CAPITALIZE YOUR LEADERSHIP TO BE VICTORIOUS AND CRYSTALIZE YOUR BRAND TO VICTORY - DR KKJOHAN - 2

An ICON is one who lives a seless life, passionately devoted to his mission and stays true, not just till his goals are achieved but continues to inspire his people and successors to remain true to their cause. He remains focused to his objectives and takes it personally while never forgetting the eects of its success or failure will spill over to many. Tunku Abdul Rahman personied this principle from his early days of ghting for the independence of Malaya, followed by his role as the nation’s rst Prime Minister, and right until his passing, he continued to lead and inspire the leaders and people of Malaysia. Securing independence for the country was a mission close to his heart, just as it was to the rest of the nation and he took it upon himself to lead the mission to London to negotiate for Malaya’s independence, in the end fullling the promise of independence by August 1957. The years following our independence saw Malaya, and later, Malaysia, under Tunku’s leadership, attain great heights in civil administration, law enforcement and the judiciary, as well as produce outstanding scholars, professionals, diplomats and world class personalities in a wide range of industries. Tunku Abdul Rahman aspired to put the nation on the world map and he did that by bringing out the best of the most capable individuals in the country. The legacy of an ICON transcends beyond generations, continuously motivating, and stirring the spirits of people so they too can achieve greatness. The year 2013 marks Tunku’s birth centenary and the memories of his outstanding contributions to the founding and establishment of Malaysia continue to warm our hearts and spark ames of patriotism. As Tunku said so eloquently in his speech just before the proclamation of independence, “While we think of the past, we look forward in faith and hope to the future; from henceforth we are masters of our destiny, and the welfare of this beloved land is our own responsibility: Let no one think we have reached the end of the road”. His vision and dream of a successful nation continues on to the generation of today. Tunku Abdul Rahman and the ICONs we are honouring in this coee table book are valuable treasures and they truly deserve to be known, valued and remembered. THE ASIA PACIFIC BRANDS FOUNDATION Brands are wealth creators, key drivers of growth and assets to organisations and countries. Branding is the lifeline of brands. Consumers’ buying preference are influenced and driven by brands that attract and engage them. Thus, it is important that organisations understand the importance of brands and branding. Similarly, consumers must also be educated and informed of what constitutes good brands and best practices. And this is where the APBF plans to make a difference. Established in 2005, the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (APBF) is a not for profit organisation. It is led by its Patron, H.E. Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Fifth Prime Minister of Malaysia and a Board of Governors that consists of Brand Icons and Captains of Industry. The APBF aspires to increase the level of branding awareness in Malaysia and the world, as well as identify and nurture outstanding Malaysian brands to be global brands. The APBF has been delivering on its mission to educate and disseminate the importance of branding with the aim that a branding culture aided by best practices will then position Malaysia amongst the world’s greatest nations. Since its inception, the APBF has launched many initiatives through The BrandLaureate to support its objectives. The BrandLaureate is the sobriquet for brand excellence. From the publication of branding articles in newspapers and the organisation of branding seminars to The BrandLaureate Awards, these initiatives have helped to increase the awareness of brands and branding in Malaysia and the world. The APBF has achieved milestones after milestones and the journey does not stop. We will continue to scale new horizons and we invite you to join us as we discover new insights and knowledge to build strong and sustainable brands. 4

Bravo to all the winners of The BrandLaureate ICON Award 2018! I have always admired the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation for its gusto. I would go as far as to say that we are all greatly blessed to be hosted by such an iconic foundation in this equally iconic event! My experience with the APBF extends to even my pre-Patron days and its impel to drive the importance of brands and branding to every individual, institution and corporate body out there comes across as magnanimous because it intends the greater good of everyone in this nation, region and the world at large. Be it in name, style or approach, the Foundation is the greatest practitioner of what it preaches. Branding is the very heart of its day-to-day business and from my own observation; even the in-house team resonates with the idea on a personal level. This I feel is key in the branding drive. The internalization of an idea solidifies a belief system greatly. Anchoring objectives on the inside the most sure way to stay on track and achieve milestones along the way. I believe the Theme, Capitalize Your Leadership to Crystallize Your Brand, applies to the APBF here as well. The leadership qualities of the Foundation are second to none in the awards industry of this nation; and its virtues are evergreen. It is not difficult to imagine the Foundation in a magnificent state of crystallization, glimmering as glorious light passes through it, splitting up into spectrums of untold magnificence. Being in the Patron’s seat has its privileges. The most memorable of them is the care and commitment that the Foundation pours out to anyone who savours the move of brands and branding and the passion and planning that goes out to make this ICON Award significant and memorable in the best of ways. And it is the greatest wish of the Foundation that all of you will continue on the journey of branding to elevate your brand to a higher position and leave legacies that will be remembered by all. PATRON’S MESSAGE Y.A.BHG TUN DATO’ SRI HAJI ABDULLAH AHMAD BADAWI Y.A.Bhg Tun Dato’ Sri Haji Abdullah Ahmad Badawi 6

The Asia Pacific Brands Foundation remains grateful for your support in the development of brands and branding in this nation and region. Thanks to you, the Foundation has been able to keep its vision and mission going for over a decade now. This is a gathering that in essence is possible because of the profound outworking of the endeavour that the APBF planted and nurtured over the years. Indeed, the codependence of branding and the success of a brand or business most of the time remains unsaid. And because many are mum about it, there can be outcomes which are counterproductive to good business. For one, not realizing how vital sound branding is can lead to neglect of brand health. And the outcome of this obvious: as health declines, so does brand vitality. When the shine of a brand grows faint, it eventually wanes away and becomes not only forgettable, but forgotten altogether. Another scenario is not knowing the goodness of branding. This will result in the brand being left behind, particularly in a world that is growing more and more aware of the manifold benefits of branding than ever before. Where once brands started out on equal footing, they slowly fall away from the racecourse simply because they undervalue the succinctness of the fruits of branding. Not being aware of the role of branding can lead to misconceptions or worse, avoidance of it. If the right awareness on brands and branding is not created, other thoughts on the subject matter, which may even be destructive in nature, will rush in to fill the lacuna. Confusion may rise. And so may fear. Fear of the very notion of branding which will lead to refusal of it in the process. The result of this is no doubt disastrous to the brand as it is left in the dark in a place absolutely devoid of the light of branding. On the other side of the spectrum, thankfully, are those, like yourselves, who thrive in the medium of branding. In fact, you are akin to navigational lighthouses that guide sailors in the rough seas of branding equally during calm or rough times. To you, the words of this year’s Theme, Capitalize Your Leadership to Crystallize Your Brand, make perfect sense. This is why you are icons. An icon is not only a practitioner of healthy branding, but a master of it who propagates the knowledge of branding in season and out of season thereby encouraging and inspiring many. And for this, you have my heartfelt congratulations. Ybhg. Tan Sri Rainer Althoff CHAIRMAN ’S MESSAGE YBHG. TAN SRI RAINER ALTHOFF 7 7

Dr. KKJohan PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE There is something about The BrandLaureate Brand ICON Awards that draw brands to vie for its coveted position and join its league of luminaries. The ICON Award is like a magnet drawing only the very best of leaders and brands and ever since we launch it, it becomes more iconic year after year. Brands must have the power to become iconic as they progress over the years and that must be the mission of all brand custodians. An iconic brand is one that has high mind recall and remembered for its positive attributes and value. It is also one that is sustainable and has strong legacy. Iconic brands can only take place if the leadership is strong and focused in achieving their vision. Anything less will result in the brand not achieving its goals. In this respect, brand leaders must be able to capitalize on their leadership to drive the brand through best branding practices to arrive at its desired destination. In the process of branding, the brand will develop a strong foundation and eventually be crystallized, resulting in its iconic status. In my observation, iconic brands are those that have their DNA crystallized through the years and it is this that enables the brand to sustain its position as market leaders and shines through whether in good or bad times. Iconic brands are like crystals, solid, strong and sturdy and that is why it is so important that you introduce strategic branding initiatives to create a gem out of your brand. Congratulations to the winners of The BrandLaureate Brand ICON Leadership Awards 2018. You have demonstrated what it takes to be the best in your industry and the APBF is proud of your brand success. DR KKJOHAN 8

Chew Bee Peng CEO’S MESSAGE It is interesting to note that the words, a diamond is a women’s best friend, is a profound example of branding at its best. These words, seemingly simple, convey the notion that a lady simply cannot do without the dazzling crystal that is the diamond. The implication of this, as we know, generated a greater global demand for the precious mineral and redefined it as a tasteful addition to any personal collection. Now with this in mind, imagine your brand is the diamond. Automatically, you get the sensing that something about how you once perceived your brand has changed. Like the diamond, it is cut to perfection, or more refined, so to speak. You can visualize the oohs and aahs coming from others around you as their eyes catch the shine of your brand. Admiration. Awe. Wonder. These are catch words which orbit your brand like the Moon does the Earth, in and out of sight, year in and year out. Heads will turn. Now that is leadership of the impactful kind which gyrates with the Theme of The BrandLaureate ICON Awards 2018, Capitalize Your Leadership To Crystalize Your Brand, So simple, yet so eloquent! This is what the APBF wishes for your already amazing brand. I wish you hearty congratulations for being an iconic brand. An iconic brand does all of the above. It is the great crystal – the definitive diamond of brands – and the leader of branding, one that outshines other brands. In the competitive world of branding, you have no choice but to shine above your competitors, less you be pushed aside and lose your market share. Yes, it is a tough world but as recipients of The BrandLaureate Brand ICON Leadership Award, you can rise above the occasion and take on any challenges that come your way. CHEW BEE PENG 9

ICONS are brand leaders capitalizing on their leadership to achieve their vision and in the process, build and crystallize their brands. Leaders with the ability to capitalize on its leadership are strong and firm and have deep maturity of mind to guide them through. There is definitely deep gratification in seeing a brand come into full circle, using hard-sought wisdom and authority to guide fresh and bright ideas. The Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (APBF) in launching The BrandLaureate Brand ICON Leadership Awards 2018 is fully aware of the importance of leadership as the cornerstone of one’s business and brand’s success. Hence, the theme of the Awards, Capitalize Your Leadership to Crystallize Your Brand. Strong leadership determines the level of success of a brand and the best leaders leave no stone unturned as they go all lengths to exhaust all available resources to maximize the potential of their brands and crystallize what it represents. Some of the most captivating and inspiring success stories are achieved when these leaders are able to capitalize on their leadership to give them the winning edge. The strategies they adopt, the innovation that they bring forth differentiates good and great leaders. Great leaders often innovate to crystallize the brand and they understand that the very notion of innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. 18

Innovative brands are often the crystals among the rest, it is not how they look and feel like but it is how they work. And to see it through, great leaders are always great simplifiers, who can cut through the most pressing of issues, obstacles and doubts to offer the best solution in the toughest of situations where everybody understands. Leaders who capitalizes on their leadership are not only able to take people where they want to go but also take the brand where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be. Great leaders are those that drive their brands, personal and corporate to break barriers and borders. They are adrenalin charged and by being able to capitalize on their leadership and crystallizing their brands, they stamp their mark as ICONS that are respected and admired. And most of all, they inspire! Local Expertise Utilising his know how of Sabah’s business and political landscape, Tan Sri Abdul Majid Khan has successfully expanded Jaycorp’s business activities. Noting the state’s increasing lure as a travel destination meant there was a greater demand for hotel rooms and other infrastructure for the tourism industry. “We see tremendous potential in the construction industry in Sabah,” he said, adding that Jaycorp intends to pursue aggressively to tender for massive public projects, as well as projects in the private sector. It is this local knowledge and expertise that informs Jaycorp’s many decisions such as its investment in 400 acres of land in Bongawan, Sabah, which has been zoned for integrated tourism development. Its expansion into the construction industry (via its subsidiary Jaycor Engineering and Construction Sdn Bhd) is further illustrated with its successful tender to build the Azman Hashim Gallery and Auditorium at Universiti Malaysian Sabah (USM) in Kota Kinabalu. Though Jaycorp is making considerable headway in the construction and property segments, it is as a manufacturer and exporter of fine furniture that defines Jaycorp. Under Tan Sri Abdul Majid Khan’s astute leadership, the furniture division still provides for the bulk of Jaycorp’s very healthy revenue streams (in 2016, its furniture division contributed 81.9% or RM237.14mil to the group’s total FY2016 revenue of RM289.46mil). He improved operational efficiency along with stringent cost control which led to the improved earnings from the furniture division. He was also quick to recognise that any devaluation in the Malaysian Ringgit would further boost its price competitiveness. Tan Sri Abdul Majid has also made China the main focus for Jaycorp’s furniture export activities, believing that its current number one market will grow even more and that Jaycorp is well positioned to further enlarge its market share. Tan Sri Lim believes that diversification is a synergistic and logical business expansion from PLS’ existing core businesses in forest and oil palm plantation. PLS Plantations Bhd’s joint venture with Shanghai-based Greenland Group has sealed deals with four China-based fruits distributors to ship more durian products from Malaysia to China, allowing for more efficient distribution of the product in China. Huge Growth Potential In August 2018, Malaysia’s Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry had signed an export protocol with China’s General Administration of Customs for frozen whole fruit durians. With the new protocol, on top of the frozen durian paste, the export of whole fruits into China is also permitted. At the moment, the export of frozen whole fruit durians is still pending approvals by the Chinese authorities. PLS Plantations previously had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Greenland to form Greenland-PLS joint venture to sell and market its durian products. Since then, the Greenland-PLS joint venture had imported popular durian species from Malaysia, including D197 Musang King and D24 Sultan King in the form of frozen products. According to the trade data compiled by United Nations, durian exports to China had increased by 35 per cent on average a year. The exports were valued at US$1.1 billion in 2017, significantly higher than the US$243 million recorded a decade ago. All this augur well for PLS Plantations’ move into the durian business and with a seasoned entrepreneur such as Tan Sri Lim at the helm, the venture looks bound to succeed. 32
