Where we’ve been... At ITC, every one of us is passionate about travel. There’s nothing we love more than exploring new places so we can return and share our first-hand knowledge with you.

Inspiring Travel’s David Pointer has just returned from the Islands of Tahiti… A bucket list destination for many, the Islands of Tahiti live up to all expectations – not just for their luxury resorts and overwater bungalows, but also for their paradisical landscapes.

Regent’s Robert Longstaff explored the unique terrains of Greenland…

Take in iconic views of Mount Otemanu in Bora Bora and marvel at the unbelievable shades of blue of its many lagoons. Plus, you can enjoy 4WD safaris and snorkel over pristine corals.

I was really looking forward to seeing icebergs up close on this trip. I’ve been lucky enough to see them in the fjords of south Greenland before and was mesmerised by their beauty, thousands of years in the making. The silence of the fjord being broken by the eerie creaking of the ice is incredible. In llulissat, they’re so vast that you really can’t get a scale of their size.

Rainbow’s Nikki Lynas set off on a selfdrive tour through Namibia… The cinematic landscapes of south Namibia are truly stunning. Watch the ever-changing scenery as you drive along empty roads that stretch out endlessly in front of you. Some of my top highlights include off-roading on the sand dunes of the Kalahari and in Fish River Canyon. That said, my standout memory is of watching a spectacular desert sunset at Sossusvlei. 8 | OT H E R S H O R E S S PR ING 2 02 3

Inspiring Travel’s Bianca McMullen set sail on a Star Clippers Caribbean cruise… Sailing on a Star Clippers tall ship was such an exciting experience and the perfect way to explore the beautiful Caribbean islands. I completely immersed myself in the ship’s daily itineraries, which included stargazing, mast climbing, yoga on the deck and sailing story times. The crew are so welcoming and make you feel like part of the family.

Regent’s Stef Studley embarked on an adventure in Borneo… Sarawakin in Borneo is perfect for adventure and wildlife encounters. It’s home to one of the world’s largest cave networks, where the Mulu Show Caves are famous for their intricate network of stalactites, stalagmites and rock corals. I also saw orangutans at Bako Semenggoh Nature Reserve – including Suduku, the oldest in the reserve at 42 years old!

ITC has now partnered with Positive Planet Our love for travel wouldn’t exist without our love for the planet. So, we’re taking meaningful action to make sure that we preserve our world and its beauty for generations to come. At ITC, we’ve partnered with Positive Planet to support us in achieving our goal of reaching Net Zero. Through our work with them, we’ve measured our carbon footprint and have committed to offsetting the 880 carbon tonnes we produce. To do this, we’ll be planting 8,800 trees and removing 880kg of plastic from the ocean. We’re also taking further measures across the whole ITC business. We’re looking at using only renewable energy tariffs in our offices, reducing our waste and setting up our own ‘Green Team’ to keep everyone on board with our mission to make a positive impact while we travel. itc-uk.com/our-impact

Support local communities

Take care of nature

Think sustainably

When travelling, eat at local and independent restaurants. Opt for locally crafted souvenirs and support community projects.

Only admire animals in the wild with a knowledgeable local guide. Support nature reserves, sanctuaries and conservation projects.

Look for hotels that have ecofriendly initiatives. Reduce your use of single-use plastic while travelling and only take or use what you need.

Are there any travel restrictions to Albania? “While it was once one of the hardest destinations to visit, it’s now extremely easy. It’s VISA free for UK travellers and there are daily flights with airlines such as British Airways and Air Albania.”

Twilight Racing in Abu Dhabi 23-27 November 2023 Combining speed, glamour and drama, the theatre of Formula 1 is incomparable. As the season’s grand finale, a weekend at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix delivers on every level.

It’s hard to find a more spectacular setting for a Grand Prix than Yas Island. Known as Abu Dhabi’s playground, it features day-out-worthy theme parks such as Ferrari World, several beaches and, of course, the iconic Yas Marina Circuit. Designed by the legendary Hermann Tilke, the 3.451-mile racetrack runs alongside superyachts and the futuristic W Abu Dhabi hotel, claiming the title of the most expensive F1 circuit ever built. When it’s the last race of the season, there’s always the promise of enthralling drama to grip F1 fans. Back in 2021, the UAE capital was the scene of one of the most nail-biting title deciders ever, which saw Max Verstappen edge out Lewis Hamilton on the last lap to claim his maiden world title. So, as the blazing sun sets for Formula 1’s only twilight race, why not be there to watch drivers battle it out? With heart-stopping sharp corners and one of the longest straights on the F1 calendar, it’s 58 laps of pure entertainment.

DEST INAT ION FIJI Nanuku Resort, Fiji

With sustainability and conservation at the islands’ heart, Fiji offers foodies the added benefit of tucking into its nutrient-dense cuisine, guilt free! Most of the country’s produce is homegrown, lowering the tourist carbon footprint and supporting the country’s local farmers. Perhaps the primary source of Fiji’s ‘feel good’ effect, though, comes from its people. Blessed with the ‘Bula spirit’ – a phrase describing its culture of kindness and generosity – Fijians make this archipelago the warm, hospitable place it is for visitors and other locals alike. It has many traditions that bring people together in a way that taps into the universal human experience. Fijian firewalking ceremonies are not just dazzling displays, they also instil a sense of togetherness in attendees. Watching the islanders walk over white-hot river rocks without burning their feet is truly inspiring. There’s something incredibly primal about these rituals – a reminder that we’re all connected by our mutual appreciation of fire as a powerful natural resource. These sacred celebrations can be observed at various resorts on Beqa Island, as well as Pacific Harbour, the Coral Coast and on Viti Levu. With such rich cultural offerings and natural beauty, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Fiji is known as one of the happiest places on the planet. Though its residents have long known about its joyful existence, in recent times, visitors have come to discover this for themselves. As one of the top destinations for honeymooners, its shores will fittingly guarantee you’ll fall in love with life, create unforgettable memories and leave in a better mood than the one you arrived in.

T RAVELLI N G TH ROU GH

Tuscany Europe Product Executive Alice Tetlow hit the open road in northern Italy to experience its cultural highlights and lyrical landscapes. Here, she reflects on her travels in Florence and Tuscany.

A

rriving in Tuscany, my journey began in the picturesque city of Florence – a place famed for its historical architecture and Renaissance masterpieces. Known to the locals as simply ‘Firenze’, Florence is home to some of the country’s most iconic sights, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Fiore and the medieval stone bridge of Ponte Vecchio. Wandering around its maze of streets lined with ‘pietraforte’ sandstone buildings, I was astounded by how well-preserved the city is. Eventually, I arrived at my hotel, Portrait Firenze, situated right on the banks of the River Arno. An elegant boutique property, I was immediately struck by how beautifully decorated the interiors were, seamlessly blending the historical characteristics of the building with contemporary furnishings and a slick design. I was attentively shown to my room – a Studio Deluxe River View Suite. After I watched the sun set over the ancient city from my window, it was time to find somewhere delicious to dine. The friendly receptionist at Portrait Firenze pointed me in the direction of an authentic pizza place nearby.

4 4 | OT H E R S H O R E S S PR ING 2 02 3

“'O Munaciello Firenze was a nofrills kind of spot, serving traditional Naples-style pizza fresh from woodfired ovens. A true taste of Italy, the combination of airy dough, tangy tomato puree, creamy burrata, fragrant basil and savoury salami was the stuff of foodie dreams.” Continuing my road trip, I made my way out of the city and ascended into the hills surrounding Florence. My next stay was booked in at Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel – a former monastery dating back to the 15th century that has been restored into a luxury hotel. Nestled amongst Italian pines and dotted with lemon trees, the views over the city were breathtaking. I admired the unmistakable silhouette of the Duomo in the distance from the hotel’s cascading gardens, before retiring to my Junior Garden Suite. During my stay at Villa San Michele, I embarked on one of the hotel’s immersive art tours to experience more of the Florentine culture. With just a few other guests, I visited several local craftspeople and workshops, including a prestigious leather school and an artist named Cecilia Falciai, who specialises in Florentine mosaic.

I NS P I RI NG T RAV EL

My favourite part of the tour, though, was our visit to the perfumery. Tucked away on a quiet street in the centre of Florence, Santa Maria Novella is a 600-year-old apothecary that still produces bespoke scents for discerning customers. We toured its basement, sampling all manner of alluring scents from the glass bottles that were carefully laid out. With my stay in Villa San Michele drawing to a close, I set off for the final stop on my travels through Tuscany. Set in the pristine Italian countryside with its undulating hills and vineyards, the rural region of Casole d’Elsa is quite simply stunning. So much so, that it made me forget all about the romantic beach wedding I’d once pictured for myself in favour of this rustic spot! I checked in to the Grandioso Suite at Castello di Casole, A Belmond Hotel – a restored 10th-century castle set on its own 130-acre private estate. With its thickset fireplaces, regal stone archways and a mesmerising infinity pool, staying at this hotel was like stepping into a fairy tale. I spent my final few days here learning how to prepare pasta under the direction of expert chefs, who would cook my creations and serve them to me in the courtyard – a particularly pretty part of the property, centred around a fountain and interspersed with orange trees. Rounding-off my trip to Italy in the most appropriate way possible, I sat down to an exquisite meal at Castello di Casole’s Michelin-star restaurant. The most memorable part of this world-class meal was the heavenly dessert they served at the end: a dollop of rich frozen yoghurt sandwiched between sweet brioche, which was spread with jam and cream and dusted with icing sugar. I still think about it to this day! Overall, my travels through Tuscany reminded me of some of the greatest pleasures in life – art, food, and excellent hospitality – and I can’t wait to drive through its rolling hills once again. MORE FROM ALICE ON HER…

SOJO UR N I N S I C ILY “For those, like myself, who simply can’t get enough of Italy’s rich culture, Sicily is a must visit destination. Located just off the ‘toe’ of Italy’s famous ‘boot’, this diverse island is a mix of diverse heritages and unique terrains.”

Where to stay I began my sojourn in Sciacca and stayed at Verdura, a Rocco Forte Hotel – an ultra-chic property situated on Sicily’s stunning south-west coast. Surrounded by lemon groves and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the resort is near one of the most iconic historical sites in the world: The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.

Best things to do Driving from Sciacca to Palermo, I stopped off at the hill-town of Monreale to marvel at the 130 Byzantine mosaics that line its famous cathedral. Once in Palermo, though, there was so much to do! I joined a guided walking tour and stood at the footsteps of the Massimo Theatre – the largest opera house in Italy and where some of the most dramatic scenes in The Godfather trilogy were filmed.

Most incredible view While in Palermo, I stayed in a historic Art Nouveau palazzo at Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel. This glamorous hotel overlooks the dazzling Gulf of Palermo and is encased by Aleppo pines and citrus trees. In addition to the beautiful views from my classic Sicilian-style suite, the hotel was an oasis of serenity in an otherwise lively capital city.

Must-have dish Strolling through the beautiful gardens at the Church and Monastery of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, I indulged in some traditional cannoli – an authentic Sicilian dessert comprising crisp pastry shells filled with sweetened ricotta. Other food highlights included Timballo (a traditional pasta dish formed like a cake) and the finest wines from the vineyards of Planeta Estate. Delicious!

Get closer with Rainbow

TRAVEL FACT FILE

The Galapagos Islands Are the lava-forged Galapagos Islands on your bucket list? From Fernandina to Santa Fe, see our Rainbow experts’ tips on how best to explore this stunning archipelago and its world-famous wildlife.

Why should you visit the Galapagos?

When is the best time to visit?

The Galapagos Islands are relatively untouched by humans and remain one of the most unique eco-systems in the world. There’s an abundance of natural wildlife and beauty, with many species of indigenous flora and fauna. You’ve probably heard of the giant tortoise, lava lizards and blue-footed boobies, though this is just the beginning of the wildlife who call the islands home.

April is a great time to visit the Galapagos Islands. The weather is hot and the water is the perfect temperature for swimming.

How do you get there? The islands are 1,000km away from mainland Ecuador, which is where you’ll embark on your flight. Flights to San Cristobal or Baltra depart from Quito, with approximately one hour’s stop in Guayaquil. With its UNESCO-listed old town, Quito is well worth spending a day or two exploring first. The flight from Guayaquil to the islands is a little over two hours, and the flight between Quito and Guayaquil takes about half an hour.

From June to November, the winds pick up and the sea tends to be a bit rougher and colder than at other times of year. The skies are often overcast during this time, but rain is uncommon, and the change in water quality attracts fish and sea birds, making this a fantastic time to snorkel. The weather is warmer and the sea calmer from December to May. While you might experience a few light rain showers, this is balanced with bright sunshine. February and March are particularly hot in the daytime. This is a great time to visit to see plant life, with flowers coming into bloom. Several species of birds mate during this period too, and sea turtle nesting also takes place.

DE ST INAT ION T HE GA LA PAG O S IS L ANDS How should you travel between the islands? You can choose to travel between the islands with a cruise, which will allow you to reach the outer islands. Smaller boats have fewer facilities, but allow you to disembark faster and at smaller docks, such as Tower Island where you’ll see red-footed boobies. You’ll usually spend a few hours on each island, moving on in the mornings and afternoons. Alternatively, land-based options are also available. There are a select few hotels on the islands that offer day excursions to nearby islands. This could be better for you if you want to explore on foot through walking tours, with a mix of seeing nature, wildlife and marine life, and learning about the local culture.

What kind of wildlife will you see? Each island is packed with truly unique nature, animals and plant life that can’t be seen in the wild anywhere else. There are countless varieties of fascinating wildlife, including blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, marine iguanas, waved albatross, white and black-tip reef sharks, barracudas, sea lions and humpback whales, to name just a few! By planning your trip with a knowledgeable specialist, you’ll be able to find the best time to see the creatures you’re most fascinated by.

What are some of the standout experiences? A visit to Floreana is a must for those wanting to experience the culture and community of the Galapagos, as well as the wildlife. Snorkelling is a great way to see a lot of the islands’ famous wildlife up close. You can also swim with penguins off the coast of Isabela! In Santa Cruz, check out the huge rock tunnels formed by ancient volcanic activity, and make sure to visit the giant tortoises in their natural habitat.

Our Travel Specialists at Rainbow can tailor your bespoke journey around the Galapagos Islands. With their in-depth knowledge and expertise, they’ll create an itinerary that ensures you get the most out of your trip.

atch the Trebevic Cable Car from its base station, hidden away amid the houses and gardens of Hrvatin street, and your eye will be drawn inevitably upward, as well as down. Down will give you quite the view – the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina unfurling as the gondola rises. Seen from this increasing height, Sarajevo is dramatically beautiful, spreading east-to-west along the valley cut by the River Miljacka’s progress through the Dinaric Alps. It is colourful too, its rooftops tiled that ruddy shade of orange so common in the Balkans; the tapestry pierced by towers and minarets. It is all there as your ride continues, though by the time you near the summit station at 3,810ft (1,160m), the detail is becoming lost – the whole panorama reduced to the adage about matchboxes and ants. For all this, at some point in the seven-minute ascent, I turn around, answering that urge to look up. If you know the history of Sarajevo, you will understand why. Now refitted as part of the reconstruction of the cable car in 2018, the top station witnessed

5 6 | OT H E R S H O R E S SPR ING 2 02 3

one of the first killings of the war that engulfed the city for almost four years. On 2 March 1992, its guard, Ramo Biber, was murdered by militants, as conflict in the region erupted along religious and ethnic faultlines. Only eight years after hosting the 1984 Winter Olympics, Sarajevo found itself besieged, the surrounding peaks that had made it the ideal host for ski races turned into a hostile ring of fire, bristling with enemy guns, trained on its centre. A plaque by the exit ensures that Biber’s death is not forgotten. It is a gentle tribute, but just one of the many memorials and scars dotted around Sarajevo. It is impossible to miss the bullet holes on the facades along Zmaja od Bosne – the main cross-city artery, which earned the nickname “Sniper Alley” during the siege (its giant Holiday Inn, now repaired as the “Hotel Holiday”, attracting much of the ammunition). You can feel the weight of the past on Trebevic – which, though reborn as a weekend playground, all pushchairs and paths, cradles the concrete corpse of the Olympic bobsleigh track, its dead curves now a canvas for street artists.

Uncover the unusual with Regent The dark days feel even closer at the Markale market, every stallholder selling tomatoes here doing exactly as their predecessors were doing on 5 February 1994, when this key retail space was shelled from on high, and 68 civilians were killed. None of these difficult echoes sound like obvious reasons to add a place to your travel wish-list. And yet, they are all pivotal to the fascinating – and yes, sometimes bloody – tale of a city that has been a continental junction for almost six centuries; a crossroads near the southern edge of Europe, where at least one of the turnings leads straight to Asia. The modern story of Sarajevo began in 1461, when a cluster of villages coalesced into a trading hub under Isa-Beg Ishakovic, Bosnia’s first Ottoman governor. It would grow for the next four centuries, before falling under Austro-Hungarian control in 1878. This latter epoch was short, but it is imprinted on the centre. Vijecnica (city hall) is a grand merging of eras; its arches and alcoves in tune with Sarajevo’s Ottoman aesthetic, even though it was built for the new rulers in 1891 by Czech architect Karel Parik. The Winter Olympics Museum sits within another, equally gorgeous Parik confection, the 1903 Villa Mandic – even as it remembers 1984 via a wealth of video footage, gleaming medals and sporting equipment (a blue bobsleigh looks far happier, in this spotlit setting, than the track it once slid along). The Sacred Heart Cathedral, meanwhile, doesn’t disguise its genetics; a twin-towered neo-Gothic delight, finished in 1887, that would not look out of place in Vienna.

a local favourite where the whole city, it seems, wants to buy lunch. By the time I have emerged onto the cobbles of Ulica Kazandziluk – where every shop is still a thriving coppersmiths – I have almost lost track of the century. Sarajevo is brilliant at this game of blurring periods and influences. But it is a modern city too – a year-round destination where you can pit yourself against some of Europe’s best small ski resorts (Jahorina, Bjelasnica, Igman) in winter, and settle in for one of its most vibrant cinematic extravaganzas, the Sarajevo Film Festival, every August. To the keeneyed traveller, the siege of 19921996 is a chain-rattling Banquo standing wailing on every corner. To the young Bosnian heading out for dinner, it is just another yesterday. Ultimately, all history fades to sepia. It says much about Sarajevo’s terrible Nineties that one of the planet’s most notorious locations is right there in its midst, but is practically a footnote in comparison to the more recent trauma. Still, it is not hard to find it, at the meeting of Zelenih Beretki and Obala Kulina Bana; the spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was shot on 28 June 1914, sparking the First World War. A photo of the assassin, Gavrilo Princip, stares from the wall of the corner building (then a shop, now a museum) where he awaited his moment. The Miljacka flows past it unconcerned. As do the currents of everyday life in a city keen to look to the future rather than the past.

It is the Ottoman era, however, that lingers most romantically. The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque – a colossal relic of 1530 – signposts the way, its minaret a helpful navigational aid. Not that you can mistake the surrounding district for anywhere else. Bascarsija is an evocative maze, where you can eat well and exotically in numerous restaurants. Over three days, I feast on pura (a mountain of polenta with cream and cheese; a breakfast staple) at Kolobara, burek (filo-pastry plaits, stuffed with mince) at Buregdzinica Ahmo, and cevapcici (grilled fingers of minced lamb) at Ferhatovic. I also sit among the tureens of soup and stew at Ascinica Hadzibajric, 0117 453 4602

Calypso Cricket in the West Indies There are few finer things in life than island-hopping around the Caribbean to watch live, worldclass cricket. It’s been said that the only way to get a true understanding of the Caribbean is to see a cricket game there; the sights, sounds, smells and tastes on offer here are found nowhere else in the world. Cricket in the Caribbean goes far beyond sport. Here it’s a part of life, weaving a vibrant strand through the islands’ rich shared heritage. Proud and passionate Bajans, Grenadians, Antiguans and many others unite under one flag when the West Indies cricket team take to the field, accompanied by a soundtrack of calypso, reggae and soca music. Such raw and intensely exciting cricket, paired with sunshine, beautiful scenery and friendly people – alongside a rum punch or two of course – makes for one of the best atmospheres in the world.

“A Caribbean cricket tour with Spectate means sunshine, sandy beaches, delicious food, cool cocktails and a huge helping of world-class sport.” Mike Gatting

HIGHLIGHTS OF

SUMMER Explore the Norwegian Fjords Discover the Norwegian fjords in the glorious sunshine. Though many take to the water on a cruise, one of the best ways to experience them is by train. Set off along the Flåmsbana railway and wind through the fjord-filled landscapes of Hardangervidda, Myrdal and Sognefjord. Continue your adventure with a visit to the hiker-friendly village of Balestrand.

Delve into Iceland’s summer festivals Iceland comes alive with festivals during the summer months. In June, Fishermen’s Day celebrates its sea-faring culture with plenty of seafood, while the Viking Festival brings its medieval history to life. Be sure to stay in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík to celebrate the Summer Solstice Festival and witness the phenomenon of the midnight sun.

Spot elusive brown bears Summer is a great time to visit Finland if you’re looking for unique wildlife. The midnight sun lets you spy on creatures of the night, including the elusive brown bears. Sightings are almost guaranteed between April and September, so plan a summer adventure to spot them and unwind in Finnish saunas to fully immerse yourself in the local culture.

Bask on unique beaches Stripped of snow, Iceland’s summer offers a new perspective on the country’s unique landscape. Explore its unspoilt coastline to discover a rainbow of black, red and golden sands. Iceland is also an excellent whale-watching destination in the summer – head to the coast to witness these formidable creatures rise out of the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Between September and March, visitors can unwind in this natural spa in the dark, keeping an eye out for the elusive northern lights above. Dashing through the snow… Like something out of a fairy tale, dash through the snow on a magical reindeer sledding tour from Camp Ripan in Sweden. With the ice creaking around you, hunt the night sky for rippling rivers of greenish-blue light then huddle around the roaring fire to feast on traditional Sámi delicacies. After an unforgettable expedition, thank your chauffeurs by feeding the reindeer.

Embark on e-snowmobile adventures Whizz along forest paths on an electric snowmobile to catch a glimpse of the northern lights in Finland, Norway or Sweden. Glide silently through pine trees on your eSled to a remote reindeer herder’s tent or a hut, where you can feast on traditional Nordic cuisine around an open fire. Gourmet Getaways FO R 2 0 2 3

Inspiring Travel has recently launched one of our new holiday collections, Gourmet Getaways. To celebrate, Les Dunn, Managing Editor of delicious. magazine, has given us his favourite places for a culinary adventure...

GRENADA This Caribbean island’s celebrated lushness helped it become spice central, with nutmeg the king. Buy a bag from the banterlively spice market in the capital, St George’s – a fragrant essential for your suitcase.

Les Dunn Managing Editor of delicious. magazine

There’s ample fancy dining – the most famous is Rhodes Restaurant at Calabash hotel, founded by the late great Gary Rhodes himself. You need to try downhome cooking too, though: for rice and peas, curry goat and jerk chicken, Seafront BB’s Crabback in St George’s is the place. The signature crabback is land crab, cooked in a white wine and cheese sauce and served in the shell – pair it with a bottle of local Carib beer for instant happiness.

Grenada also specialises in ethically produced ‘tree to bar’ chocolate. Buy bars such as the brilliant Grenada Chocolate Company’s Nib-a-licious in the House of Chocolate, near BB’s. To explore deeper, head for the beautiful Belmont Estate in the northern hills of the island, for a tour of the magical chocolate-making process.

“You can’t come to the Caribbean and not indulge in rum. At the distillery shop of world-renowned Westerhall, buy beautifully barrel-aged No. 10. To marvel at an ancient, water-wheel-andlog-fire-powered distillery in action, head to the fascinating River Antoine Estate. Its Rivers Rum comes in two strengths: potent and "Whooaa!"”

VENICE For a crash course in the wondrous variety of produce on offer in Venice, treat your senses to the sights, sounds and smells of Rialto Mercato, near Rialto Bridge. Head early in the morning to this lively food market, where real locals go to haggle over everything from anchovies to zucchini. Avoid the overpriced trap of touristy restaurants – instead, for value and atmosphere, crawl the Venetian bacaros, informal bars that serve delicious morsels (cicchetti). In central All’Arco in San Polo it’s old-school charm all the way – and ‘granny’s sardines in onion marmalade’ is delicious. Ostería Al Squero, overlooking an atmospheric gondolier repair yard in Dorsoduro, is great for crostini. The Venetian spritz (a bitter aperitif topped up with prosecco and maybe soda) is a thing of legend. To sound like a pro, eschew Aperol and Campari in yours and order a local Select or Cynar, the latter made with artichokes.

"For a less ephemeral dining experience, book ahead for Osteria alle Testiere, a small, highly regarded fish restaurant. The turbot with olives and capers is as good as it gets, especially with a chilled soave from Veneto, the local wine region."

OMAN Its position looking out from Arabia towards India has added spice and pop to Oman’s cooking. The country may be un-bling-ily low key and low rise (spectacular mountains aside), but it has flavours that shout out. After a stroll along the seafront Mutrah Corniche in sultry Muscat, Oman’s capital, some refreshment is in order. A beer is out of the question, though (apart from international hotels, Oman is dry). Fear not – the juices here are an artform. At Juice World, slurp a cooling glass of pomegranate or lemon and mint to power up for exploring Mutrah Souk. Oman has a long coastline teeming with fish, from horse mackerel to yellowfin tuna, in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Behold the abundance at a fish market such as the one in Sinaw, and partake of it in beachfront Al Hawash in the fishing town of Sur. Choose a whole grouper, say, and opt to have it grilled with Indian spicing for a lunch of champions.

"If you venture inland to the mesmerising desert dune landscapes of Wahiba Sands, you might also want to boldly go with your palate. Around these parts you can try slow-cooked camel meat (surprisingly tender and kind of lamby). Jizan restaurant in Bidiyah does the best." 74 | OT H E R S H O R E S SPR ING 2 02 3

Uncover the unusual with Regent

Slovenia SPOTLIGHT ON

Slovenia could be your undiscovered gem of Eastern Europe. From glacial lakes to Venetian towns, boutique wineries and formidable mountain ranges, this Balkan country has so many unique experiences to offer.

Regent’s Ellie, Jonathan and Fergus, recently set off to uncover the secrets of Slovenia and are excited to share their top travel insights with you.

Ellie’s Highlights “I loved visiting Logar Valley in north Slovenia, where the Kamnik-Savinja Alps border Austria. It’s home to generations of families who still make a living from the land on alpine farms. We stayed in Hotel Plesnik here – a beautiful property with an amazing natural pool. Travelling down south to the wine-growing region of Vipava, I was captivated by Slovenia’s undulating landscapes, farm-totable restaurants and, of course, its boutique wineries. Vipava remains quite unknown to tourists but is a place that begs to be discovered! A coastal stop came next, in the picturesque town of Piran. With its combination of Venetian architecture, winding alleyways and inspiring views of the Adriatic Sea, Piran is a ‘must visit’ for its amazing sunsets and incredible seafood.” 7 8 | OT H E R S H O R E S S PR ING 2 02 3

Jonathan’s Highlights “One of my favourite parts of our trip to Slovenia was embarking on a tour of Postojna Cave. Located in the southwest of the country, this fantastic network of passageways stretches on for 5km and was forged by the Pivka River. I’ll never forget seeing the hundreds of icicle-shaped stalactites hanging from its gaping ceiling. Using my drone over the iconic Lake Bled was also a huge highlight for me and a personal bucket list experience, as someone who is interested in photography. Finally, a special mention should also go to the outstanding food scene in Ljubljana. It’s a compact capital city with a great atmosphere, where the streets are lined with restaurants serving authentic regional favourites. Delicious!”

Fergus’ Highlights “We all loved our visit to Bohinj – a rural region in the north-west of the country and home to the largest lake in Slovenia. The scenery in Triglav National Park is magnificent, from the formidable peaks of the Julian Alps to the vast swathes of greenery and the pristine waters of Lake Bohinj. We took a ride on the Vogel cable car up into the mountains and were rewarded with spectacular panoramic views over the park. At the top, we stopped for a cup of coffee at the café and to capture the epic views on our cameras. Bohinj is a brilliant alternative to Lake Bled and there’s so many ways to explore it, including hiking, kayaking and swimming. Plus, from December to April, the park turns into a winter wonderland and a fantastic ski destination.”

DISCOVER GREEN SEASON IN

Botswana The landlocked country of Botswana in South Africa is typically defined by its dry savanna and big game sightings. Between November and March, though, the country experiences its wet summer season, when its thirsty terrain is blessed by short thundershowers. Otherwise known as ‘Green Season’, summer in Botswana offers a wonderful time to travel.

Why visit in Green Season? Travelling out of peak season certainly has its benefits. Lodges offer special rates during these months and airline prices to South Africa are generally lower. Plus, you’ll have fewer crowds to contend with while on safari, meaning no waiting in long Jeep queues at significant sightings.

What can you see? While some species of game are more difficult to spot in the long grasses, ‘green season’ is also when you’ll find more baby animals roaming around. Chobe National Park is amazing for wildlife viewing throughout the year, from giraffes to lions and blue wildebeests. Summer also spells the enormous zebra migration between Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Pans, as well as an influx of colourful migrant birds.

Highlight of Green Season

Plan your trip to Botswana during green season with a Rainbow Travel Specialist.

It’s the best time to take photographs. Capture spotted hyena against bright green shrubbery with dramatic thunderclouds rolling in the sky above. Green season is the most visually striking time of year to visit Botswana, when the landscape is awash with colours and the sky is constantly shifting from dark clouds to glorious sunshine.

They’ll use their in-depth knowledge to tailor your experience so it gets you to the heart of nature, while being responsibly made. 0208 131 0258
