TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Isaiah speaks of the servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7). Psalm — The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29). Second Reading — Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38). Gospel — A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Matthew 3:13-17). THIS IS MY BELOVED SON This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

FEAST OF FAITH The Sign of the Cross At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith.

SPIRIT OF LOVE Holy Spirit, who came upon Christ Jesus when he was baptized in the waters of the Jordan, we pray to you: Baptize us in the fire of your love so that the Father may say to each of us: “You are my beloved Son, On whom my favor rests.”

ESTE ES MI HIJO MUY AMADO Con la celebración del Bautismo del Señor este domingo concluye el tiempo de Navidad. En las lecturas vemos más de una epifanía o manifestación del Espíritu de Dios en Jesús, sólo que esta vez ya no como niño, sino como adulto. El Bautismo de Jesús es también la inauguración de su misión profética y de la era mesiánica. En la lectura de hoy Isaías describe al Mesías elegido por Dios sobre el cual ha puesto su Espíritu. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles Pedro dice que “Dios ungió con el poder del Espíritu Santo a Jesús de Nazaret” (Hechos 10:38). Finalmente, en las proclamación del Evangelio de Mateo el Bautismo de Jesús en el agua casi pasa desapercibido. El momento crucial ocurre cuando el Espíritu de Dios desciende sobre Jesús y una voz del cielo viene como un eco de las palabras de Isaías: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo mis complacencias” (Mateo 3:17).

FIESTA DE LA FE Convocados por Dios San Ignacio de Loyola enfatizaba mucho la necesidad de encontrar a Dios en todo, no porque Dios estuviera perdido o ausente, sino porque las personas no siempre son conscientes de su presencia en ellas o entre ellas. En la asamblea litúrgica es Dios quien nos convoca a celebrar con él, con Cristo y por medio de Cristo, la nueva alianza, la Pascua misma. Los textos posteriores a la resurrección así lo manifiestan, la preferencia del Señor por revelarse a la Iglesia en asamblea. Curiosamente, somos convocados por Dios y él se hace presente; nosotros somos participantes en este encuentro, más no protagonistas, porque el protagonista es Cristo mismo. No es una reunión cualquiera o reunión con fines meramente sociales, sino la reunión de los hombres y las mujeres libres que se reúnen a celebrar la presencia de Cristo y responden al llamado de Dios. No somos nosotros los que convocamos ‘una reunión con Dios’, sino Dios quien convoca un encuentro-celebración con nosotros. Por ello, no venimos como individuos aislados, sino como miembros de un solo cuerpo; no comulgamos para vivir la comunión, sino que comulgamos porque vivimos la comunión en medio de nuestra gran diversidad. Somos asamblea convocada, cuerpo vivo y santo que se hará sacrificio de alabanza.

BAUTISMO Espíritu Santo, que viniste sobre Cristo Jesús cuando fue bautizado en aguas del Jordán; te rogamos: Bautízanos con el fuego de tu amor para que el Padre nos diga a cada uno: “Tú eres mi hijo amado; mi predilecto”.

Who’s in? Who’s out?

¿Quiénes están adentro y quiénes afuera?

The book of Leviticus in the Old Testament contains a long list of rules for Jewish people to become “pure” and to maintain that purity. This purity has nothing to do with simple cleanliness. The rituals to ensure purity guaranteed a worthiness to be in contact with sacred things. The code for the priests who officiated in the temple ceremonies required the highest degree of purity. The Pharisees would only eat with others who were keeping those strict laws of purity. Social exclusion was the Jewish norm. The elite mixed only with the elite and the pure with the pure. Some Jews, the Essenes, took themselves off to a desert settlement to be even more pure and exclusive. So, along comes John the Baptist. He walks around in animal skins, eats grasshoppers, and doesn’t seem to care all that much about the laws of Moses. He knows the Messiah, the Savior, is at hand and he says that all must repent and be baptized—men and women alike, and regardless of social status. No wonder the Pharisees, Sadducees, and other elite people are shocked and enraged. Jesus appears and insists on being baptized, just like everybody else in the crowd attracted by John. John reluctantly agrees, knowing that Jesus is the expected Savior. Jesus breaks even more rules: he heals on the Sabbath, forgives sins, and invites all sorts of people to his table. He shares meals with tax collectors and prostitutes, as well as respectable, even wealthy, citizens. Is it any wonder that people were shocked? Jesus was a scandal. He was inclusive of all people without any limits or preconditions whatsoever. Jesus not only loved them, he made them feel wanted, cared for, and included. Should we not do the same? Remember, Jesus did say to follow him.

Él sabe que el Mesías, el Salvador, está cerca y dice que todos deben arrepentirse y ser bautizados—hombres y mujeres sin importar la condición social. No en balde los fariseos, saduceos y otros de la élite se muestran horrorizados y enfurecidos. Jesús aparece e insiste en ser bautizado, igual que toda la multitud que ha venido atraída por Juan. Juan asiente a regañadientes, pues sabe que Jesús es el Salvador esperado. Jesús sigue rompiendo reglas: cura en sábado, perdona los pecados e invita a toda clase de personas a sentarse a la mesa junto a él. Comparte comidas con los recaudadores de impuestos y las prostitutas, de la misma manera que lo hace con gente respetable y aún acaudalada. ¿Acaso nos puede sorprender que la gente estuviera horrorizada? Jesús era un escándalo. Él aceptaba a todas las personas sin poner límites ni condiciones. Jesús no sólo las amaba sino que también las hacía sentir queridas y acogidas. ¿No deberíamos nosotros hacer lo mismo? Recuerda, Jesús nos pidió que lo siguiéramos.
