The trade visitors at this year’s K travelled from 157 nations to the Rhine. Next to Germany, those European countries strongly represented on the visitors’ part included the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, France, Belgium, Poland and Spain. With 42% of visitors coming from overseas, the reach of K is as high as usual among the international trade audience. While visitors from the East Asian region, in particular, were less well represented than at K three years ago due to the currently more difficult conditions in those countries on account of quarantine regulations, numerous visitors from the USA, Brazil and India were welcomed at K 2022. For around two thirds of all visitors polled machinery and plant construction ranked first in terms of interest. 57% and, hence 5% more than at K 2019, said they were interested in raw and auxiliary materials, with recyclates and bioplastics being particularly popular. For 28% semi-finished products and technical parts made of plastics and rubber were the main reason for coming (multiple responses possible). Over 70% of all visitors come from top and middle management. Top marks were given by visitors to K 2022 for the completeness of its ranges and its mapping of the entire supply chain. 98% of all professionals stated they had fully achieved the goals associated with their visit. During the eight trade fair days it became clear that this year’s K was right on target with its selection of hot topics, circular economy, climate protection and digitalisation. In terms of investment intentions, machinery and equipment for processing and recycling stood out at 43%. The focus was particularly on sustainability, but also on circular economy and energy/ resource efficiency in production. Around 40% of decision-makers said they were looking into the topic of decarbonisation. The K specials, which also focused on the three hot topics, were also very well received. The official special show, ‘Plastics Shape the Future’, focused on the economic, social and ecological challenges and potential solutions around the K guiding topics in high-calibre discussions and lectures, and this show was well attended throughout. The Circular Economy Forum, where the VDMA and 13 of its member companies impressively demonstrated the importance of technology in the implementation of the circular economy in the plastics industry, scored points with the international audience with live demonstrations and a great deal of well-founded knowledge as well as detailed information on the topic. At this year’s K in Düsseldorf, there was also a lot of discussion about the global production language, OPC UA. This standard allows the processing parameters of the machinery and equipment involved to be coordinated more precisely and in a more targeted manner. This, in turn, is considered an important prerequisite for optimised circular management. 40 companies from eight countries participated in an OPC UA demonstration project at the trade fair. At the Science Campus both exhibitors and visitors at K 2022 were provided with a condensed overview of scientific

activities and findings in the plastics and rubber sector. Numerous universities, institutes and funding bodies offered opportunities for direct dialogue here. The offer of the Plastics Training Initiative (KAI) was used by many pupils, trainees and students to gather information on the job profiles and career opportunities in the plastics industry. The next K Düsseldorf will be held from 8 to 15 October 2025. For more information about K Düsseldorf please visit: www.k-online.com

fair of the plastics and rubber industry and succeeded in providing fresh impetus in all sectors of our industry. The many, in part, unexpected concrete contract negotiations held at the trade fair speak for themselves!” The current unpredictability and uncertainty of events does make for a tight situation in the sector overall, but this did not do any harm to exhibitor commitment and visitor interest, quite on the opposite: “Especially now in turbulent times and where the plastics industry is undergoing transformation towards the circular economy K 2022 was the ideal place to jointly and actively chart the course for the future,” sums up Ulrich Reifenhäuser. It was especially the wealth of new technology developments that raw materials producers, machine manufacturers and plastics processors presented for implementing the circular economy, resource conservation and climate protection that thrilled the trade visitors. Commenting on this

Ulrich Reifenhäuser says: “It can be clearly felt that all companies have embraced the need to take on social responsibility and think about plastics in a sustainable way from the beginning of the process chain. The variety of solutions, machinery and products for transformation towards a circular economy presented at K 2022 was incredible.”

K 2022 Results Fulfil Highest Expectations

Innovation driver for the global plastics and rubber industry

Multitude of concrete solutions, machines and products for the transformation towards a circular economy   The joy of the plastics and rubber industry at finally being able to exchange ideas in person on a global level again after three years characterised K 2022 Düsseldorf and ensured an excellent mood among the 3,037 exhibitors. The companies reported extraordinarily good leads and a marked willingness to invest among trade visitors, mentioning promising new customer relations and the conclusion of numerous, in part, spontaneous business deals. “K in Düsseldorf has once again fulfilled highest expectations. It continues to be the most international, complete and innovative trade fair of the global plastics and rubber

industry,” says Erhard Wienkamp, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, delighting at the good results and adding: “The trade fair has impressively demonstrated just how valuable face-to-face networking, chance meetings and physical brand and product experiences are. We are very satisfied to see that K 2022 succeeded in sending out strong signals as an innovation driver of the industry and that our exhibitors did business with a high number of international customers with great decision-making powers.” 176,000 trade visitors from all continents travelled to their most relevant sectoral event in Düsseldorf. At over 70% the proportion of international guests at K 2022 remained at a constantly high level. The verdict from Ulrich Reifenhäuser, Chairman of the Exhibitor Advisory Board at K 2022, is also very positive: “After hardly any trade fairs could take place worldwide also on a national level over the past three years, K 2022 was all the more eagerly anticipated as the world’s No. 1 trade

Turkish Plastics Recycler Invests in Starlinger Post-Consumer HDPE and PP Recycling Line The recycling line, installed at the company’s recycling facility in Başiskele, Kocaeli Province, took up operation mid of September 2022 Featuring Starlinger’s special high-vacuum degassing unit, the recoSTAR dynamic 215 C-VAC has a production capacity of two tonnes of high-quality plastic pellets per hour and processes post-consumer HDPE and PP bottle flakes. The line is equipped with a SMART feeder which ensures ideal material preparation prior to extrusion, effectively drying and homogenising the input material. “The Starlinger recoSTAR dynamic recycling lines have been designed with the focus on processing contaminated and highly humid post-consumer plastic waste”, explained Paul Niedl, Commercial Head of Starlinger recycling technology. “The elaborate construction of the SMART feeder allows the recycling of materials with higher levels of humidity. In combination with Starlinger’s Dynamic Automation Package which regulates the ideal operating point, it achieves a significant output increase.” The specially developed C-VAC degassing unit with its modern cascade setup takes care of volatile contaminants after the main extruder, effectively removing them by expanding the melt surface by 300 %. Tanrıkulu supplies the produced regranulate to the Turkish plastic product manufacturing industry. While the recycled polypropylene is used mainly to produce automobile plastic parts, furniture, toys and other injection moulding products, as well as for pallets, buckets or packaging films, the recycled polyethylene is used for pipes, bottles, plastic bags, and similar products. “At Tanrıkulu, we try to improve ourselves at every opportunity we get. For that, we continuously upgrade our production equipment”, said İzzet Tanrıkulu, General Manager of Tanrıkulu Group of Companies. “To ensure best regranulate quality, the post-consumer input material passes metal

detectors and filtration systems before being washed and sorted. The excellent vacuum degassing capacity of the Starlinger line combined with its high production output helps us to achieve best product quality at favourable costs, ensuring continuous supply of high-quality PP and PE regranulate to our customers.” From paper, glass and metals to plastics recycling With currently ten plastics recycling and manufacturing plants in various parts of Kocaeli Province, which borders the Istanbul metropolitan area, Tanrıkulu originally started out in 1989 in Istanbul, recycling paper, glass and metal waste. In 2006 the company began to produce regranulate from plastic waste and diversified by adding a facility for the production of PET sheet in 2014. Since then, Tanrıkulu has become one of the leading plastics recycling enterprises in Turkey and exports 50 % of its PET sheet products to overseas markets. Its plastics recycling capacity doubled after opening the Izpack PET packaging production facility in 2018 and installing automatic plastic sorting systems in 2019. Delta Tecnic Improves Cable Properties in a Full Digital Transformation Delta Tecnic, a benchmark company in the production of masterbatches for the cable and PVC industry, values the manufacture of masterbatches and coloured compounds through the dilution of fluoropolymer resin. Thanks to their ability to retain stability in almost all chemical enviro ments, fluoropolymers give high performance to cables, which is especially relevant in this context of digital tran formation. The fluoropolymer masterbatch market size was valued at $426.6 million in 2020 and a compound annual growth rate of 3.6% is estimated between 2021 and 2027, according to a study by Global Market Insights. Precisely, the growing demand from cable companies contributes to the increase in the use of this type of masterbatches. And it is that fluoropolymer masterbatches are widely used in colouring applications of various products due to their characteristics which are superior to other thermoplastic resins. Higher quality of polymeric compounds After more than five years using this type of polymer, Delta Tecnic highlights the excellent combination of properties in terms of protection against oils and chemicals, as well as high thermal resistance. Among the qualities of these coatings we can highlight their low surface energy, low coefficient of friction, high inertia to any chemical agent, high resistance to abrasion and zero alteration due to light. Delta Tecnic began its offering with masterbatches made with FEP-which stands out for being highly transparent and resistant to sunlight-and with EFTE, highly durable due to its chemical resistance and stability to temperature changes and ultraviolet rays. Now the company has increased its range by incorporating both PFA, with creep resistance and thermal stability, and PVDF, which exhibits efficient piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. More efficient cables for growing industries The cable industry is diversifying and growing hand in hand with new technologies, especially with the new generation of wir less networks (5G) and high speeds. It is precisely in this sector where it is important to reduce the weight of cables and increase connections thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT). Due to their good general behaviour, fluoropolymers can be used in difficult conditions, allowing for reducing the use of insulation and the dimensions of the cables. There are multiple benefits associated with the use of these resins in cables. One of them is its resistance to extreme temperatures, very useful in high performance applications in environments where there are extreme

www.plastechmag.com

climates with very wide temperature ranges from very high to very low. Their chemical resistance makes them optimally used in heavy machinery units or in chemical factories where there is a danger of both high temperatures and contact with chemical agents. Obviously, these properties make them exceptional in case of exposure to chemical elements, avoiding a decrease in electrical performance or even a power failure, with all the negative consequences that this electrical shutdown can cause. There is an increasing demand for the reduction of thicknesses and weights in the cable industry. Fluoropolymers, thanks to their excellent insulation properties, enable the manufacture of cables with very fine insulation, helping to reduce weight, as well as enabling wiring in designs that require extremely small cables. Thanks to their chemical structure, fluoropolymers are extremely flexible and in applications where continuous movements are required, their high resistance to deformation is highly valued to avoid breakage in the conductor insulation after long cycles of use. These materials also have exceptional insulative properties, allowing for optimum insulation and are an excellent solution for very long-distance cabling with exceptional insulation requirements. Fluoropolymers also have a very low coefficient of friction and wear resulting in a much lower loss of electrical energy than other polymers used as insulators. This makes them the best option in circuits where a loss of energy would be a potential problem. So we can highlight all the benefits of using fluoropolymers: temperature resistance, chemical resistance, compactness, flexibility, efficiency, longer length and zero energy loss. When put together, all these benefits offer the resulting cable a longer useful life and better perfo mance, thus keeping maintenance costs lower and requiring less repair or replacement. In the aviation, automotive and special wiring industries, the introduction of these materials thanks to their high use temperatures and their chemical resistance has been increasing, now comprising an essential family of materials. In addition, the transition to the electric car requires battery and charging cables that the combustion one doesn’t. The strong expected growth of this industry and the change in consumer behaviour are moving the sector towards a new scenario. Windmöller & Hölscher Reports a Very Successful K 2022

W&H presented new machine technologies and packaging solutions for sustainable flexible packaging production at a very successful K 2022. Windmöller & Hölscher, specialist for machinery in the flexible packaging market, presented new developments in three areas at K 2022: Efficient production, Circular Economy, and Digitization. The W&H slogan at K 2022, “Get in the Loop” and the infinity symbol illustrate the way these three topics influence each other and contribute to the success of sustainability. “The K trade fair has proven itself as a meeting point for the industry, as a performance show and as an important point of contact with our customers,” says Peter Steinbeck, CEO of W&H. “Just like before the pandemic, we had visitors from all over the world at the W&H booth. With the live machine demonstrations three times a day, we reached several hundred visitors each time,” adds Dr. Sascha Witt, CSO of W&H. On four exhibition days, W&H hosted an in-house EXPO at its headquarters in Lengerich, where another 12 lines including extrusion, printing, and converting machinery were presented. Around 1,100 visitors from 83 countries traveled to Lengerich. The highlight for trade fair visitors was the VAREX

II blown film line in operation at the booth. The daily machine show in Düsseldorf featured live demonstrations of the new EASY2 Change assistance system, an autopilot for product changes. Compared to an experienced operator, the number of necessary clicks for a product change is reduced by more than 70% and the time needed is cut by more than half - and all that with the certainty that no errors are made. This is especially important for difficult products, for example containing recycled materials with varying qualities. After the end of the trade show, the line is now being delivered to the customer IsoFlex Packaging, a member of the Sigma Plastics Group in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. W&H also highlighted new packaging solutions ready for the Circular Economy: Six examples that are made for recycling and four solutions that use high percentages of recycled materials. All solutions have been extruded and printed with W&H lines and have been tested for their practicability with W&H sack making lines or with converting partners – proving that sustainable solutions with the required functionalities are possible today. Herbold Meckesheim Receives Many Orders at K 2022 Herbold Meckesheim is thoroughly satisfied with the results of K 2022. The fact that the leading trade fair for the plastics and rubber industry focused on the circular economy naturally played into the order books of the manufacturer of recycling systems and machines. In addition, Herbold Meckesheim has formed together with the Stuttgart-based machine manufacturer Coperion a new Recycling Business Unit in October, which offers complete solutions for plastics processing, as it continues to develop. This has been received with great interest by the market. Herbold Meckesheim’s résumé reflects the international orientation of the plastics trade fair: The majority of the relevant discussions related to projects abroad, with Spain, France, Turkey, India, Sweden, Poland or Brazil, for example, being strongly represented in addition to the USA. “You can see how seriously recycling is being treated in many countries,” comments the special machine manufacturer on the inquiries from six of the seven continents, “which show that there is an increasing demand worldwide for the reprocessing of post-consumer waste, especially PET.” Fittingly, the core area of the customer inquiries was even more clearly on washing lines and the interest in the projects was of a more sustainable nature, Herbold states. In the field of recycling plants, most of the orders discussed were for PET washing lines, while those for films were in demand on a similar scale. The plant manufacturer’s solutions for the recycling of rigid plastics and big bags also met with an unbroken response. Among the machine solutions, the classic granulators continue to be a top seller, in addition to shredders, pulverizers and drying systems. Accordingly, Herbold Meckesheim had brought a further developed version of its SML 60/100 SB 2

granulator to the fair in Düsseldorf, which – whether dry or wet – is ideally suited for grinding PET bottles, for example, and is equipped with a horizontal forced feeding device. A mechanical dryer T 2016 PA, which achieves an equally high drying performance with different types of plastic materials, was also exhibited at the Herbold booth. As well as a HV 70 plastcompactor with silo, which produces agglomerates of high bulk density with high throughput and minimal thermal stress. The fact that a notable part of the total inquiries were for a HV plastcompactor confirms the variable deployment options and pronounced customer satisfaction with this series. The merger of Coperion and Herbold Meckesheim and the resulting opportunities were very positively received, according to everyone’s impression. The newly founded Recycling Business Unit is able to offer modular system and plant solutions on an industrial scale and combines the complementary technologies of both companies for the benefit of the customers. reprocess their in-house waste. Besides packaging film producers, woven bag producers now also require higher quality recycling (minimal material degradation) to reduce production costs as much as possible. The Repro-One recycling technology from POLYSTAR is a combination of shredder, extruder, and pelletizer in one machine. This one-step, powerful (shredder) yet gentle (low processing temperature) process produces the best possible pellets quality at the lowest operation cost, enabling the producers to reuse all of the pellets back in PP tape extrusion lines. In India, the requirement for more advanced recycling machines is rising, especially for PP raffia, woven bags, and FIBC producers who need to process their internal waste. More than 105 Repro-One recycling machines have been installed in the sector of India alone, and 350 more around the globe.

Less Expensive to Maintain. Faster Delivery. Lower maintenance cost is a key advantage of using a POLYSTAR. The cost of consumable parts is 2.5~3 times lower compared to European machine suppliers of similar built quality. With the new (third) facility in Taiwan, POLYSTAR has been able to better serve our customers with faster machine delivery time and in-time spare parts support; keeping a large number of critical machine components in stock. For standardized machine models from POLYSTAR, the lead time is only 4-6 months. As the demand for recycling machines remains strong, POLYSTAR continues to prepare in-stock recycling machines and spare parts to avoid long delivery times, providing their worldwide customers with simple solutions. Post-consumer and Post-industrial Plastics Recycling Demand is Growing That’s why the Repro-Flex model from a Taiwan-based recycling machine manufacturer POLYSTAR has become one of the most popular models among recyclers due to its high level of efficiency and stability in recycling both soft and hard plastic scraps in a variety of forms. As of today, 1,200 Repro-Flex recycling machines are in operation worldwide.

Two-stage Plastic Recycling Machine Adds Flexibility for Recyclers

It may be good for everyone to be in the plastic recycling business whether you are a recycler or a producer. New regulations in many countries now require producers to use a higher percentage of recycled content in flexible and rigid packaging products. The instability of raw material prices and supplies also forces plastic producers to better recycle their production waste. With the great importance of recycled-based plastic products, the global demand for plastic recycling is expanding. Recyclers are now purchasing more advanced technologies and much plastic equipment at once, as well as bigger pelletizing extruders.

Cutter-compactor increases the output of large plastic recycling lines.

A cutter compactor has a clear advantage, especially for larger-sized recycling extruders. Through natural heat and friction generated from the rotation, it can quickly compact and densify the light-weighted material into a more solid form to be fed into the extruder at a constant rate.

For recyclers who process washed and fully printed postconsumer waste, POLYSTAR offers an option of adding a second extruder to the Repro-Flex model. Also having a cutter compactor built in and operating with the same working principles, the two-stage model Repro-Flex Plus has a total of three degassing zones and two filtration steps throughout the entire recycling process. This model is also ideal for processing post-industrial laminated/multi-layered waste. When processing post-consumer materials, the cuttercompactor reduces the ink and moisture level of the material coming from the washing lines, such as washed flakes (from film and woven bags) as well as regrind waste from milk and shampoo bottles. At the same time, it stabilizes the material being fed into the extrusion pelletizing line to ensure consistent production output and better pellets quality.

Shredder integrated plastic recycling machine Extruder can process Raffia inhouse waste in one step. The reusability of recycled pellets has become more important than ever for plastic producers who recycle and

ENGEL Launches Pay Per Use New usage model offers more flexibility and assurance

ENGEL breaks new ground in injection moulding machine distribution. Blazing a trail for its industry, the machine manufacturer now offers its customers a pay-per-use model on top of classical machine purchases. This helps processors to reduce their investment risk while at the same time boosting flexibility in production. Payment is made as a function of the machine utilisation level. A unit price is agreed either per unit produced or unit of machine operating time. The pay-per-use model allows processors to avoid the risk of binding capital or the need to seek approval for substantial investments. This often means that the procurement process can be concluded faster. Assuring high machine availability is another benefit. All production cells delivered in the scope of the pay-per-use model feature the online support and remote maintenance tool e‑connect.24 and are regularly maintained by ENGEL service technicians. In a service case, the ENGEL technicians can start troubleshooting immediately. Maintenance work can be planned at an early stage to keep unavoidable machine downtime to a minimum. And e‑connect.24 acquires the machine utilisation as the basis for billing. At the end of the agreed contractual term, the customer has the option of purchasing the machine. Alternatively, ENGEL Used Machinery, the pre-owned machine company in the ENGEL Group, can take back the machine. This means that Pay per Use makes a contribution towards sustainability. After all, the business model ensures that the potential service life of the injection moulding machine is utilised to the max. The financing partner backing the new pay-per-use solution by ENGEL is linx4 GmbH, which is headquartered in Vienna. ENGEL is the first supplier in the injection moulding machine field to offer its customers this flexibility. For more information about ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH please visit: www.engelglobal.com

The metropolis on the Atlantic Ocean continues to grow more and more, as does the economy of the country in southwest Africa. Growth rates of up to 5 per cent are forecast for the coming years (1). By opening a second plant, ALPLA is highlighting its ambitions for the Angolan market. ALPLA has been active in the national market for highquality beverage packaging with an in-house production plant for customer and partner Refriango in the Luanda suburb of Viana since 2018. With success, because quality increases demand. And after Refriango was commissioned by The Coca-Cola Company as the official bottler in Angola in 2022, ALPLA’s second plant followed in the summer. ‘Angola has enormous potential. We have continuously expanded our capacity and our headcount since entering the country. The market for plastic packaging is developing very dynamically, and we are at the forefront and aiming for

further growth,’ explains Mike Resnicek, Managing Director Sub-Saharan Africa at ALPLA. Opportunities and challenges By opening its second plant, the packaging company is highlighting its ambitions for the Angolan market. The roughly 4,000 square metre site was built separately and manufactures PET preforms for the country’s beverage industry. The 15 new employees increase the total number of employees to 45. The total production area of the two plants is 5,500 square meters, houses seven machines and includes IM-PET (injection moulding for preforms) and CM-CAPS (compression moulding for closures) technologies. Though the opportunities in the Angolan market are excellent, so too are the challenges. Plant Manager Aires Filipe is aware of this, saying, ‘Local suppliers are still scarce, and there are bureaucratic hurdles that make business more difficult. On top of that, finding qualified employees can take a while.’ Teamwork, entrepreneurial spirit and mutual appreciation within the Family of Pioneers

The contents of this publication as a whole or in part should not be copied, photocopied, reproduced, photographed, printed or published without the written permission of the publisher.

Publishing Manager & Chief Editor Kareem Ghozzi Deputy Chief Editor:

Consumers in Kuwait will now be able to enjoy Diet Pepsi® in 100% recycled plastic bottles, as PepsiCo continues its expansion of sustainable packaging alternatives in the GCC, amid rising consumer consciousness around sustainability and regional government priorities. Pepsi is the first beverage brand in Kuwait to introduce locally manufactured, 100% recycled plastic bottles through its beloved low-calorie product, Diet Pepsi. The move accelerates efforts to drive a circular economy and reduce packaging waste in the country. The bottles are made from plastic that has been recycled, reprocessed, and repurposed, making them more environmentally friendly, as they have over 30% less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as compared to virgin fossil-fuel based PET. The new packaging will be available in 2.25L Diet Pepsi bottles, offering consumers a refreshing drink, in more sustainable packaging. The launch comes at an important time in Kuwait, as the State works towards diverting 80% of waste away from the landfill by 2035. Aamer Sheikh, PepsiCo Middle East CEO, said, “We’re using the power of our brands to inspire people to make more positive choices for themselves and the planet and are proud to launch the 100% recycled bottles in Kuwait with our Diet Pepsi product offering. The Government of Kuwait has ambitious plans to build eco-cities in the coming years, and a greener, cleaner environment is intrinsically linked with the well-being of people. More sustainable packaging, and in parallel – the development of an effective waste management system, will play a significant role in driving this forward.” Efforts are underway with policy makers, local bottlers, and waste management players in Kuwait to advance recycling infrastructure and help build better consumer awareness around recycling to minimize waste from ending up in the landfill. Rashed Al Munae, Deputy CEO, United Beverage Company, said, “We share PepsiCo’s vision for a circular economy and are committed to contributing to Kuwait’s vision for a more sustainable future. We hope consumers opt for the new packaging, and we will continue our efforts to offer them more positive choices that are kinder to the planet.” As part of PepsiCo’s pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) strategy launch in 2021, it has announced a goal to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040 and reduce virgin plastic per serving by 50% across its global food and beverage portfolio by 2030. 4 Guide to Successful Blown Film Production Typically blown film is used in many heavy industries such as, agricultural film bags, industry packaging, shrink film, stretch film, consumer packaging, food wrapping, transport packaging, Laminating film, barrier film and multilayer film. It is essential to know which film blowing process will suite your need, blown film extrusion is carried out vertically upwards, however horizontal and downward extrusion processes are now becoming more common.

7 Sustainable Multilayer Barrier Packaging Packaging must comply with food safety regulations to protect the consumer, therefore multilayer structures are essential in preserving and protecting the food. Food packaging has seen significant changes over recent decades with demand for pre-packaged food increasing, hence the requirement for research and development in barrier and shelf life extending materials.
