A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR, FATHER STEVE

“Do not be afraid” are words that Jesus says over and over in today’s Gospel. There are many reasons for being afraid today, 2,000 years since Jesus spoke his words to the disciples. But the words of Jesus are important for us today also. He speaks of God the Father’s love and concern for a single sparrow: “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge…You are worth more than many sparrows.” In the First Reading the prophet Jeremiah is surrounded by enemies but he finds strength in the presence of God. He says: “…the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion.” In the Second Reading, Paul tells us how sin entered the world through the one man, Adam, but “how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.” We have nothing to fear as long as we are rooted and centered in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. • Clergy Changes: As announced in recent weeks, Fr. Chris Bazyouros has been assigned as Administrator of St. Albert the Great Parish in Compton as of July 1st. Fr. Chris has served as Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s this past year and has been a blessing for our parish in many ways. We will miss him. A farewell reception for Fr. Chris will take place after all the Masses at St. Mary’s in Palmdale next Sunday. • On July 1st Father Fidelis Omeaku from Nigeria will begin a four year assignment as Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on May 31st by Cardinal Mahony at the Cathedral in Los Angeles. We are blessed with his assignment to our parish and look forward to his ministry at St. Mary’s. • We ask your prayers for more vocations to the priesthood among the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As Fr. Tony Scannell said at the First Mass of Fr. Tim Klosterman: “the life of a priest is a great adventure”. • Many thanks to all who completed a Volunteer Card at Mass at St. Mary’s in Palmdale on June 15th. Phone calls will soon be made by Ministry Leaders to invite your participation in the work of the Church in our parish. • The completion of the Parish Hall, parish offices and meeting rooms has been delayed because of new requirements from the Fire Dept. We hope to bless the new buildings on a Sunday in July. • Father Steve will be away this week on the annual retreat for Lo que digo al oído, priests of the Archdiocese of Los pregónenlo desde las azoteas Angeles (he was unable to go on this spiritual retreat in April because of work and meetings. He will return to St. Mary’s on Saturday.

“No tengan miedo” son las palabras que Jesús dice una y otra vez en el Evangelio de hoy. En nuestros días hay muchas razones para temer, a 2000 años de que Jesús dijo estas palabras a sus discípulos. Pero esas palabras son muy importantes para nosotros también hoy. Él habla del amor de Dios Padre y de su preocupación y cuidado por un simple gorrión: ¿No es verdad que se venden dos pajarillos por una moneda? Sin embargo ni uno de ellos cae por tierra si no lo permite el Padre… ustedes valen más que un pajarillo”. EN la Primera Lectura el profeta Jeremías se ve rodeado de enemigos, pero encuentra fuerza en en la presencia de Dios. Él dice: “… el Señor, guerrero poderoso está a mi lado”. En la Segunda Lectura, Pablo nos dice cómo el pecado entró en el mundo por un hombre, Adán, pero, por el don de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, se ha desbordado sobre todos la abundancia y la gracia de Dios”. No tenemos nada qué temer, mientras estemos enraizados y centrados en Jesucristo, nuestro Señor y Salvador. •

CAMBIOS EN EL CLERO: Como lo anunciamos hace algunas semanas, el Padre Chris Bazyouros ha sido asignado para servir como Administrador en la Parroquia de San Alberto el Grande, en Compton, desde el 1º de Julio próximo. Padre Chris ha servido como Pastor Asociado en Santa María durante este pasado año, y ha sido una bendición para nuestra Parroquia en muchas maneras. Lo vamos a extrañar mucho. Se le ofrecerá una despedida el próximo fin de semana, después de todas las Misas, en Santa María, en Palmdale.

El 1º de Julio, llegará el Padre Fidelis Omeaku, de Nigeria, empezará su asignatura de cuatro años en Nuestra Parroquia, como Pastor Asociado. Él ha sido ordenado al Sacerdocio para la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles el 31 de mayo, por el Cardenal Mahony, en la Catedral de Los Angeles. Somos bendecidos con su asignatura a nuestra Parroquia, y esperamos con ansia su Ministerio en Santa María.

Les pedimos sus oraciones por más vocaciones al Sacerdocio, entre el pueblo de la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles. Pues como dijo el PadreTony Scannell en la primera Misa del Tim Klosterman: “la vida del Sacerdote es una gran aventura”.

Muchas gracias a todos los que completaron su tarjeta de voluntario en las Misas de Santa María en Palmdale el 15 de junio. Los encargados de los Ministerio parroquiales estarán hacienda las llamadas telefónicas a todos para invitarles a participar en el trabajo ministerial de la Parroquia. y así mismo en nuestra Iglesia Católica.

Padre Steve estará ausente esta semana, para asistir al retiro anual para Sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles ( ya que no pudo asistir en abril debido al mucho trabajo y reuniones).Regresará a Santa María el sábado.

Habrá una recepción para el Padre Chris Bazyouros después de las Misas del fin de semana del 29 de junio en Santa María en Palmdale, en su ultimo fin de semana en nuestra Parroquia. Despues nos dejara para ir a su nueva asignatura como Administrador la Parroquia de San Alberto el Grande en Compton. Cualquier persona que quiera participar en la preparación de la recepción del Padre Chris o en alguna otra manera en las Misas, por favor llame a la oficina parroquial al 947-3306.

PARISH HALL NEWS The Parish Hall, parish offices and meeting rooms are almost complete. Fourteen stained glass windows from the Old Church have been placed in the New Hall and three windows have been placed in the meeting rooms which will be called the Sacred Heart Room, the Holy Family Room and Our Lady of Guadalupe Room (because of the windows placed there). The Fire Dept is asking for a second Fire Dept connector and other requirements. This means that a new pipe has to be laid across the Church parking lot. Work cannot begin until the Fire Dept approves the design. The completion of the plaza, the return of the statues of Holy Mary and St. Joseph from the front of the Old Church and the building of a new shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe cannot take place until the Fire Dept work is finished and approved. Please be careful when work begins on laying the new pipe across the Church parking lot. It will not be possible to bless the new buildings on June 8th. We hope to do so on a Sunday in June or July once all the work is completed and the Fire Dept and City of Palmdale give permission to use the buildings. Your financial support for our Capital Campaign, “A Time to Build”, now and in the future is very important for the construction and the $12 million in loans needed for the new Church, parking lot and landscaping, new Hall, parish offices and meeting rooms.

There will be a reception for Fr. Chris Bazyouros after all the Masses at St. Mary’s in Palmdale on the weekend of June 29th, his last week-end at our parish before leaving to become Administrator of St. Albert the Great Parish in Compton. Anyone who would like to participate in preparing for the reception or in any other way after any of these Masses, is welcome to call the Parish Office, 947-3306.

NOTICIAS SOBRE EL SALON PARROQUIAL El Salón Parroquial y los otros edificios están casi terminados. Se han colocado en el nuevo Salón Parroquial 14 ventanas con cristales de colores y diseños religiosos, (que pertencían a la Iglesia antigua. Estas se encuentran en cada uno de los salones de juntas, de manera que sean reconocidos y llamados como el salón del Sagrado Corazón, de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y de la Sagrada Familia). El Departamento de Bomberos ha pedido un segundo conector y otros requerimientos. Esto significa que una nueva pipa sera colocada a lo largo del estacionamiento de la Iglesia. El trabajo no se reiniciará hasta que el Departamento de Bomberos apruebe y autorice el diseño. La terminación de la.colocación de las imágenes de San José y la Santísima Virgen, que estaban en el frente de la antigua Iglesia y la construcción de la Ermita de Guadalupe, no se puede continuar por la misma razón. Por favor tengan cuidado cuando los trabajos comiencen en el estacionamiento. No sera posible bendecir los nuevos edificios el día 8 de junio, como lo habíamos planeado. Esperamos hacerlo en algún domingo de junio o en Julio, en cuanto el Departamento de Bomberos y la Ciudad de Palmdale, den el permiso para usar los edificios. Su apoyo económico a nuestra Campaña Capital, “Es Tiempo de Construir”, ahora y en el futuro es muy importante para la construcción y poder ir pagando el préstamo de $12 millones que se necesitaron para este propósito.

THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE Statement of the Bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles June 16, 2008 The Catholic Bishops of the United States have affirmed repeatedly that persons with a homosexual orientation “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity.”1 Accordingly the Bishops condemn all forms of violence, scorn, and hatred—whether subtle or overt—against men and women who are homosexual. All people, regardless of sexual inclination, are called to holiness; and “should be encouraged to take an active role in the faith community” and to live according to its teachings.2 Nonetheless, the Church cannot approve of redefining marriage, which has a unique place in God’s creation, joining a man and a woman in a committed relationship in order to nurture and support the new life for which marriage is intended. The meaning of marriage is deeply rooted in history and culture, and has been shaped considerably by Christian tradition. Its meaning is given, not constructed. “When marriage is redefined so as to make other relationships equivalent to it, the institution of marriage is devalued and further weakened.”3 The state has a primary and fundamental obligation to protect and promote the family, which is rooted in marriage and sustained by it. Some benefits currently sought by same sex partners can already be obtained without regard to marital status. For example, individuals can agree to own property jointly with another, and they can generally designate anyone they choose to be a beneficiary of their will or to make health care decisions in case they become incompetent.4 Other desired benefits such as sharing in a partner’s health insurance could be made available without the drastic step of a cultural or legal redefinition of marriage. EL ESTADO DE CALIFORNIA Y LOS MATRIMONIOS DEL MISMO SEXO Declaración de los Obispos de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles16 de junio de 2008

Los Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos han afirmado repetidamente que los individuos con una orientación homosexual, "deben ser aceptados con respeto, comprensión y sensibilidad,"1[1] De acuerdo a esto, los obispos condenan todas las formas de violencia, desprecio y odio— tanto sea enforma sutil o manifiesta—contra hombres y mujeres homosexuales. Toda persona, sin importar su inclinación sexual, es llamada a la santidad y "debe ser motivada a tomar un papel activo en la comunidad de fe" y vivir de acuerdo a sus enseñanzas. 2[2] No obstante, la Iglesia no puede aprobar la redefinición del matrimonio, el cual tiene un lugar único en la creación de Dios, uniendo a un hombre y a una mujer en una relación de compromiso con el fin de cultivar y apoyar la nueva vida que tiene por objetivo el matrimonio. El significado del matrimonio está profundamente arraigado a la historia y la cultura, y ha sido cuidadosamente estructurado por la tradición cristiana. Su significado ya está establecido; no está en proceso de elaborarse. "Cuando el matrimonio se redefine, como para establecer otras relaciones equivalentes, la institución del matrimonio se devalúa y posteriormente se debilita."3[3] El estado tiene una obligación fundamental y primaria de proteger y promover a la familia, la cual está enraizada al matrimonio y sostenida por éste.Algunos beneficios que actualmente buscan parejas del mismo sexo pueden ya obtenerse sin importar el estado civil. Por ejemplo, los individuos pueden ponerse de acuerdo en poseer propiedades conjuntamente, y generalmente designar a alguien que ellos elijan como beneficiario de su testamento o tomar decisiones en cuanto a la salud en caso de volverse incompetente. 4[4] Otros beneficios deseados, tales como compartir el plan de seguro médico de su pareja podría estar disponible sin tener que dar el paso drástico de redefinir cultural y legalmente al matrimonio. Safeguard the Children parish committees were mandated by Cardinal Roger Mahony in 2002. The parish committees are foundational in ensuring the safe environment of parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese. These permanent committees coordinate initiatives such as education opportunities, site evaluations and local presentations by speakers including police, nurses and therapists. The committees are also responsible for implementing archdiocesan safe environment policies and procedures. For more information, please contact the parish office.
