Notre Dame College Prep 2021-2022 Annual Report 1

(PHOTO) Early in 2022, we put out a call for NDCP alumni to send in a photo and let us know where ND took them in life. The response was incredible and the “Because of ND” photo series campaign was born and became the theme for our spring appeal. The response from our alumni reaffirmed for us that there is no one kind of Don. Dons are engineers, contractors, teachers, doctors, marketers, surgeons, business owners, journeymen, authors, problem solvers, music makers and more. They are men who are dedicated to their profession, family, community and service. Every gift to our Annual Appeal (www.nddons.org/annualappeal) makes Notre Dame College Prep stronger and helps provide an opportunity for future Dons to receive the same outstanding, Holy Cross education.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Notre Dame Family - As I reflect on the past two years, I want to thank our alumni and friends of Notre Dame for your unwavering support of Notre Dame and the Dons. When Notre Dame was in need of financial support during the pandemic, you answered the call in so many inspiring ways. Because of you, our enrollment has seen considerable growth as you were there to support families in need and stepped up to help prospective Dons who dreamed of attending NDCP. Notre Dame is the BIGGEST all-boys high school in the state of Illinois because of the generosity of so many that have invested in our Holy Cross mission to educate the hearts and the minds of our Dons. There is no looking back! Notre Dame was the leader during the pandemic and we will continue to offer young men the best possible education and high school experience in Chicagoland. It is what we do BEST! Because of you, Notre Dame set school fundraising records during the pandemic despite not being able to gather in person. Your financial support helped us to update our beautiful 28-acre campus with many campus improvements, to provide needed services and opportunities for our students, and to ensure we retained the best faculty and staff in the country. The best possible investment that you can make is in the education of a young man at Notre Dame College Prep . Because of you, Notre Dame is in a strong financial position. The momentum and pride that is evident on our campus each day is something we should all be proud of. The last two years were filled with challenges, but it brought our Notre Dame Family closer together. So many alumni reached out to ask me how they could help their alma mater, and for this I and our school will forever be grateful. This is the time to come back and visit campus and support our events, programs, and teams. Because of you, the future is so bright for Notre Dame College Prep! We are blessed and grateful for your trust, passion, and support! Campus Happenings - Summer of 2022 There are busy summers and then there is the Summer of 2022! There was a lot of work and activity everywhere across our beautiful campus. I am beyond excited to share with you this BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: NOTRE DAME COLLEGE PREP’S CLASSROOMS ARE NOW COMPLETELY AIR-CONDITIONED! The HVAC Initiative was a major investment to improve ventilation and temperature control in our classrooms! I am grateful to our school leadership, business office, maintenance team, and the contractors who worked tirelessly all summer. This will prove to be one of the best investments ever made on our campus. We have also put significant effort into improving the aesthetics in our hallways with a major painting of all of our lockers and the area above. All security cameras have been upgraded and several more have been installed to improve campus safety. The “Don Dome” and weight room have received upgrades and improvements. You will notice a fleet of new NDCP buses driving all over Chicagoland and new parking lot NDCP banners installed on our light poles. We have also constructed a new eSports room for our team that now competes in IHSA tournaments. That makes 17 sports! In addition, our campus saw a record number of summer campers in our sports camps and in our Camp Invention STEM Camp while we hosted many other summer classes for our current Dons. Notre Dame was definitely the place to be all summer for prospective students. We begin this school year with much excitement and we have much HOPE to bring to all that we will experience this year. Thank you for your continued support this year and I hope to see you back on campus and at many school events this year! Please make plans to celebrate the Spirit of Notre Dame Gala with us on Saturday, March 18, 2023!! In Notre Dame, Shay Boyle President, Notre Dame College Prep 3

“The Class of ‘22 was asked to help strengthen and carry on the brotherhood and tradition of Notre Dame College Prep in the face of great challenges. Future classes may not know how important this group was in holding it all together ... ” - Principal Tully ACADEMIC NOTES FROM PRINCIPAL TULLY 4 By Daniel Tully ‘94 The Class of ‘22 experienced four years at Notre Dame College Prep unlike any other. Interrupted by the COVID19 pandemic during their sophomore year, the members of the Class of ‘22 persevered to complete their Notre Dame College Prep education in stellar fashion. Through hybrid learning, eating lunch outdoors, one-direction hallways, going without lockers, and seeing their sports seasons turned upside down, the Class of ‘22 joins the ranks of thousands of Notre Dame alumni before them having completed their high school education in a way that compares to no others. Members of the Class of ‘22 are headed off to Marquette University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Dayton, and Illinois State University in large numbers. At least seven of our grads will enter military service. Overall, members of the Class of ‘22 are headed to 63 different institutions of higher learning and others will enter trade schools and apprenticeship programs. They received offers of over $13 million dollars in scholarships from the schools to which they applied. And as much as the academic achievements of this group were highlights, so too was their spirit. The Class of ‘22 was asked to help strengthen and carry on the brotherhood and tradition of Notre Dame College Prep in the face of great challenges. Future classes may not know how important this group was in holding it all together, but we are grateful for their courage and tenacity. Over the last two years, Notre Dame staff and teachers pivoted to provide creative opportunities for their students, innovative uses of technology, and important personal connections. Notre Dame endeavored over the last two years to provide as many student offerings as possible with unique “community day” offerings, service opportunities, and continued connections for clubs and activities. The strength and compassion shown by the Notre Dame staff to provide a safe and rigorous learning environment in the face of the challenges of the pandemic were critical to our success. And in the end, our belief in the importance of studentadult relationships was reinforced. We are grateful that our students had opportunities to learn and grow each day. And now we look forward to meeting the Class of ‘27. They entered our doors just a few weeks ago, filling the shoes of the Dons who have gone before them. They will bring their own talents, gifts, and ideas. They will build off current Notre Dame College Prep traditions and establish their own. We will continue to focus on the mental health of all students and the social development needs of students who were so significantly impacted by the pandemic. But after more than two years of health challenges, redesigned school scenarios, and countless obstacles, we will educate the minds and hearts of our students better than anyone else. We will rebouND.

“Notre Dame has faced the rigors of Covid, we have surpassed our goals for enrollment, and experienced an excellent response to our fundraising efforts. These are the marks of a school on the rise. Our strength remains the character of our graduates and the Alumni.” - Kevin Burke, Board Chair

LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR 7 As a member of the Board of Directors for NDCP, we see the school from a variety of perspectives. We speak with the faculty, we listen to the concerns of the administration and we watch carefully the student body. Our primary objective is to provide a Catholic education, based on the traditions of the Holy Cross. An education that allows students to choose their own path after graduation. Our goals can be measured in many ways. These would include enrollment, financial stability, academic success of our students, response to adversity and commitment to our students and families. One measure of our strength is seen each year. Every year during graduation week, I am reminded of our success. We begin with the Baccalaureate Mass. Each year, the students and their parents enter with a bounce in their step and a smile on their faces. At the start of Mass, the parents are invited to aid the seniors in wearing their graduation robes. Many parents have shed a few tears at this simple but symbolic step. Our Mass demonstrates our commitment to our faith and its central role in the education of our seniors. On the day of graduation, I arrive early to watch as the families arrive and walk from their cars past the Grotto and to the school. In this way, I can feel the joy and excitement of the family members as the center of our community. I also watch as the seniors greet each other. Their greetings, and the look on their faces, show a growing appreciation of their friendships and brotherhood. These are seniors who have lived and benefited from the Don experience. In my role as President of the Board, I , with Mr. Tully and Mr. Boyle, have the honor of distributing the diplomas and congratulating each senior. This past year, we enjoyed a beautiful day of sunshine, and a full house. Although many schools had this experience, our graduation was different and unique. First, the alumni fathers of the graduating seniors accompany them to the stage, and give their sons their diploma. This tradition shows us the loyalty of so many to Notre Dame College Prep. Second, each year one to three graduating students are Burke scholars. Their acceptance by the student body and our community teaches us that tolerance, acceptance and spirit are alive in these hallways. Notre Dame has faced the rigors of Covid, we have surpassed our goals for enrollment, and experienced an excellent response to our fundraising efforts. These are the marks of a school on the rise. Our strength remains the character of our graduates and the Alumni. Our seniors will take the Notre Dame experience with them in whatever course they choose in life. They have received an outstanding Catholic education which will prepare them to make sound choices, guided by a true moral compass, to value the differences between all of us, and to treasure the friendships made at Notre Dame. We can hope for no more. KEVIN BURKE BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR

COMMENCEMENT ANDREW COATH ‘22 Excerpt from Valedictory address “No man is truly self-made, and the success each of us has experienced would not be possible without the network of support gathered around us this morning. Class of ‘22, we’ve had quite the unique high school experience. Not many other graduating classes can say they survived a global pandemic, so we’ve got that going for us. Those of you who were on my NDSL team might remember me saying “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor” after we got blown out for the second or third game in a row. Now I wish I could take credit for that quote and say it directly pertains to the struggles of my NDSL team, but it actually comes from Franklin D. Roosevelt in context of World War II and the Great Depression. I guess FDR’s situation might’ve been a bit more dire than my NDSL team’s. Regardless, though, the quote does have a broader applicability, especially in regards to everything we have been through together. As a class, we have faced immense challenges throughout our high school experiences: COVID, remote learning, tough courses, late nights, and countless others. But if high school were easy, if high school didn’t have any challenges at all and we were all able to just effortlessly coast through these past four years, we would have gained nothing from our time here at Notre Dame. Having been through every crazy challenge together as ANDREW COATH ‘22 2022 Valedictorian University of Notre Dame 10

CLASS OF 2022 Scan the QR code with your phone camera to watch the 2022 Graduation highlights video! a class, we are all ready for whatever twists life throws us in the future. The obstacles we have faced throughout these past four years have only made us stronger, and this will make itself evident in the future. The word valedictorian is derived from a Latin word meaning “to say goodbye”—to those of you who look surprised, no, it doesn’t mean ‘biggest nerd award.’ After receiving our diplomas, we will all be going our separate ways, whether that be to college, the military, or the workforce. While it might be time to say goodbye to Notre Dame, to moshing in the football bleachers at the end of the National Anthem, to playing overly competitive spikeball in the courtyard, to screaming out the lyrics of Jingle Bells in the gym during the Christmas band concert, and to buying way too many bosco sticks and cookies in the cafe, it’s also time to say hello to the next chapters of our lives. If anyone here has hosted any tours or worked any of the open houses, you’ve probably heard Mr. Smith or Mr. Boyle say that Notre Dame isn’t just four years, it’s a lifetime. The connections and memories that we have made here at ND aren’t going anywhere after we receive our diplomas; they’re here to stay. So as we face whatever comes next in our lives, let’s remember to maintain the special relationships we’ve formed as the Class of 2022. During our time together here at Notre Dame, we’ve learned quite a lot in the classroom. Mr. Brokenshire taught us that bees initially came from Europe, Mr. Aug taught us that Speed 2 is an awful movie, Mr. Uhll taught us that Jesus is always the right answer, although that didn’t quite work on the ACT. Mr. Feeley taught us the chain rule using the shell and chocolate method, and Prof. Longano taught us some interesting words in Italian that I don’t think I can repeat up here. Above everything else, though, we were taught how to be Dons—how to be men of faith, scholarship, and service. And this is something that we should carry with us throughout the rest of our lives. In a few short months we’ll all be moving our separate ways, but it is important that we remember how to be Gentlemen of Mary, because that will take us far in life, and that is arguably more important than anything else we’ve learned here at Notre Dame. Finally, I’d like to thank all of my classmates gathered here this morning. Later on, what we remember from our high school years will not be how to solve a geometric proof or how to annotate a Shakespearan sonnet. Instead, we’ll remember the times we spent with each other both inside and outside of school. The guys that make it up are what really set Notre Dame apart from other high schools, and none of us would be the men we are today without each other. You have all made high school an unforgettable experience for me and for each other, and I am happy to be able to call you my brothers. As a final thought going forward, I’d like to leave you with a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” What lies ahead of us remains uncertain, but what’s important is that we continue moving forward. Notre Dame has thoroughly set up everyone here for a bright future, so there is no need for any hesitancy in taking the next step in our lives, no matter how daunting it may seem. With that being said, let’s go graduate! Thank you. “No man is truly self-made, and the success each of us has experienced would not be possible without the network of support gathered around us this morning.” 11

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TULLY Pete was a member of ND’s 1966 undefeated championship football team before moving on to play for the University of Michigan and later the Detroit Lions in the NFL. In his next chapter, he moved back to Chicago, married the love of his life, raised a family and enjoyed a successful 31-year career with Smith Barney before retiring in 2003.

2022 SPIRIT OF NOTRE DAME AWARD The 2022 Spirit of Notre Dame Award Winner Pete Newell ‘67 attended the Spirit Gala with Nancy, his loving wife of 45 years, along with sons Peter Jr, Kevin and Brian and their wives. 17 PETER NEWELL ‘67 Our 2022 Spirit Gala was a night to remember. The gratitude among the sold-out crowd was palpable as we all relished the opportunity to gather together again for this very special event. This year, we were honored to present Peter J. Newell ‘67 with the 2022 Spirit of Notre Dame Award . Pete is a member of both the Notre Dame College Prep Hall of Honor and Wall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to ND Athletics as a Don and, later, for his incredible service and support as an alumnus. And that is just the tip of the iceberg as far as his devotion to Notre Dame College Prep. Pete is one of the humble heroes who stepped up and fought to protect and preserve NDCP by forging a new path forward when the priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross decided to withdraw their sponsorship from the school . In 2005, early in his retirement years, Pete joined the Advisory Board for NDCP and the rest is history. Driven by his love of Notre Dame and well-equipped with a savvy business sense, Pete was instrumental in implementing the school’s Strategic Plan and served on the school’s first governance Board where he held various positions including Chair of the Board. His unwavering support for the school took on new meaning when Pete accepted the role of the school’s interim President in 2014, thus ensuring that NDCP would continue to thrive and move forward. We all owe Pete and the others a debt of gratitude for stepping in and up for Notre Dame College Prep at a time when every decision was crucial to our future. The success we enjoy today began, in many ways, with the vision and direction of Pete Newell. Scan the QR code with your phone camera to watch the tribute video in honor of Pete.

Legacy scholarships provide many benefits for the NDCP community. Primarily, they create a secure source of financial assistance revenue that will impact hundreds of Dons. They also provide an opportunity for NDCP classes to unite; sending a powerful message about the Notre Dame College Prep Brotherhood. We deeply appreciate the hard work and time of our Legacy Class Scholarship cochairs who graciously devoted their passion and energy to achieving their class endowed scholarship goalsz: Chuck Keenley ‘59 and Gene Faut ‘59, Frank Corrado ‘60 and Ken Rusk ‘60; and Mike Brennan ‘65 and Jim DiStasio ‘65. To learn how your class can build a Legacy Class Scholarship, contact Dick Allegretti, Director of Major Gifts, at [email protected] or Mary Beth Ficht, Director of Alumni Relations, at [email protected]. Winkler Mr. and Mrs. John J. Zei ‘62 THANK YOU! We are honored to have the commitment and partnership of the below listed donors who have given in excess of $100,000 cumulatively to Notre Dame College Prep. These donors are the backbone of our philanthropic community and we are deeply appreciative for their extraordinary generosity. † Denotes deceased * Denotes new to the list in past two fiscal years 21

DONOR SPOTLIGHT 22 What were the contributing factors that brought you to NDCP as a student? I was raised in Niles and went to St John Brebeuf. Although my two older brothers went to Maine East, I was always going to ND. As a 7 th and 8 th grader, my friends and I went to most of the home football and basketball games. A great number of my classmates, including all of my close friends, ended up choosing ND. What has motivated you to support NDCP over the years? I have always been hardworking and financially successful. My parents and upbringing – including ND – played a major role in that. I took a bookkeeping class at ND. While taking this class, I knew I wanted to be an accountant. As a retired CPA, a major part of my life happened because of that class. I don’t have kids of my own but every year I proudly stand and contribute for scholarships at the Spirit Gala. What are your expectations for NDCP in the next 5-10 years? My expectations for NDCP are very high. As a member of the Finance Committee, I am impressed by the dedication of all the people affiliated with the school (teachers, leadership and staff). My wife and I are also impressed with every Don we meet. My wife can tell if the student is a Don by the way they present themselves – courteous and looks at you while talking to you. It is easy to have high expectations when NDCP seems to be doing everything right! What were the contributing factors that brought you to NDCP as a student? When I was a student at St. Juliana, my father made it clear that the only choice for high school would be a Catholic school. When I told my dad I wanted to go to Notre Dame with my friends, he said he really wanted me to go to St. Pat’s with the Christian Brothers. However, he saw Dons were getting a well-rounded, Catholic- based education and the students were being taught to take responsibility for themselves and take on the leadership of others. What has motivated you over the years to support NDCP? Quite a few years after graduation, former NDCP faculty member Tony Kozole invited me to attend an ND basketball game and tour the school. It reopened my eyes to all NDCP had done for me and gave me a desire to give back so others could get the experience. This was not only financial, but also led to involvement in Lifetime Learning and serving on the Alumni Board and Catholic Identity Committee. Seeing the growth of the boys into true Dons, Gentlemen of Mary, has continued my drive to be involved and be a donor. What are your expectations for NDCP in the next 5-10 years? I see Catholic education as being essential to the greater success of gaining back a peaceful, respectful world. I believe, with the help of many, we can produce many more Dons who can continue the legacy of Faith, Scholarship, and Service and be leadership examples for all the world to see. Dons, Gentlemen of Mary, is what the world needs. Tom Theis ‘66 Lifetime Benefactor Jim Ernst ‘67 Lifetime Benefactor

DONOR SPOTLIGHT 25 23 My family and I are forever grateful for what Notre Dame has provided all of us. My brother, my nephew, my son, and myself were all able to benefit from this great institution, because of the many people that have given back to the school. The Notre Dame difference is supplemented financially by so many generous donors year after year and those individuals are directly responsible for the success of the many that have left these halls. I never thought donating back and setting up a planned gift was a choice I had, but rather an obligation to not forget what the many others did before me. We are just a small part of trying to help the future generations of ND students and for that I am also grateful. I set up my planned gift with Notre Dame because of gratitude - I am a big believer in saying thanks. My donations to NDCP over the years have been my way of saying thanks to the Holy Cross priests and selfless lay teachers who took a young boy from a blue collar family and taught him the skills necessary to go on to a higher education and ultimately a professional career. Simultaneously with the academic skills, the teachers at NDCP also instilled solid moral values and a Christian compass that have influenced me throughout my life.  We need schools like this to remain strong. I am in the “winter years” of my life now and I cannot think of a better place to give a substantial final gift. Noreen and I believed that an education is a critical component in achieving success in today’s world. Two quotes, one from my Mother and the other from my Aunt / Godmother, respectively, sums up our view of the importance of an education – “An education can never be taken away from you ” and “Sometimes all a person needs to succeed is a little help from a stranger.” Don Banas ‘70 Lifetime Benefactor Tom Walton ‘59 Lifetime Benefactor A.J.
