Sterling graduated from Killeen High School in 1983. Sterling had a union of over three decades with Loretta Brown, and among his family and friends formalized their marriage on April 18th, 2015 in San Antonio, TX. He attended the University of Maryland in 1989-1990. Sterling served his country proudly in The United States Army as Motor Transport Specialist. He gave of himself in Operation Desert Storm as SPC Specialist. He received the United States Army Certificate of Merit for Safety on July 20th, 1990, The Army Commendation Medal from May 1st, 1989 to June 1st, 1992; the Certificate of Achievement 4th Battalion United States Army, Europe, and Seventh Army Oct 18th, 1991; the Certificate of Commendation vii Corps Saudi Arabia Operation Desert Storm. Sterling was Honorably Discharged on June 6th, 1995, SPC USAR. The epitome of integrity and dependability, he faithfully gave over 30 years of service at Oak Farms, much in the capacity of supervisor.

Sterling experienced profound satisfaction in the cornerstones of humanity: love, peace, and happiness. From this foundation, he had but few wants. Sterling loved spending time with family, was dedicated to the meticulous care of his yard, barbecued expertly, and took pleasure in watching sporting events with loved ones. He delighted in music and the celebration of life. He possessed a reassuring and infectious smile, anchoring all who gathered at his home to enjoy the stuff of life. A universal kindred soul, in his presence you always felt connected, cared for, and loved. Sterling is survived by his wife Loretta (Penny); his mother Addie King; children Savanah and Shanai Brown, Shumane Jackson and Taylor Benavides; siblings Michael Brown, Felecia Brown-Itson, and Draper Stinson; grandchildren Malingder Brown, Bravien Brown, Sutton Foster, and Eliud Benavides. Sterling—loving husband, model son, devoted father, loyal brother, jubilant grandfather—we love and miss you tremendously. All those who knew Sterling will accept and adopt his wishes that you revel and delight in the balance of your days, with those whom you cherish. To that end, we lean on the guidance of our forefather, among the wisest in human history: “Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now, take what’s left and live it properly. What doesn’t transmit light creates its own darkness.”
