PAW PRINTS SPRING 2022

A Lifesaving Program In the spring of 2018, Kari Chiocchi, HOV’s Medical Coordinator, was awarded an apprenticeship through a grant from Maddie’s Fund. The apprenticeship included lecture and hands-on training on diagnosing, treating, and managing ringworm in an animal shelter. So what is ringworm, and why is it such a big deal? Ringworm is the name of a fungal infection of the superficial layers of the skin, hair, and nails. Ringworm infections can occur in humans and all domesticated animals. The common name of ringworm is somewhat misleading because it is not caused by a worm, and the infected areas are not always ring-shaped. Ringworm is contagious and may be passed by direct contact with an infected animal or person, handling contaminated objects, or touching contaminated surfaces. “Treatment for ringworm cats and dogs can be extensive, and we have to work hard to keep them not only physically healthy but emotionally happy as well. It takes a team! We have specially trained volunteers who spend time with the cats and dogs and special treats

like – kitty tv, forts, fun boxes, scratchers and toys. The average length of treatment is 4-6 weeks, but for kittens like ‘Vine’ and ‘Pumpkin Seed,’ it took three months because their infection was so severe,” says Chiocchi. Without the proper isolation space, and medical expertise, many shelters cannot accommodate these sick cats and dogs. Unfortunately, this means that animal shelters often have to euthanize animals that have been infected with ringworm. Since the start of our ringworm treatment program, HOV has successfully treated 100 animals! Most are kittens, but we have also treated dogs, puppies, and adult cats. Besides treating the animals that come to HOV, one of our goals is to help other shelters in Montana create ringworm treatment programs of their own. We share our knowledge and resources and even transfer animals to HOV to be treated here. We are proud of the difference we’ve made in the lives of these animals and the relationships with other shelters in Montana.

A Note From The Executive Director As the animal welfare industry evolves, Heart of the Valley remains committed to exploring best practices in sheltering and shelter medicine. In recognition of our work, HOV was invited to participate in the ASPCA Behavior Learning Lab to strengthen our behavior assessment and enrichment program. This program is part of the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC), the first and only facility dedicated to providing behavioral rehabilitation for severely fearful, unadoptable dogs, such as those confiscated from puppy mills and hoarding situations. One of the BRC’s goals is to help partner organizations save more lives. Their Learning Lab program enables their experts to share the lessons learned about improving behaviorally challenged dogs’ quality of life and preparing them for adoption. As part of our work with the Lab, HOV developed an overall focus which is to “create a process for care staff and volunteers to consistently get to know individual animals and communicate their needs so behavior/enrichment happen sooner and improve adoption/placement decisions.” Our core team and task groups have been hard at work on the development of standard operating procedures and job aides, defined enrichment activities and a comprehensive communication system to ensure that enrichment is integrated into the daily lives of every dog and cat at the shelter. We are excited to beginning training our staff and volunteers as this program evolves! Our goal is to ensure that every pet in the shelter, no matter their length of stay, has as healthy and happy experience as possible.

Enhancing the Human/Animal Bond Each year, HOV’s Pet Pals Summer Day Camp educates campers on the importance of compassionate animal care through time with our shelter dogs and cats, humane education lessons, games, crafts, and amazing local guest speakers. For the first time, HOV is pleased to announce that we will be offering a 7th week of Pet Pals this summer! Camp will begin on June 20th and run through August 5th. Each week, campers will participate in engaging lesson plans, including responsible pet ownership, dog and cat body language, being kind to pets, and categorizing animals, to name a few. By the end of each week, campers are qualified Junior Volunteers! Each day campers provide enrichment to our shelter dogs and cats through canine storytime and cat cuddling, which HOV offers as our Junior Volunteer Program. While campers gain a better understanding of shelter practices, we also include the education of working animals within our community through guest speakers. Past guest speakers have included Montana Raptor Conservation Center, Big Sky Avalanche Dogs, Gallatin County, Bozeman PD K9s, and Intermountain Therapy Animals. Each guest speaker brings in their unique animals so campers can meet and interact with these fantastic working animals. HOV encourages all children ages 6-12 to join us for a week of camp. Weekly camp tuition is $250. To register for camp, please visit our website www.heartofthevalleyshelter. org/just-for-kids. We are pleased to offer 12 scholarships to campers who may otherwise be unable to attend. To apply for a scholarship, contact Kristin at volunteer@ heartofthevalleyshelter.org. We hope to see you this summer!

Humane Education Professional Development HOV's Volunteer and Outreach Manager Kristin Sherwood is enrolled in a highly competitive Humane Education Apprenticeship through Maddie’s Fund. Goals in this apprenticeship include recognizing how humane education supports our organization and applying methods to achieve school and community involvement. Throughout this five-week course, Kristin will gain essential skills in reaching new populations of donors, fosters, adopters, and volunteers through our outreach programs. Humane education creates compassionate, kind youth to benefit the future of animal welfare.

Pet Safe Landscaping by Jan Cashman

Bozeman is a pet-loving town. Many of us are pet owners and want to have a beautiful landscape and space where our pets can have fun and be safe. It is not difficult to make yours a pet-friendly yard and garden. 1) An enclosed fence might be your first step. My husband Jerry calls a hedge “the friendly fence,” which is seldom thick enough to keep a pet from sneaking through but can be planted inside the fence itself for a beautiful visual barrier. 2) Plant shade trees. Pets need shade in the summer when it is hot. 3) Puppies and kittens can be damaging to your landscape. They like to dig and chew and will eat almost anything. Train your puppy not to dig in your yard. Other ways to keep your pet from digging include avoiding bone and blood meal fertilizers, wire barriers such as chicken wire, and strong-smelling pet repellants. 4) Give your cat an outdoor scratching post so it won’t use your tree trunks. 5) Make sure your pet has fresh water outside at all times and a place to shelter from rain and weather.

6) Use only organic garden herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers—follow label directions and keep pets out of your yard at least until after applications have dried or been watered in. 7) Wild animals naturally avoid toxic plants such as daffodils. Domestic animals will usually avoid these plants but may not have as strong instincts as wild animals to stay away from poisonous plants. Here are some outdoor plants that are toxic to dogs and cats if ingested: Hydrangea, daffodils, gladiolus, baby’s breath, milkweed, mums, begonias, lilies, azalea and rhododendrons, foxglove, yew, the leaves, stems, and roots of tomato and potato plants and anything else in the nightshade family. 8) Dog urine can be very damaging to all plants, especially upright arborvitae, junipers, and other evergreens. There are dog repellants or, better to avoid these plants. When making your yard pet-friendly, use common sense, go organic with pesticides, and don’t plant toxic plants.

HOV Selected for Prestigious Fellowship HOV is excited to announce that Katie Grudecki, Operations Director, and Ashleigh Gallatin, Assistant Operations Director, have been accepted into the University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program Northern Tier Fellowship (UWSMP NT.) This fellowship is a 10-month program created to provide shelter leadership staff with continued education and training. In addition to this prestigious 10-month program, the fellowship offers resources through the UWSMP NT’s previous year’s participants to increase connectivity, communication, and best practices throughout the country’s shelter community. This year there are 11 fellows in the program, representing shelters from Alaska to Wisconsin. The topics covered throughout the fellowship are driven by inquiries from fellows and change as needed to accommodate the group. Thus far, these topics have included housing, enrichment, animal welfare, community education and services, adoption and intake best practices, and shelter medicine advancements.

Through this fellowship, Heart of the Valley’s goal is to stay at the forefront of sheltering best practices for the benefit of the animals within our care, supporting our community and our employees. We are eager and grateful for this opportunity, and all of the long-lasting relationships and resources will now have access to for the years to come.
