PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH

Aug30,2015

From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath Talking to the children and young people, Pope Francis reminds us that our Christian life is a constant dialogue with the Father, with the Son , and with the Holy Spirit. On a more personal level, Jesus saved us, He walks with us leading us on our journey and nourishes us and gives us strength with His Body through Holy Communion. Jesus remains in our hearts always. Children should be trained to dialogue with Jesus when they are very little so that the friendship with Jesus becomes spontaneous and very endearing all their lives. In the language of the Pope, we have to help children to, “put on faith” and “put on love”. Pope continues that if you “put on Christ” you will see wings of hope spreading and letting your journey with joy towards the future, and your life will be full of his love, and will be a fruitful that is life-giving for others.”(p.117). This will make their lives very dynamic and positive. Put on Christ is a real thing. Christ awaits you in his words. If you listen to Him His presence will arouse your heart. At the sacrament of penance, his mercy will cure the wounds caused by your sins. Christ is waiting for you in the Eucharist, the sacrament of His presence and his sacrifice of love. You will learn from him the language of love, goodness and service. We are members of the large family of faith. The fraternal communion and the habit of solidarity and sharing will counter the world’s focus on selfishness, Pope urges the young people to listen to the Lord speaking in their hearts, and “do not be afraid” but be generous to bear witness to his Gospel. Young ones have to become prophets in the world to break down evil and violence, over throw barriers of selfishness, intolerance, and hatred so as to build a new world (p.125). Jesus is counting on the youth so does the church. Blessed Mary Mother will accompany them and support them. We are all called to holiness through different vocations of life. There are ideologies in the world against Christian values. Tho se who talk against the Traditional Christian Marriage insist on “enjoying” the moment. They do not believe in a lasting commitment because they do not know what tomorrow will bring. As people of faith, we have to be revolutionaries against the culture that sees everything as temporary. To be fruitful disciples we have to practice the three languages of the Gospel: the language of the heart, the language of the mind, and the language of the hands. Applying the cognitive behavioral approach of thinking, feeling and action makes our faith life bound. Pope invites the youth to rebel against the modern tendency to reduce love to sexual aspect alone which deprives it of the essential characteristics of beauty, communion, fidelity, responsibility etc. Reminding of the Emmaus experience of the Disciples ( Lk.24:13-35) the youth are invited to prayerfully read the Bible and let the voice of the Lord burn their hearts. it will open your eyes to recognize His presence with you and discover the loving plan he has for your life. God Bless you all

Last week’s discussion of the permanent diaconate and its restoration will lead inevitably to questions about “deaconesses,” something certainly under study as historians and liturgists research our tradition’s treasures. Today, there are some settings in which women are entrusted with pastoral administration and have been called to preach and to officiate at weddings. Lay people can lead the funeral rites and daily prayer. Yet the question of ordination to the diaconate for women is complex. Yes, we have had deaconesses in our tradition. We know that they assisted with the baptism of women, and that ministries were entrusted to them. We also know that some early church councils took care to call them lay persons, and specifically forbade ordination. What confuses the picture is that they may have been the wives of deacons, who, like the wives of priests and bishops, were expected to serve the community as exemplars of the Christian life. Long after deaconesses disappeared, their ministry was treasured and carried on by religious women in consecrated life. It is clear that one of our greatest treasures is the vibrant engagement of women in ministry over the centuries. What is not as clear is where our questions will lead. —Rev.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
