On Saturday, May 7, 2016, GPISD voters approved a $290 million bond proposal. The District will use the bond to address aging facilities, student safety and 21st century education. Plans will include renovations to all 25 educational facilities and 9 support facilities. Specific uses for the bond funds include: • Rebuilding 6 Elementary Campuses • Building North Shore Senior High School 10th Grade Center • Renovating and Upgrading all other Campuses and Facilities • Land Acquisition for Future Facility Opportunities

More than 70 percent of GPISD buildings are 24-77 years old, and a recent assessment by independent school facilities experts identified more than $500 million in renovation

and construction needs throughout the district. These include mechanical, electrical, heating and cooling systems that are reaching the end of their life cycles, as well as addressing the changes in state and federal standards and regulations. The $290 million bond represents those needs deemed most critical which is approximately one-third of the overall total cost identified. A diverse citizens’ committee of more than 30 individuals helped determine priorities and made recommendations to the GPISD Board of Trustees. The Galena Park Independent School District began the process of accepting bids for professional services made possible by the 2016 voter-approved $290 million bond. The first phase of selecting professional services is expected to

be completed by August 1, 2016. The next phase in the Bond Project will be the design phase, with an anticipated completion date near the end of August 2016. On behalf of the children of Galena Park ISD, THANK YOU!

2016 SUMMER FOOD HURRICANE SEASON SERVICE PROGRAM BE PREPARED From June 6 – July 28, 2016, the Galena Park Independent School District will be sponsoring the Texas Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program by providing free breakfast and lunch to all children 18 years of age and younger. Regulations require that meals must be eaten at the school. Children do not have to sign up for meals. Nearly 600 GPISD students received free eyeglasses as a result of the See to Succeed Program, a partnership between Houston Department of Health and Human Services, University of Houston, San Jacinto College, Kids Vision for Life and the Berkeley Eye Center. The initiative aims to improve vision by performing annual vision exams and providing eyewear.

For the first time the North Shore Mustangs Girls Basketball team (36-2) advanced to the Class 6A state tournament under the direction of Coach Allison Campbell. The Lady Mustangs fell to the Duncanville Panthers in the girls Class 6A state semifinal game, despite the loss Chasity Patterson, Alyssa Okeone and Victoria Blankenship turned in outstanding performances.

The North Shore Mustangs defeated Austin Westlake 2114 in the Class 6A Division I Championship football game. For a contest that featured two high powered offenses, in the end, it was defense that won the game for the Mustangs. This was North Shore’s second state championship having previously won the 2003 5A Division I title.

April Murphy, a 1977 graduate of North Shore High School, is living her dream as an artist, with her own studio at Winter Street Gallery in Houston, where 95 artists create their works in 77 studios! April shows and sells her work at art festivals around Texas.

Aproximadamente 600 estudiantes de GPISD recibieron anteojos gratuitos como resultado del Programa Ver para ser Exitoso, una asociación entre el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Houston, la Universidad de Houston, el Colegio San Jacinto, Kids Vision for Life y el Centro Berkeley Eye. El objetivo de la iniciativa es mejorar la visión realizando exámenes de visión anuales y proporcionando anteojos.

Por primera vez el equipo de Básquetbol Femenil North Shore Mustangs con marcador de 36-2 avanzó al torneo estatal Clase 6A bajo la dirección de la entrenadora Allison Campbell. Las Lady Mustangs cayeron ante las Duncanville Panthers en el juego de semifinales estatales Clas 6A femenil, a pesar de la derrota Chasity Patterson, Alyssa Okeone y Victoria Blankenship desempeñaron un gran trabajo.

Los North Shore Mustangs derrotaron a Austin Westlake 21-14 en juego de fútbol americano disputado en el Campeonato Clase 6A División I. Para una competencia que protagonizaron dos ofensivas poderosas, y al final fue la defensa de los Mustangs que ganó el juego. Este es el segundo campeonato estatal para North Shore habiendo ganado previamente el título 5A División I en el 2003.

Jonathan Sampson estudiante de la Preparatoria North Shore Senior recibe una beca para el Instituto de Tecnología Massachusetts (MIT), el cual es una universidad de investigación privada en Cambridge, Massachusetts.

El Equipo de Danza D-Verse de la Preparatoria North Shore Senior ganó el título Gran Campeón Nacional en la Competencia Nacional de Danza HTE en San Antonio, Texas – ¡por tercer año consecutivo! La Dra. Kayleigh Eaves Temple, periodoncista con consultorio dental privado en Tyler, Texas, asistió a las escuelas en Galena Park ISD desde la primaria hasta la preparatoria y terminó su carrera de Cirujano Dental en la Facultad de Medicina Dental en la Universidad de Columbia.

Canessa Swanson, graduada de la Preparatoria Galena Park en el 2012, actualmente asiste a la Universidad Estatal Jackson en Jackson, Mississippi donde está previsto que se graduará con honores y una Calificación Promedio Perfecta de 4.0.

Wayne Oquin, graduado de la Preparatoria North Shore en 1996, actualmente funge como Presidente del Departamento de Capacitación de Oído en Juilliard y también funge como un miembro de las facultades de Teoría y Estudios de Posgrado.
