HOLY SPIRIT CHURCH

Dear Friends of Holy Spirit, I’m sure we are all enjoying the cooler temperatures and the lower humidity. This week we have had some beautiful weather! We are blessed. We almost always have people in the parish who are battling cancer. Sometimes this disease will strike someone young and in the prime of her/his life. About 18 months ago, one of our parishioners, Angie Cwikla, began her battle with an aggressive form of breast cancer. After two very strong rounds of chemo, the cancer is still active. Experimental treatment is being considered which insurance does not support. Family income has been greatly reduced and bills are piling up. Angie is 41 and she and David have a son, Jake, who is 11. Pray, pray, pray. As a community we have a responsibility to pray for each other. I asked you to pray daily that God will help Angie. Pray for healing; pray for strength; pray for David and Jake. If you can help financially, there is a GoFundMe.com fund for Angie. Just go to the GoFundMe website, type in Cwikla and it will take you to their page. I could add other names (like Chris and Warren). We need each other as a community of faith, so let us turn to the Lord with the power of our love and faith. God’s Love and Blessings,

Twinning Ministry Our Twinning Ministry began in the fall of 2010. Fr. Chris had a call out meeting for anyone interested in serving on a committee to select a parish in Central America to share our faith and resources. About 10 people met several times, forming criteria we thought important in selecting a parish. Ultimately, we selected San Francisco de Asís in Texiguat, El Paraíso, Honduras, from several parishes suggested by the Parish Twinning Program of the Americas. The initial visit was in January 2011, with Fr. Chris, three parishioners, and Frances Sosadeter, who represents PTPA, the organization that pairs parishes in the US with those in Central America. Since then, we have made 12 trips to our sister parish, twice a year (January and June). A total of 140 visitors (69 different people) have made this trip (~12 per visit). The purpose of our twinning ministry is to develop friendships and relationships with the people of Texiguat sharing prayer, solidarity, charity, and compassion. A typical visit includes daily prayer or Mass, visits to the elderly or sick of surrounding communities (~40), conducting clinics for distribution of eyeglasses, teaching English to the youth, retreats and other activities with the youth, painting or improvement to the school/preschool. Typically, we bring medicines, tooth brushes and toothpaste, supplies for the children or other supplies for which they have expressed a need. Sor Dorly, a missionary sister from Brazil, has a medical clinic in the town. She has asked for certain prescription and non-prescription medications that we supply through generous donations of our Holy Spirit parishioners. Third Sunday freewill offering donations help to pay for these medicines and other necessities that Padre Juan Pablo and their twinning committee decides to be beneficial for the people of San Francisco de Asís Parish. Our ministry team meets monthly, the second Tuesday at 6:00 pm, in the parish center. Anyone is welcome and invited to come and be part of the ministry, even if there is no desire or ability to visit Honduras. The co-chairpersons are Christine Brokaw, [email protected] and John Evans, [email protected]. Once a year, we invite people on their twinning committee to come to Holy Spirit. This usually is in October or November. The purpose of their visit here to Holy Spirit is not only to show them our culture and lifestyle, but also to help promote our relationship with their parish. Our next trip will take place January 23-30, 2017. The cost is about $1000, depending on airfare costs. Each traveler is responsible for their trip expenses; however, many fund raise or apply for scholarships. Two of our youth were recently awarded scholarships from the archdiocese for the June trip. This is truly a spiritual experience. Most people return with a new outlook and compassion for others. As many have expressed, “We go there thinking we are going to serve them, but see that they are the ones serving us.” If you are interested in learning more, please contact one of the leaders (Christine or John), or simply com to one of our meetings.

Next week s Ministry of the Week is Quilting Ministry. If you would like your ministry to be the Ministry of the Week, please have your ministry head send an email to Michelle Schultz at [email protected].

¡Gracias!
