NO ORDINARY TIME

NINGÚN TIEMPO ORDINARIO

Today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord brings an end to the Christmas Season and a beginning of the Ordinary Time of the year. When we use the term “Ordinary” to describe this time, we refer to the fact that its weeks are named according to the “ordinal” numbers – first, second, third, etc. – rather than in reference to a particular liturgical season such as Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter. The many observances of the month of January remind us that this time of year is anything but ordinary (in the usual sense of the word!). Last week we observed National Migration Week; next weekend we will celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. After that our focus turns to the events surrounding the March for Life and following that, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Not only does the pace of life apparently take no break in January, but the many good causes that attract our attention during these days remind us that this is no “ordinary” time of the year!

La festividad de hoy del Bautismo del Señor nos trae el final del tiempo de Navidad y el inicio del Tiempo Ordinario del año. Cuando usamos el término “Ordinario” para describir a este tiempo, nos referimos al hecho de que sus semanas son nombradas según los números “ordinales” – primero, segundo, tercero, etc. – en vez de referirse a una estación litúrgica en particular como Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma o Pascua. Las muchas observancias del mes de enero nos recuerdan que este tiempo del año es cualquier cosa menos ordinario (¡en el sentido común de la palabra!) La semana pasada observamos la Semana Nacional de Migración; el próximo fin de semana celebraremos el feriado de Martin Luther King, Jr. Luego, ya nuestro enfoque se dirige a los eventos a la Marcha por la Vida y seguidamente, a la Semana de Oración por la Unidad Cristiana. No solamente el ritmo de vida aparentemente no toma un receso en enero, sino que las muchas buenas causas que llaman nuestra atención durante esos días nos recuerdan que este tiempo del año ¡no es ningún tiempo ordinario!

This month Bishop Loverde will send a mailing regarding the 2015 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2015 BLA is Stewards of Christ Sharing Gospel Joy! After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serve the people in our diocese. When we join together as one Body in Christ, we can do so much for so many!
