se revelara el autobús. El arte de todos los participantes estará en exposición dentro de los autobuses de RTD, busquen el gran arte en su ruta favorita. ¡Le deseamos a Tee Reh lo mejor y esperamos que gane! ¡También les damos las gracias a los maestros, estudiantes, y familias que votaron por él!

Noticias del 6º Grado- Sra. Mehling Recuerden que su hijo/a debe estar leyendo por lo menos 20 minutos cada noche. Los martes y jueves, ellos deben de leer de 30 a 45 minutos. Esta es su tarea de literatura. Investigaciones demuestran que los estudiantes que leen 20 minutos al día obtienen calificaciones en el porcentaje de 90% en examines estatales. Por favor asegúrese que su hijo/a cumpla con el requerimiento de lectura cada noche.

Desayuno en el Salón de Clases Boston K-8 participa en el programa de desayuno en el salón de clases. El desayuno en el salón de clases continuara ocurriendo el lunes, martes, jueves y viernes empezando a las 8:00am. Para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes de Boston K-8 con la entrada tarde los miércoles, vamos a abrir nuestra cafetería para desayunar los miércoles cuando entran tarde los estudiantes de 9:00am- 9:20am. Por favor sepa que los estudiantes pueden entrar por las puertas de la cafetería usando las puertas localizadas en el patio grande a las 9:00am para poder tomar asiento y desayunar. Después del desayuno los estudiantes podrán salir al patio grande donde harán fila y esperaran a su maestro/a. Los estudiantes que lleguen a las 9:20am o después no se les dará el desayuno por la razón de que la cafetería estará cerrada para prepararse para el almuerzo y el desayuno no se servirá en el salón de clases los miércoles por el día corto.
