Silver and Gold What I Have I Give to You (Acts 3:6)

Greetings in the Lord! All four Gospel evangelists offer simple accounts of Jesus’ Baptism by John. But if we understand Christ’s baptism in the light of Israel’s history and John the Baptist’s symbolic action, we find an amazing richness. When the Baptist preached in the wilderness about the need for repentance and change, people flocked to him and were immersed in the Jordan River, the symbolic entrance to the Promised Land. Indeed, this ritual of baptism called to mind Israel’s vocation as a chosen people, an ancient vocation calling for a new response. Like the Israelites and like those baptized by John, we also must respond to Pope Francis’ invitation to be witnesses of mercy in a new evangelization for the transmission of the Christian faith.

TODAY’S READINGS

Luke tells us in today’s Gospel that people wondered if John the Baptist was the promised Messiah, but John redirected his followers’ attention away from himself and toward the coming One who would fulfill God’s redemption. Then, as Jesus was baptized by John in the ritual re-entrance into Israel’s calling, the divine Holy Spirit – God’s creative breath, the spirit of prophecy – came on Jesus, and a heavenly voice declared Him the beloved and favored Son. Jesus was Messiah, not John.

First Reading — Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11.

In today’s second reading from the Book of Acts, Peter, speaking to the household of Cornelius (a Gentile), sees Jesus’ baptism not only as the beginning of His healing ministry but also as ritual recognition that God’s redemption has no racial or national limits. God does not play favorites but welcomes any who receive Jesus, the Messiah Who saves. God doesn’t discriminate against Gentiles, nor should he. This connection between Jesus’ Baptism and the expanding of the Gospel to include the Gentiles can already be seen in today’s first reading from Isaiah. The text speaks of justice for the nations, rooted first in the breath of life God breathes into all persons, and rooted second in the vocation of God’s chosen people – to bring forth justice “to the nations.” God’s chosen One (and those who follow Him) are endowed with the spirit of God and are commissioned to bring about justice in the world, with a special care for the oppressed, the “bruised reed” and “smoldering wick.” The celebration of the Baptism of the Jesus is actually the celebration of Jesus’ Spirit. Jesus emerges from the water to assume His vocation to bring salvation to the nations – the same mission to which we are called, bringing God’s mercy, justice, and peace to the earth’s peoples, including our own community. This we do under the leadership of our Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., who has announced God’s Word to us this Saturday evening. May we at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School fully participate and collaborate with this saving mission of Christ!

¡Saludos en el Señor! En el Evangelio los cuatro Evangelistas ofrecen relatos sencillos del bautismo de Jesús por Juan. Pero si entendemos el bautismo de Cristo a la luz de la historia de Israel y la acción simbólica de Juan el Bautista, nos encontramos con una riqueza increíble. Cuando el Bautista predicó en el desierto de la necesidad de arrepentimiento y cambio, las personas acudieron a él y se sumergieron en el río Jordán, la entrada simbólica a la Tierra Prometida. De hecho, este ritual del bautismo era para acordarles de la vocación de Israel como pueblo escogido, una antigua vocación pide una nueva respuesta. Como los Israelitas y los bautizados por Juan, también tenemos que responder a la invitación del Papa Francisco, a ser testigos de la misericordia en una nueva evangelización para la transmisión de la fe Cristiana. San Lucas nos dice en el Evangelio de hoy que la gente se preguntaba si Juan el Bautista era el Mesías prometido, pero Juan redirigió la atención de sus seguidores lejos de sí mismo, hacia la venida de Aquel que cumpliría la redención de Dios. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY – December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016 ~~~The Face of Mercy (Misericordiae Vultus)~~~ From Francis, Bishop of Rome Throughout this year of mercy, we will cover the 25 articles of the Bull of Indiction, “The Face of Mercy,” by Pope Francis, announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, as well as an occasional question to reflect on in our own lives and where we see and/or exhibit God’s mercy on others. This week we share a reflection on the logo which you have seen in the Narthex. “Gthe logoGwhich represents the theme of mercy and the motto which accompanies it. The motto—Merciful Like the Father—(taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo is the work of Father Marko I. Rupnik. It shows an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul, demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love that has the power to change one’s life. One particular feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity upon himself, his eyes are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam, his or her own humanity and the future that lies ahead. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the darkness of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives all. Show us your face and we will be saved. You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: Let the Church be your visible face in the world. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. De Francisco, Obispo de Roma A lo largo de este año de la misericordia, cubriremos los 25 artículos de la bula de convocación, "El rostro de la Misericordia", de Francisco, al anunciar el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, así como una pregunta de vez en cuando para reflexionar sobre nuestra propia vida y donde vemos y / o expone la misericordia de Dios en los demás.Esta semana compartimos una reflexión sobre el logotipo que usted ha visto en el Narthex. "... El logotipo... que representa el tema de la misericordia y el lema que lo acompaña. En el lema «Misericordiosos como el Padre» (tomado del Evangelio de san Lucas 6, 36) se propone vivir la misericordia siguiendo el ejemplo del Padre que pide no juzgar ni condenar, sino perdonar y dar amor y perdón sin medida (cf. Lc 6, 37-38). El logo–obra del jesuita Padre Marko I. Rupnik– se presenta como una pequeña suma teológica del tema de la misericordia. Muestra, de hecho, al Hijo que carga sobre sus hombros al hombre descarriado, recuperando una imagen muy querida en la antigua Iglesia, porque indica el amor de Cristo que realiza el misterio de su encarnación con la redención. La obra está hecha de tal manera que pone de relieve al Buen Pastor al tocar en profundidad la carne del hombre, y lo hace con tal amor que cambia su vida. Un detalle, además, no puede pasar desapercibido: el Buen Pastor con extrema misericordia carga sobre sí a la humanidad, pero sus ojos se confunden con los del hombre. Cristo ve con el ojo de Adán y estos con el ojo de Cristo. Cada hombre descubre de esta manera en Cristo, nuevo Adán, la propia humanidad y el futuro que le espera, contemplando en Su mirada el amor del Padre. – Los tres óvalos concéntricos, de color progresivamente más claros hacia el exterior, sugieren el movimiento de Cristo que lleva al hombre fuera de la noche del pecado y de la muerte. Por otra parte, la profundidad del color más oscuro sugiere también lo inescrutable del amor del Padre que todo perdona. She died at the early age of 24, yet accomplished great things through the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The church made her the patroness of missionaries to emphasize this most important truth: One soul coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the world! St. Therese said, “My mission is to make God loved.” May she intercede for us in spreading Eucharistic Adoration throughout the world!

Adults: What are some of the ways in which you have been comforted by God’s merciful compassion? Youth: Reflect on how God and others comfort you in life. How can you share this comfort and mercy with others?

Every time you see a bicyclist on the road, please send up a prayer. A lot of bikes left our store this fall. Three kids' bikes were donated in almost new condition. The family donating 2 of them did not want them sold, but given away. This was going to be tricky, but fortunately, a family participating in the Giving Tree approved of 2 of the used bikes as Santa gifts for their children. The third kid's bike was given to a child whose bike was stolen from his backyard 3 days before Christmas. So we didn't sell that one either. An adult bike with helmet was sold to a single parent just getting out of rehab. No money for a car, the bike was commuting-towork transportation and affordable at $90. OK, so 3 vouchers and one sold. Not only our we a thrift store, but we are also a charity.

We have been gifted with heaters and men's winter coats by a donor wanting the items to be distributed by vouchers. The first coat went to a young father who came in on a 40 something day in shorts, flip-flops, and a sweatshirt. We offered a jacket, he said it could wait, his family needed some other stuff more. We told him to take it in addition to other aide. He walked out with a jacket on, preening.

Mobile Food Pantry Help! We need volunteers to help bag produce and distribute food at our bi-monthly St Vincent de Paul Mobile food pantry taking place in the old gym at Schreiner U. Volunteers are needed Tuesday, Jan 12th 10:3012:30. Feel free to come early and leave for noon Mass. Schreiner students will not be back yet. We promised the San Antonio Food Bank that we would have 15 volunteers. We currently have 8 to 11. Thanks

Our volunteers are getting low on gloves. We are out of gloves in the store. Any time a seasoned citizen comes to the food pantry or financial aide office with icicle hands, we offer gloves. Our own. WISH LIST: Food Pantry: Peanut Butter Thrift Store: Gloves for children, ladies, and outside workers.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door, currently featuring recent additions to the library. We are especially grateful to Louise Leahy, who has donated a large number of fine books from the personal library of her late husband Robert. Gratefulness: The Heart of Prayer: An Approach to Life in Fullness, by Brother David SteindlRast. This is an amazing and impressive book, even before taking into account the fact that the author’s first language was German. (He received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Vienna before emigrating to the United States and entering a Benedictine monastery.) But the graceful and evocative text has no hint of German turgidity: “Thanksgiving, blessing, praise, all three belong to gratefulness. ... Suddenly every-thing is simple. We can drop all the big, cumbersome terms. Gratefulness says it all. And gratefulness is something all of us know from experience. Can the spiritual life be that simple? Yes, what we secretly hoped is true: it is all that simple. It is this very simplicity, in fact, that we find most difficult. But why not drop the complications we put in our own way? What brings fulfillment is gratefulness, the simple response of our heart to this given life in all its fullness.” [pp.82-83] Then, having made his point, he continues for another 140 pages of lively comments on the spiritual life: “The do-gooder is too busy [to risk transformation]. He has no time to bother with flowers. With six tongues the glory of God shouts at us from every lily in bloom, ‘Stop and look!’ Or, as the Psalm puts it, ‘Be still and know’ (Ps 46:10). But the busybody does not understand the language of their silent eloquence. He rushes on: ‘Sorry, I don’t speak Lily.’ His ears are buzzing with the din of his own projects, ideas, and good intentions.” [p.156] This is an utterly enjoyable book!
