Dear Parents, It is off to New York for a slice of American history that will inform and delight our scholars! This month’s Principal’s book, Balloons Over Broadway, written by Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet, will sweep our scholars right off their feet! Sweet offers a rich and vibrant glimpse into the life of puppeteer extraordinaire Tony Sarg, the creative genius who invented the giant balloons that fly over the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The upside-down helium-filled balloon puppets we see today are Sarg’s legacy, an anecdote of perseverance, dedication, and tenacity. Balloons Over Broadway floats into our lives at the perfect time and is reminiscent of our school - a place where dreams are born, creativity is celebrated, and results flourish. Sarg loved children and we love sharing your scholar’s love of learning with you!

Melissa Sweet has illustrated nearly 100 children's books and has received a Caldecott Honor Medal for a River of Words by Jen Bryant. She’s also been awarded two New York Times “Best Illustrated” citations. We hope she will be available via Skype to visit our school this month.
