T
he Spring season continues its welcome return in the Milanese capital, giving the city innumerable opportunities to meet and share thanks to the rich program of dates and activities to exult spring. The Indro Montanelli Public Gardens, a few steps from Mandarin Oriental, Milan celebrate the floral world with the new edition of Orticola, while the notes of PianoCity transform the city into a magnificent melodious stage. But that is not all: the Milanese spotlights are ready to illuminate the world of Design, with the long-awaited return of Salone del Mobile and jamboree of connected events that busy the Fuorisalone calendar, with goings-on to galvanize and glamourise the city’s neighbourhoods and numerous zones, including the new Porta Venezia Design District. It is a unique opportunity to discover places usually closed to the public which, in the name of creativity, will open their doors to reveal workshops and courtyards, buildings and locations of unexpected beauty. This ode to the Arts, with shows woven to museum and gallery exhibitions, has a kindred spirit beyond the city limits towards Bergamo Brescia Capital of Italian Culture 2023. The two cities link arms in an unmissable program of events and exhibitions which celebrate local institutions alongside Italian and international bighitters, in the name of creativity and experimentation. Another out-of-town experience heads to Como where, on the shores of Blevio, Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como welcomes you to a sanctuary of well-being to indulge in a regenerating escape from the urban frenzy, immersed in the unspoiled nature of the lake-scape. Back in Milan, Mandarin Garden waits with a toast based on Spring Punch, the new fresh-scented signature cocktail specifically created for the bloom season through the ingenuity of Director of Mandarin Garden, Guglielmo Miriello. Your stay at Mandarin Oriental, Milan is ready: whatever your idea of spring in Milan, the hospitality of this elegant marvel of the hotel industry knows how to satisfy. Over to you, our guests.

Mandarin Oriental, Milan
BY CAR OR E-BIKE Now that the weather is nice, it’s a great time to hop on a bike to discover Milan inside and out – a different way to explore the city’s many different neighbourhoods. Mandarin Oriental, Milan, is able to offer its guests the use of two new electric bikes from the Milanese brand MAUA. The Powerframe e-bike model boasts advanced mechanics, innovative technology, and sustainability; it relies on a lithium-ion battery system - the LiFePO4 - that allows for it to be charged very quickly thanks to a special Maua Magsafe connector. It can be fully charged in just two hours. If you aren’t in the mood to pedal, you can also take to the streets aboard the Land Rover Range Rover Sport courtesy car offered by Mandarin Oriental, Milan; an electric model that gives it excellent range, perfect for reaching every part of Milan in just a few minutes, regardless of your destination, up to 4-5 km from the hotel. This is a service that can be reserved every day from 5pm to 11pm, and it includes a driver. Whatever your desired destination, your car or e-bike awaits!
FLAVOURS OF THE SEA Now that spring is here, there’s a holiday feel in the air at the Michelin-starred Seta restaurant. The new Pesce Azzurro menu conceived by Executive Chef Antonio Guida is like a culinary voyage to the sea, seemingly sweeping diners away from the city and taking them to the beach. Guida’s dishes rely on the best seasonal ingredients and look to tradition while also taking on international inspirations. Fish is truly the star of the show here, served alongside vegetables and meat. The ingredients celebrate the flavours of the sea – oysters, salicornia, seaweed, and caviar. Each course is a wonderful interplay of pairings and textures – often unexpected – taking it all to another level. Some of these dishes include roasted sardine jelly with kombu seaweed, squid, clams, and a green apple granita with caviar, or “bottoni” stuffed with cutlassfish, rosemary potatoes, red prawns, and a parsley sauce, all the way to bonito with nori seaweed, with sea snails, veal kidney, and salicornia. The meal ends with a wonderfully refreshing dessert – apple with chantilly cream, yuzu, and pain brioche ice cream.

here’s an enduring love affair between the worlds of fashion and design given that they share a common aim, with Milan as the home to so many forms of creativity. After all, this metropolis has always been a draw for people from all over the world who work in these fields – to launch new collections, to discover trends, to keep their fingers on the pulse of what is happening with fashion and design.

Designers and architects travel a similar path, with one dressing people and the other “dressing” homes, transforming ideas, feelings, and vibrations into something real and tangible. Thus, it’s only natural that there would be some cross-pollination between the two industries. And this can truly be seen during Milano Design Week, which, this year, runs from 17 to 23 April, with the International Furniture Fair and

the events of the Fuorisalone taking place throughout the city’s neighbourhoods. There are also many installations outdoors in squares and courtyards, or in shop windows, showrooms, and art galleries, which can be seen for a few weeks even after the event. But when did fashion become such an important part of Milano Design Week? We spoke with Paolo Casati, creative director of the Fuorisalone, about it. “This relationship got even stronger in the last 7-8 years, though there’s always been a reciprocal interest, but it got even more intense when the big fashion brands, followed after by many other kinds of brands, got into the home decor space with dedicated products and lines. This has allowed them to be dedicated to the lifestyle sector from A to Z. This is an important step to increase the value of brands, and the Fuorisalone is the stage that best represents this phenomenon.” The fashion world certainly took advantage of this opportunity, seeing the Fuorisalone as the best place to find visibility and offer new experiences, “right at the time Milan became the undisputed capital of design, including not just the professionals – from buyers to the press – but design lovers and fashionistas as well, all the way to all of those people who want to be part of a public event that is democratic and inclusive. Design is still boundless territory for fashion, as well as for art,” continues Casati. A circuit of locations has been established, featuring amazing hybrid collaborations, innovative experiments, an exchange of expert information, and initiatives that truly
“think outside of the box.” This also has an impact on fine jewellery, high-end watches, technology, and cars. And food – being important to Milan and Italy as a whole – also plays a role. “The best meetings, and perhaps even the best deals, are made after 6 p.m., at aperitif time,” Paolo Casati jokes, though he’s being quite serious, pointing out that “many high-end beverage brands take advantage of this moment of creative conviviality by launching limited-edition products, setting up serving stations and temporary restaurants, or offering special menus for Milan Design Week, as Identità Golose does in its famous restaurant on Via

Romagnosi [editor’s note: this is very close to Mandarin Oriental, Milan].” This love story between fashion and design is ever evolving, with a future that looks particularly bright. And speaking of the future, the Fuorisalone is looking ahead with “Laboratorio Futuro,” a collective dialogue on how we imagine the years to come given the unique times we live in. We will certainly be well dressed and our homes well outfitted.

You have had an intense career in the world of fine arts that has taken you around Italy. What role does Milan play on the national art scene? For all intents and purposes, could it be considered a “city of art” today? Absolutely! I have been living in Milan since 2013, and have been able to see how it changed since Expo 2015 [the World’s Fair]. It is a cosmopolitan city with a European flair, the capital of fashion and design. Milan is a city of art in its own right. In recent years, both the Milanese and the tourists have begun to “discover” it partly because, in addition to having the things cities traditionally have, there’s now a greater focus on the many cultural events that make it possible to go beyond, appreciating its artistic and cultural heritage. Milan tends to be more hidden and must be discovered. I still go around by bicycle to explore new neighbourhoods, secret gardens, extraordinary architecture.

What does it mean to you as a woman and cultural expert to be the head of a museum? What are the biggest challenges you face in your work? I have been fascinated by the world of art and culture from the time I was a little girl. I have always appreciated the extraordinary value of our country’s artistic heritage. I chose to embark upon this path in the museums, where I have been working for 20 years, to focus on putting these extraordinary places back at the centre of a shared cultural offering, inviting participation and inspiring young people to think critically. The main challenge is to make the museum a meeting place, a place of knowledge and communication, experimenting with new and creative ways of offering culture. Being a museum

For each set, the museum preserves extraordinary masterpieces, considered among the most important in the world. This is why the Poldi Pezzoli “house museum” has always been a model for museums such as the Jacquemart-André in Paris, the Wallace Collection in London and the Frick Collection in New York City. Visitors should definitely see the collections of mechanical, solar, and pocket watches that make it the most important European institution in terms of artistic watch craftsmanship from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

What plans does the Poldi Pezzoli Museum have for this spring? Can you give us a preview of anything coming up? The museum will open up for city initiatives like Artweek, Orticola, and Pianocity, with events and activities. What’s more, to celebrate the fact that we reopened from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and to invite all Milanese population, city workers and tourists to take advantage of this new opening during the “lunch break” hours, the museum will have short half-hour guided tours dedicated to the masterpieces in the collection. Whether it’s a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city or a visit the Poldi Pezzoli for the first time, we hope that visitors will be enchanted by the beauty of the museum’s most representative works. Thus, every Monday from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m., will be an opportunity to discover a different piece and its exciting history. In addition, we have beautiful spaces that can be used for cultural discussions, professional brainstorming sessions, book presentations, and events to be combined with a special visit to the collection. The museum promotes workshops for families and all types of visitors. We are all about experimentation and inclusion so come and see us! In the fall, there will be a major exhibition on the history of the Ginori pieces.
If someone wanted to take a stroll in “your” Milan of art and culture, where would you suggest they go in this period of the year? First and foremost, I would recommend seeing the city by foot in and around the historic centre, exploring those ancient streets that have a contemporary spirit. Near the Duomo, in the “Cinque Vie” (“Five Streets”) area, there are quite a few galleries, ateliers, artists’ studios, antiques and design stores, some located inside extraordinary courtyards, that stand out for their originality and creativity.

WELLNESS A conversation with Gloria Cerboni, the new Spa Director of The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan BY LUDOVICA BRUN
W
ith a great deal of experience in the world of wellness, Gloria Cerboni is now heading up the refined The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan, as Spa Director. This is a place where traditions from the ancient Orient meet the latest technologies, with a selection of exclusive massages and treatments that will allow clients to feel more relaxed and centered. This is a true oasis of wellness in the centre of the city. How did you find yourself heading up The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan? I have worked for years in spas as a therapist, then as a manager and director. I’ve enjoyed seeing a variety of different scenarios: urban spa, country resort, city hotel, resort overlooking the sea. The experience I was missing was a big spa in the heart of Milan! What I like about Mandarin Oriental, Milan, is its elegance and the Asian heritage. The wellness concept is really important to the brand, contributing significantly to the
guest experience as well as the relationship with colleagues. How has the perception of wellness changed in the last few years in Milan? Wellness is increasingly a part of our lives, especially now after the pandemic, where we have a greater appreciation of our physical and psychological health and social connections. The World Health Organisation actually now includes social connections as part of modern concept of well-being. In Milan, specifically, the perception has shifted to trying to have all-around well-being of body and mind. At Mandarin Oriental, we promote both relaxation and movement for guests as well as employees, improving the psychophysical state and building strong and lasting relationships. In addition, everything we do has to do with being sustainable, for us and the environment.
“Wellness is increasingly a part of our lives, especially now after the pandemic, where we have a greater appreciation of our physical and psychological health...”. What does it mean to manage a space for the body and mind inside an iconic hotel on the Milanese and international scene? Being director of Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan is a great honour and a great responsibility. The level of quality required is justifiably very high, and this pushes us to offer increasingly more innovative experiences for our guests. What are the influences from the Orient that can be found in the treatments? Our “Oriental Heritage” is what sets us apart and influences all aspects of the guest experience. Our treatments – for face and body – include all of the senses, even bringing a sense of greater emotional balance. The Oriental philosophy truly respects and celebrates the person, from a physical as well as spiritual point of view. What do you think makes The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan, unique? Our Spa, and Mandarin Oriental Spas in general, are true sanctuaries where guests fully dedicate themselves to wellness. We are honoured to care for them in the most sincere way.
What spa treatment would you recommend for taking on the new season? The new journey dedicated to the senses and balancing body and mind, Detox and Adrenal Boost, which is available starting in May. This exclusive skincare ritual also focuses on a mental reset. It starts with exfoliation and a moisturizing body mask. Then there is a draining massage that helps eliminate toxins, improve circulation, and relieve muscular tension. Finally, there is a head massage and a foot ritual, leading to a state of deep relaxation. For those who prefer a more “medical beauty” approach, I suggest the Biologique Recherche line and the VIP O2 facial treatment, which is super intensive, oxygenating, and ideal for all skin types and at any time of year. It leads to greater radiance and protects the skin from pollution. Finally, to improve the silhouette and tone the body with an instant anti-aging effect, the new V-Shape machine allows for body contouring with different functions, such as vacuuming, radiofrequency, ultrasound technologies, and lymphatic drainage.
Milan is also a city of business travellers. What treatment would you recommend for those who only have limited time for wellness treatments at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan? For our corporate guests, we offer experiences tailored to their needs. Time, for them, is extremely precious, which is why the Digital Wellness Escape is a great treatment for those who spend a lot of time at their computers or using a smartphone, impacting the posture of the upper body. The head massage is extremely beneficial because it helps relax the often overactive mind. Intelligent Movement, on the other hand, is greatly recommended for those who want to eliminate muscle tension in the shoulders, back, and neck. Thanks to the use of the Theragun, the decontracting massage is also more effective over time.

Thanks to the use of the Theragun, the decontracting massage is also more effective over time.

amed Creative Director of Bally at the beginning of 2022, Rhuigi Villaseñor tells a story with the pieces he creates for the Swiss brand, boasting a visionary spirit and contemporary style that takes inspiration from his international background. Born in the Philippines, he later moved to the United States, where he began his career in Los Angeles. Rhuigi is a man of the world whose cosmopolitan spirit translates into impeccable taste, a perfect combination of craftsmanship, heritage, and a focus on the contemporary. Rhuigi entrepreneur, creative director, world traveler, a man of great taste. How has experiencing different places and culture inspired your creativity and affected your perception of luxury? It’s vital. To cultivate your own perspective, you have to live it. I can look up any place in the world and see the most beautiful pictures of it in seconds, but that’s not my
view, it’s someone else’s. As an American getting to grips with the European art of living well, experiencing it first hand has been essential to my work as the creative director of Bally, especially as I look to showcase the pure luxury that the House represents. You are an American of Asian Origin, creative director of a Swiss Brand showing in Milan, Italy. Are you a living example that we have moved beyond nations or do these labels still carry importance in your opinion? I’m proof that you have the power to create the identity you desire, honor your origins and create the life that you want for yourself. The world is too big to limit yourself to knowing a tiny part of it. How would you describe your latest Bally collection? It’s all about luxury, confidence and global mobility. SS23 is about using the finest
materials, archival design references and spinning it with a modern sensibility. Since working with Bally, you have been visiting Milan more and more often. What do you love about this city and what do you think can be improved? I love Milan. The history, the elegance, the culture of refinement. By nature I look to study and then disrupt the status quo, and I like to think there are some old school traditions—perhaps around generational wealth—that I’m shaking up a little. From your social media profile one can gather you are a man of sophisticated taste. On what do you like to spend your time and money experiences or things or both? Both, each offers an experience and is a thing.

he scents of spring can also be savoured in the wonderful creations served up at Mandarin Garden, where the exciting drink list created by Director of Mandarin Garden, Guglielmo Miriello, and his team of expert mixologists now includes a series of creations for the season. The Spring Punch – a delicate reinterpretation of the famous Russian Spring Punch cocktail – is a blend made with Tanqueray Ten Gin, pink grapefruit and basil shrub, pomelo and pink pepper tonic water, fragrant ingredients that bring a lively twist and a sparkling note of freshness to the drink. It aims to pay homage to the abundance of flowers and fruit that represent spring. This rose-tinged cocktail is served in elegant porcelain, as part of the special Swarovski x Rosenthal collaboration, from the Signum collection; each element of the set comes in a pastel shade and has references to historic graphic elements from the brands, such as the timeless octagon, which brings to mind the facets of crystal, and decorations that seem like precious gold embroidery. This delectable punch is a great excuse to get together in the garden with friends, enjoying drinks and a wonderful selection of sweet and savoury delights as part of the food pairing.

CULTURAL CAPITAL BY COSTANZA ROMAGNOLI
The goal of Bergamo and Brescia as Capital of Culture 2023 is to bring change to the region through culture. Preserved promised lands, the two cities tell their stories through what aims to be a conscious beginning of a widespread social, industrial, and urban project. ergamo and Brescia were nominated in July 2020 for Italian Capitals of Culture 2023 as a result of the Italian Government’s response to the two cities’ proposal to be – once again united to “Grow Together” – during the tense period of the pandemic. Following that terrible chapter, culture has emerged as a tool for prevention and socialisation, capable of influencing people’s well-being through systems of inclusion and augering in the construction of community relationships. The recognition of the history of the two cities, their artistic and cultural heritage, and their ability to regenerate and relaunch themselves into a present focused on building relationships, solidarity and innovation are central. Bergamo and Brescia Italian Capital of Culture 2023 will be a platform for events and initiatives and
a honey pot for visitors, while putting the two cities on the map of European culture. Indeed, it is the first major cultural policy experiment on a national scale, aimed at supporting the growth of a territory through its economic, industrial, and social development. It is a project that looks beyond 2023, aiming to build the conditions for a new future for the local communities and Italy. The two cities stand together on the underlying shared vision of the Illuminated City: culture is an inclusive and empowering tool to relaunch and regenerate communities. Widening the scope of what is possible gives the chance to develop initiatives capable of generating new ways of thinking.

INTERVIEW
What does it mean to you to have reached this important objective?
Laura Castelletti, Deputy Mayor of Brescia: “For me it means offering a broad look at what it means to put culture at the centre of administrative policies, making significant investments in new projects as well as being producers of cultural events. It is a journey that began ten years ago and which now gives us this chance to share it with the thousands of wonderful organisations that make up Brescia. Over the last two years, we have believed and had it confirmed to us that creating and supporting a network is the key to ensuring a future with a clear direction towards well-being, growth, and social inclusion. We were fortunate that we could share a work strategy with our colleagues in Bergamo which has yielded excellent results.”

“For the city of Bergamo, I think that this event begins both a process of undertaking cultural initiatives and projects, as well as an opportunity to physically influence the urban fabric and region through culture, sustainability and beauty as fundamental elements in a commitment to large economic investments by the Administration. This will make it possible to complete or begin many significant areas of work, ranging from urban regeneration to the development of a vitally important historical and cultural heritage. The Capital of Culture 2023 is a touchpaper for our city, a spark that gives life and energy to an important process of change and development that will go on beyond 2023. Everything is in partnership with Brescia looking toward our common growth that can generate medium and long-term benefits for this part of Lombardy which is so well connected to the rest of the country and Europe.”
