Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017

Rejoice! There is a difference between joy and happiness. Joy includes God, is directed toward God, and is in response to something God has done. Happiness on the other hand, doesn’t necessarily include any of those things. We who know and love and follow Our Lord Jesus Christ can and should know joy. Those who don’t know Him can be happy. Even criminals can be happy. I suppose they would be happy if they had successfully robbed a bank. Another difference between joy and happiness is that joy in the Lord does not come and go the way happiness does. People who were originally happy with something they had acquired – a new home, a new car, a new job, etc. – have experienced how their original state of happiness has faded and eventually the thing that once made them happy no longer does. This is not to say that happiness is not a good thing. Or course it is. But happiness does not seem to be the entire point of our existence. Happiness comes and goes, it is often fleeting, and worse, often elusive. A British priest named Aidan Nichols has written on the topic of Catholic theology. One of the things he said is that there are six main realities about life that point to God. One is morality. We seem to have an innate sense of right and wrong, or a sense of fairness. We just seem to expect that when someone has hurt or offended us, he should have known that what he did was unfair. Our sense of a moral reality points us to God, Aidan thinks. More importantly, Nichols says that life is ultimately unsatisfying. I don’t know from experience, but I’m told that even the wealthiest of people, those who have everything anyone could possibly imagine, still come to a point where they ask, “Is that all there is?” This general dissatisfaction with life points to God. We all have a desire within us, a yearning for something that the world does not give. The world doesn’t give it because it doesn’t have it. We can have all the good things life has to offer: health, family, occupation, fine things, vacations, etc. And those things do make us happy. But even then, they do not ultimately fulfill the longing inside us. That’s because we are meant to know God and enjoy His immediate presence forever. He is what we all seek to fulfill the void within us that the world never could. That is Joy – knowing God, being reconciled to God, trusting God, loving God and knowing that He awaits us in the life of the world to come. Rejoice that your names are written in Heaven!

¡Alégrense! Hay una diferencia entre el gozo y la felicidad. El gozo incluye a Dios, es dirigido hacia Dios, y es en respuesta a algo que Dios ha hecho. La felicidad, por otro lado, no necesariamente incluye alguna de esas cosas. Nosotros, los que conocemos, amamos y seguimos a nuestro Señor Jesucristo, podemos y debemos conocer el gozo. Los que no lo conocen pueden ser felices. Incluso los criminales pueden ser felices. Supongo que estarían felices si robado con éxito un banco. Otra diferencia entre el gozo y la felicidad es que el gozo en el Señor no va y viene de la manera que la felicidad lo hace. Más importante aún, Nichols dice que la vida es en última instancia insatisfactoria. No lo sé por experiencia, pero me han dicho que incluso los más ricos, los que tienen todo lo que uno podría imaginar, todavía llegan a un punto en el que se preguntan, "¿Esto es todo?"

Esta insatisfacción general con la vida señala a Dios. Todos tenemos un deseo dentro de nosotros, un anhelo de algo que el mundo no da. El mundo no lo dan porque no lo tiene. Podemos tener todas las cosas buenas que ofrece la vida: salud, familia, trabajo, cosas finas, vacaciones, etc. Y esas cosas nos harán felices. Pero aun así, no satisfacen el anhelo dentro de nosotros.

Domingo: Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Esto se debe a que estamos destinados a conocer a Dios y gozar de su presencia inmediata para siempre. Él es lo que todos buscamos para llenar el vacío dentro de nosotros que el mundo nunca podrá darnos.

Martes:

Ese es el Gozo - conocer a Dios, reconciliarse con Dios, confiar en Dios, amar a Dios y saber que Él nos espera en la vida del mundo futuro. ¡Regocíjense de que sus nombres estén escritos en el cielo!

You may have noticed on your new church calendar that January 18 is the start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This Week ends on January 25 with the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle, and has been celebrated since 1908 by increasing numbers of Episcopal, Catholic, Anglican, Protestant, and Orthodox churches, with prayer services in their own churches and with joint prayers in many different locations. The first united celebration of the Week in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, in the 1960s, was held in the auditorium of the local insurance company, since Catholics and Protestants were unwilling to enter each others’ churches. Having enjoyed the new experience of praying together for every evening during the Week, local Christians held the second annual celebration in the Episcopal church – since the Catholics thought it was Protestant and the Protestants thought it was Catholic, they could all be open-minded and set foot in “another” church. (In following years, they were able to go to each other’s churches.) Things have come a long way since then, and a book on our BooksToBorrow shelf, Christian Unity: How you can make a difference, by Thomas Ryan, CSP, does an amazing job of surveying the current state of ecumenical endeavors in less than 200 pages. The first 41 pages lay the foundation in scripture and theology for the unity we seek, followed by chapters reviewing the current situation in churches, families, monasteries, and social action groups, with a final four chapters on education, spiritual ecumenism, “gifts to share” (reaping the harvest of the bilateral dialogues), and a final chapter, “Finding Spiritual Community in a Secular Society”, reporting on a successful venture in Portland, Oregon.

Holidays are over and the year is shaping up to be a standard January. We have been helping 45-60 families each of the three times a week we are opened to the amount of $2500-$2800 a day. It is always good that December is a higher donation month with once a year contributors donating. Business in the Thrift store is steady. The wind is just blowing all those winter clothes out the door. We are getting lots of Christmas décor donations to the point that we have no more space for full-sized trees. November we will rethink. The big walk-in cooler for the food pantry is only cooling to 50. It is located in the warehouse. The warehouse only has space heaters and no AC. The warehouse volunteers spent a few days running into the cooler to warm up. We were blessed with hundreds of cabbages. Amazing, not everyone coming to us for food could use 5 or 6 that was the ration. Such a lovely smell as they rot. Chickens will eat cut up cabbages and so will deer. Nothing goes to waste! The store traditionally closes the last couple weeks in the year, not so the Food Pantry or Financial Aid Office. However, the answering machine overloaded and a lot of messages disappeared. The greeting for the voice mail can only be changed if a technician makes a service call and does something. Sorry to everyone trying to get through. We avoid service calls as much as possible. For future, these are our hours of operation: Food Pantry and Financial Aid: Monday 2-4 pm Wednesday 7-9 pm Saturday 9-11 am Thrift Shop: MWF 10-4 Saturday 10-2 Donation Drop Offs to the Warehouse (back of store) MWF 10-3:30 Saturday 10-1:30

The Environment and Art Ministry thanks the Daughters of Notre Dame for their generous funding of our Christmas poinsettias in the church. Many of the poinsettias are purchased from the Notre Dame School annual poinsettia fundraiser. God bless our faith community!
