These word cards — each focusing on a different place — are designed for you and your child to use in everyday settings and situations, building on your child’s natural curiosity. Use them inside, outside — anywhere you go. Make learning new words an adventure!

Keep them on hand throughout the day. Wherever you find yourselves — in the kitchen, in the park, or in a garden, for instance — use the matching card to talk together about what you’re seeing and doing. Take turns filling in the story blanks; do the activities. This will help give the new words context and reinforce their meanings.

Family Activities Use the cards to spark conversations. One word naturally leads to others! For instance, if you’re looking at the “In the Park” card, talk about what other things you see in the park, or ask your child about his favorite thing to do in the park. Ask questions that help your child develop conversation skills. A question that can be answered simply “yes” or “no” may end your discussion. Instead, ask questions that lead to more back-and-forth talking, such as “What’s your favorite thing to do on snowy days?”

Explore math and science concepts as you enjoy the cards together. You could say, “Grover’s binoculars have two lenses. Let’s think of other things that come in pairs.” Or ask, “What do you think a crop needs in order to grow?” Put the words into action! Pick a different vocabulary word from the cards every few days. Use it in context, and encourage your child to use it, too.

Family Activities Use the cards to spark conversations. One word naturally leads to others! For instance, if you’re looking at the “In the Park” card, talk about what other things you see in the park, or ask your child about his favorite thing to do in the park. Ask questions that help your child develop conversation skills. A question that can be answered simply “yes” or “no” may end your discussion. Instead, ask questions that lead to more back-and-forth talking, such as “What’s your favorite thing to do on snowy days?”

Explore math and science concepts as you enjoy the cards together. You could say, “Grover’s binoculars have two lenses. Let’s think of other things that come in pairs.” Or ask, “What do you think a crop needs in order to grow?” Put the words into action! Pick a different vocabulary word from the cards every few days. Use it in context, and encourage your child to use it, too.

Keep them on hand throughout the day. Take turns filling in the story blanks; do the activities. This will help give the new words context and reinforce their meanings.
