ALEJANDRA REGALADO Alejandra Regalado was born in 1977, in Mexico City, and currently lives and works in New York. She was awarded the Individual Artist Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, and she received the First Place Professional Photographer at the Festival Internacional de la Imagen, in Mexico. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Mexico and the U.S. Alejandra has been an artist in residence of the Galería de la Raza, San Francisco 2014, the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago 2013, Latin American Arts Festival, Boise State University and SPARC, New York 2012. Alejandra is currently working on Intimacy, a three part series that will feature images of people form New York, Mexico City and Berlin. She is also collaborating with a group of artists and intellectuals to create an intervention at the Lacandon Jungle in Chiapas, Mexico, in February 2016, to create awareness of preservation and sustainability in the area. In Reference To - Mexican Women In The United States : Curated by Patricia Mendoza In Reference To - Mexican Women of the U.S.explores issues of cultural identity, femininity and the relationship to these themes through personal objects. The full series is comprised of 500 portraits of Mexican women living in California, Idaho, Oregon, Illinois, New York and Texas. The portraits are paired with photographs of objects that represent each woman’s connection with her homeland. This monograph includes a selection of 25 portraits, curated by Patricia Mendoza. Alejandra Regalado [email protected] | www.alejandraregalado.com – Alejandra Regalado’s portraits are metaphorical hinges between past and present. Using a stylized passport format for both her subjects and their chosen objects, she touches on both the nostalgic attachment to perceived memories and the stark realities of living as a woman in a foreign country; pushing and pulling through an infinite loop of intersecting lives. In these portraits, one senses pride, bravery and determination, just as much as pain, acceptance and maybe even submission to events beyond anyone’s control. But overall the images prevail on us with the integrity and dignity of each person; a strength of character patently forged by the immigrant experience. There is no romanticism in these images. The pairings of subjects and objects are almost taxonomic in their succinctness. Alejandra seems intent to archive and catalogue each narrative to better grasp the significance of each subject’s journey, as well as her own. Patricia Mendoza

Erika S. Torreón, Coahuila – Richmond, California Abundance Check My Sweetie taught me 10 years ago to write my own abundance check. Her name is Chitvan and she’s a very special person in my life. She said: “Write a check every new moon, place it under the moon rays and that’s all.” I’ve been doing it through all these years, I wrote this last check two months before coming to the US. And whether on a high or a low I don’t get upset, I’m always at peace. My check is material and spiritual abundance. Cheque de la Abundancia Hace 10 años que mi Sweety (yo la llamo así) me enseñó a hacer mi cheque de la abundancia. Su nombre es Chitvan y es una persona muy especial en mi vida. Ella me dijo: “Se llena un cheque cada luna nueva, se coloca bajo los rayos de luna y listo”. Todos estos años he venido haciendo cheques, dos meses antes de venir a E.E.U.U hice este último. Tenga altas o bajas yo no me altero, siempre estoy en paz, mi cheque es abundancia material y espiritual.

I’m very lucky to have had many experiences. I went from a very small place to a town, and later to Mexico City. And look where I am today! Violeta L. México, Distrito Federal – San Francisco, California Xoloitzcuintle Dog This dog is of Mexican origin and several indigenous cultures had contact with them. In Mexica mythology, they were the guardians and guides that accompanied the souls of the dead on their journey to Micatlan, or what is the same, the underworld. Usually, they were sacrificed and buried along with the dead, in their tombs. Perro Xoloitzcuintle Este perro es de origen mexicano y varias culturas indígenas tuvieron contacto con ellos. En la mitología Mexica, eran los guardianes y guías que acompañaban a las almas de los difuntos en su viaje al Mictlán, o lo que era el inframundo. Usualmente, los Xoloitzcuintles eran sacrificados y enterrados junto con los muertos, en sus tumbas.

Ximena A. México, Distrito Federal – San Francisco, California Jaguar Warrior The Jaguar warrior is a typical element on the Day of the Holy Innocents. The Day of the Dead and the Day of the Holy Innocents are the only Aztec celebrations that weren’t abolished by Spanish conquerors. Every detail like the jade necklace, plumage and hand painting preserved on this warrior give it warmth and make it look very special. Guerrero Jaguar El Guerrero Jaguar es un elemento muy típico en el Día de Los Santos Inocentes. El Día de los Muertos y los Santos Inocentes son de las únicas celebraciones indígenas que los españoles no abolieron durante la conquista. Los detalles como el collar de jade, el plumaje y la pintura a mano le dan al este guerrero calidez y lo hacen ver muy diferente.

I am Mexican to the bone and my parents knew that their little girl needed the blood of their land, which is not drawn and cannot be seen. This is the connection with my mother and mother earth. Consuelo M. Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes – Chicago, Illinois Wedding Dress Years ago, I wanted to turn my wedding dress into a First Communion dress for my first daughter. But my firstborn, as well as my second child, was a boy. Yet, I still had the hope to someday use the fabric of the dress to make my granddaughter’s First Communion attire. However, my first grandchild was male, and the second one, too. Just when I had lost all hope, a granddaughter was born! Then I offered my dress, but my son said: “No, your dress will remain as it is.” I wore it for my 25th wedding anniversary, and I doubt I will ever wear it again. Vestido de Novia Para volver a usar mi vestido de novia, quise hacer un vestido de primera comunión para la primera hija que yo tuviera. Mi primogénito fue varón, mi segundo hijo, también. Aún así, yo conservaba la esperanza de algún día hacer, con la tela de mi vestido, un vestido para mi primera nieta. Nuevamente, el primero fue hombre y el segundo también. Ya cuando había perdido yo toda esperanza ¡nació mi nieta! Así que ofrecí mi vestido, pero mi hijo me dijo: “No, tu vestido se queda como está”. Volví a usar mi vestido de novia en mi aniversario de 25 años de casados, y dudo volvérmelo a poner jamás.

This was one of the last ones I made for her, before she passed away. It is the only keepsake of hers that I could bring with me when I emigrated, in June 1973. Vestido Hecho Para Mi Madre Yo estudié para modista, le hice muchos vestidos a mi madre. Este fue uno de los últimos que le hice, antes de que ella falleciera. Es el único recuerdo de ella que pude traerme cuando emigré, en junio del 1973.

Querétaro, Querétaro – Brooklyn, New York Plush Leopard Toy Bought at Mexico City airport The poet Forrest Gander gave me this plush toy as a gift because he heard my mother, Valerie Mejer, saying that she needed to buy me a present because she hadn’t seen me in many days. I named it Forrest in his honor and I loved it since the first day, so much, that even six years later I still sleeping beside it. It was the first thing I packed on my trip to New York. Leopardo de Peluche Comprado en el Aeropuerto de la Ciudad de México El poeta Forrest Gander me regaló este peluche porque escuchó decir a mi mamá, Valerie Mejer, que tenía que comprarme un regalo porque llevaba varios días sin verme. Lo bauticé Forrest en honor a él y lo he querido desde el primer día, tanto, que siempre duermo con él aún ahora después de seis años. Es la primera cosa que empaqué al venir a Nueva York.

Liliana V. México, Distrito Federal – Austin, Texas Blue Hen Pitcher My husband, George, bought this cántaro in Mexico over 30 years ago. We have kept it on the mantelpiece at our house throughout our life together. I love that it is made of clay; it’s a reminder of the connection to the land of Mexico. Like much of our art, this blue hen has a playful, dreamy and festive head. It amuses me to see the cántaro every day. When I was a little girl, I had a pet chicken that became a hen and was called Totis. Cántaro de Gallina Azul Mi esposo, George, compró este cántaro en México hace ya más de 30 años. Lo hemos conservado sobre la repisa de la chimenea en nuestra casa, durante toda nuestra vida conjunta. Me encanta porque es de barro; por lo que me recuerda la conexión con la tierra de México. Al igual que gran parte de nuestro arte, la gallina azul tiene una cabeza juguetona, fantasiosa y lúdica. Me cae en gracia ver el cántaro todos los días. De chiquita yo tenía como mascota un pollito que se volvió gallina y se llamaba Totis.

Mercedes F. México, Distrito Federal – Houston, Texas ‘Groom and Sandal’ - Coquette Series The fabric is hand made and it is sold in Mexican markets. It was embroidered by a young woman from a small Michoacan town called Copula, it has her signature: Laura. I handmade the paper, I sewed it and painted a ‘coqueta’. It is an inheritance from my Mexico. It was exhibited at the Acuarela Museum of Coyoacan, in Mexico City. ‘Novio y Huarache’ - Serie Coquetas La tela de manta es hecha a mano; se vende en los mercados mexicanos. Fue bordado por una joven de un pequeño pueblo michoacano llamado Copula; tiene su firma: Laura. Yo hice el papel a mano, lo cocí y le pinté una ‘coqueta’. Es herencia de mi México. El Museo de Acuarela de Coyoacán lo exhibió, en la ciudad de México.
