ROMAN OCCUPATION OF GAUL ESP NIMES TO NARBONNE The major cities, beautiful monuments and archaeological sites along with a multitude of well-preserved ruins and great crossroads illustrate the influence of the Roman civilization on Gaul.
At the end of the Third Punic War in 149 BC the Romans ruled most of the Iberian peninsula, but they had not conquered the territories along the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and Spain. In a series of military expeditions in the 120s, they brought under control some of the local tribes and, with the acceptance of other tribes and the support of Massilia (now Marseilles), a Greek town and a longtime ally of Rome, they were able to gain control of the coastal region of Southern France (called Gallia Transalpina or Ulterior to distinguish it from Gallia Cisalpina or Citerior, i.e. northern Italy). In the years 81 to 96 AD the Romans traced and paved the mythic route, said to have been traveled by Heracles. They called it Via Domitia and it was the first
Page 44 | LAUTHENTIC FRANCE
Roman road built in Gaul. The construction of the road was commissioned by Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, whose name it bore, following the defeat of the Allobroges and Averni by himself and Quintus Fabius Maximus Allobrogicus. In 118 BC Gnaeus Domitius also established a fortified garrison at Narbo on the coast, near Spain, to guard its construction. It soon developed into a full Roman colony and called Colonia Narbo Martius (now Narbonne). Eventually the whole province became known as Gallia Narbonensis and another road (Via Aurelia) linked it with Italy along the coast. Gallia Narbonensis was also known as Provincia Nostra (“Our Province”) or simply Provincia (“the province”).
Which small towns and villages played an important role? Via Domitia can be traced on topographical maps overprinted with the ancient route. Traveling between Nîmes (Nemausus) and Narbonne (Narbo Martius) we can admire to this day the impressive mosaics, great arenas, rich museum collections, a one-of-a-kind aqueduct and a network of roads. The following locations are all powerful reminders of this great Gallo-Roman culture, architecture and civil engineering: Nîmes (Nemausus) Uchaud Vergèze Codognan Gallargues-le-Montueux Ambrussum Vérargues Lunel-Viel Saint-Geniès-des-Mourgues Saint-Brès Lunel-Vieil Castries Le Crès Castelnau-le-Lez Montpellier Montbazin Mèze Pinet Saint-Thibéry Béziers l’oppidum d’Ensérune Narbonne (Narbo Martius) At Narbonne, a section of the Via Domitia is exposed in the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. The Via Domitia crosses the river Aude by a seven-arched bridge at the site of the Pont des Marchands. In between the cities that Via Domitia linked, there was a network of mansions at distances of a day’s journey for a loaded cart, at which shelter, provisions and horses could have been obtained.
AUGUST, 2022 | Page 45
Why they decided to make Narbonne their capital?
archeological museum displays many antique objects from the region.
Via Domitia run through Nîmes (Nemausus), followed the coastal plain along the Gulf of Lion and at Narbonne (Narbo Martius) it met the Via Aquitania (which led toward the Atlantic Ocean through Toulouse and Bordeaux).
Nîmes (Nemausus) Dubbed the most Roman city outside Italy, Nîmes became a Roman colony as Colonia Nemausus sometime before 28 BC, as witnessed by the earliest coins, which bear the abbreviation NEM. COL, “Colony of Nemausus”.Veterans of Julius Caesar’s legions in his Nile campaigns were given plots of land to cultivate on the plain of Nîmes. It increased in wealth under Roman rule during the rule of Agrippa and Hadrian.
Narbonne was capital of the Gallia Narbonensis and the residence of the Roman proconsul. Situated at the river Aude, it was at a crucial strategic crossroads of the Via Domitia and the Via Aquitania, and it was an accessible, but well-defensible, port at that time. This “cusp point” in the Roman westwards expansion and ensuing supply, communication and fortification was a very important asset, and was treated as such. The bulk of trade with Rome was carried out by sea and a shipping company of Narbonne had a permanent statio (agency) at Ostia (near Rome, Italy). In 45 BC Julius Caesar installed the veterans of the 10th legion in Narbonne and developed the port as a competitor to Marseille (Massalia) while Marseille was revolting against Roman control. In 27 BC he visited Narbonne himself. Even though Narbonne gave its name to the province and was the seat of government, it does not have many ruins. The city posses beautiful stones though, a Horreum—a type of underground arcades that served as a Roman forum. There are also marble cobblestones that was part of the celebrated Domitia route connecting Rome to the Iberian peninsula via the alpine hills and the Durance Valley in Provence. The
Page 46 | LAUTHENTIC FRANCE
Several famous monuments are in Nîmes, such as the Arena of Nîmes and the Maison Carrée. Because of this, Nîmes is often referred to as the French Rome. Nîmes has one of the best preserved amphitheaters that is the same impressive size as the one in Arles. The competition between the two cities was the reason for the many monuments. The famous Maison Carrée, the central temple of the forum, is known not so much for its style, but for the integrity of its architecture and the interior houses superb Gallo-Roman mosaics. The Tour de Magne is perched on the highest point in the city and is evidence of the massive defense system of the Romans. The Castellum, a receptacle tank at the end of the 50-foot canal that carried water to the city, was a rare type of Roman architecture. Other things to be discovered in Nîmes include the Temple of Diane covered with a luxurious vegetation and the Gardens of the Source (designed in the 18th century).
“It is More Similar to Italy than to a Province” - Pliny the Elder, the governor of Gallia Narbonensis in 70 AD. “That part of the Gallias which is washed by the inland (Mediterranean) sea is called the province of Gallia Narbonensis. (..) It is divided from Italy by the river Varus, and by the range of the Alps, the great safeguards of the Roman Empire. From the remainder of Gaul, on the north, it is separated by the mountains Cebenna and Jura. In the cultivation of the soil, the manners and civilization of the inhabitants, and the extent of its wealth, it is surpassed by none of the provinces, and, in short, might be more truthfully described as a part of Italy than as a province” - Pliny the Elder “Historia Naturalis”, Translation by John Bostock and Henry Thomas Riley. “In no province of the Roman Empire was Latin culture more firmly rooted, and in none did it show more Roman vigorous growth than in Gaul, especially in the south. (..) The native language had given place to that of Italy, and the Latin of Bordeaux was said to have been the purest in Gaul. Provence is still full of splendid remains of Roman architecture, and Italy itself cannot show anything
superior to the temples at Nimes and Vienne, the amphitheatres at Nimes and Arles, the great theatre at Orange, and the stupendous aqueduct of the Pont du Gard which dwarfs those of the Campagna.” - Thomas Graham Jackson “Byzantine and Romanesque Architecture”, 1913. “A colony was settled here by Marcus Agrippa, the son-in-law of Augustus: succeeding emperors took a delight in embellishing Nimes with both sacred and civil edifices; no place on our side of the Alps retains so many, or such perfect monuments of ancient taste and magnificence, besides innumerable fragments, which have been made use of in building walls and gates in ages of barbarism. As the coin struck in this colony exhibits a crocodile tied to a palmtree, and the heads of Caius and Lucius Caesar, sons of Agrippa, it is probable that the veterans who formed this settlement, were drawn from legions that had served in Egypt and Syria, under the command of Agrippa, or his sons”, Henry Swinburne - “Travels through Spain in the Years 1775 and 1776” (to which is added a “Journey from Bayonne to Marseille”, 1787 Edition)

A CITY OF TWO TALES Montpellier tells a story of old and new alike. What we’re saying is that there are two parts to Montpellier: the old city and the new. And, of course, both are downright beautiful. Nonetheless, it’s the old city that lures most visitors to its labyrinth of hilly cobbled streets, lined with bunting and dotted by chic boutiques, art galleries, bars, cafés, and restaurants.

Whichever side of town you decide to explore, do yourself a favor and book a tour. Take a self-guided tour and enjoy the city at your own pace. Or, join one of the many guided walking tours to get a taste of the city from an expert perspective. A hidden gem: Montpellier Qula City Trails offer an affordable and fun way to explore the city through their app-guided tour that includes fun, educational games for the whole family.
EAT WITH THE LOCALS: ÉBULLITION “The best restaurant in town” is the general consensus when it comes to this Mediterranean-inspired, contemporary restaurant that is named for the act of “boiling.”
ROSEMARIE A quirky, stone-walled bohemian restaurant with a shaded patio serving the classic flavors of Montpellier.
EAT LIKE A LOCAL: Keep an eye out for these much-loved dishes when peering through any menu. ● Cassoulet. ● Les Cagarolettes. ● La Tielle Sétoise. ● La Brasucade de Moules. ● La Chichoumeille. ● Rouille de Seiche. ● Le Ragoût d’Escoubilles.

TRENDY BARS & BUSTLING CLUBS After you’ve had your fill of some of the finest dishes on the planet, you’ll probably want to wash it down with something equally mind-blowing. Fortunately, Montpellier watering spots are more than up to the task, and as you sit back and relax, watching the evening turn to night, you may even start to feel the pull of faraway music – the dancefloor is calling.
Visit the Shakespeare to sip on crisp beers surrounded by an attractive medieval setting, or take a gander to Espit Chupitos for more modern-chic experience with a wide range of drinks on offer.
THE PERFECT PLACE TO PRACTICE YOUR LANGUAGE SKILLS Think the French are rude? Think again. Enjoying 300-days of sun a year, Montpelliérains are quite the rays of sunshine themselves. Known for their friendliness and openness to outsiders, striking up a conversation with a local is never out of the question. “Bonjours” and “comment vas-tu?” are a regular occurrence. You’ll also hear some other phrases that’ll have you reaching for a French dictionary or checking up Google Translate.
Page 62 | LAUTHENTIC FRANCE
These smatterings of ‘the world’s most beautiful language’ are not only easy on the ear but also help immerse you deeper into the local culture. LA FRAISSINÈDE Welcome to La Fraissinède. Lovingly built from an old Corbières wine store with open spaces and tucked-away corners, this house is an exquisite place to enjoy time together or savor peace and quiet, all year round.
The house is set on 120 acres in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Languedoc. The surrounding area is real, unspoilt France and offers a wealth of activities, sparkling Mediterranean beaches, and the Pyrenees are close by. Bags down, pour a glass, relax – you’re here. This is a simple luxury in real France; do everything or nothing. Lofty but warm and welcoming, the house is beautifully designed with every detail considered. The layout makes communal living and privacy equally possible. There are six double bedrooms that comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests and a separate two-bedroom apartment. Outside, there are landscape gardens, a tennis court, and a pool. Our live-in couple help with everything from housekeeping to concierge. The living space in the main house runs the full length of the building, from the grandeur of the Salle des Fêtes and the intimacy of the bar to the open-plan, professional kitchen and the comfort of the fumoir cinema space. Hire the villa in autumn and winter and you’ll be as warm as toast: the house has three roaring open fires and under-floor heating. The kitchen has been designed for those who love to cook and should you wish, arrangements can easily be made for a chef. The ground floor and garden wing have direct access to the gardens, pool area, courtyard, and tennis court. The courtyard has an outside kitchen and an 18th-century fireplace. The garden wing is a less-formal sitting and acts as a games room or a luxurious, casual snug to get away from the crowd. In the main house, there are four bedrooms
on the first floor with beamed ceilings and en-suite marble bathrooms. Two have baths and all have walk-in showers. The bedrooms are situated around a dramatic atrium, from which the staircase sweeps to the main floor living space. The other two bedrooms are located in the garden wing. All bedrooms have satellite television and DVD players. There is a further two bedroomed flat off the courtyard that is suitable for extra guests or staff. One bedroom is a double, one has two singles. The flat also has a shower room and a kitchenette. From every window and terrace, La Fraissinède offers excellent views of the houses rural setting. The 15 meter swimming pool with an electric cover. There are also landscaped gardens and an all-weather tennis court. The sheltered courtyard garden, along with the variety of other terraces surrounding the house, provides plenty of options for outdoor living and dining. The only limit to the activities at la Fraissinède is your imagination. From sloth-like to super-charged, there’s a huge amount to do. There really are no excuses for boredom when in the South of France. Flop by the pool, enjoy a leisurely game of ping-pong in the cloistered shade of the courtyard, or get out there hiking, biking, or swimming in lakes and rivers. Beautiful beaches are within easy reach and there’s plenty more adventure to be found locally including white water rafting and in the winter; skiing and tobogganing.

The Conquesen-Rouergue is one of the most beautiful places in France, a place where heritage monuments exist side by side with nature’s bounties. HOW TO GET THERE Driving is the most direct way to get to Conques, and from Paris, your drive will take you 6 hours and 16 mins. Rodez has both a bus terminal as well as a train station. Nearby airports include the Rodez-Aveyron airport and the Blagnac-Toulouse airport.
In the 8th century, a monk by the name of Dadon came to live in Conques. Following him, a group of Benedictine monks settled in the area as well. Among them was a man named Ariviscus. He located and brought back a relic belonging to Saint Foy of Agen. This turn of events attracted pilgrims to Conques. The village already fell close to the route the pilgrims took during their visit to Santiago de Compostela. Saint Foy’s relic had a reputation for curing blindness. This attracted pilgrims and made Conques a popular stop-by on the way to Compostela.
HISTORY & CULTURE In roughly 500 AD, Charlemagne provided money to some hermits so that they could build an Abbey. Almost two centuries later, Louis the Pious added more funds for the Abbey when he asked to create a Benedictine Abbey.
