October 26: Early Release: 12:26 pm October 28: Picture Day October 31: Halloween School Parade: An American Tradition Students bring costumes to wear over their clothes for the parade and class celebration. Please ensure your child’s costume is suitable for the temperature this day. The Halloween Party will be from 9:20 am to 10:20 am.

FIRST GRADE STUDIES THIS MONTH ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS We completed the PALS on September 30. The results will be shared at conferences, including a printout for you to keep for your records on your child. Reading: With reading groups officially starting, students will learn to think through predictions and make personal connections to fiction and nonfiction stories. Writer’s Workshop: The first unit is called “Small Moments” in which students learn to write a narrative about something true that happened to them or something that they did. Students will learn specific skills required of real-life authors: generating ideas, planning, writing, reading one’s writing, revising, and publishing. Students will learn to structure their stories (beginning, middle, and end) and to develop their ideas with detailed sentences about their topic (small moment). Students will be taught how to use uppercase letters appropriately, to leave adequate spaces between words, to use punctuation, and to use the “Word Wall”.

Sight Words On Our Word Wall: the, and, a, I, to, said, you, he, it, in, was, she, for, that, is, he, but, they, my, of, his, on, me, all, be, go, can. (Eeds List #1) We encourage students to learn these words by sight and to use them on our Word Wall tool at school. Strategies on how to get “picture of the word” in one’s mind and write it quickly will be taught. HEALTH It is allergy and cold season! We continue to work on keeping healthy by coughing in our sleeve, washing hands regularly, and using tissues. SOCIAL STUDIES We will apply our newly gained knowledge about good citizenship this month. Toward the end of the first quarter (into November), we will introduce timelines. Please begin to collect a pictures that your child could use to illustrate a timeline of his/her life. More information will arrive by early November. All pictures will be returned to families! J SCIENCE Big Idea: Engineers use a process to design and build something new. They use many different kinds of materials. Essential questions: • How do engineers work? • What materials make up objects? • How can materials be sorted? Vocabulary: engineer, design process, material, human-made, natural

MATH Students are reviewing and building on their knowledge of embedded numbers. Exploring the different combinations of a number allow children to provide a solid foundation for understanding addition and subtraction operations and equations. Vocabulary: repeating pattern, triangle, rectangle, square, circle, pentagon, hexagon, rhombus, trapezoid, quadrilateral, sides, vertices (corners), total, addition, plus sign, equal sign, equation, number combinations/partners SPANISH LANGUAGE ARTS Students will continue learning all about each other. In our unit “Mi Escuela, mis Amigos y Yo,” students share and write about favorite activities and things they enjoy doing at home and at school. We will also learn about respect, responsibility, and cooperation as we build class community. Vocabulary: escuela, respeto, responsabilidad, cooperación, leer, pintar/colorear, trazar, escribir, anotar, observar, Phrases: Me llamo ____________. Tengo ______________. Me gusta _____________. Octubre 21: Día para sacar Fotografías a los estudiantes. Octubre 26 : Salida temprana, 12:26 pm Octubre 28: Dia de Fotografiar a los niños. Octubre 30: Halloween, “Una tradición Americana” –Desfile de disfraces. Los estudiantes traen sus disfraces para cambiarse en la escuela Asegúrese que su niño vista ropa apropiada para la temperatura. Celebración en la clase de 9:20 a 10:20 am.

Lo que está Estudiando el Primer Grado LENGUA INGLESA Lectura: Hemos concluido las evaluaciones PALS. Se le informará sobre los resultados en las reuniones de padres y maestros. Le proporcionaremos una copia para sus records. Lectura: Los estudiantes están aprendiendo a hacer predicciones y conexiones personales con cuentos de ficción y no ficción leídos en voz alta. Taller de Escritura: Estamos iniciando la primera lección de escritura llamada” Pequeños Momentos”.

Los estudiantes aprenderán a escribir textos narrativos sobre una experiencia personal o sobre algo que hicieron. Los estudiantes aprenderán destrezas especifícas que usan los autores en el mundo real como ser: generar ideas, planear escribir, releer su propias escrituras, editar y publicar. Los estudiantes también aprenderán a organizar y estructurar sus escrituras usando el principio, el medio y el final de su narración. Asimismo, podrán desarrollar sus ideas usando detalles sobre el tema o pequeña experiencia. Los estudiantes aprenderán el uso de las letras mayúsculas, también los alentaremos a como dejar espacios entre palabras, cómo usar puntuación, y el uso del Mural de Palabras dentro de la clase. Palabras de Uso Frecuente: a, and, come, do, down, for, go, good, he, here, I, like, look, me, my, one, see, she, the, this, to, two, up, you, want, we, what, where. Le recomendamos que los estudiantes escriban estas palabras en casa, y que los padres hagan tarjetas para aprender a reconocer las palabras a simple vista. SALUD ¡Es la temporada de alergias y resfriados! Estamos enseñándoles a los niños a toser cubriéndose la boca con el brazo y no con las manos; como también lavarse las manos con frecuencia y usar Kleenex. ESTUDIOS SOCIALES Continuaremos con nuestro estudio de cívica y con el tema de la buena ciudadanía. Empezaremos a estudiar la línea cronológica y la geografía. Por favor empieze a recolectar fotografías de su niño que pudiera usar en esta línea cronológica de su vida. Le enviaremos mas información al principio del mes de Noviembre. Las fotografías serán devueltas a la familia despues de que los niños las usen en sus proyectos. CIENCIAS La gran idea :Los ingenieros utilizan un proceso para diseñar y construir algo nuevo. Usan distintos tipos de materiales. Preguntas esenciales • ¿Cómo trabajan los ingenieros? • ¿De qué materiales están compuestos los objetos? • ¿Cómo se pueden clasificar los materiales? MATEMATICAS Los estudiantes están repasando y reforzando sus conocimientos sobre las combinaciones numéricas. La exploración de distintas combinaciones de un número, facilita a que el estudiante tenga una base sólida en su entendimiento de la suma y resta. Vocabulario: patrón que repite (secuencia), triángulo, rectángulo, cuadrado, círculo, pentágono, hexágono, rombo, trapecio, cuadrilátero, lados, vértices (esquinas), total, suma, signo de más, signo de igualdad, ecuación, combinaciones de números/partes LENGUA ESPAÑOLA Los estudiantes continuarán aprendiendo sobre cada miembro de la clase. En nuestra unidad, “Mi Escuela, mis Amigos y Yo,” ellos cuentan y escriben sobre sus actividades favoritas y sobre las cosas que les gusta hacer en casa y en la escuela.
