ou’re pregnant. Congratulations! And while you’re excited about the arrival of your new bundle of joy, something you weren’t expecting may be growing as well. Hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can develop during pregnancy, typically during the third trimester or at delivery. During the third trimester, the weight of the baby pushing down can cause hemorrhoids to enlarge. Hormonal changes can also be a factor, as hemorrhoids can have estrogen receptors. During delivery, the intense pressure from pushing makes hemorrhoids flare up, sometimes severely. After delivery hemorrhoids often settle down on their own, usually within a month or two. But if symptoms persist for longer than that, treatment may be needed. Treatment cannot be done during pregnancy, so a woman that already has hemorrhoids should get treated before pregnancy. This will help to minimize her chances of developing worsening symptoms

during pregnancy. I have two treatments designed to safely eliminate hemorrhoids. One reduces the blood flow that feeds the hemorrhoids, improving inflammation and causing them to David shrink. The other is better Gutman, MD suited to removing larger hemorrhoids. Both take just a few seconds to do. Since they are performed in an area with no nerve endings, they can be administered right in the comfort of my office without anesthesia. There is virtually no pain, no prep needed, there are no major restrictions, and you don’t have to take time off of work. Consultations are free of charge, and our procedures are covered by insurance.

ecause she’s always on the leading edge of innovation when it comes to aesthetic rejuvenation, Dr. Laurel Matthews, a board-certified physician with more than 35 years of practice experience and the owner of Dr. Laurel’s PRP Bar, offers a revolutionary way to lift the skin on the neck, jawline, mid-face area, and to fill in under the eyes. Her exclusive Ultra-V Lift instantly transforms these areas without the surgery, exorbitant cost, or weeks of downtime. The Ultra-V Lift incorporates PCL (polycaprolactone) absorbable suture thread delivered via needle under the skin to instantly provide lift to the treatment area. “For eliminating sagging and drooping on the neck, I place a thread, hold it in place as I remove the needle, then pull the thread into the desired location, lifting the skin,” Dr. Laurel explains. “The results are immediate, dramatic and last up to two years.” “With our Ultra-V Lift, the use of PCL threads is key,” she explains. “They are the latest monofilament suspension threads of synthetic origin and regenerate collagen for a longer period than other threads.” After about three to four months, the PCL thread is naturally absorbed into the skin, and, in its place, collagen has grown

to maintain the effect. “This is the only non-surgical way to lift a sagging neck and jawline,” Dr. Laurel notes. “The result is a very natural-looking mini-lift and there is no downtime.” Jowls that used to require surgical intervention are now eliminated in 30 minutes. A sagging turkey neck and under eye bags can be abolished, too. And, when you walk out the door, the transformation is immediate. No waiting for surgery scars to heal, and no missed time from work or other interests. “It’s amazing how much lift you get with the Ultra-V threads,” she comments. “People recognize a V-shaped jawline to represent youth and vitality. Now I can take you there without the pain, expense and downtime of a surgical face-lift. My patients are raving about this procedure.” Schedule a complimentary consultation by calling 216-245-6682. The office is at 3439 W. Brainard Rd., Suite 107, in Woodmere, near Beachwood. To learn more and see additional before and after photos, visit DrLaurelsPRPBar.com. Until May 15, 2023, save $250 on an Ultra-V Neck-Lift, with the mention of this story.

by Adam Cook or many of us, the garage is our front door, and passing through on the way in and out can be a harrowing journey. Although it might be our home’s primary entrance, it’s the last thing on the list for spring cleaning. “People feel frustrated when the time comes to clean out the ugly mess winter left because it usually means tackling more than a few months of buildup,” says Mike Padden, owner of Encore Garage Ohio. “Often, it’s years of neglect and accumulated junk as the garage turned into a domestic dumping ground. It’s enough to stress anyone out.” Enough is enough. Bikes with flat tires, balls that don’t bounce, bags of golf clubs gathering dust, outgrown scooters and a Slip ’N Slide past its prime, tools, ladders, snow shovels, bulky bottled water stacks and unpacked moving boxes all need a new place to call home. If any of these usual culprits Mike and his crew uncover describe your own garage, it’s time for a transformation. Add making your garage into something worthy of the rest of your home to the top of your to-do list. “Take a look at the garage floor, the unsightly stains and areas where salt has eaten away at the concrete,” Mike says. “We can restore it, sealing it with our Encore Flexcore polyaspartic coating system, so there’s no distracting eyesore every time you pass through the garage.” The state-of-the-art coating makes concrete better than new and comes in various colors. “The cost to put in another concrete floor

is through the roof,” Mike says. “Our Encore Flexcore polyaspartic coating is economical and adds value to your home. From floor to ceiling, Encore Garage uses its know-how and system of heavy-duty cabinets, spacious work surface, sturdy organization systems, and showroom-quality lighting to reclaim and redefine the space, reinvigorating garages to their rightful places as a natural extensions of the home.

“We match every job to the homeowner’s needs and personality—building a storage area and workbench for the resident gearhead or wrapping cabinets around a bigscreen TV and emblazoning a Guardians logo on the wall for the sports fanatic,” Mike says. “If someone likes to garden, we can make a custom workstation to exercise a green thumb, rain or shine.” All Encore Garage’s organizational systems are custom-made. “Custom doesn’t mean costly,” Mike says. “It means we design with the homeowner to deliver the optimal organization system. We’re not pulling cabinets off the shelf like a big box store, and we mount—never hang— our cabinets 4 to 6 inches from the floor for easy cleaning. They’re what I call ‘garage-tuff’ and can withstand moisture and extreme swings in temperature. Doing the floor and remodeling the garage is usually less costly than remodeling a half-bath.” As tax season coincides with spring cleaning, it bears mentioning that transferring the momentary joy of getting a return into a garage worthy of the rest of

Top 10 Garage Clutter Culprits

The technicians from EncoreGarage have come up with an amusing checklist of common items you will often find in the average Northeast Ohio garage. How many do you have? 1. Bikes with fl at tires.

(more bikes than people living in the home)

2. Golf clubs, so many golf clubs! 3. Water bottles in bulk. (Can anyone possibly be this thirsty?)

4. A minimum of three ladders, all the same size. 5. Defl ated balls. Too many to count. 6. Scooters, skateboards, and skates, oh my! 7. Tools, tools, tools. 8. A menagerie of defunct plastic water games, such as the Slip ’N Slide that has neither slipped nor slid for many years. 9. A plethora of snow shovels. (one for every member in the house)

The cornerstone of Exactly’s home-selling process is a flat-rate fee structure. Real estate agent Aaron Peterson for Exactly can handle everything from the initial in-home consultation to delivering the keys to the buyer for a $4,800 package fee—instead of a percentage of the sale.

This is how you sell your home and keep more of your money.

F

by Laura Briedis or local real estate agent Aaron Peterson, it’s all about giving back and making an impact. In addition to volunteering around town and spearheading charitable endeavors, he also wants to give back a better profit from the sale of a home to the homeowner. As one of Exactly’s top real estate agents, he helps homeowners save money with flat-rate fees—$8906 on average, to be precise. “That ($8906) is the average savings our Hudson clients put back in their pockets by using our flat-rate model instead of the traditional percentage model (based on an Ohio study done that shows a 5.8 percent average commission),” Aaron says. “An extra $8906 in their pocket to be used for their kids’ college. An extra $8906 in their pocket to be used for their next down payment. An extra $8906 in their pocket to be used for paying down debt. An extra $8906 in their pocket to be used for things that matter. That’s making true impact.” “My goal is to help homeowners make the greatest amount of money from the sale of their home, sell their home as quickly as possible, and do it with as little stress as possible,” says Aaron, who

volunteers every Tuesday evening at a local nonprofit that offers equine therapy, and once a month serving coffee and donuts at The Chapel in Green. “I go above and beyond to help my clients get top dollar for their property while saving them money with our flat fee,” he says. “There are few times in our lives when we can capture large chunks of money, and selling a home is definitely one of those times. I love seeing people build generational wealth and I love even more seeing people keep that wealth when they go to sell.” The cornerstone of Exactly’s home selling process is a flat-rate fee structure.

The company handles everything from the initial in-home consultation to delivering the keys to the buyer for a $4,800 package fee—instead of a percentage of the sale. “Our fees are transparent, so the homeowner knows exactly what is due to us,” says Aaron. “And if the buyer has a real estate agent, then there could be other fees you negotiate with their real estate agent.” “Flat-fee pricing is a fairer process,” comments Aaron. “Selling a home that is worth $500,000 takes the same amount of work as selling a $200,000 home, so I don’t think it is fair to charge so much more commission.” With Exactly, the home-selling process is simple. Aaron meets with the homeowner to discuss goals, provides an in-depth comparative market analysis,

does a walk-though to make sure everything is ready in the home, creates a marketing plan and lists the home. And when it comes to accepting bids, the buyer submits an offer using the proprietary software developed by Exactly. “The sellers will know down to the penny how much money they will get from a prospective offer, thus helping with our negotiation strategy,” says Aaron. Best Foot Forward Behind the astute real estate agent, you will find a very personable guy. Aaron takes to heart the mantra “work hard, play hard.” While hard work underlines the character of a person, what someone does in their free time gives you a better glimpse into their personality. And for Aaron, his dynamic, can-do persona parlays to all he does in life. When he is not helping clients buy and sell real estate, he enjoys boating, scuba diving, snowboarding, corralling horses, and going on outdoor adventures in his 1988 Volkswagen Vanagon with his cat, Smokey. His real passion, though, is traveling. He has visited 35 countries with extended stays in Bali and the Philippines, and he currently is in the process of getting his pilot’s license. Aaron brings this same sense of adventure and energy to his job and makes selling a home—which often can be very stressful—more fun. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Born in Georgia, he still has lots of that southern charm and hospitable nature, and now it’s mixed with the Midwest’s strong work ethic. It’s the perfect balance to be successful in the real estate market. It also is that something different that makes him stand out from all the other real estate agents in town. An expert in the local real estate market, Aaron resides in the Portage Lakes area, where in the summer you can find him paddleboarding every morning on the lake, and at times speeding things up Jet Skiing or slowing it down relaxing on a pontoon boat. With a business degree from Liberty University, he brings a strong business acumen to the real estate arena. “I have been in the real estate industry for 20-plus years selling homes, investing in homes and rehabbing homes, so I know all the different aspects of real estate,” says Aaron. “Being a real estate investor, I understand the importance of making money when selling a large asset like a house. My goal when selling a client’s

house is always to see them make as much money as possible and at the same time save as much money as possible. Doing both without sacrificing integrity.”

“I go above and beyond to

O

by Laura Briedis ne in five Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime, as more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. The good news, however, is that skin cancer is preventable and treatable. In fact, the five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 99%. Leading the fight against skin cancer is Apex Dermatology. With 13 offices in Northeast Ohio, spanning from Avon to Ashtabula and down south to Canton, Apex’s skilled dermatologists and Mohs surgeons are helping to prevent and cure cancer. “We are transforming lives through healthy skin,” says Apex Dermatology founder Dr. Jorge Garcia-Zuazaga, who was a U.S. Marine Corps flight surgeon and completed his dermatologic surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School before starting his own dermatology practice in 2011. “Our three fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons have performed a combined 70,000 Mohs surgeries over the past decade.” The gold standard for skin cancer treatment, Mohs surgery is a meticulous technique where the surgeon cuts a small margin of the cancer and processes the tissue in the office lab to look at the skin cells to determine if the cancer is all removed, cutting off small layers one at a time until

it is gone. The procedure usually takes less than two hours and is done in the comfort of an office setting. “Mohs surgery gives you the best cure rate while removing the least amount of healthy skin and minimizing scars,” explains Dr. Alison Durham, a Mohs surgeon who joined Apex last year after working on faculty at the University of Michigan for nine years. Wherever you live in Northeast Ohio, there is an Apex office within a half-hour drive and patients can usually schedule surgery within days.

At Apex Dermatology, there is a SPOTcheck program that guarantees a same-day appointment for any patient with a suspicious lesion.

Apex Dermatology has 13 locations to serve Northeast Ohio. To schedule an appointment in your area, call 833-279- SKIN (7546) or visit ApexSkin.com.

“Our three fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons have performed a combined 70,000 Mohs surgeries over the past decade.” “Unlike most other cancers that are not detected until symptoms arise, skin cancer is visual so we can catch it early,” says Dr. Patrick Killian, one of the Mohs surgeons on staff. “That is what I love about dermatology. Instead of managing a chronic problem, we can actually cure it. The vast majority of skin cancers are easily treated if found early.” According to Dr. Durham, patients should do a skin self-exam once a month at home and have an annual cancer screening in the office. Though the doctors have a trained eye and know what to look for, patients also can help detect suspicious spots by watching

“When patients are in a doctor’s office and hear the ‘c’ word, they usually get anxious, so our job is to reassure them and let them know we have performed thousands of procedures with good outcomes,” Dr. Durham says.

Referred to as “Melanoma Monday,” this American Academy of Dermatology national campaign raises awareness of the symptoms, causes and prevention of skin cancer every year on the first Monday in May. This year, that’s May 1. by Derek Cannon, Service Manager P.K. Wadsworth Heating & Cooling

L

ooking forward to Memorial Day weekend? I know I am. Many consider this the beginning of summer. The first weekend of the year to be spent outdoors with family and friends. However, the last phone call anyone wants to make Memorial Day weekend is to me, the AC guy. In my 10 years as a heating and cooling service technician, one constant I’ve observed is that the hotter it is outside, the busier I am going to be. The warmer it is outside, the harder the AC needs to work—and the more likely it is to breakdown. Last summer, I was so busy that customers who had AC breakdowns waited up to a week for service. As a consumer myself, if I had to wait a week for my AC to get fixed and it was 90 degrees outside, I’d think about finding another contractor. But one week was still the fastest turnaround in the area, so everyone waited. Yet, this can be avoided. Annual maintenance of your heating and cooling system helps to prevent many common and costly breakdowns at inopportune times. That’s where the Preferred Service Plan (PS Plan) from P.K. Wadsworth can help. PS Plan members are ensured of same- or next-day service. No matter how hot or cold it is outside, customers who are PS Plan members get a

fast pass to the front of the line if their system breaks down. There are many other benefits for service plan members, such as two annual complimentary tune ups of your heating and cooling system to minimize the risk of breakdowns and extra expenses, 15 percent off any repair work, 50 percent off air filter replacements, and more. Regular service keeps your system operating at its peak, helps to extend its life, and often maintains the manufacturer warranty. A truly worthwhile program for homeowners. Working for P.K. Wadsworth has been awesome since I joined the team four years ago. I started as a technician and today as service manager I oversee the entire team of techs. We ensure customers are taken care of properly. Whether your system needs a tune-up, repair, or it’s time for a new one, keep us in mind. For more information or to schedule an appointment call P.K. by Laura Briedis s Stewart’s Caring Place celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, it has remained steadfast to its original mission: providing supportive services and programs, in a relaxed and caring environment, all at no cost, to individuals and families touched by cancer Just like the butterfly that embodies this cancer wellness center—symbolizing transformation and hope—and is prominent everywhere from the painting in the lobby to the outdoor sculpture and in its logo, Stewart’s Caring Place has also evolved over the years. “Come see what we are all about,” says President & CEO Jeannine Marks, who has been with the organization since its inception, first as a volunteer. “We consider ourselves a resource of wraparound non-medical services that not only benefit those with cancer, but also their families and caregivers. We take care of people of any age, stage or phase of cancer.” This second home to many families affected by cancer offers support groups, group fitness classes, holistic care,

beauty workshops, cooking demonstrations, as well as art and music programs. When Mimi Surloff founded Stewart’s Caring Place in 2003 to honor her late husband and help other families going through their own cancer journeys, she had no idea the far-reaching impact her nonprofit would have. Today the wellness center serves thousands of families in 36 counties and offers more than 150 programs at no cost to those affected by cancer. Take Advantage of Ongoing Services Open Monday through Friday, the wellness center has something for everyone—from a wig room with 500-plus wigs and scarves, to a demonstration kitchen where you can learn to cook nutritional meals, to a healing arts suite offering reiki, massage and meditation. All-encompassing services also include support groups, financial and legal consultations, and a food pantry for anyone who is facing food insecurities. “Some of our most popular programs are cooking classes,

First on the calendar is the Spring Art Show “The Kaleidoscope,” which is on display April 21 through August 8. “Anyone who has been impacted by cancer was invited to submit artwork along with their story of why this artwork resonates with them,” says Sarah Vojtek, vice president of Stewart’s Caring Place and a cancer survivor. “We have upwards of 90 pieces in different mediums that are displayed in our hallways. We invite everyone to come check out the art show and our center.” To commemorate the actual founding date on June 3, Stewart’s will host a Family Celebration for anyone impacted by cancer, with a lineup of events throughout the day to thank the community for all its support over the past two decades. The center will also host Kids Summer Camp for ages 4 to 12. There will be a weeklong session each month in June, July and August. And Stewart’s two annual fundraising events—the Annual Hope Walk on May 6 and the Butterfly Gala on August

This year’s celebration will honor Founder Mimi Surloff and look back at 20 years of service. “We are fully funded by the generosity of this community,” says Sarah. “We rely solely on foundations and grants, as well as donations from individuals and organizations.” Stewart’s Caring Place is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In partnership with Carson Higgins Memorial Foundation and local Girl Scouts, the library is being adorned with a mural of the Grand Canyon, as interpreted by Girl Scout Troop #90186 which is made up of 8th graders from St. Hilary School and Carson’s four brothers and parents who all have added strokes of color to the artwork. Understand Your Options | HealthMarkets Insurance Agency

Is it time to choose Medicare?

by Doug Johnson, Licensed Insurance Agent HealthMarkets Insurance Agency

H

ow do you know when it’s time to choose Medicare? If you’re retired, the answer might be obvious. But if you’re one of the people aged 65 and over (or if you’re within six months of your 65th birthday) and are still working while participating in your employer-sponsored healthcare plan, you may be less sure. It’s a common misconception that in order to participate in Medicare you must be collecting Social Security. The fact is, the two are not connected. Another point of confusion can often be that if a person is still working but is of Medicare-eligible age, they have to wait to participate in a Medicare plan until they are retired. The fact is, if you are eligible for Medicare, regardless of your employment status, you can, and sometimes should, opt to make a change. Things to consider when comparing Medicare to your employer-sponsored healthcare coverage include deductibles, maximum out-of-pocket costs, medications, access to care and premiums.

You may be carrying other people on your healthcare plan at work. What will happen to them if you go on Medicare? When you sit down with me for a no-cost review, we’ll go over your individual situation to Doug determine if staying on Johnson your employer-sponsored plan or moving to Medicare is the best fit for your needs. And we’ll talk about options for anyone you carry on your current plan. Sometimes staying put makes the most sense. Sometimes opting for Medicare is the better move. Whichever way the cards fall, you can feel confident that you’ve made the right choice for your particular situation. And, as always, my guidance is free of charge.

e all know it’s important to keep our gutter systems flowing smoothly, but cleaning them is a dirty, dangerous job, one we should not be doing ourselves. But it’s also difficult to schedule gutter cleaning until you notice the dreaded overflows. Now, The Gutter Boys—a team of fullservice, gutter specialists—has the solution: subscribe. “We offer a gutter cleaning subscription service, so you never have to worry about it again,” explains company founder Anthony Alberino. “We show up and take care of it on a regular basis.” Most subscriptions include two to four cleanings per year and subscribers’ gutters take priority during scheduling. The subscription model is such a simple yet innovative solution to an age-old problem, that homeowners are “signing up like crazy.” Whether you choose a single gutter cleaning or subscribe, it’s best to leave it to the pros. “Our entire team is experienced and trained in proper cleaning techniques as well as ladder safety,” Anthony says. “We know the ins and outs of gutter systems and can clean them safely.” Covering Your Gutters Many homeowners prefer covering their gutters rather than relying on regular

cleaning, and The Gutter Boys has you covered there, too. As a local company, not a national franchise with a single product, they can recommend and install the system that’s right for you, including their best-in-class micro-mesh gutter guard. “Unfortunately, poorly designed and manufactured gutter guards have a high fail rate,” Anthony says. “Our system, however, has a lifetime warranty. And when we install it, two-thirds of the time we are taking down someone else’s failed guards.” The Gutter Boys system features: • A high-flow, stainless steel micro-mesh featuring a raised S-curve that allows for the self-shedding of debris. • A vertical louvered frame that improves drainage, discouraging the growth of algae. • A lightweight, aluminum frame that won’t warp or add extra weight to the system. • The cover is attached to the fascia, not the shingles, so it can’t void your roof warranty. Exterior Window Cleaning The Gutter Boys has just introduced a revolutionary way to clean exterior windows—with no ladder and no squeegee. “It’s called water-fed pole window cleaning,” Anthony explains. “We use a threestage water purification system to eliminate all particles in the water that could leave spots or residue.”

The three stages in the purification process are 1) carbon filtration, which traps impurities such as chlorine, sediment and organic matter; 2) reverse osmosis, which uses high pressure to force the water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove smaller particles like minerals, bacteria, and viruses; and 3) deionization, which removes smaller minerals and ions. One tank exchanges positively charged ions—such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium—for hydrogen ions, while a second tank exchanges negatively charged ions—such as chloride, sulfate, and nitrate—for hydroxide ions. The hydrogen and hydroxide ions combine to form pure water, leaving no spots on your windows. The Gutter Boys is headquartered at 1090 West Bagley Road, in Berea. They have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and are bonded and insured. Call 440-671-7657 to schedule a free on-site consultation and estimate or visit TheGutterBoys.com for more information. They also offer 12 months same-ascash financing.

hen it comes to remodeling your kitchen, there is one option you should seriously consider: refacing. The industry has undergone a remarkable transformation in the past 20 years, led, in part, by innovative entrepreneurs like Jason Hicks of Northeast Ohio’s American Wood Reface. “Homeowners are really starting to grasp the benefits of refacing,” Jason says. “We offer total kitchen transformations for as little as half the cost of a full tear-out, and we complete most projects in 7-8 days— instead of 7-8 weeks. You end up with better quality cabinets and a gorgeous kitchen with all of the modern amenities, but without going over your budget.” Refacing is an especially good alternative if you are reasonably satisfied with the layout of your kitchen. That said, the professional carpenters at American Wood Reface also extend cabinets to the ceiling, make modifications to fit larger appliances, and add islands and peninsulas. “The time and money you save can

go toward things that are really important,” Jason says, “like appliance upgrades, new countertops, flooring, an undermount sink, and lighting. Undercabinet lighting is Jason says it’s becoming extremely a good idea to popular. Not only is it replace bottom beautiful aesthetically, cabinets with but it eliminates drawer banks. shadows cast on work surfaces by your ceiling lights.” Converting bottom cabinets to drawer banks has also become hugely popular. “We recommend drawer banks to almost everyone,” Jason says. “The days of stooping down to get to the back of a cabinet are over—and good riddance.” In spite of its name, American Wood Reface also installs new countertops (including quartz and granite) and gorgeous tile backsplashes. And unlike many companies that cover the market with “good, better, best” options, Jason offers only one option: the best. “We’re affordable, yes, but we don’t do ‘cheap.’” Jason explains. “We use only high-quality materials, including new solid-

hardwood doors and premium 1/4-inch solid wood facing. Plus, our craftsmen are the finest in the industry.” Refacing is also an environmentally sound alternative—your existing cabinets do not end up in a landfill and there is no wasted energy manufacturing new ones. The company is also being recognized by the industry. In 2020—and for the fifth time—American Wood Reface took home a coveted award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)—2020 Regional CotY Award Winner/Residential Kitchen Under $30,000. American Wood Reface brings the showroom to you and doesn’t charge for an in-home consultation and estimate. And they handle everything so you can avoid contacting five different contractors. “Our number one goal is to give our clients a high-quality finished project,” Jason says. “But beyond that, we are also driven to make the process fast, affordable and fun. There’s absolutely no reason you cannot have a kitchen you absolutely love.” American Wood Reface serves all of Northeast Ohio and beyond. For a free, noobligation estimate, call 1-800-645-4594. Home imPRoVemenT | How to stay off the ladder and stop cleaning gutters

Gutter Protection Backed By Science Gutter Cover Company’s Gutter Topper is scientifically engineered to withstand the harshest of weather conditions and keep your gutters free flowing forever. The best part? It’s made right here in Ohio.

BEFORE

WITH GUTTER TOPPER Gutter Cover Company’s Gutter Topper is installed over your existing gutters and comes in 14 colors. Plus, it features a lifetime transferable performance warranty, so you can put away the ladder...forever.

by Jim Carbone, Owner Gutter Cover Company

O

ne of the most dangerous jobs a homeowner can do is cleaning gutters. Each year in the United States more than 164,000 people are treated in the emergency room due to falling from a ladder. And most of those falls are from less than 10 feet. The best thing you can do to avoid becoming a tragic statistic is to put the ladder away and cover your gutters so you never have to clean them again. But it’s important to choose the right gutter cover. At Gutter Cover Company, we’ve been installing gutter covers since 1998 and we’ve seen firsthand what works and what doesn’t. For example, in most cases, screens, meshes and filters still need to be cleaned, so they do nothing to achieve your goal of staying off the ladder. Our Gutter Topper system— manufactured here in Ohio—doesn’t rely on a filter. It relies on science. How It Works The key to Gutter Topper’s ability to handle water yet repel leaves and debris lies in its patented design. As you may recall from science class, water clings to the surface on which it travels. This is called

“surface tension” and it causes water to cling to Gutter Topper’s rounded “nose.” The water follows the curve of the nose and is deposited in slots at the bottom of the system. Thanks to the nature of surface tension, rain water goes where it belongs, inside the gutters. Leaves and debris, on the other hand, won’t follow the curve. They shed from Gutter Topper’s sloped surface and slide harmlessly to the ground. As a result, Gutter Topper prevents damaging overflows, prolongs gutter life, and protects your gutters from snow, leaves, seed pods, maple spinners, oak tassels, twigs, pine needles—and critters. Handling Severe Ohio Weather Gutter Topper is certified to resist winds of up to 110 mph (the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane) and handle downpours of up to 22 inches per hour or a whopping 528 inches per day. If that ever happens, you won’t need gutter covers. You’ll need an ark. According to the National Weather Service, Cleveland’s daily rainfall record is just 4.59 inches, set on July 7, 1996.

Getting Started Northeast Ohio’s heavy spring rains have come early this year so now is the time to get started. Our team will clean, tighten, reseal, and properly align your gutters before installing Gutter Topper. You will be provided with a lifetime transferable warranty that ensures your gutters will be free flowing forever. And if your gutters need replacing, we can install new seamless gutters. Prevent Ice Dams with Heater Cap In addition to Gutter Topper, we also offer Heater Cap, a patented heat-dispersing plate installed either in your gutters or on top of the Gutter Topper. Our self-regulated heat cables maintain your gutters and downspouts at a temperature just above freezing. So when heat escapes through your roof, turning snow into water, Heater Cap keeps that water flowing, preventing it from freezing solid and forming damaging ice and ice dams. The system is safe and is wired directly to your breaker box. You can control it with a switch conveniently located inside the warmth of your home.

Heater Cap can be installed over your existing gutters and over many existing gutter guards. And unlike unsightly, oldfashioned zig-zag wires across your rooftop, Heater Cap blends right in with your gutters and gutter guards. Designed for problem areas, Heater Cap can also be added at a later date. This allows homeowners to heat just the areas that need it instead of all the gutters. We’re a local, family-owned company specializing in gutter protection in Northeast Ohio for 25 years—with a proven track record of satisfied customers. We look forward to serving you and your family, too. For more information or to schedule your free estimate, call 440-366-0688 or 1-800-335-4367, or visit GutterGuard1.com.

Save $300 Now! Schedule a free estimate by May 10, 2023 and receive a $300 discount on the purchase of the Gutter Topper system by mentioning this offer. Additional discounts are available for seniors and veterans.

The resurgence of Grolleau

verything old is new again, especially when it comes to wine. The Grolleau grape is an ancient French grape finding new life with millennials due to new and innovative techniques in winemaking. “The Grolleau grape variety is only found in the Loire Valley of France and is widely used in sparkling wines,” Jim Sperk of the Northern Ohio Wine Guild says. “The name of the grape is derived from the French word grolle, meaning ‘crow,’ and reflects the dark, almost black color of the berry. Despite its dark color, its thin skin renders it low in tannins.” Jim says that the grape has been used for many years exclusively for rosé wines and is often blended with the Gamay grape. The best of these wines come from the Anjou area of France. “Recent winemaking methods using the Grolleau grape have resulted in light red wines that are low in alcohol with a vibrant acidity, making it good for everyday drinking,” Jim says. “For those reasons, new wine drinkers are drawn to these red wines that are a great choice

Experts suggest chilling it first for a half-hour or so to get the best flavor out of a Grolleau wine.” Flavors and aromas of Grolleau wines tend toward All three versions of sour cherries, the Grolleau grape— the white, rosé and red watermelon, citrus —are great initiations to and a bit of herbs new wine drinkers. with a hint of smoke, depending on whether you’re enjoying a Grolleau Noir, Grolleau Blanc or Grolleau Gris as a rosé or a sparkling wine. “All three versions of the grape—the white, rosé and red—are great initiations to new wine drinkers,” Jim says. “You might have a problem finding many examples of Grolleau other than the rosé. The good news is that demand has increased, and more producers are getting into the marketplace.” For information on the Northern Ohio Wine Guild, contact Jim Sperk at [email protected].

Korean BBQ Meatloaf 1 T soy sauce 1 T coconut palm sugar (or substitute brown sugar) 4 T rice vinegar by Felicia Vargo

G

et ready for a flavor-packed twist on classic meatloaf with this Korean BBQ-inspired recipe.

Korean BBQ Meatloaf Prep time: 10 minutes Rest time: 30 minutes Cook time: 60 minutes Makes: 1 meatloaf Serves: 8

Ingredients For Meatloaf: 1 ½ lb. ground beef 1 lb. sweet pork 1 C sweet onion, chopped 2 T garlic, minced 2 C panko 2 eggs 2 T fermented gochujang 1 T roasted red chili paste 1 T Korean chili flakes 1 T galangal (or substitute dried ginger) 1 T coconut palm sugar (or substitute brown sugar) 2 T soy sauce For Glaze: 10 oz. apricot jelly 2 T Sialang honey (or substitute local honey) 3 T kecap manis (or substitute ketchup) 8 T fermented gochujang 1 T Korean chili flakes 2 T sesame oil 1 t galangal (or substitute dried ginger)

Here’s How 1. In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients for the meatloaf and mix until well combined. Rest the meatloaf mixture for 30 minutes or until the panko has softened. 2. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, whisk together the ingredients for the glaze sauce. Separate about 3-4 tablespoons into a second bowl and set aside. 3. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spread the meatloaf mixture into a greased loaf pan and mound over the top. Brush 3-4 tablespoons of the reserved glaze on top of the meatloaf. Bake the meatloaf for 40-45 minutes, until the internal temperature reaches 140°F. 4. While the meatloaf is cooking, pour the rest of the glaze into a sauce pot over medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer and reduce for 20-25 minutes, until the sauce has thickened significantly. 5. When the meatloaf reaches an internal temp of 145°F, pour the glaze reduction over the top of the meatloaf. Return to the oven and continue to bake until the internal temperature of the meatloaf reaches 160°F. 6. Rest the meatloaf at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to cutting to fully set the meatloaf. Sprinkle on sesame seeds and green onions for garnish. Serve warm and enjoy! THOUGHT the awesome achievement of landing on the moon—utterly filled us with hope about the future with its flying cars and enhanced leisure time. Today, we worry about social media destroying our mental health and artificial intelligence annihilating us all. Shoot, I’m doing it yet again, comparing yesterday and today.

But there is hope. The collective brain we call the internet has all the world’s knowledge at our fingertips, so we no longer view intelligence as just knowing stuff through memorization. Now we can reward those who use information in creative and innovative ways. That’s going to lead to greater and greater innovation in every field—from science and technology to entertainment. The internet is still the Wild West. We have yet to figure out how to mine all the promise of the Information Age out of the dark rock of misinformation, but I believe we’ll get there, or, rather, our children will. The right libel suit here, the right damage suit there, the right common disaster triggered by the internet, and we’ll discover a balance we can all live with. It’s what Americans do. It’s what humans do. We work together. Whoa, right there, did that just sound like Mike Brady? [email protected]

very month when I sit down to write this column, my mind looks to the past for inspiration—elements of my childhood in the deep South, the glory days of the 1960s and ’70s, and comparing yesterday and today. I have to work hard to stay focused on the present, to write a column on artificial intelligence, for example, which I did back in January. This month, I was going to write about how there are no longer any good dads on television like there were in the heyday of Ward Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver and Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch, and how TV dads became either self-absorbed simpletons or bumbling buffoons about the same time Homer Simpson arrived on the scene. But after some research, I learned I was wrong. There are still lots of dutiful, loving dads on TV. I just don’t watch those shows. Beyond the television (a device my own father use to call “the peep hole into paradise”), today’s real-life dads seem pretty responsible, sharing child-rearing duties far more equally with moms than in my parents’ day. Instead of passing out cigars in the maternity ward, today’s dads are on the front lines in the delivery room. They take their kids grocery shopping and drive carpools. “Soccer dads” are almost as common as “soccer moms.” Almost. See, I’m doing it again—comparing yesterday and today. It’s hard not to, given that I have 61 years in the rearview mirror and far fewer ahead of me. But I don’t want to become that guy, the old man who talks incessantly about the past, repeats “back in my day,” has never been on Instagram, and who doesn’t know who Billie Eilish is. Oops, I may already be that guy. Of course, it’s difficult to discuss the present without wading into politics, and Mimi won’t stand for that. She understands that her magazine is a guest in our readers’ homes, so we work to keep politics out of it. The stars of the show within our pages are the quality, locally owned businesses we feature. Perhaps I’d be better off writing about the future, which I do not believe will be as dystopian as we all seem to fear. That said, I don’t recall any TV dads being worried about the future 50 years ago. Living on the cusp of the personal computer revolution—and using microwave ovens and automatic dishwashers for the first time while standing in the shadow of
