INTRODUCTION According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Committee on Nursing, the traditional roles and responsibilities of nurses are no longer sufficient to meet the changing needs of society. As a result, nurses must break away from traditional practices and adapt new strategies. The role of nurses has expanded beyond the traditional hospital setting, and they are now considered professional healthcare providers. Nurses can now be found working in a variety of settings, such as in the community, schools, workplaces, during disasters, and in home care. With the expansion of their roles, nurses have access to a wider range of career opportunities as they continue to advance their education and increase their clinical competencies.

As a primary care provider, nurses can improve patient care by increasing access to services and reducing gaps in care, preventing medication errors, reducing infection rates, and facilitating patient transitions from hospital to home.





Nurses' role as Nurse Practitioners in Midwifery (NPM):

Nurse Practitioners in Midwifery (NPMs) are specialized nurses who provide high-quality and accessible childbirth care to mothers and newborns in collaboration with physicians in public healthcare facilities. They have completed a competency-based 18 month training program and focus on promoting women's health throughout their life-cycle using evidence-based knowledge, skills, and behavior, with a focus on woman-centered and familycentered care.

Role of nurses as nurse practitioner in critical care. As Nurse Practitioners in critical care, nurses provide advanced level of care to critically ill patients and their families in ICUs, they have completed postgraduate specialized program focusing on competency in critical care nursing.

They have a responsibility for specific patient protection, disease prevention, rehabilitation, treatment of minor ailments, referral, and community mobilization. They specialize in areas such as maternal and child health services, school health services, family health care, and assist in implementing information, education, and communication programs. They can also serve as care coordinators, disease managers, and community liaisons.

NURSE AS A CHANGE AGENT:

Nurses can serve as change agents within the healthcare system by utilizing their knowledge and skills to promote positive attitudes and encourage innovation. Through fostering a mindset of learning and risk-taking, nurses can lead the way in implementing new and improved methods of care.

NURSE AS A RESEARCHER: By participating in research, nurses have the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the professional knowledge base and support evidence-based practice. Research enables nurses to critically evaluate current practices and identify areas for improvement, and contribute to the development of new and effective interventions. Additionally, nurses can use research findings to inform their practice and make evidence-based decisions that lead to better outcomes for patients. Research is an essential aspect of nursing profession, it helps nurses to learn and grow, and improve their skills and knowledge, which in turn benefits the patients and the healthcare system.
