MEET OUR NEW SEMINARIAN INTERN My name is Jose Maria Ortiz (better known as Chepe). I was born on October 7th, 1983, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. I am the oldest among three siblings. I grew up in a rural town in Jalisco called San Martin de Hidalgo where I lived until I was 15 years old. In 1999, I moved with my family to Santa Maria, California, where I worked in the fields for two years. In 2001, I graduated from Santa Maria High School and in 2003 received my AA from Allan Hancock Community College. I transferred to UCLA as a Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics student and it was during a summer internship at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2004 that I first saw the light of my priestly vocation and answered “yes”.

In the midst of my struggles to respond God’s call, the Holy Spirit reminded me four times of my “yes”. 1) During a confession my confessor told me, “You can heal souls”; 2) in a Cursillo, I experienced a filial love towards God the Father; 3) on an ordinary Sunday, the Lord appealed to my conscience with the Scripture reading: “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62); and 4) on God’s insistence, I surrendered my will in 2005. I thought I was giving God a chance, but it was Him giving me the most amazing and challenging adventure of my life: following Him. In September 2005, I took the habit as a novice in the congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. I joyfully lived my consecration as a Religious Brother until the year 2012 when God invited me to “come back home” to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles while taking Theology classes from the University of Notre Dame, IN. From 2012-2014, I was placed at my current home parish St. Finbar Catholic Church in Burbank, CA in order to continue discerning my vocation to the priesthood. After the summer of 2014, I joined St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo to continue my theological formation. I now arrive to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish, after a wonderful cultural immersion in the Philippines over this summer 2016. I am here to walk with you and learn from you as much as much as possible “[May] the one who began a good work in you continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1, 3-11).

Monday, September 2nd 6:30 & 9am Fair set-up will begin after the 6:30 mass. All workers are encouraged to come for a blessing prior to set-up.

WORLD YOUTH DAY REFLECTION Just finishing a not so great junior year, I was lacking in faith to say the least. The year had taken a huge toll on me, leading me to doubt God and faith, and I was feeling so lost, confused, and afraid. I was afraid for what would become of my dreams for the future, and what would become of me after my senior year was over. I looked forward to the trip so I could escape my daily life and try to find a way for me to fall in love with my faith. Going into the airport for departure was nothing exciting. I still felt stuck, and the feeling of freedom hadn’t reached me yet. However, once we stepped foot onto foreign ground, I felt like a huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders. I was accompanied by so many wonderful people who had experienced the same kind of junior year, and it felt so nice to have people to relate to. Throughout our eleven days, I experienced life changing experiences that really propelled me into a deep search within myself. Praying in a field with millions of teens exactly like myself made me realize the strength and unity of the Catholic faith. I don’t believe that a book (the bible) thousands of years old could have survived without having contained some sort of truth. Seeing how far the faith has gone and learning about the many miracles that have happened at the holy sites we visited, there’s no way I could have doubted our faith. It was a cause that was worth dying for, as examined by the countless martyrs including St.Maximilian Kolbe, whose shrine we visited. On the last day, I got the lesson I yearned for since our departure. At the closing mass, Pope Francis exclaimed, “we are God’s beloved children, always. So you can see that not to accept ourselves, to live glumly, to be negative, means not to recognize our deepest identity. It is like walking away when God wants to look at me, trying to spoil his dream for me. God loves us the way we are, and no sin, fault or mistake of ours makes him change his mind.” I had been living a truly “glum” life before going to Krakow. I was failing a class, cutting off relationships, and I was constantly angry at my family life. After the pope had said this and I heard it from the translator on the radio, I was hit with a realization that everything happens for a reason. He has a plan for me, and no matter what I do, there is a path carved out for me. All I have to do is try my best and leave the rest to Him. Since arriving back home, I’m the happiest I’ve been in two years and things are going great. Thanks to the parish and my countless supporters, I’m back on track! -Chance Liu

Hello, my name is Frida Linero and my WYD experience was full with excitement, frustration, and happiness. One of my most valuable memories was when I had the opportunity to meet many youth from all over the world like Brazil, Dubai, and Italy. This was the second day we were in Kraków, where I had the opportunity to converse with other youth. I saw so many new, but yet friendly faces. I got to speak to many different people while waiting in line together to visit the Divine Mercy Sanctuary and the place where Saint Faustina lived and died. While I was outside the Divine Mercy Shrine I had the opportunity to met some really cool people. Even though they did not speak English and I did not speak Portuguese I was able to communicate with them by speaking Spanish and they were able to understand me. Although we talked for a few of minutes, it felt like we were friends for a long time. Another memorable event was the youth prayer vigil, the night before the closing mass. It was a very intimate moment I had to pray and reflect. At the moment I remembered how the journey began with our fundraisers such as Koins for Kraków and then realized we were now in Poland, I was grateful for that. All the getting up early to attend the fundraisers and hours in the kitchen making lumpias was all worth it and it was all possible thanks to the church community and of course God. I personally would like to thank my pilgrimage donors, for your kind and generous donation.

No debemos temer.

Amen. ¡LA VOZ DE JESÚS ES ÚNICA! ¡PREGUNTA A JESÚS QUE COSA QUIERE DE TI Y SE VALIENTE! Papa Francisco
