Increased Border Patrols Slow Crossings New or Times reports that a two-month old, $25 million program that increased border patrolling, has cut attempts of undocumented immigrants coming across a section of the international boundary south of Imperial Beach, CA. Im migration officials warn, however, that while "Operation Gatekeeper" is considered successful, other less-guarded sections of the border are beginning to experience increases in crossing attempts. Attorney General Janet Reno has welcomed the report of the results and she promised that more help and equipment would be sent. "Operation Gatekeeper" began after officials in several border states, including California Governor Pete Wilson complained that rising numbers of undocumented immigrants were "driving up welfare costs and leaving taxpayers increasingly frustrated and ready to vent their anger politically", said the Times.
