The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.

Reflections by Father Karl 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

As a priest I have visited many people; young, old, rich, and poor. One thing I have noticed is that as people age they tend to become less attached to their possessions. Young people are often very interested in acquiring new things: they want to buy a house, have a nice car, or give things to their children. Financial security and professional success are great values. When people reach their fifties there comes a realization that this life is not going to last forever. Getting more things is no longer so important. At retirement age many people become more interested in having new experiences and traveling; or perhaps they begin planning for how they can help their grandchildren receive an education. When people are truly elderly their possessions matter less and less. I am sure that many of us have had the experience of visiting an elderly family member or friend and have left loaded down with pots and pans or a lamp. They try to give away their stuff. Often truly elderly people are able to live in the moment and enjoy the things and people around them: they are truly free to live from moment to moment. The readings this weekend challenge us to use our energy pursuing the things that really matter. We are reminded that this life can end at any point and security is an illusion. Perhaps we can learn a lesson from the older people around us and we can spend our time and energy on the things that last; improving our relationship with God and our family. Let us pray for that grace.

18° domingo del tiempo ordinario

Como sacerdote he visitado a muchas personas; jóvenes, ancianos, ricos, y pobres.
