In 2022, total of 16 lunar missions took place which is wayward highest in the history of space science in the passing 22 years. The month of December 2022 can be marked as essential in the history of lunar missions. NASA’s Artemis-I Orion capsule set a new flight record on 1st December 2022. UAE successfully launched the first-ever Arab-Built lunar spacecraft on 12th December 2022. Japan’s first-ever lunar mission was launched on 13th December 2022 What is meant by a lunar mission? A lunar mission is the detail of robotic and manned spacecraft missions sent to the Moon to explore its surface and of a spacecraft on the surface of the moon. This includes both manned and robotic missions. Purpose of Lunar Missions The Luna missions are designed to collect information about the Moon and its surroundings, not only for scientific purposes but also for planning future lunar missions, including manned missions to the Moon. The series included flyby, lunar orbit, and soft landing missions. The Luna program has had many ups and downs, and while it never made it to a manned mission to the Moon, it did achieve many "firsts." These included the first lunar flyby, the first lunar impact, the first rear image, the first soft landing, the first lunar satellite, the first lunar soil analysis, the first sample return, and the first lunar rover deployment. will be These missions also involved remote sensing and photography of the Moon, operating two of his rovers on the Moon, and retrieving three sets of lunar samples. History of Lunar Missions On September 14, 1959, Luna 2, a Soviet-launched space probe, made contact with the Moon's surface, marking the start of physical Moon research. The only method of exploration that existed before that was the observation from Earth. The initial improvement alking to the MOON HORIZON - December 2022

in the caliber of lunar observations was made possible by the development of the optical telescope. The mountains and craters on the surface of the moon were among Galileo Galilei's first observations made with his homemade telescope, which he built in 1609. Galileo Galilei is generally recognized as the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes. Only NASA's Apollo program, which it accomplished six times, was able to successfully land people on the moon. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong of Apollo 11 made the first landing in 1969, laying down scientific equipment and bringing samples back to Earth from the moon. Early in 2019, the Chinese spacecraft Chang'e 4 performed the first unmanned landing on the far side of the Moon, successfully deploying the Yutu-2 lunar rover. Apollo 11 While discussing lunar missions, the Apollo 11 mission must have to come into the discussion which was a giant leap for mankind. Some interesting facts about this mission are: Because of the risk involved with spaceflight, the three astronauts devised a clever way to provide for their families in case they didn’t return —autographs. The astronauts signed hundreds of envelopes to be later postmarked and distributed to their families. “If they did not return from the moon, their families could sell them — to not just fund their day-to-day lives, but also fund their kids’ college education and other life needs,” space historian Robert Pearlman told NPR. The surface of moon turned out to be solid, but the real surprise was that the moon had a smell. Moon soil is extremely clingy and hard to brush off, so when Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the lunar module and re-pressurized it, lunar dirt that had clung to the men’s suits entered the cabin and began to emit an odor. The astronauts reported that it had a burned smell like wet fireplace ashes, or like the air after a fireworks show. According to The Associated Press, a fragment of wood and a piece of muslin fabric from the 1903 Wright Flyer flew to the moon with Apollo 11′s Neil Armstrong in 1969. The fabric and wood are displayed at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Following their arrival from the moon on July 27, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were forced to quarantine for over two weeks in case they returned with any dangerous lunar microorganisms. HORIZON - December 2022

Artemis-I and NASA's Future plans The primary goal of Artemis I is to thoroughly test the integrated systems before crewed missions by operating the spacecraft in a deep space environment, testing Orion's heat shield, and recovering the crew module after reentry, descent, and splashdown. There's a lot more to be done before astronauts step on the moon again. The follow-on Artemis flight, will send four astronauts around the moon and back, perhaps as early as 2024. A landing could follow in 2025. NASA is targeting the moon's unexplored south pole, where permanently shadowed craters are believed to hold ice that could be used by future crews. "It's a future where NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the moon," Bill Nelson, the NASA administrator, said during a news conference this month. Lunar missions have always been popular among people of all countries. People have their own kind of emotions related to the moon. Nowadays many are buying land on the moon. Even if it is real, whether it is worth it or not is a big question as human beings cannot reside on another minor planet/planet for a long time. But it is not impossible as the concept of humans becoming an interplanetary species is bit-by-bit in progress. That is what optimists and selenophiles can hope for.
