December 6,2015

From the Desk of Fr. Philip Kollithanath When we follow the Traditional Catholic Spiritual path we are cautioned against our instinctual tendency for unbridled affections. We all know that intellect and affect have to be prudently balanced and managed such a way that addictions and inordinate attachments will not be allowed to disturb any normal functioning of our faculties. As we say always, virtue stands in the middle. Either extreme is abnormal. Mature people will know where to strike the balance. The psychological process is very simple. Strong desire for something will disturb the mind and the person becomes ill at ease. Pride and greed will turn a person restless. A person of humble heart will enjoy peace. An unmortified man is easily tempted, has a weak spirit, and is very inclined to sensual things. It is very difficult for him to abstain from earthly desires. Such deprivations will drive him sad. Once his impulses are satisfied, remorse is generated and his conscience is overwhelmed with guilt or shame for following his passions that did not lead him to the peace he thought he would reach. True peace will be found in resisting passions and temptations, not in satisfying them. It is difficult to enjoy peace for a carnal person and for a person given to vain attractions. This is why in Catholic Tradition Spiritual discipline and devotions are important for everyone. A fervent and spiritual person enjoys real peace,. This thought is very real in the family life and in the religious and priestly life styles. When people do not have the discipline of passions, they cave in to the numerous immoral and destructive opportunities around them. This can be sexual infidelity, pornography, or a strong desire for substance abuse. Married people and celibates are victimized by over exposure to sensual digressions. In this instant gratification age many a marriage is broken due to inordinate attachments developed outside the marital context. When they recognize the mistake, it is too late to withdraw and damage is already inflicted. Regular spiritual exercises, family prayer and personal prayers on a regular basis, meditations and prayerful reflections on current life and on eternal salvation are easy ways to bring a certain discipline to our lives. A frequent examination of Conscience will assist us to recognize our passions and inclinations that are detrimental to our state of life and our final salvation. If we participate in daily Holy Mass which begins with such a brief overview of our life and acknowledging our failures before the Lord will give us the grace we need to resist temptations and cleanse our lives and keep on the right path. Advent is a time for such a special focus on our holiness. May God bless you all.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, trees are beginning to appear in living rooms throughout the parish. To a complete outsider to our culture, it must seem an odd thing indeed. The “roots” of this custom are in liturgical drama: religious plays performed in the churches and town squares of medieval Europe. The favorite theme for this time of year was the “Paradise Play,” a dramatic history of the human race from the Garden of Eden to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The language and music varied from place to place, but one feature was always in place: a great tree decorated with apples. As a prop, it provided lots of material for the actors: the temptation, shelter for the manger, and a reminder of the wood of the cross. Soon people began to bring “paradise trees” into their homes, decorating them with gifts and lighted candles. Many Germans give credit to Martin Luther for transforming the “Paradise Tree” into the evergreen Christmas tree. Walking home on a starry Advent night, he was so awed by the beauty of the night that he hauled a pine tree inside and decorated it with lighted candles. Americans were holdouts. It took until 1856 for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to decriminalize Christmas decorations, the old Puritan dislikes falling before the waves of Irish and German immigrants with traditions firmly in hand!—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Advent The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event.Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. This does not mean that Advent is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor. The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbolizes the penitential spirit. Religious traditions associated with Advent express all these themes. The Advent Wreath represents the long time when people lived in spiritual darkness, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the Light of the world. Each year in Advent people wait once again in darkness for the coming of the Lord, His historical coming in the mystery of Bethlehem, His final coming at the end of time, and His special coming in every moment of grace.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
