THE CHRISTMAS DAY FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Theme: Look Our Savior comes The shepherds in today’s gospel, they too saw only a child, just an ordinary child. A new-born baby in the arms of his mother, a simple woman. The house was not even a house, only a shelter in the rocks where they were protected from the rain and the wind. There was nothing extraordinary in what the shepherds saw. This is what Paul says in the second reading. He tells us that today “the kindness and love of God are revealed.” In other words, God’s kindness and love are made visible, they are shown for us to see in that new-born child. Since the beginning of the world, this is exactly what people had wished for: “if only we could see God!” They wanted to know who God really is, how he looks upon us. Is He kind and loving, or is He sometimes angry and ready to punish us? Today God answers this wish. He shows Himself to us. This is what the word reveal means. And what do we see of God? His kindness and His love, this is what he reveals of Himself in that small child. If God had come with great power and majesty, we would have been frightened. We would not have dared to come near Him. But now, it is he Himself who comes near to us. He comes, not with the power of a ruler, or the glory of a king. He comes to us as a simple child, a new-born baby. So, today we are by the prophet Isaiah in these in these words: “Look, your Savior comes.” We are called to look and to see, to see as the shepherd did to see more than just an ordinary child. We look at a baby we are to see God become man; we look at poverty - we are to see all the riches of God; we look at weakness - we are to see the strength of God; we look at helplessness - we are to see the power of God; we look at a simple thing: the birth of a child - we are to see the most extraordinary event in our human history God has become man. We have said that we are called to look and to see. To look, not only in the crib, for there we will find only statues or pictures of God. To look, not only in Bethlehem, for there we will find only the memory of Jesus’ life on earth. But to look in our world today, in our own lives. It is there, in our world and in our lives, that our Savior comes. It is here that he is “God-with -us.” Perhaps you ask yourself on this Christmas day: Where should I look to see God? There are indeed many places and situations were can we see Him, if only we open our eyes. In the faithful love of a husband for his wife or a wife for her husband, he is there showing Himself a faithful God. In the love of parents for their children, He is there showing us His fatherly love. continue on page 4

In the support and help that friends give to one another, He is there showing Himself our friend, our helper. In the comfort and consolation that neighbors can bring to each other; He is there showing Himself as our consoler. In all these situations, God shows Himself as “God with us.” He is there knowing for sure that our savior has come, for we experience in our own lives His kindness and His love. During these days of Christmas season, when we look at the crib, we recall what happened on the first Christmas. We receive Christmas greetings and on the cards, we see the picture of Mary and Joseph and the new-born child. Or, perhaps at night time, we gather together as family to pray before a small crib in our home. At such moments, let us try to see beyond those pictures, to see the real face of God. Let us see God's kindness and love for us, kindness and love that he often shows through people around us. Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year to all!
