Interna onal Migrants Day       The year 2000 the United Na ons decided to honor the journey of migrants with their own day; on Dec. 18, 1990, the General Assembly adopted the interna onal conven on on the protec on of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families. Throughout human history, migra on has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a be er life. Mary and Joseph .… two guaranteed statues in a Catholic church; it’s not uncommon to hear folks refer to the “Mary side” and the “Joseph side” of the church. Their story takes center stage in our Scripture readings this Sunday, and a happy coincidence that it happens to be on Interna onal Migrants Day. Mary and Joseph were migrants too, forced to head to Egypt when Herod threatened their child. Like many families, in the past and today, they were obliged to escape danger and they had to do what no one wants to do: leave home and rela ves, language and familiarity. Secretary of State John Kerry noted: “Our own naon is built upon migrants’ dreams.” As global corporaons con nue to go where they please, is it right to restrict the movement of deserving individuals? We may view these people as aliens or criminals, undesirables or the undocumented. We might also call them “Mary” and “Joseph” …. brave families who deserve protec on and help. Día Internacional del Migrante El año 2000 las Naciones Unidas decidieron honrar el caminar de migrantes con su propio día; el 18 de dic. 1990, la Asamblea General adoptó el convenio sobre la protección de los derechos de obreros migrantes y miembros de sus familias. En toda la historia del ser humano, migración ha sido una expresión valiente del deseo del individuo a confrontar la adversidad y buscar una vida mejor. María y José … dos imágenes que se va a encontrar en un templo católico; hasta que se oye gente iden ficar los lados del templo “el lado de la Virgen” y “el lado de San José”. Hoy las lecturas de Misa los ponen a María y José en el centro, una coincidencia feliz al ser hoy el Día Internacional del Migrante. María y José fueron migrantes, obligados a salir a Egipto cuando Herodes buscaba matar al niño Jesús. Como muchas familias, en el pasado y hoy en día, fueron obligados a escapar el peligro e hicieron lo que nadie quiere hacer: dejar su casa y familia, idioma y todo lo que les era familiar. El Secretario del Estado John Kerry notó: “Nuestra propia nación ha sido construido sobre los sueños de migrantes.” Corporaciones internacionales van donde quieren, ¿Cómo que restringimos el movimiento de personas que lo merecen? ¿Los consideramos como criminales o no-deseados? Podemos llamarlos “María” y “José”, familias valientes quienes merecen protección y ayuda. Hay que reflexionar en esto.

La paciencia es otra de las cosas por la que muchos de nosotros luchamos. Queremos que las cosas vayan de acuerdo a nuestro plan y a nuestra agenda. Cualquier cambio genera ansiedad y miedo.
