It is always so interesting… to pause and wonder why John was inspired to write an entire chapter… about Jesus’ encounter with a woman in Samaria… someone living in a region avoided by the religious legalists and common folk alike. But we quickly learn, she is going to have a few METANOIA moments… a few opportunities to: rethink, to reexamine, and reconsider; in other words to change her mind… before the chapter closes.

When therefore the Lord knew… how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

Siempre es muy interesante... para hacer una pausa y me pregunto por eso Juan fue inspirado a escribir un capítulo entero... sobre el encuentro de Jesús con una mujer en Samaria... alguien que vive en una región evitado por los legalistas religiosos y gente común por igual. Pero aprendemos pronto, ella va a tener unos pocos momentos a METANOIA unas pocas oportunidades para: repensar, reexaminar y reconsiderar; en otras palabras para cambiar su mente... antes de que el capítulo se cierra. 1 Cuando, pues, el Señor supo… que los fariseos habían oído decir que Jesús hace y bautiza más discípulos que Juan,

(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples… apparently, they administered the outward, external… water baptism; John the Baptist said, I baptize with water… but when He who is greater comes… He will baptize with the Spirit and with fire,)

He left Judaea (…to avoid the early pharisaical persecutions and disruptions), and departed again into Galilee.

And He must needs go through Samaria (…the former region of the 10 northern tribes of the House of Israel… sometimes called: the House of Ephraim… the younger son of Joseph in Egypt… who received ALL the birthright promises first given to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Roughly speaking, Samaria was bordered on the north from Mt Carmel to the Sea of Galilee; on the south, north of Joppa across to Bethel… and to the Jordan River. In the 21st century, this area is called: the West Bank, the mountainous region west of the Jordan River. The prophet Isaiah speaks of… the envy of Ephraim shall depart; and Ephraim shall not envy Judah… his brother—the little House of Judah being the southern 2 tribes… from where came the Jewish people; from where also came the promised Branch of Jesse… the royal law-giver and promised Messiah of God. 1 | iLibros.net internacional © 2014

En este siglo 21, esta área se llama: Cisjordania, la región montañosa al oeste del río Jordán. El profeta Isaías habla de... la envidia de Efraín se apartará; y Efraín no tendrá envidia de Judá... su cuñado la pequeña casa de Judá siendo los del sur 2 tribus... desde donde llegó al pueblo judío; de donde vinieron también al Tronco prometido de Isaías... el real legislador y prometido Mesías de Dios.

Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well (…from Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary © 1871… we read: as you might fancy a weary man would; an instance of the graphic style of St. John. In fact, this is perhaps the most human of all the scenes of our Lord’s earthly history. We seem to be beside Him, overhearing all that is here recorded. But with all that is human, how much also of the divine have we here… which the Lord imparts light and life to this unlikeliest of strangers, standing midway between the Jewish and the heathen):

and it was about the sixth hour (…noonday; when, in the Song of Songs, we read: even the flocks would rest. Yet Jesus said, I must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day).

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water (…she had her bucket and was thirsty, too):

Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

How is it… you (…not altogether refusing, yet marveling at so unusual a request from a Jewish man, as his clothing and dialect at once would reveal him to be),

being Jewish, ask drink of me… a woman of Samaria? (Women in the Middle East… for whatever reason… are not in the habit of speaking to strangers, still today)

Siendo judío, me pides a mí de beber… que soy mujer samaritana? (Las mujeres en el Medio Oriente... por alguna razón... no están en el hábito de hablar con extraños, aún hoy)

for Jewish have no dealings with Samaritans (…in other words, it is this national antipathy that gives point to the good Samaritan—Luke 11; and the thankfulness of the Samaritan leper—Luke 17. Obviously, Jesus was not party to the hostile resentments generated by those divisive traditions of men).

porque judíos y samaritanos no se tratan entre sí (...en otras palabras, es esta antipatía nacional que da punto al buen Samaritano— Lucas 11; y el agradecimiento del leproso Samaritano—Lucas 17. Jesus answered and said unto her,

If you knew the gift of God (…in the previous chapter, John wrote: God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son),

Si conocieras el don de Dios (...en el capítulo anterior, Juan escribió: De tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a Su Hijo unigénito),

If you knew the gift of God… and who it is that saith to thee,

Si conocieras el don de Dios... y quién es el que te dice,

Give me to drink;

Dame de beber;

you would have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water (…in other words, Jesus says, if you knew who was asking; you would have gladly changed places with him and made a similar request—gently reflecting on her for not meeting His request immediately) 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with,

Art thou greater than our father Jacob (…she’s listening; and already perceiving in this Stranger a claim to some mysterious prominence),

(Josephus the historian writes: when it went well with the Jewish people, they claimed kindred with them, as being descended from Joseph, but when misfortunes befell the Jews they disowned all connection with them. [Josephus, 9.14,3]

que nos dio este pozo del cual bebieron él, sus hijos y sus ganados? Jesus answered (…sizing up the situation) and said unto her,

Whosoever drinks of this water (…plainly He means this natural water… coming to us and reaching only the superficial… carnal and mundane parts of our nature)

shall thirst again:

a fountain of water… welling up (…springing, gushing, bubbling up… and flowing forth within us, ever fresh, ever living),

into everlasting life.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water (…this is not evidence of obtuseness… she expresses a wondering desire after… she scarce knew what… from this mysterious Stranger),

neither come hither to draw (…until now, this woman was merely concerned with the welfare of her physical body;

ni venga aquí a sacarla (...hasta ahora, esta mujer estaba solamente preocupada por el bienestar de su cuerpo físico;

she had come for a drink. Jesus is more concerned about the welfare of the soul).

que había llegado a tomar una copa. Jesús está más preocupado por el bienestar del alma).

Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither (…notice the manner of Jesus as He awakens her to deal consciously and in truth. He does not ask, Are you a Christian? He does not ask, Do you know Jesus? Certainly, He does not ask her to pray some routine prayer… starting with: repeat after me: I know that I’m a sinner. That is not Jesus’ style. He would never say those words, right? ).

Jesús le dijo: Ve, llama a tu marido y ven acá (…observar la manera de Jesús como Él la despierta para tratar conscientemente y en verdad. Él no pregunta, ¿Es usted un cristiano? Él no pregunta, ¿Conoce a Jesús? Ciertamente, Él no lo hace a ella rezar alguna oración rutina... comenzando con: repite conmigo: Yo sé que soy un pecador. Ese no es el estilo de Jesús. Él nunca diría esas palabras, ¿correcto?). Respondió la mujer y dijo: No tengo marido.

Porque cinco maridos has tenido;

and he whom thou now hast

y el que ahora tienes

is not thy husband:

no es tu marido:

in that you said… truly (…perhaps, the first time in her life she spoke truthfully.

esto has dicho… con verdad (...tal vez, la primera vez en su vida habló con la verdad.

As a college student, I remember reading, even memorizing the book of Ephesians; and it was not until Ephesian 4:25 drilled into my head… and then to my heart… that I finally started to understand the Word)

Como un estudiante universitario, recuerda haber leído, incluso memorizando el libro de Efesios; y no fue sino hasta Éfeso 4:25 perforado en mi cabeza... y luego a mi corazón... que finalmente comencé a entender la Palabra)
