FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK / DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR CONVERSION AND LENTEN RENEWAL Jesus has fled to the desert to sort through a powerful experience of affirmation by his Father. In a profoundly public moment of baptismal surrender, he is confirmed as the “Son of God.: He must grapple in all humility with the ramifications of this identity. His own understanding of himself would lead to a profound self-surrender to his Father’s will. In the desert, the devil plays on all the conventional meanings associated with the image of “the Son of God”: miracle worker, political hero, and leader. While Jesus’ life will testify too many of these, Jesus knows intuitively that there is more to this identity than the tradition indicates. In his hunger for clarity and truth, Jesus questions these limited cultural assumptions about the Messiah. In response to each challenge, Jesus drew upon God’s Word in the Book of Deuteronomy. Digging down into his recent experience of the Father, Jesus moves past physical desires and needs, past glory and fame, past seeking validation and pressing for proof. He moves beyond his own hungers and ambitions, as well as the expectations of others, to the essence of this intimate relationship of “Son-ship” within the boundaries of human flesh and time, and prevent ambition from jeopardizing God’s timing. The Father’s message indicated that being the Son entailed service. This means moving slowly while listening to the Spirit who will direct him, to stand with those who suffer, and be an advocate for those made marginal in society. Jesus’ self-understanding in relationship to the Father undergoes a process of self-emptying love. Each Lent, we enter into a conversion process, seeking clarity in our own faith journey. Moving more deeply into intimacy with God challenges our cultural and personal assumptions about what it is to become more fully Christian. Conversion of heart requires us to move beyond ambition and cultural assumptions to listen to God who heals, forgives, and stands humbly with those who are needy

CONVERSION Y RENOVACION DE CUARESMA Jesús huyo al desierto para ordenar sus ideas a través de una fuerte experiencia de afirmación del Padre. En un momento profundamente público de rendición bautismal, se confirma como el "Hijo de Dios. Y tiene que aferrarse con toda humildad a las ramificaciones de esta identidad. Good start to February & SCRIP! Last week, February 6th & 7th, we sold over $1,700 in SCRIP cards. With last week, we now have sold almost $382,000 SCRIP cards. For the fiscal year 2016, we are on track to sell almost $105,000 in cards and make Sacred Heart over $3,900. We now have 162 “customers” in our SCRIP program. Sacred Heart will hold their Fifth Annual Trivia Night on Saturday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Entry fee is $10 per person (request maximum of 8 to a table). We will start serving food at 6:00 pm so come and enjoy the best Reuben sandwiches, cheeseburgers, hamburgers, and hot dogs! The cost for a sandwich, chips, and a drink is only $5.00. Funds raised from the evening will help with the PSR and RCIA programs. BROTHERS KEEPER As many may remember, our “Brother’s Keeper” Food Collection Box was always given to The Kitchen for their pantry. Since they have not been doing this for a while, we have used the donated items to stock our “food pantry.” Although we do not have an official food pantry, we do use these donated items to assist the families that come to us for help. Please continue to give to the “Brother’s Keeper” program as all items are used to help those in need. The collection box is in the small room off the Gathering Space. Thank you so much Sacred Heart for your caring and your donations. The families we service appreciate your generosity and so do we. Thank you again.

Catholic Schoolhouse, serving homeschoolers in greater Springfield, is currently registering students for the 2016-2017 academic year at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Ozark. More than an academic co-op, Catholic Schoolhouse is a structured program meeting weekly for homeschoolers that includes chorus, two hours of classroom instruction, science experiments, art projects, and opportunities for socializing after class. WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church. World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated in the Church on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, and in parishes on the weekend of February 6-7, 2016. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation.
