Hlatorla del Cenao de Agrlcultura.--La isla de Puer~o Rico y otros islotes adyacentes fueron cedidos a los Esta.dos Unidos por Espana en octubre de 1898, de acuerdo con el Tratado de Pans, fil'llado el 10 de diciembre de ese mismo aiio, al finalizar de la Guerra Hispano8111ericana. El primer censo de agriculture. en Puerto Rico se hizo por la Oficina del Censo de los Estados UnJdos en 1910. Desde entonces, 1.m censo de agricultura siempre ha sido hecbo en conj~.mcim con el censo de poblacim en cads. censo decenal. En 1935, 1.m censo especial de Puerto Rico se hizo por la Aca1nistracioh de R~construccion de Puerto Rico. Base legal para el cenao de IIIIJO.-Prc.vision para el c-enso de 1940 se hizo en la ley que autor.izd e1 Censo Dlicilloquinto y censo.s subsequEOtes aprobeda e1 18 de ji.Ulio de 1929· En parte esta ley autoriz6, "~e 1.m censo de poblac:i6n, agricultura, r.iego, desagiie, distr1buc:t6n, deseapleo, y ·ll-1.nas se hara por el Director del Censo en el aiio de 193) y cada diez alios despues de esa fecha. Qastos de ftnca.--El formulario tuvo tres preguntas respecto a los gastos en 1939. la pregunta para la cantidad gastad! en 1939 para alimento para animales y aves de corral tambien incluy6 gastos para sal, condimentos, y materiales minerales. Gastos para estiercol y abono. incluyeron tambien gastos para piedra caliza, cal, etc. Gastos para jornales y salarios incluyeron solamente los gastos en dinero y excluyeron gastos para trabajos domesticos. Los gastos para alimento, estiercol y abono, y jomales y salarios incluyeron los gastos del propietario ademas de los del arrendatario. Equipo y convenienclas.-En 1940, un inventario rue hecho del ntimero de automoviles, camiones, tractores y maquinas y motores e1ectricos en cada finca. El enumerador fue instruldo que incluyera autDmr lo tanto, el total de las 4reas informadas para los cultivos individuales puede exceder mucho el area ocupada realmente por todos cui tivos fl'utales. Para la mayor parte de las frutas indi viduales y cocos, preguntas por separado fueron pedidas relativo al nU.ero de 4rboles que producen y el nU.ero de ll.rboles que no producen en abril 1, 1940, y relativo a la cantidad cosechada en 1939. El. valor de frutas, cat',, etc. , vendidos en 1939 incluye no solo el valor de las frutas, cat~, etc. , entregados al duefio sino tambUn el valor de las f':Ntas, ete., vendidos.
