As Chairman of the Prince George’s County Planning Board of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, I am delighted and proud to join in announcing the exciting roster of programs and activities the Commission has planned to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2016! The annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month honors the tremendous value and contributions that people of Hispanic/Latino ancestry bring to our Country, our State, our County, and our agency. This yearly commemoration also provides an opportunity for the Commission to broaden our outreach to ALL segments of our community and to reinforce our overriding commitment to respect and celebrate the similarities and differences that make us stronger! Building partnerships with ALL of the wonderfully diverse communities and customers we serve has energized our communities, enhanced our community’s rich history and heritage, and has helped make the Commission the only SIX-TIME NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD-WINNING AGENCY in the United States! Celebrate and honor Hispanic heritage during Hispanic Heritage Month On behalf of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Department of Parks and Recreation, I am excited to share with you the wealth of events and activities we have planned throughout Prince George’s County during Hispanic Heritage Month. Throughout the month, we celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Hispanic-Americans, whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. As Prince George’s County grows and changes, we celebrate the amazing diversity of art and culture that Hispanics and Hispanic-Americans have added— and continue to contribute—to the rich tapestry of our communities and neighborhoods. In this brochure you’ll find music, dance, art exhibitions, sporting events, and history tours. You’ll find opportunities for the whole family to create arts and crafts, savor delicious food, and hear stories from around the world. The centerpiece of this month-long celebration is our 35th Annual Hispanic Festival, which will be held on Sunday, September 18 and is expected to draw thousands of celebrants from throughout Prince George’s County and beyond. E

ach year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Art Exhibit: Latino Artist– Luis Peralta Del Valle Award-winning artist, Luis Peralta Del Valle was born in Nicaragua in 1980 and migrated to the U.S. in 1985. At the age of 13 he started painting graffiti murals in the District, Maryland, and Virginia. A few years later at Bell Multicultural High School, he began his formal artistic education, continuing his studies at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Peralta Del Valle explores various subjects in his works. He paints family, friends, and everyday people, as well as historic events and icons, such as Pope Francis, Nelson Mandela, Frederick Douglass, Roberto Clemente, and Celia Cruz. The murals, portraits, and landscapes Peralta Del Valle creates tell stories in vibrant colors and realistic figures. They draw the viewer into the long traditions of art and yet speak to the viewers’ modern sensibility. FREE Film Series: Latino Art in the United States September 15, 6:30 pm – Piñero Piñero tells the story of the explosive life of a Latino icon, the poet-playwright-actor Miguel Piñero, whose urban poetry is recognized as a precursor to rap and hip-hop. After doing time in hard-core Sing-Sing for petty thefts and drug dealing, Piñero’s prison experiences developed into the 1974 Tony-nominated play Short Eyes. The resulting notoriety and fame was too much for the Latino bad-boy genius who retreated to the darker corners of New York City.

September 29, 6:30 pm – Visions of Aztlán Visions of Aztlán explores the Chicano Art movement that flowered amid the confrontations and turbulent street demonstrations of the 1960s. Directed by veteran Chicano filmmaker Jesús Salvador Treviño, Visions of Aztlán introduces us to a generation of Mexican-American artists who were inspired by the Chicano Civil Rights Movement to portray Mexican-American life at a time when the community was largely invisible in the popular culture.

Yo Soy Negro: Exploring Afro-Latino Heritage and Identity Minorities comprise the majority of the population of Prince George’s County. People of African descent comprise sixty-five percent of the County’s population and people of Hispanic or Latin descent comprise seventeen percent. But what about those people who identify with both of these minorities? Our program will address this Afro-Latino population, which is often obscured in official government statistics. Through music, food and dance, this program celebrates the dynamic heritage and culture of Afro-Latinos in the United States and abroad. A pop-up exhibit and panel discussion with leaders from the local Afro-Latino community focuses on this often ignored population and their experiences within Prince George’s County. Afro Bop Alliance Latin Grammy Award winning Afro Bop Alliance (ABA) is an Afro-Caribbean jazz ensemble, inspired by the great be-bop tradition married to the rich rhythmic stylings of Afro-Caribbean music. They received Latin Jazz Album of the Year at the 9th Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2008 for the recording “Afro Bop Alliance, featuring Dave Samuels”. Exhibición de Arte: Artista Latino Luis Peralta Del Valle El artista galardonado Luis Peralta Del Valle nació en Nicaragua en 1980 y emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1985. A la edad de 13 años, comenzó a pintar murales de grafiti en el Distrito de Columbia, Maryland y Virginia. Pocos años después, comenzó su educación artística formal en la escuela secundaria de Bell Multicultural y continuó sus estudios en el Colegio de Arte y Diseño de Corcoran. Peralta Del Valle explora diversos temas en sus obras y le gusta pintar temas de la familia, los amigos y la gente común, así como los eventos y los iconos históricos como el Papa Francis, Nelson Mandela, Frederick Douglass, Roberto Clemente y Celia Cruz. Yo Soy Negro: Explorando la herencia e identidad de los afrolatinos Las minorías constituyen la mayoría de la población del Condado de Prince George’s - las personas de descendencia africana constan el 65% y las personas de descendencia hispana o latina constan el 17%. Pero, ¿qué pasa con aquellos que se identifican con ambas minorías? Este programa se ocupará de esta población de afrolatinos, una población que a menudo se oculta en las estadísticas oficiales del gobierno. A través de música, comida y baile, este programa celebra la herencia dinámica y cultura de los afrolatinos en los Estados Unidos y fuera. In 2015, M-NCPPC’s Department of Parks and Recreation won an unprecedented SIXTH national Gold Medal for excellence in parks and recreation management. Eligible agencies must be CAPRA accredited, meeting more than 160 standards. Prince George’s County has the best parks and recreation agency in the country!
