T

he Spring season continues its welcome return in the Milanese capital, giving the city innumerable opportunities to meet and share thanks to the rich program of dates and activities to exult spring. The Indro Montanelli Public Gardens, a few steps from Mandarin Oriental, Milan celebrate the floral world with the new edition of Orticola, while the notes of PianoCity transform the city into a magnificent melodious stage. But that is not all: the Milanese spotlights are ready to illuminate the world of Design, with the long-awaited return of Salone del Mobile and jamboree of connected events that busy the Fuorisalone calendar, with goings-on to galvanize and glamourise the city’s neighbourhoods and numerous zones, including the new Porta Venezia Design District. It is a unique opportunity to discover places usually closed to the public which, in the name of creativity, will open their doors to reveal workshops and courtyards, buildings and locations of unexpected beauty. BY CAR OR E-BIKE Now that the weather is nice, it’s a great time to hop on a bike to discover Milan inside and out – a different way to explore the city’s many different neighbourhoods. Mandarin Oriental, Milan, is able to offer its guests the use of two new electric bikes from the Milanese brand MAUA. The Powerframe e-bike model boasts advanced mechanics, innovative technology, and sustainability; it relies on a lithium-ion battery system - the LiFePO4 - that allows for it to be charged very quickly thanks to a special Maua Magsafe connector. It can be fully charged in just two hours. If you aren’t in the mood to pedal, you can also take to the streets aboard the Land Rover Range Rover Sport courtesy car offered by Mandarin Oriental, Milan; an electric model that gives it excellent range, perfect for reaching every part of Milan in just a few minutes, regardless of your destination, up to 4-5 km from the hotel. This is a service that can be reserved every day from 5pm to 11pm, and it includes a driver. Whatever your desired destination, your car or e-bike awaits!

FLAVOURS OF THE SEA Now that spring is here, there’s a holiday feel in the air at the Michelin-starred Seta restaurant. The new Pesce Azzurro menu conceived by Executive Chef Antonio Guida is like a culinary voyage to the sea, seemingly sweeping diners away from the city and taking them to the beach. Guida’s dishes rely on the best seasonal ingredients and look to tradition while also taking on international inspirations. Fish is truly the star of the show here, served alongside vegetables and meat. The ingredients celebrate the flavours of the sea – oysters, salicornia, seaweed, and caviar. Each course is a wonderful interplay of pairings and textures – often unexpected – taking it all to another level. Some of these dishes include roasted sardine jelly with kombu seaweed, squid, clams, and a green apple granita with caviar, or “bottoni” stuffed with cutlassfish, rosemary potatoes, red prawns, and a parsley sauce, all the way to bonito with nori seaweed, with sea snails, veal kidney, and salicornia. The meal ends with a wonderfully refreshing dessert – apple with chantilly cream, yuzu, and pain brioche ice cream.

And vice versa. These two industries are inextricably linked in Milan, but the importance of this relationship can truly be felt during Design Week, with the latest innovations at the International Furniture Fair, all the way to the related Fuorisalone events

here’s an enduring love affair between the worlds of fashion and design given that they share a common aim, with Milan as the home to so many forms of creativity. After all, this metropolis has always been a draw for people from all over the world who work in these fields – to launch new collections, to discover trends, to keep their fingers on the pulse of what is happening with fashion and design.

But when did fashion become such an important part of Milano Design Week? We spoke with Paolo Casati, creative director of the Fuorisalone, about it. “This relationship got even stronger in the last 7-8 years, though there’s always been a reciprocal interest, but it got even more intense when the big fashion brands, followed after by many other kinds of brands, got into the home decor space with dedicated products and lines. This has allowed them to be dedicated to the lifestyle sector from A to Z. This is an important step to increase the value of brands, and the Fuorisalone is the stage that best represents this phenomenon.” The fashion world certainly took advantage of this opportunity, seeing the Fuorisalone as the best place to find visibility and offer new experiences, “right at the time Milan became the undisputed capital of design, including not just the professionals – from buyers to the press – but design lovers and fashionistas as well, all the way to all of those people who want to be part of a public event that is democratic and inclusive. Design is still boundless territory for fashion, as well as for art,” continues Casati. A circuit of locations has been established, featuring amazing hybrid collaborations, innovative experiments, an exchange of expert information, and initiatives that truly

For all intents and purposes, could it be considered a “city of art” today? Absolutely! I have been living in Milan since 2013, and have been able to see how it changed since Expo 2015 [the World’s Fair]. It is a cosmopolitan city with a European flair, the capital of fashion and design. Milan is a city of art in its own right. In recent years, both the Milanese and the tourists have begun to “discover” it partly because, in addition to having the things cities traditionally have, there’s now a greater focus on the many cultural events that make it possible to go beyond, appreciating its artistic and cultural heritage. Milan tends to be more hidden and must be discovered. I still go around by bicycle to explore new neighbourhoods, secret gardens, extraordinary architecture.

What does it mean to you as a woman and cultural expert to be the head of a museum? What are the biggest challenges you face in your work? I have been fascinated by the world of art and culture from the time I was a little girl. I have always appreciated the extraordinary value of our country’s artistic heritage. I chose to embark upon this path in the museums, where I have been working for 20 years, to focus on putting these extraordinary places back at the centre of a shared cultural offering, inviting participation and inspiring young people to think critically. The main challenge is to make the museum a meeting place, a place of knowledge and communication, experimenting with new and creative ways of offering culture. Being a museum

director means having a variety of skills, a combination of in-depth knowledge of the history of collections as well as managing and creative skills. Keep in mind that museums are also businesses, with operating budgets and financial plans, that make a vital contribution to our country’s economy. Museums are able to offer everchanging perspectives on a community’s history and culture. Visitors should definitely see the collections of mechanical, solar, and pocket watches that make it the most important European institution in terms of artistic watch craftsmanship from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

What plans does the Poldi Pezzoli Museum have for this spring? Can you give us a preview of anything coming up? The museum will open up for city initiatives like Artweek, Orticola, and Pianocity, with events and activities. What’s more, to celebrate the fact that we reopened from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and to invite all Milanese population, city workers and tourists to take advantage of this new opening during the “lunch break” hours, the museum will have short half-hour guided tours dedicated to the masterpieces in the collection. Whether it’s a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city or a visit the Poldi Pezzoli for the first time, we hope that visitors will be enchanted by the beauty of the museum’s most representative works. Thus, every Monday from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m., will be an opportunity to discover a different piece and its exciting history. In addition, we have beautiful spaces that can be used for cultural discussions, professional brainstorming sessions, book presentations, and events to be combined with a special visit to the collection. The museum promotes workshops for families and all types of visitors. We are all about experimentation and inclusion so come and see us! In the fall, there will be a major exhibition on the history of the Ginori pieces.

If someone wanted to take a stroll in “your” Milan of art and culture, where would you suggest they go in this period of the year? First and foremost, I would recommend seeing the city by foot in and around the historic centre, exploring those ancient streets that have a contemporary spirit. Near the Duomo, in the “Cinque Vie” (“Five Streets”) area, there are quite a few galleries, ateliers, artists’ studios, antiques and design stores, some located inside extraordinary courtyards, that stand out for their originality and creativity.

What plans does the Poldi Pezzoli Museum have for this spring? Can you give us a preview of anything coming up? The museum will open up for city initiatives like Artweek, Orticola, and Pianocity, with events and activities. What’s more, to celebrate the fact that we reopened from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and to invite all Milanese population, city workers and tourists to take advantage of this new opening during the “lunch break” hours, the museum will have short half-hour guided tours dedicated to the masterpieces in the collection. Whether it’s a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city or a visit the Poldi Pezzoli for the first time, we hope that visitors will be enchanted by the beauty of the museum’s most representative works. Thus, every Monday from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m., will be an opportunity to discover a different piece and its exciting history. In addition, we have beautiful spaces that can be used for cultural discussions, professional brainstorming sessions, book presentations, and events to be combined with a special visit to the collection. I have worked for years in spas as a therapist, then as a manager and director. What I like about Mandarin Oriental, Milan, is its elegance and the Asian heritage. The wellness concept is really important to the brand, contributing significantly to the

By nature I look to study and then disrupt the status quo, and I like to think there are some old school traditions—perhaps around generational wealth—that I’m shaking up a little. The theme of the inauguration is rebirth, and the historic event, which has united the two cities through classical music since 1964, continues its biennial journey that began in 2022 with Novecento Suite to rediscover the music of the last century, casting off the misconceptions associated with it.
