EL HOMBRE ARAÑA

1

EE.UU., 2002 | Clasificación: B | Director: Sam Raimi | Actores: Tobey Maguire, Willem Defoe, Kirsten Dunst

Sinopsis

EL SEÑOR DE LOS ANILLOS 2: LAS DOS TORRES EE.UU., Nueva Zelandia 2002 | Clasificación: B | Director: Peter Jackson | Actores: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett

Sinopsis

¡Ojo! ¡La película es muy larga! Compre dulces y refrescos antes de sentarse.

To aid reading comprehension, make a transparency of the Lectura. As you read, ask students to note terms used by the critic to express opinions. Underline positive ones in blue and negative ones in red. Leave the transparency up for students’ reference as they answer the questions.

Bodily / Kinesthetic: Have students prepare a skit in which one of them is the movie critic and the other is the director. The critic should comment on the film and ask the director for details. The director can comment on the review and answer questions. Students may choose one of the movies above, or base their skit on another movie.

EL ATAQUE DE LOS CLONES EE.UU., 2002 | Clasificación: B | Director: George Lucas | Actores: Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman

Sinopsis

Resources: Heritage Language Learner Workbook: 6B–7 Focus: Reading about and discussing preferences regarding foreign films Suggestions: Ask students to list any foreign films that they may have seen. What language were the movies in? Did students understand what the characters were saying? If not, how were they able to understand the meaning of the movie? Read the passage to students, pausing after each paragraph to check for comprehension. Ask students how many of them have seen films with subtitles or dubbing. If they have not, bring in an example of each. Show students a segment and ask: Which method did they prefer? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Have students list their responses before discussing the ¡Compruébalo! with a partner. To help students answer the ¿Qué te parece? questions, list five movies and have students give examples of how they reflect aspects of U.S. culture. Answers will vary.

1language 2dubbing

Have students report on foreign films playing in your community or in nearby cities. Ask them to contact theaters or look in the newspaper. Have them present each film that is playing by giving a summary of its plot, saying who is in it, and telling what country it is from. Also, have students say whether the film will be shown with subtitles or dubbing.

Visual / Spatial: Have artistic students draw a storyboard of a scene from a well-known film. Then have them label each section with subtitles of the dialogue. Ask students to present their storyboards. Have other students in the class guess what movie is being depicted.

Presentación escrita

Presentation Standards: 1.3, 3.1

Task Your class is having a contest to produce exciting or humorous new movie ideas. For this contest you will need to produce a brief description of the plot and the main characters. You also will need to plan the details of one scene to provide a preview of your movie.

Resources: Heritage Language Learner

Outlining your ideas Many filmwriters do extensive outlining of key ideas before they begin to write. They focus on “big picture” vision: type of movie, plot, and description of the characters. This skill will be helpful as you write your contest entry.

1 Prewrite Use the chart below to help you focus on “the big picture.” Think about the type of movie you want to write: a mystery, a comedy, science fiction, or a romance. What is the plot? Who are the main characters? Which scene would provide a good feel for your movie?

Workbook: 6B–8

Escena Estrategia Drawing a scene

2 Draft Use the notes from your chart to write a short synopsis of the movie. Then write a script for the scene you’ve chosen. Include the dialog and directions to the actors. You might want to use the storyboard method to show how the scene progresses.

A common tool in movie writing is to draw the scene. This is called storyboarding. You might sketch the scene you will be writing about.

3 Revise Read through your synopsis and scene and check for spelling, agreement, correct verb usage, and vocabulary. Share your review with a partner, who will check for errors and to see that the synopsis is complete, the story is presented in a logical order, and the scene is easy to understand. 4 Publish Rewrite your summary and scene, making any necessary changes or corrections. Give a copy to your teacher or put one in your portfolio. The class can select the winner of the contest from all entries.

Focus: Writing a synopsis of a movie script Suggestions: Point out that the task asks for a brief description of the plot and main characters. Suggest that students also consider which of these elements will be the driving force for the type of movie they choose to write about. For example, mystery movies center around the plot, whereas romantic movies tend to focus more on the characters. Encourage students to focus on meaningful details according to the type of movie they choose as they develop their descriptions. As students are drafting, remind them to not reveal too much about the movie. The readers should be interested, so that they will still want to see more. The second Estrategia talks about drawing out a scene, or storyboarding. Students may want to expand on this by using photographs, props, or other visuals to enhance their written work.

Portfolio Have students include a copy of their storyboard and synopsis in their portfolio.

5 Evaluation Your teacher may give you a rubric for how the contest entry will be graded. You will probably be graded on: • completeness of information in the synopsis • clarity and logical presentation of ideas in the synopsis • appropriateness of short scene to present the plot

Enriching Your Teaching Culture Note Though mariachi is very popular and internationally recognized as symbolizing Mexican music, it is one of a number of musical forms found in Mexico. Among many others, in the northern states there is the rambunctious

música norteña; in the Southeast mountain area is the música huasteca with its country feel; in the Southeast coastal area is the música de trio, soft and melodic.
