From the Principal’s Desk... Hello Parents: What do you believe in? I think what drives us intrinsically is most important. What we believe in, the habits we create over time, and the behaviors that define our character make us the people that we are today. I would like to share with you a few items that I am passionate about, that I believe in.

I believe in education. Education can change lives. It can open doors that would otherwise remain closed. I am a first generation college graduate. I am the youngest of eight siblings and the only one to attend and graduate from college. I personally see the value and power of education daily. It has opened many doors for me that would have otherwise remained closed. It has enriched my life in so many different ways and expanded my horizons, my possibilities, my life, and my career goals. What education has done for me cannot be fully captured in words. Education changed my life. I believe in relationships. The more you know and understand a person, the more you can reach, help, and influence that person. Without a good relationship, it is difficult to educate that person. To truly educate someone you must connect with them, you must gain a sense of understanding about that person. A teacher connected with me at a young age, in high school, and encouraged me to put my fear aside and attend college even though I did not have the confidence to do so at the time. I remember thinking, “No one in my family has ever attended college, so why should I?” I did take the teachers advice, thankfully, and I went to college and I was successful. This happened because a teacher created a relationship with me based on trust, and because of that relationship I took their advice, I took a chance, and it changed my life. I believe in continuous improvement. I have over twenty years of experience in education as a teacher, as a coach, and now as an

Creo en la educación. La educación puede cambiar vidas. Puede abrir puertas que de lo contrario permanecerían cerradas. Soy la primera generación graduado de la universidad. Soy el menor de ocho hermanos y el único que asistió y se graduó de la universidad. Personalmente, día con día veo el valor y el poder de la educación. Me ha abierto muchas puertas que de lo contrario se me hubieran cerrado. Ha enriquecido mi vida en diferentes formas y ampliado mis horizontes, mis posibilidades, mi vida y mis objetivos profesionales. Lo que la educación ha hecho por mí, no puede capturarse completamente en palabras. La educación cambió mi vida. Creo en las relaciones. A medida que se conoce y entiende más a una persona, más puede lograr, ayudar e influenciar a esa persona. Sin una buena relación, es difícil educar a esa persona. Para verdaderamente educar a alguien, debe relacionarse con él/ella, debe ganarse el sentido de comprensión sobre esa persona. A muy temprana edad, recibí el apoyo de un maestro de la secundaria y me impulsó a dejar atrás mi miedo y asistir a la universidad, aún incluso cuando no sentía la confianza de hacerlo en ese momento. Recuerdo pensar, “nadie en mi familia ha asistido a la universidad, ¿por qué debería hacerlo yo? Tomé el consejo del maestro y fui a la universidad y tuve éxito. Esto pasó porque un maestro fomentó una relación de apoyo conmigo basada en la confianza y debido a esa relación tomé su consejo, la oportunidad y esto cambió mi vida. Creo en el mejoramiento continuo. Tengo más de veinte años de experiencia en la educación como maestro, como entrenador y ahora como administrador. También continúo educándome. I have obtained a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, and I just completed an Education Specialist Degree. Now, at the young age of forty six, I am embarking on the pursuit of a Doctoral Degree in Education. Some people wonder why I continue to go to school and my response to them is, “Why not?”. I am very proud of what I have learned and what I have experienced so far in my life. However, what excites me most is the possibility of learning something new today and what tomorrow may bring. At Open House in September, Mr. Byrd shared our building goals for the year. One of those goals is to increase our graduation rate. At the start of the school year, the class of 2015 was projected to be our largest ever. We all need to work to ensure that every single potential graduate meets our goal. Counselors have been meeting with seniors to review their credits and graduation status. Please discuss graduation and future goals with your student and check their progress using the Parent Portal, accessible on the district website. At Parent/Teacher Conferences this November you will also be able to check your senior student’s outstanding fees and community service hours. Remember, all fees must be paid and community service hours must be complete. Every year, we have students who jeopardize their graduation status by waiting until the last minute to fulfill all of their requirements. Help your student to keep on top of his/her responsibilities. Check on his/her standing this November at conferences and then monitor his/her progress throughout the year. Along with the Parent Portal, we invite you to contact your student’s teachers and counselor via phone or email. Working together, we can make this our biggest Tomcat Graduation yet. Graduation Check- Keep Your Senior on Track  Attend Parent/Teacher Conferences - talk to teachers and counselors; check on fees and community service hours  Talk about graduation at home - help your student make plans for after high school and frequently remind him/her of those goals  Check your student’s grades using the Parent Portal - you can sign up for access at conferences  Communicate as often as needed with your student’s teachers and counselor - make sure you know how your student is doing

Assessment Pick-Up at Conferences All parents can pick up the results of last spring’s assessments at Parent/Teacher Conferences. Last spring, all students took either a State or local assessment as a part of the State of Illinois testing days. Families can pick up the results of the following tests: Freshmen - 8th Grade ISAT Results Sophomores - 9th Grade Explore* Results Juniors - 10th Grade Plan* Results Seniors - 11th Grade PSAE Results *Explore and Plan are exams used to predict performance on the ACT college entrance exam. They are used to monitor progress and for class placement. All of these assessment results will help you to gauge your student’s progress and help you and your student to make plans for after graduation.

Parents are often the best educational advocates for their children; you know your child’s strengths and challenges and can help implement positive changes based on both. The following tips can help parents advocate for their children in a constructive way. 1.

Get to know the people who make decisions about your child’s education: Connect with educators and administrators in both casual and formal settings. Talk with your child’s teachers on a regular basis.

Parents should maintain an organized file of educational records and assessment information. Take notes during telephone and face-to-face meetings, and ask for people’s full names and contact information when communicating by phone or by email. Read articles on learning, attend conferences, and join the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTA). Ask professionals lots of questions, and don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if their answers are confusing or complicated. Come to meetings prepared; be clear, calm and direct when speaking. While assertiveness and persistence are crucial, anger and aggressiveness can work against you and can damage important relationships. By highlighting a struggling child’s capabilities and talents, you not only help professionals know your child as a whole person, you can also assist in identifying learning accommodations.

Involve your child in decision making as early as you can:

Mastering self-advocacy skills is one of the keys to becoming a successful adult. Resist the natural urge to pave every road for your child, and respect and support your child's need to take informed academic risks.

The English Department in support of the District initiative of Inspiring Learners sent a number of English teachers to present at the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) Conference held on October 17th and 18th at the Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake, sharing their successes with teachers from all over the state. The conference’s theme for 2014 was “(E)merging Literacies”. Senior teachers, Rachel Nenni, Alan Scott, Amanda Swiatek, Melinda Thomas presented a workshop titled, “Aristotle Gets a Job: 21st Century Twists on the Ancient Art of Rhetoric.” The session included a discussion of the process of developing students’ argument skills in a variety of outlets, including Socratic seminars. By the end of the semester, their students are using their newly honed rhetorical skills to persuade college admissions and future employers of their abilities. Junior and sophomore teachers, Natalie Mares and Amanda Giudice, presented “Traditional Texts vs. PARCC: Structured Process Approach to Preparing Students to Write for the 21st Century.” As all Illinois teachers prepare for this new generation assessment, participants in this session learned how to prepare students for the PARCC through a structured process approach to writing. The presenters demonstrated gateway lessons and activities, blending traditional texts like A Raisin in the Sun and The Great Gatsby with 21st Century texts about current issues. Finally, sophomore teachers Francesca Manzella, Amanda Guidice, and Drew Herrmann presented “Kony and Koala Bears: Researching Global Issues through Unconventional Text Types” where they shared their successful experiences implementing a research unit on global issues. Students created children’s books as a final assessment. Students used the synthesis skills they will be required to have for the PARCC exam, to create an age appropriate re-telling or allegory of a global issue such as the education of women in the Middle East or clean drinking water in Africa. Drew Herrmann also shared his experience with making the unit into a service learning activity as well, by bringing his students to Gates Elementary

English and Fine Arts continued from page 14… School to share their finished products with young students. These teachers were able to gather and share ideas with English teachers from all over Illinois, bringing those ideas back to their classrooms and ensuring that EAHS is staying current and always challenging our students with assignments that are rigorous and relevant. The Fine Arts Department organized several events for students, parents, and the community at the end of October, including a jazz band concert and the choir’s annual fall fling concert. This year, the drama program will be presenting the play, Almost, Maine, in November. In Visual Arts, students are preparing for The Evening with the Arts, as well as several local competitions, and for the 2nd year in a row, East High will be hosting the District IX Illinois Music Educators’ Association (IMEA) Festival the weekend before Thanksgiving break. El Departamento de inglés en apoyo a la iniciativa del Distrito Inspirando a los estudiantes (Inspiring Learners), envió a varios maestros de inglés para presentarse en la Asociación de maestros de inglés de Illinois (IATE), la conferencia se llevó a cabo el 17 y 18 de octubre en el Hotel Holiday Inn en Crystal Lake, compartiendo sus éxitos con los maestros a nivel estatal. El tema de la conferencia para el 2014 fue “(E)merging Literacies”. Los maestros del nivel senior, Rachel Nenni, Alan Scott, Amanda Swiatek, Melinda Thomas presentaron el taller titulado, “Aristotle Gets a Job: 21st Century Twists on the Ancient Art of Rhetoric”. La sesión incluye una discusión sobre el proceso del desarrollo de las habilidades de argumento de los estudiantes en una variedad de medios, incluyendo los seminarios socráticos. Para el final del semestre, los estudiantes usarán sus nuevas habilidades retóricas para persuadir las admisiones a la universidad y serán futuros empleadores de sus habilidades. Greetings from the Special Education Department. We are excited to have started the year with roaring success! So far this year, a 75% turnout of parents have attended Individual Education Plan (IEP) staffings for their students. Let's continue to increase that percentage towards 100%. Open House was also a big success, with many of our parents getting a taste of the high expectations our teachers are placing on students. Parents, you are the biggest ally in our students’ academic and behavioral success. We look forward to seeing you all at Parent/Teacher Conferences in November. School is off to a quick start and the Biology students at East Aurora High School are digging deep to learn new exciting ways of thinking. At the freshman level the graduates of 2018 are learning to ask questions of the world around them and finding unique ways to get answers themselves. Our classes are practicing designing unique experiments to explore concepts in science and generate meaningful data to help lead them to a new understanding. This past month students worked with Bess Bugs, a large species of beetle, to investigate body size to strength ratio. Students assembled experiments and tested 300 beetles of different masses to find out if there was any connection between their mass and the amount of pennies they could pull on a sled. Each class participated in the experiments and did an amazing job handling our test subjects with respect and care! In Advanced Placement Biology, a college level science laboratory course, our classes dove right in and started to explore the life giving properties of water! The graduates of 2015/2016 are creating many experiments all year testing questions they find interesting about the models and concepts we have been studying. To investigate the unique properties of water on the structures of plants, they constructed 15 different laboratory setups. Their results helped build an understanding of how unique properties of water help breathe life into the Kingdom that is so vital to the rest of life on this blue gem we call Earth. En el nivel académico freshman, los graduandos de 2018 están aprendiendo a realizar preguntas del mundo a nuestro alrededor y buscando maneras únicas de encontrar las respuestas. Nuestras clases están aprendiendo a diseñar experimentos únicos para explorar conceptos en ciencias naturales y generar datos significantes para ayudar a conducirlos a una nueva comprensión. El pasado mes, los estudiantes trabajaron con Bess Bugs, una especie grande de escarabajo, para investigar el tamaño del cuerpo para fortalecer el índice. East Aurora High School, History Fair is a required component of all Honors-level courses offered in the Social Studies Department, including the Magnet Academy and Advanced Placement (AP). Students begin working on this project in September and will not complete it until December. This program is included in our curriculum because it offers a creative, hands-on approach to help students develop basic reading, writing, reasoning, and critical thinking skills, as well as build valuable research and communication skills. Students participating in History Fair are asked to do research, predominantly outside of school, on a historical topic that interests them. Students must choose whether to present their research and findings in the form of a research paper, exhibit, media documentary, or live performance. Students may choose to complete the project independently or with a partner(s) depending on their project-type. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors have the opportunity to advance from our school history fair through the various levels of competition including: Regionals, Chicago Metro Finals, Illinois History Expo in Springfield, IL, and National History Day (NHD) Finals in Washington D.C. The East Aurora community has been well represented even at the highest levels of this competition, with students advancing to the NHD finals five times between 2005-2011. A project of this magnitude cannot be completed overnight, over a weekend or even a span of 2-3 weeks. This is an extensive research project that has been broken down into smaller steps (see schedule below). What you can do to support your child in their successful completion of History Fair: Check-up on your child and ask them about their topic, research, and overall progress on the project. Provide access/transportation to the library, computer, internet, project partners (if applicable). Provide a well-lit and quiet environment where your child can work on the project. History Fair continued from page 18… En la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora, la Feria de Historia es un componente obligatorio para todos los cursos de nivel avanzado-honor ofrecidos en el departamento de ciencias sociales, incluyendo la Academia Magnet y Nivel avanzado (por sus siglas en inglés AP Advanced Placement). Los estudiantes empiezan a trabajar en este proyecto en septiembre y lo terminarán hasta diciembre. Este programa está incluido en nuestro plan de estudio, ya que ofrece una estrategia creativa y práctica para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar las habilidades básicas en lectura, escritura, razonamiento y pensamiento crítico; como también fomentar investigación valiosa y habilidades de comunicación. A los estudiantes que participan en la Feria de la Historia, se les pide realizar una investigación, predominantemente afuera de la escuela, sobre un tema histórico que sea de su interés. Los estudiantes deben elegir, ya sea presentar su investigación y hallazgos en forma de documento de investigación, exhibición, documental o presentación en vivo. The Bilingual department is offering a new course in Mexican history this year, all in Spanish. Students will develop their Spanish vocabulary as they think critically about events that shaped the nation of Mexico. In English Language Learning, teachers worked hard all summer creating lessons that mirror general education English curriculum. This means that students who move from English as a Second Language to Sophomore or Junior English will be even better prepared and even more psyched for the challenge! Este año, el Departamento bilingüe está ofreciendo un curso nuevo sobre la Historia de México, todo en español. Los estudiantes desarrollarán su vocabulario en español mientras piensan críticamente sobre los eventos que formaron la nación de México. En el aprendizaje del idioma inglés, los maestros trabajaron arduamente todo el verano creando lecciones que reflejan el plan de estudios en inglés de educación general. ¡Esto significa que los estudiantes que avancen de Inglés como Segundo idioma a inglés de nivel Sophomore o Junior, estarán más preparados e incluso más entusiasmado para el desafío!

Last month, members of the Bilingual Honor Society created an Ofrenda (a memorial altar to loved ones who have passed away) to help everyone at EHS understand the cultural significance of Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Bilingual Honor Society is for students of English as a Second Language who show academic distinction. For more information, talk to Ms. Cardona in room 277 or Ms. Palmer in room 271. The club does community service, college visits and fun social activities!

French Honor Society has had a busy semester at East! In September, five new members were welcomed: Briana Gregory, Ivan Martinez, Cecilia Montenegro, Guillermo Rodriguez, and Danitza Vargas. Officers elected to serve for the 14-15 year are: Janelle Avila, Israel Sanchez, Shantae Tucker, Stephanie Mata, Misti Merel, and Daniela Nunez. All executive board members are seniors this year. Throughout the fall, SHF has been completing community service, specifically helping out at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora. The hard work given by these students during their hours of service is truly rewarding in the end. SHF will be back at FMSC on November 15th and January 31st to continue to give back. In addition, the annual Fall Coat Drive collected coats and warm items to be donated to the local Aurora community. Once again, the event was a great success. Merci beaucoup to all who contributed! ¡La Sociedad Nacional Francesa ha tenido un semestre muy ocupado en el Este de Aurora! Tri-M is busy planning some more great service projects, fundraisers and field trips. On November 4, we have scheduled our first college field trip of the year to visit NIU. We will tour the school as well as get some information about their music program. We also have our second fundraiser of the year scheduled on Thursday, November 20 to Luigi’s. Tri-M will be selling discounted tickets that include all you can eat pizza as well as some special pricing on games. The EA Jazz band will also be playing. We also have our next service project scheduled on November 22 where Tri-M will be selling concessions at the IMEA festival to be held here at East Aurora. We hope that you can come to some of our upcoming activities! Tri-M ha estado ocupado planeando más proyectos de servicio, recaudaciones de fondos y viajes de estudio. The band has finished their Marching Band Season and we are well on our way into concert season. Band students have been very busy this year performing at home football games and the Panther Marching Band Review. All three curricular bands, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, will present their first concert of the year on Thursday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the Hawks Auditorium. Admission to the concert is only $2, and all of that money goes right back into the band program to provide more opportunities for the students. The East Aurora Music Department will again be hosting the District 9 ILMEA Organization Concert. Talented high school Band, Choir and Orchestra musicians will come together from all over the area to East Aurora High School for a day of rehearsals and a concert at 3:00 p.m. Last year was the first year we hosted and we are excited to have this opportunity again. The concert is at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22 nd in the Kivisto Gym. You won't believe what these young musicians can do. The Fine Arts Department presents:

Almost, Maine Almost, Maine will be presented in the Little Theatre on November 14th, at 7:00 p.m. and November 15th, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available in advance from cast and crew members, or by email [email protected]. Tickets will also be available at the door until sold out. Almost, Maine is a play by John Cariani, comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine. It premiered at the Portland Stage Company in Portland, Maine in 2004 where it broke box office records and garnered critical acclaim. It is now the most produced play in North American high schools, recently supplanting Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. A New York Times review: "John Cariani‟s Almost, Maine is a series of nine amiably absurdist vignettes about love, with a touch of good-natured magic realism...This is a beautifully structured play, with nifty surprise endings (most but not all of them happy) and passing references to characters from other vignettes, which slyly tell us more about them. Mr. Cariani, describes the play‟s subject as „falling in and out of love.‟ It is just as much about pain.”

East Aurora High School has a new film club. It is hosted by English teacher Alan Scott, who, in addition to being a lifelong film buff, has taken six film analysis courses at College of DuPage and a class taught by Roger Ebert at The University of Chicago, he wrote a fine arts film column for the Elmhurst College paper titled “Shadows on the Wall,” and has attended numerous film festivals including Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival. Mr. Scott’s goals for the club are to create a meeting place for film lovers to enjoy, share, and discuss film; to promote film as an art form; to enrich the viewing experience through analysis and discussion; to introduce students to the broad range of film genres and themes available to them; and to help build and nurture the school community. Every viewing will include an introduction, which will provide background context and essential questions to consider while watching. A post-viewing discussion will encourage students to engage with open-ended questions for a deeper engagement with the text. Mr. Scott is also considering organizing an Up-All-Night movie marathon event where students will seek sponsorship to watch fifteen hours of movies for a charitable cause. Films ranging from Star Wars to Singin’ in the Rain will be watched on a weekly basis. The first event the cadets participated in was the cardboard boat races at Mastodon Lake in Phillips Park. Giovanni Gutierrez and Ricardo Gonzalez manned the boat from the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation and got 1st place in the non-profit division. These two cadets, along with Lorenzo Salgado, were awarded as Students-of-the-Month by the school board for their support of the event and the charity. The unit then conducted a ceremony in front of East High and at the Magnet School commemorating the events of September 11, 2001. The students were reminded of what happened that fateful day and that we as, a nation, need to be ever vigilant to avoid another terrorist event in the United States. The unit then marched in the Fiestas Patrias Parade on Sunday September 14 th. The event was held in downtown Aurora and was attended by 100 cadets. The marksmanship team began their season at the Freeport Invitational Rifle Meet with a second place finish out of 20 teams who entered. The meet was a good opener as a number of new shooters had the opportunity to get their first meet under their belt. A number of cadets also shot personal bests and look forward to another successful season. The Dance Drum and Bugle team had the opportunity to participate in the 75th anniversary of the Sunnymere Senior Center. The cadets set up a dinner party and learned history firsthand from the residents. The academic team began their season at the first Brain Brawl of the year, held at Westinghouse College Prep in Chicago, Illinois. The team did well as the meet was used as a practice round for the upcoming season. In addition to the league, the team plans to enter two tournaments and hopes to qualify for Brain Brawl Nationals. The Fitness team attended their first PT Meet of the season at Bloom Trail High School. The unit was able to enter two teams in the event which included Dodgeball, Volleyball, Tug-of-War, a Relay Race, Push-ups and Sit-ups. The team won the event for the second year in a row The Drill Team has had a large turn out this year and looks forward to their season which begins at Zion Benton High School on the first of November. East Aurora High School and the Aurora Police Department support the position of a School Resource Officer at East Aurora High School. The role of the Resource Officer is to serve as a support to the educational program and assist the school administration in providing a safe and secure environment that is conducive to learning. Some of the duties of the School Resource Officer are to conduct criminal investigations of offenses that occur on school property and take appropriate action, be a liaison between the school administration and the police administration, assist the school with security issues, attend extracurricular activities, and assist students who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
