Gage Park High School 20062007 AP SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMA DE ESTUDIOS Instructor: Mr Diaz Course Description: The AP Spanish Language course is intended for students who wish to develop proficiency and integrate their skills, using authentic materials and sources. The course helps prepare students to demonstrate their level of Spanish proficiency across three communicative modes: interpersonal, interpretative and presentational. The class encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and compositions. The AP Spanish Language course is intended to be equivalent to a fifth and sixth semester college and university course that focuses on speaking and writing in the target language at an advanced level. In addition, this course will also serve as a springboard to AP Spanish Literature course with the literary pieces or readings spread over two years. Half of the literature readings will be assigned to students in the AP Spanish Language and a more extensive reading list and a larger number of activities will be assigned in the AP Spanish Literature class the following year. Objectives: Students will have the ability to comprehend and distinguish between formal and informal spoken Spanish. Students will be able to compose expository passages, and have the aptitude to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency. Students will be able to understand a lecture in Spanish and to participate actively in discussions on literary topics in the target language. Students will be able to do a close reading of literary texts of all genres in Spanish; and they will be able to critically analyze the form and content of literary works (including poetry) orally and in writing using appropriate terminology. This class will promote the student’s ability to: a. Master extensive grammar and writings tasks. To develop the student’s basic knowledge and skills on critical analysis through the use of proper literary techniques when analyzing Spanish literary works. b. The student will have a strong command of Spanish linguistic skills that support communicative ability. c. Students are required to experience, interpret, and evaluate literature through fully understanding the complexity of a literary text. This particular syllabus is based on analyzing the readings assigned for each class, and discussing them in small groups and with the whole class. Students will apply critical analysis skills in making decisions or in advancing a theoretical position. d. Evaluate alternative arguments, decision strategies, or theories within a systematic framework. e. Write a well taught 250 word composition using correct, structure, grammar and punctuation. Students will learn to evaluate alternative arguments while analyzing literary works. As the students read they should consider a work’s structure, style, themes, and the elements of figurative language. Individually and in collaborative projects, the students will write papers which utilize primary and secondary source materials to advance and support persuasive hypotheses. Instructional Materials:
This course will provided students with regular opportunities, in class or in a language laboratory, to develop their speaking skills in a variety of settings. Students will analyze different types of discourse, topics, and registers. Students will use various assortment of reading material beyond the textbook using the following materials: •
Newspaper and magazine articles from all over the world utilizing the internet to view different type of discourse and registers, for example (lenguaje periodistico, academico y literario)

Listen to different audio resources such as; radio stations, television programs, newscasts or other sources that will enhance their knowledge and understanding.

Various authors that are not on the reading list and materials that is pertinent to their everyday life.
•
Audiovisual materials such as plays like; Bernalda Alba, Juan Tenorio, La Celestina. Movies such as Lazarillo de Tormes, Agua para Chocolate, Diario de un Motociclista and a different array of movies clips, documentaries and newscasts.

Recorders and Karaoke for students can practice and expand their linguistic abilities. Students will be able to conduct and give an interview. Students will do have to do an oral presentation every quarter as stated by the instructor.
Students are required to have a Journal throughout the year and it will be a requirement to have this in order to be in the Spanish Literature class the following year. In addition students will write on a variety of topics and issues during the year. Methods of Assessment Students will have required reading and writing assignments for each week. Response to readings will include both graded and upgraded assignments. Students will discuss readings in small groups and make presentations to the class as a whole. After each major assignment, there will be an essay or a project. Clear rubrics will be provided for each essay and project. Students will also be given the chance to see and respond to materials taken from previous AP exams. Each student will be assessed individually and in overall group participation. Goal 1: Communicate in languages other than English. Class Rules Spanish and only Spanish will be used exclusively by teacher and students in the class. If Students or teacher break the rule they will be punished by the Kangaroo court which will implement its proper punishment, for example: singing in class, purchasing donuts, extra writing, etc,etc. Students will: Be respectful. Be punctual daily. (Being punctual means to be in your seat when bell rings) Bring needed supplies daily. Supplies include: textbook, journal, 2 blue/black pens; red pen; highlighter; Spanish notebook. Adhere to all school and classroom rules. Maintain a notebook/journal exclusively for Spanish class notes, papers and handouts.
