Por décadas, el deseo por parte de las voces latinoamericanas por hacer notoria su presencia en los Estados Unidos de América, ha implicado una suma de fuerzas donde el cine ha sido una de las herramientas relevantes.

For decades, Latin American artists have looked for opportunities to showcase their work in the North American market, but in order to accomplish this, several forces had to come together; one of the most important being cinema.

La intención al crear este foro para la comunidad latina era brindar pantallas y espacios a los creadores iberoamericanos y sumarnos con una oferta cultural valiosa que sirviera como mecanismo de comunicación que acercara al debate y a la exposición de las ideas.

When this forum was created, we aimed to provide multiple spaces where Ibero-American films could be screened in order to add to a valuable cultural exchange that would serve as a means of communication to promote ideas and debate.

Hoy en día, mediante las proyecciones, homenajes, presentaciones de libros y actividades especiales para cintas en preproducción, el crisol de propuestas que traemos es diverso, plural e incluyente. Este año se suma como sede las instalaciones del Consulado General de México en Los Ángeles, que recibirá un programa de cortometrajes creados por nuevas generaciones de cineastas que alientan el desarrollo del séptimo arte. Confío que para todos los asistentes, desde los cinéfilos hasta la crítica especializada, así como los invitados de las diferentes áreas del quehacer fílmico, tengan un encuentro afortunado con los temas de reflexión que abordará nuestra programación. I am glad to see that such a contribution has continued to grow into an event that gathers talented people who come here to share the films that were also shown in Guadalajara, or other films that are still in pre-production. Creators come here to meet and find support from the film industry. Today, either through screenings, tributes, book presentations, and other special activities related to films that are still under pre-production, we bring many different projects in order to ensure plurality and inclusiveness. This year we add the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles as one of our venues. A program of short films, created by the new generation of filmmakers, will be screened at their new theater. I’m certain that attendants, whether they are moviegoers or specialized critics, or guest speakers or participants in the academic events, will meet together at this marvelous event, and will have a chance to reflect on the topics that our program includes. I want to express my appreciation to all the organizations that make possible that for one more year we will have a very promising FICG in LA. Please, enjoy! It’s a great honour for me, as Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, to participate in the International Film Festival of Guadalajara in Los Angeles FICGinLA which is the angeleno chapter of the prestigious Guadalajara Film Festival, which will take place this year in the iconic Chinese Theater in Hollywood. I have been a regular participant, with great pride, of the Guadalajara Film Festival, my hometown, since its inaugural presentation when I was a student, and I have seen with great enthusiasm how its prestige has grown year after year. Los Angeles is one of the main capitals of entertainment on the planet and an important link to the activities of this industry that attracts directors, artists, producers and experts from all over the world. This makes this city the film meca and the perfect setting to present the most recent and high quality productions from Latin American cinema. Los Angeles is also a bridge to unite diverse communities interested in learning about films in Spanish. One of my main goals, as head of the largest representation Mexico abroad, is to contribute to promote the culture and the best image of Mexico. The huge effort and impact, as well as the great importance of the FICGinLA, which is one of the major festivals of Latin America, offers an excellent platform to achieve this purpose. FICG in LA is an extension of the Guadalajara Film Festival, established and designed to screen the best of contemporary Latin American cinema in the city of Los Angeles. The programming is composed of the awardwinning films from the diverse sections of our festival, as well as the most relevant events; a sort of “Best of the Fest” of what took place last March in Guadalajara. This documentary is composed of images that were rescued, preserved, and digitally restored by the UNAM Film Archive, with the support of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The film shows the period prior to the Mexican Revolution, beginning with the end of the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship -The Porfiriato - and the subsequent social uprising, the short-lived government of Madero, and the presence of the popular classes in the images of Villa and Zapata, leading up to the ratification of the 1917 Constitution. The film is made with moving images recorded during these historical events, primarily by pioneer filmmakers, the Alva brothers. The film reveals the contradictory and fearful gaze of the contemporary population.

In 2011 he directed the documentary La historia en la mirada about the events leading up to the Mexican Revolution. Mikelajáuregui won the Ariel Award in 1988 for Best Fiction Mid-length film for Sin motive aparente. In 1996 he won the Special Jury Prize at the Havana Film Festival with Planeta Siqueiros. And in 2011, he again won the Ariel Award for Best Documentary Feature for the film La historia en la Mirada.
