Como ouro sobre azul: Religião e arte em São Miguel e os Açores Por Ilyne J. Castellanos B.A. Global Studies & B.A. Spanish and Portuguese, Class of 2023 12 Um dia na aula, me lembro que minha professora proclamou algo como “vocês também seriam religiosos se vivessem em cima de vulcões!”. Segundo a revista Público em 2012, “91,9% da população açoriana professa a religião católica, contra uma média nacional de 79,5% de católicos.” Especificamente, nos Açores, o culto ao Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres é muito forte, e a cada ano, milhares de pessoas chegam a comemorar a figura de arte sagrada que para muitos, da esperança, e algumas vezes, milagres. Quando o programa de estudos ao exterior me chegou a visitar o Convento de Esperança em Ponta Delgada, a figura decadente, escondida atrás de uma cerca e vidro se contrastava com o seu ambiente. Os ricos vermelhos, brilhantes brancos, e flores de centos de cores se vêem muito diferente das ruas e casas de preto e branco que cobriam a cidade. Combinado com azulejos detalhadamente pintados, a capela do convento revelou algo para mim; nos Açores, a arte e a religião tem uma relação simbiótica. Esta pintura, pintada por Domingos Rebelo foi a primeira vez que eu observei como a religião impacta a vida cotidiana e o arte na vida açoriana. Retratando um homem recebendo uma benção durante uma procissão religiosa, Rebelo cria um ambiente que parece tipicamente açoriano. No fundo da pintura, o Santo Cristo dos Milagres faz uma aparição em forma de um pequeno quadro na casa cheia e ocupada. Também presente na foto é um pequeno altar, provavelmente cuidado atentamente pelo dono da casa.

13 Ao redor da ilha existem muitos exemplos de arte religiosa não só nas igrejas e outros lugares públicos, mas dentro das casas. A seguinte foto foi tirada na Quinta do Agricultor, onde a vida camponesa do passado é recriada e preservada. A casinha humilde era simples, mas ainda tinha um altar pequeno e um lugar onde a família pudesse rezar quando não estavam trabalhando na fazenda. Decorado com figuras pequenas e com cores neutras, o altar foi diferente a outros altares que observei em outros estabelecimentos, mas no contexto de uma humilde casa no campo, tem sentido que não vai ser tão elaborado como outros altares na cidade ou em casas ricas. Durante meu tempo em Portugal, aprendi a frase, “Ouro sobre azul,” e como foi derivado do arte barroco. Várias igrejas em São Miguel experimentam com diferentes formas de arte barroco, mas o barroco portuguese pode ser distinguido de seus contemporâneos por causa de uma característica: os azulejos. Os azulejos aparecem em todos lugares em Portugal, desde os pisos às igrejas os diferentes estilos refletem padrões simétricos, paisagens, eventos, e muito mais. É muito comum ver casas que tem azulejos com imagens de santos ou iconografia religiosa acima das portas ou perto das entradas. A imagem à esquerda vem da fábrica de azulejos onde observei como essas peças de arte são criadas por artistas locais. A técnica clássica de pintar os azulejos depende do azul cobalto. Esta técnica ressalta nas igrejas barrocas que usam elementos tradicionalmente usados como marcenaria elaborada e pinturas esplêndidas. O uso extravagante de diferentes estilos de arte e arquitetura foi aparente na Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas onde os tetos cobertos de ouro olhavam para os azulejos elaborados. Os diferentes estilos com influências asiáticas criaram uma versão do barroco que não tinha visto antes. A religião impacta a vida açoriana intimamente, e no mundo criativo e artístico, esse impacto ainda não se perde. A arte reflecte a alma de um povo, e nos Açores não há excepção.

Plantas nos Açores: Algumas plantas impressionantes exóticas e nativas Quando cheguei à ilha, fiquei surpresa e impressionada com a diversidade de plantas aqui. Muitos eu já tinha visto – na Europa, na América Latina, no meu próprio jardin em Boston, e na estufa da minha faculdade, a Wellesley Global Flora Greenhouse. Eu gostei muito do meu tempo explorando os jardins em Ponta Delgada e queria compartilhar alguns desenhos que demonstram a enorme variedade de plantas nos Açores – dentro e fora desses jardins formais. Cuatro Jardins Jardim Botânico José do Canto Jardim Botânico António Borges Parque Terra Nostra Andrew 2 Em junho, não havia muitas plantas em flor aqui. Valeu a pena, no entanto, ir ver as formas impressionantes das árvores. Algumas das maiores árvores que eu já vi estavam aqui – o tipo de árvore que parece ~magnética~ para mim. O meu favorito era o Queensland Kauri, uma grande árvore da Austrália, perto da entrada da frente. Eu queria abraçá-lo e passar todo o dia olhando para ele e sua grandeza.Também há mais de 600 camélias aqui. Eu visitei cuatro jardins durante o meu tempo aqui Camellia, 13 June '22 Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Gostei muito desse jardim porque é muito interativo – há muitas cavernas e miradouros feitos pelo homem para explorar. Não passamos muito tempo aqui, mas os jardins eram muito impressionantes. Eu vi um monte de camélias. O exploramos so um pouco, mas era muito bonito e bem conservado. Parecia muito ~limpo~. Este é um jardim romântico clássico. 15

As hortênsias - "hydrangeas" - são a planta mais reconhecida dos Açores. Os vi por toda a ilha, em jardins públicos e privados e na natureza - especialmente do lado das estradas. Também vi flores de hibisco em muitos jardins aqui, com suas flores impressionantes de todas as cores diferentes. todos os desenhos e escrita feitos por Emma Andrew, Wellesley College, verão de 2022 Muitas plantas são capazes de prosperar nos Açores por causa do clima e do solo rico em minerais vulcânicos. No entanto, nenhuma das plantas que eu desenhei são nativas dos Açores. Não há muitas plantas nativas plantadas intencionalmente nos jardins aqui; a maioria das plantas vistas foram trazidas para as ilhas de origens de todo o mundo. ~~~ As pessoas trazem plantas para novos lugares por vários motivos. Um é para comer, para a agricultura. Isto é evidente em toda a ilha na combinação única de plantas agrícolas: bananas, vinhos, ananás, laranjas (no passado), etc. Ficou visível quando falamos de economia na aula e quando viajamos em toda a ilha para visitar diferentes tipos de quintas. Mas outro motivo para trazer plantas é simples: porque são lindas. Os colonos trazem sua própria estética - sua ideia do que é belo - quando chegam a um novo lugar e a impõem a esse lugar. É interessante ver como isso é visível nesses jardins. O que vemos quando caminhamos por esses jardins é a estética dos homens que originalmente viveram nesses lugares nos séculos XVIII e XIX. Esses jardins serviam como uma forma de mostrar sua riqueza. Da mesma forma que o estilo barroco foi usado na arquitetura - com as combinações dramáticas e extravagantes de arte e detalhes - esses jardins estão cheios de plantas exóticas e impressionantes que são colocadas juntas de maneiras interessantes. ~~~ Andrew 4 17

Nature, Culture, Awareness and Identity By Michelle Hamm B.A. Sociology & B.A. Legal Studies, Class of 2023 View from Thomas Place - 3rd Floor Balcony I often sit here and reflect about my time in Sao Miguel, but I also sit and reflect on the things I can see and observe, and the things that I have not been able to see. This drawing will always take me back to my first day in Ponta Delgada because it reminds me of the happiness I felt while eating my first Azorian meal that had just been delivered to me (because I was too shy and afraid to go out). After that day, I made it a personal challenge to explore a new place everyday and to do my best to engage with the Azorian community. I made one Portuguese friend, and I feel deeply grateful for the sense of community I gained with the people around me. Taxidermy Turtle Two weeks ago, I ventured into the Museo Carlos Machado, Nucleo de Santa Barbara, where I explored the wonders of the animal kingdom, but particularly sea life. I was very impressed by the different species that the museum has, but at the same time, everything was dead. I had diverse feelings rushing through my body, such as awe, admiration, sadness, and at times, disgust. All animals were beautiful, but they were lives of the past. 18

I felt empty because I was admiring death, but I wouldn’t support keeping animals in captivity for human entertainment. As I walked and kept exploring, I saw a beautiful big turtle that was displayed as a main attraction. This turtle had sad eyes, but it was glowing with the science behind taxidermy. I felt inspired to draw this turtle because turtles are my mom’s favorite animal, and I miss her. I also saw a great white shark, and surprisingly, a penguin. I have never seen a penguin in my life, so I was surprised that they were that big (around 4 feet tall). Venturing inside the Carlos Machado museum made me appreciate life and family in a way I have not experienced before. Quinta do Agricultor - Vaca It was a wonderful experience to visit Quinta do Agricultor, and share moments with friends, nature, and animals. I drew this cow because it helped me feel less alienated with the dairy products I consume on a daily basis in Sao Miguel. For the most part, I do not reflect much about where my food comes from, but seeing this cow provide milk for people helped me understand the labor and effort that goes behind the production of food. On another note, I have been pescaterian for about six years, and although sometimes I crave meat, being in contact with beautiful animals like this cow, assures me that I have made the right choice by not eating meat. In conclusion, these drawings are part of my Ponta Delgada experience. When at times I feel anxious or overwhelmed, drawing helps me stay grounded and grateful for the things that I am experiencing right now. My experience in the Azores helped me discover new parts of myself, while allowing me to grow and become resilient to aspects that are out of my comfort zone. 19

Mensagens Políticas e o Espaço Público Por William Roddy B.A. Geography/ Applied Linguistics & Portuguese Minor, Class of 2023 Este conglomerado de declarações públicas levanta questões importantes sobre a sociedade Açoriana e o público. Obviamente, se estas obras existem, então deve existir também uma necessidade para elas, mostrando certas lutas políticas em Ponta Delgada. Esta necessidade vem fora das formas tradicionais de poder, assim explicando porque são graffitis e cartazes e não uma placa colocada pela Câmara Municipal de Ponta Delgada. Relacionado, o público tem mais acesso para definir o espaço público (quem se encontra bem-vindo ou não) através de obras assim em vez da burocracia tradicional. Por isso há de perguntar: como podemos criar espaços públicos mais inclusivos? Quem tem acesso a construir o espaço comum? Que valores se refletem nos espaços que frequentamos? Perguntas incisivas podem ajudar a pensar sobre a importância do espaço em afetar como nos sentimos no mundo. Através destes símbolos em Ponta Delgada e São Miguel, aprendi muito sobre a política açoriana (e mundial), e a necessidade do discurso público. 20

A World Itself The location of the Azores is incredibly remote - lying in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Such distance from any other country or territory brings a sense of isolation and comfort. Although secluded, the island need not worry about the conflicts that occur thousands of kilometers away. A world in itself. SCP Youth Graffiti with the signature “SCP youth” tag can be found all around the town of Ponta Delgada. SCP Youth is the junior division for famous Portuguese football club Sporting. Yet, SCP Youth may be more than just a developmental league. Burger Rei The first meal I ever had in the Azores was an XL Whopper at the Burger King. When stomachs start growling, and no other restaurants seem to be open the Americans turn to good ole’ fast food. A sign of homely comfort in a land so far away. Future for Azorean Dair y and Beef Industry By Do Khym B.A. Geography, Class of 2022 The Azorean dairy industry produces 30% of total Portuguese dairy although Azoreans constitute only 2.4% of the Portuguese population. This is due to the islands suitable environment which offers pasture-based feeding thanks to abundant precipitation (1930 mm/year) and yearlong amenable temperate climate (15-25o C). Because the humidity brings in tropical as well as subtropical conditions to the islands, this makes the islands propitious for grazing vegetation and hence good dairy production. Occupying 48.82% of the total land area in the Azores, the agriculture is an important sector of the islands’ economy, and the biggest of the agriculture is the dairy sector which utilizes 39.63% of the total Azorean lands in 2018. The trend of the cattle industry after COVID is to turn to meat production instead of dairy. This comes amidst milk producers asking for better milk prices, in order to offset rising production costs. Non-crowded pasture environment in the Azores ensures longer productive lives for the cows and lower disease rates such as acidosis or mastitis. 27

A Cradle In The Azores By Barbe Callister B.A. Anthropology, Class of 2022 My poem is dedicated to my son Captain Patrick Phillip Mora. He passed away while I was in the Azores. It was exceedingly difficult for me to understand why I was meant to be here away in Ponta Delgada, Azores when he left this world. But I am starting to understand now. It was a gift that I was to be delicately cradled among the authentic people of the Azores and that of so many new friends from UC Berkeley study abroad. Albeit, in life we are to experience it all, the good, the bad, and the painful. Therefore I am sharing with you not only the beauty I saw in the Azores but also that of my grief of my darkest hours. Oh my adoring Son Patrick, I found where you should sprawl. It happened oh so quick. At first I didn’t notice at all. The changes in the foliage Is what caused my eyes to stall. As blades of deep green grass peeking up through a volcanic wall. Ascending upward in contrast like a vertical waterfall Ferns and flowers, as remnant of the past Lining the road as if an altar call. I’d argue that Lisbon isn’t the most colorful and brightest of cities but there’s something charming about its monochromatic look and I think the warm tones and coloring allows you to almost feel the suffocating heat of the city. 35

Street Art and Graffiti in Lisbon By Liam Chok B.A. Geography, Class of 2024 Street art is an unmissable element of the urban landscape. It is an integral part of city culture, providing space for aesthetic expression and political activism to converge. Out of the countless photos I captured of Lisbon’s street art, I chose to share six with the zine. I also include a poem written by Manuel Alegre to accompany these photos. This poem is written on the wall of Lisbon’s Museum Aljube Resistência e Liberdade, written in 1965. Mesmo na noite mais triste em tempo de servidão há sempre alguém que resiste há sempre alguém que diz não.
