St. Vincent’s will be presenting its 13 th annual concert on Sunday, December 4 at 4PM. The program will feature the adult, youth choirs, soloists and musicians of the parish. Admission is free. A free will offering will be appreciated. Light refreshments will be served afterwards in Robinson Hall. Please save the date and join us at this festive event which will help usher in the true meaning of Christmas.

Simbang Gabi The “Simbang Gabi” is a long treasured Philippine tradition originally a series of “dawn masses” for nine consecutive days before Christmas Eve.

Here at Saint Vincent’s we will begin the Simbang Gabi Masses on the evening of December 15 at 7:30PM. If you would like to offer Mass Intentions for one of the Masses please fill out one the envelopes in the vestibule of the Church and give to one of the priests or stop by the rectory office.

Oplatky The Christmas Wafers used at the Christmas Eve meal in many Eastern European and Baltic Countries are available for you to continue this tradition in your own home. Each package of the wafers has the history of this beautiful custom printed on it. They are available for you to take home in the Sacristy after all Masses. Safeguarding Children and Addressing Abuse: The Archdiocese Addresses Victims’ Concerns — Since his arrival in 2001 and his participation in the drafting of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, Archbishop Myers has on many occasions either individually or with bishops in the United States, with the Holy Father, and with clergy throughout the world, acknowledged publicly the pain that sexual offenders inside the Church have inflicted on the innocent. At Chrism Masses before the entire presbyterate and parish representatives of the Archdiocese, in media interviews, in statements issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and in essays and columns, Archbishop Myers has stated that “a Church which spends the largest portion of its resources and the largest portion of its personnel in serving children, can never, and will never, condone anything which harms those children…We also extend our apology and our assurance of support and help to those who have been harmed and who are seeking healing and support.” Beyond words, however, are actions. Assistance to victims, training and background checks of staff and volunteers, reporting accusations to civil authorities, removing clergy with substantiated accusations – these are clear indications that the Archbishop and the Archdiocese abhor child abuse. What’s more, 20 years ago, the Archdiocese was one of the first dioceses in the country to establish a formal Review Board of experts with legal, law enforcement, clinical and investigative background to examine allegations of abuse and recommend to the Archbishop action under Church law.

ASCA NEWS ASCA’s choir performed a selection of holiday music during Bayonne’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. ASCA’s Student Council sponsors a collection of nonperishable food items and paper goods each month. During November, the items collected will be donated to Catholic Charities Emergency Food and Nutrition Network. Upcoming events: Children’s Christmas Bazaar th th will be December 5 & 6 , Breakfast with Santa will be December 11 and the Christmas Concert will take place December 14. ASCA continues to collect box tops and soup labels for education. This collection enables our school to purchase equipment for physical education classes. Background on the Gospel Reading In this week's Gospel Reading and next week's, our Advent preparation for Christmas invites us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. In this week's Gospel, Matthew describes the work and preaching of John the Baptist. John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets of Israel, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. In fact, the description of John found in this reading is reminiscent of the description of the prophet Elijah (2 Kings 1:8). In this reading, John directs a particularly pointed call to repentance to the Pharisees and Sadducees, parties within the Jewish community of the first century. John marks the conversion of those who seek him out with a baptism of repentance. Other groups in this period are thought to have practiced ritual washings for similar purposes, and John's baptism may have been related to the practices of the Essenes, a Jewish sect of the first century. John's baptism can be understood as an anticipation of Christian

baptism. In this passage, John himself alludes to the difference between his baptism and the one yet to come: “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance . . . He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11). In this reading, John makes very clear that his relationship to the Messiah yet to come (Jesus) is one of service and subservience: “. . . the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals” (Matthew 3:11). In the context of Matthew's Gospel, today's passage is followed by Jesus' baptism by John, an event that is attested to in all four of the Gospels and appears to have been the start of Jesus' public ministry. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus in the first century, we, too, are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by our repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives, as John did, the coming of the Lord.

Christmas Carols th

This Sunday, December 4 , our parish will th be presenting its 13 annual Christmas Concert, Carols By Candlelight at 4PM. During the concert the audience will be invited to sing along with the choirs on several holiday favorites including Silent Night, Joy To The World and O Come All Ye Faithful. The various choirs will perform other Christmas carols, some well known and others not so familiar but equally as beautiful. Below is a brief introduction to a few of these carols. Sing We Nowell was written and composed by Father James Chepponis, a Roman Catholic priest of the Pittsburgh Diocese who was ordained in 1985. For 25 years he composed a new carol annually which he sent out as his yearly Christmas card. This piece is one of those carols. Carol Of The Bells is a Ukrainian piece composed by Mykola Leontovich as a New Year’s carol. In 1936 Peter Wilhousky, born in Passaic NJ, heard this song and wrote original English lyrics and arranged the music into what we now know as the Carol Of The Bells. Wilhousky went on to become an extraordinary choral conductor. Con Mi Burrito Sabanero (The Little Donkey From The Savannah) is a Venezuelan carol created by musician and Venezuelan composer Hugo Blanco in 1972. The carol tells the story of a little

donkey who is on a journey to Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth. It gained popularity in the Latin American World when it was recorded by the children’s group, La Rondallita, in the mid 1970’s. Dormi, Dormi (Sleep, Sleep) is a traditional Italian Christmas carol that is especially popular on the island of Corsica. It is a lullaby sung by the Virgin Mary to the Christ Child. In the United States it is a popular piece used by music educators to instruct student in the importance of using pure vowel sounds which are prominent in the Italian language. Do You Hear What I Hear? Was composed by a husband and wife team in October 1962. This carol was written as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The song was originally recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale in 1962. It went on to become a Christmas classic the following year when Bing Crosby recorded it and then performed it that Christmas season on a Bob Hope Christmas Special. The Little Drummer Boy is based on a Czech carol and first gained prominence on the world stage by the Trapp Family Singers of “The Sound of Music” fame. The Harry Simeone Chorale, the same singing group that introduced Do You Hear What I Hear? To the world recorded the carol in 1958 and it became a best selling single on the music charts. Simeone, the conductor of the chorale, was born in Newark, NJ. This is only a few of the songs which will be performed at our Christmas Concert. Please plan on being with us this Sunday at 4PM.
