PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of the first quarter! We’ve had a smooth and productive start to the school year. Your students’ teachers are working hard to help kids be successful in their classes and on the sports fields. There is a lot of energy and excitement in the halls and class rooms as kids go about the business of preparing for their futures! We have some more new faculty members to introduce to you: Colleen Lowder is a first year teacher, but may be a familiar face to some of you because she did her student teaching at East last year. Colleen has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, and completed her Masters of Teaching degree from Westminster College. She teaches French and English Language Arts. Colleen is a dynamo in class with her students, and her philosophy towards her responsibly as an educator is inspiring. She says, “I believe that although it is important that our educational system produce lit literate, skilled individuals who are able to function as citizens within their society, it is also important to produce conscientious, kind, and caring people with a sense of social justice. My goal as an educator is to be fully committed to the overall pict picture of education without being dissuaded by the slow nature of change and improvement. I hope to be an advocate for students, for myself, and for schools in general.” Another of our new teachers is Michael Larson. Michael has a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Utah and is currently working on a Masters of Education degree at Utah State University. He has two years of teaching experience, and is teaching Medical Terminology and Biology. He also has been coaching boys’ basketball at EHS for the llast four years. Michael is a proud graduate of East High, and is very excited to be back with the Leopards again. When asked to share a wise insight about teaching, he quotes Eddie Vedder, “Replace fear of the unknown with curiosity.”

We have two academic coaches this year who have been provided by the Salt Lake City School District to support teachers. Wendy Blankenship is our Literacy Coach. Wendy has an MFA in Creative Writing from Naropa University, Reading and ESL Endorsements, and a B.F.A. Language Arts, History through Southern Utah University. This is her 14th year in education. She was a class room teacher for 10 years, and comes to East after having spent 4 years as an Academic coach at Bryant, Glendale, and Horizonte. Wendy quotes qu Carl Sagan when asked about her educational philosophy, “Frederick Douglass taught that literacy is the path from slavery to freedom. There are many kinds of slavery and many kinds of freedom, but reading is still the path.” Amanda Cangelosi is our Math ath Coach. Amanda earned an M.S. in statistics from Utah State University; a Post-Baccalaureate Post in Mathematics at Smith College, and a B.S. in Mathematics Education with a minor in Chemistry Teaching from Utah State University. She has been teaching for 15 years; having taught math in several schools in Utah and two in California. She says, “I find it heartbreaking that the “Math is Power” propaganda so prevalent during my youth has contributed to an institutionalized loss of self. Those who think that mathematics math is the most important subject of study tend to be those who know the least about it. Be kind; practice empathy; rage against idleness; work hard; seek understanding; question yourself. Curriculum is just a vessel. Having said all that, I think math is super interesting. (What’s the most important subject? Obviously, the correct answer is history.)” We have two new members of the Counseling team this year. Lauren Fredericks is a transplant from the City University of New York, Hunter College where she s earned a Masters in School Counseling. She is splitting her schedule, working part time at East this year (mostly with sophomores) and at Escalante Elementary School. When responding to the question about her favorite thing about teaching she said, “I love l my profession, because I find it extremely rewarding to make a difference in the life of students. Also, I love working with others and having a school community. I look forward to working with the East High School staff this year!” Elizabeth Shaw is our ur new College Access Advisor. She can also be found in the Counseling office. Please be sure to have your student get to know Elizabeth – her responsibility is to help students at East transition to college. She says, “I believe in the value of a higher education ducation and that a college education should be accessible for all students regardless of their background.” As East continues to work towards attaining the status of an AVID Demonstration School it is exciting to see veteran staff members work with new members to enhance the learning environment for all students. We have pre-service pre teachers in and out of the building ilding all the time, as they come to observe and contribute to the great work that is happening here. We

encourage you to ask your kids about their experiences here, and for you to communicate with teachers and administrators about any questions you may have about your students’ progress. CCR’S (Career & College Ready) We will begin Junior CCR’s during the month of November. During this meeting, counselors will discuss with each junior educational and career goals, graduation requirements, posthigh school plans, and classes for their senior year. Each junior should have received a registration card and course catalog in their Language Arts class. These tentative course selections will be reviewed and finalized in this meeting. College applications, transcripts, & letters of recommendation As we head into the peak time for applying for college admissions/scholarships, please make note of the following requirements: 1. Transcripts need to be requested from Carolyn Smith in the Counseling Center. The cost is $1.00 per transcript. Requests for transcripts MUST be made at least ONE WEEK prior to the due date of the application/scholarship. Any transcripts needed by Jan. 1, 2016, MUST be requested by DEC. 11 at the latest. 2. Teachers, counselors, administrators require at least TWO WEEKS to write a letter of recommendation, so plan carefully. 3. Students using the on-line Common Application MUST let recommenders know the DUE DATE for the recommendation. The on-line form does not share that information. Due to the extremely large number of requests we receive for transcripts and recommendations, it may not be possible for us to meet your deadline if you do not follow these guidelines. ACADEMIC ALL-STATE Congratulation to Eleanor Wettstein (cross country) and Gabby McFarlane (volleyball) for their selections to the fall Academic All-State teams! There were 11 senior student-athletes from East that were nominated for these awards with a minimum GPA of 3.75. We are very proud of these students that have been able to succeed in and out of the classroom.

Each year The Deseret Morning News and KSL Television sponsor this contest to recognize outstanding high school seniors in Utah and to award them cash prizes and scholarship possibilities to help with their college expenses. To be selected as a Sterling Scholar nominee, students must demonstrate activity and interest in an area of high school education, characterized by one of the program’s categories: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Computer Technology, Trade and Technical Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Foreign Language, Business and Marketing, Speech and Drama, Visual Arts, Vocal Performance, and Dance. If you feel qualified to apply for more than one category, you may do so by filling out a separate application for each. Students must also have high academic scores and exhibit their involvement in service to the school and community. Students may pick up an application for the Sterling Scholar Program in the Counseling Center or in Mrs. Hebert’s English classroom, D-204 beginning October 7th . AVID AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a national college readiness system for elementary through higher education. Salt Lake City School District is an AVID District, ensuring that all our students have an equal opportunity to be college and/or career ready. East High School faculty and students welcome the chance to highlight the effectiveness of a school wide program that addresses the needs of the whole child, promotes and supports rigorous inquiry-based coursework, and prepares students for independent and studentdriven learning. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. EHS AVID seniors have all applied to the University of Utah and Westminster College, as well as many more. Our goal at East is to provide access to information for college and career readiness. Every teacher, counselor, and administrator at East High school is here because he or she hopes to see students succeed. The AVID elective offers support for to first generation students whose goals are to attend and graduate from college. We work closely with families, counselors, college access advisors and scholarship advisors to provide each and every student with as much information as possible to ensure their college dreams become realities. SENIOR ADS FOR THE YEARBOOK Attention Parents and Students! Senior Ads are still available for purchase through November 24th. Parents can give their senior a special shout-out in the Yearbook with a Senior Ad. They are only $35, and they’re a great way to recognize and congratulate a student for their hard work and success in high school. Senior Ads include a baby photo of the senior and a short message of congratulations (25 words or less). If you already purchased a Senior Ad, make sure you download the form, fill it out, and deliver it to A306 OR mail it to East High School Yearbook (school address). Students can purchase a Friend-to-Friend Ad to be featured in the yearbook! The 1/15 page ads with one photo and 25 words or less are $35. Have a group of three or more friends? Purchase 1/3 page ads for $200 with up to 6 pictures and 100 words. They are a fun way to commemorate the people that made your high school experience lots of fun. Also, sports teams or clubs can purchase 1/3 page Ads for their athletes or club members! These Ads are a great way to recognize graduating athletes for their hard work and dedication on and off the field, and to congratulate Club Presidencies for their commitment and success. Order forms for these Ads are available on the East High website and in the front office. Make sure to get them turned in and paid for (to the Treasurer) by November 24th! IMANI CLUB The African – American Imani club will be selling ethnic cookbook for $5.00 as fundraiser to raise monies for scholarships, speakers, and activities here at East high to build community among the student body and field trips, etc. The sell will start the second week of November and we’d like very much to get the community support. EAST HIGH’S ART FIELD TRIP By Donna Pence

On Wednesday the 21st, approximately 50 art students accompanied Ms. Porter, Ms. McCoy, and Ms. Pence on a field trip to the UMFA, the State Capitol, and the Cathedral of the Madeleine. The weather was very nice, which allowed us to tour the exterior architecture of both the Cathedral and the Capitol building as well as enjoy our lunches “picnic” style at the museum. Our first stop was the Cathedral where we enjoyed seeing all the murals, stained glass and wood carving. Upon entering, the organ was booming and some of the students were cautious about walking in thinking that there may be a religious service in session. Luckily they were just practicing for an organ recital the following week. One of the other highlights was the gargoyles on the exterior of the hundred and six year old building. Ms. Porter’s classes create a gargoyle as one of their first projects in beginning ceramics, and seeing actual gargoyles in architecture is a rare experience in our city. Next we traveled to the State Capitol Building and noticed rows of white crosses on the front lawn as well as camera crews. The students were excited to learn that, in the spirit of performance art, there was a protest going on over the recent legislative vote not to expand affordable health care in Utah. Perrin Merrill a sophomore said, “ …the protest created a really strong feeling in that the repetition of the crosses emphasized the importance of their message. This was my favorite part of the whole field trip.” On our “Art Tour” of the capitol, Ms. McCoy liked seeing the Birdseye marble that was quarried from Birdseye Utah and Ms. Pence liked seeing the governor’s desk that was milled from a maple tree that was uprooted during Salt Lake City’s only tornado back in 1999. Our final stop was the Utah Museum of Fine Art (UMFA) to see two exhibits. The first one was the British Landscapes that included famous works by Turner and Monet while the second one was called “Make Your Own Friends” a very contemporary exhibit by Brian Bress that brings together video, sculpture, and works on paper from the last ten years of Bress's career. The Los Angeles-based artist is known for his fictional anthropomorphic characters, which he brings to life out of thrift-store finds and upholstery foam with casual doodles,

cartoon animation, paint, and video cameras. In contrast, the British landscape exhibit spans generations of landscape painters, photographers, and environmental artists. The work references both the poetry of landscape and the environmental threats posed by industrialism-key themes that persist in British art today and that resonates with Utah audiences as well. When asked what medium students would most like to experiment with after seeing both exhibits, the majority surprising chose oil painting over digital media! We would like to thank the tour guides at the Capitol for their fun and informative tour, the docents at the UMFA for their engaging exposure to world famous art, and Trish Clay for her donation to the East High Art Department Field trip fund. FALL SPORTS We have had many individual and team successes during the fall sports season. Region titles were won by the boys’ golf, girls’ soccer, and football teams. MENSAJE DEL DIRECTOR Es difícil creer que hemos llegado al final del primer trimestre. Hemos tenido una fluida y productiva al inicio del año escolar. Los estudiantes, los maestros están trabajando duro para ayudar a los niños a tener éxito en sus clases y en el campo de deportes. Hay mucha energía y entusiasmo en los salones y salas de clase como kids go sobre el negocio de la preparación para su futuro!
