Territorial expansion writing By: Adeline Deveaux Did you know that Measles, Cholera, and Dysentery combined killed over 320,000 people! I believe that all these diseases can be prevented. My evidence is that measles is able to be prevented, cholera is a disease not hard to prevent, and dysentery can be prevented from getting. Measles Measles is able to be prevented. Measles is caused by a RNA virus. The effect is a really bad skin rash. It can be very serious and last several weeks. Symptoms are cough, runny nose, sore throat, and inflamed eyes. Measles can also cause death. Measles can spread through coughing and sneezing from an infected person. How you can prevent measles is by making sure that you ask your friends if they're sick/infected so you don’t get sick if you're going to their house. This evidence shows what measles is and how it can be prevented. Cholera

Cholera is a disease that is not hard to prevent. Cholera is caused by you drinking and/or eating something with Cholera bacteria such as dirty water. Symptoms are diarrhea and dehydration. Rarely shocks and seizures happen in severe cases of cholera. Cholera can also cause death if not treated. Cholera can go away in about a week if not treated. But don’t worry cholera happens in Africa and other places not the U.S.A. This evidence shows that Cholera is not hard to get but you can prevent it. Dysentery Dysentery can be prevented. The cause of Dysentery is bacterial or parasitic infections. Symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and malaise. It can also cause death. Dysentery usually lasts 3-7 days before ending. All ages can get dysentery. Dysentery is most common in the U.S.A. To prevent it is by washing your hands after using the restroom and before making food, there are other ways to prevent it but those are just a few. This evidence shows that dysentery can be prevented.

I believe that these diseases can be prevented from entering your body. Measles is caused by a RNA virus and you get a really bad skin rash.cholera is caused by eating or drinking something with cholera bacteria in it such as dirty water. Dysentery is caused by bacterial or parasitic infections. People need to know that these diseases can be prevented otherwise if they don’t they are going to be really stressed. Oregon trail By:Ady I will be talking all about the Oregon trail. Of what those people went through, and what diseases they were and lastly the dangers of it. In 1843 a large number of people started a journey to Oregon to start a new life but it was a 2,000mile route from independence to Missouri then to oregon. First the people started independence then going in to alcove spring then allaway to chimney rock moving on to independence rock, the people would start to run out of supplies and would get sick to,but the people would be a few months in, now going to shoshone falls.By now the people would be nearly or already be there. During the Oregon trail people would get sick from a disease. But I will be talking about a few diseases that were in the Oregon trail. The first disease i will talk about is dysentery, dysentery is a diarrheal illness it would be caused by infected foods.Another illness is cholera it was one of the most feared disease.Cholera was caused by waterborne bacteria thrives in polluted water. And last of all is mountain fever.Mountain fever was not described fully but people still have a little info.mountain fever is typhoid fever. The Oregon trail was scary but you may not know the most dangerous parts of the Oregon trail. So I will be talking about the dangers of it.The first one i'll be talking is the drowning, when crossing rivers it would get really deep sometimes which could cause some drowning and deaths or maybe even get the people sick. And another dangerous part is getting crushed by the wagon if that had happened you would instantly die by getting crushed.don't forget shootings.when hunting for animals sometimes people would accidentally shoot themselves.and lastly is wild animals sometimes

And that's all about the Oregon trail. Then the people would be in Oregon all of the traveling is done.it was really hard to deal with that.it would take 4-5 months.

The Oregon Trail One important trail during Territorial Expansion was the Oregon Trail. The Oregon Trail was a commonly used trail used for traveling west. The trail started in Independence MO, and ended in Willamette Valley OR. The Oregon Trail is 2,170 miles long and took four to six months to complete. The Oregon Trail was very dangerous. About 20,000 out of close to 400,000 people died on the trail. That adds up to about 1 and 10. People were so crazy to move west that some people made some bad decisions. One of these families was the Donner party. They are famous for cannibalism of their dead. The Mormon Trail Another important trail is the Mormon Trail. The Mormon Trail was used by Mormons who were escaping Nauvoo, Illinois because of persecution. The Mormon Trail was 1,400 miles long and crossed through Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa. The trail went from Nauvoo, IL to Salt Lake City UT. The Mormons were a primarily christian group but they also worship their founder, Joseph Smith. The Mormons had their headquarters in Salt Lake City UT. The Trail of Tears The last trail, the Trail of Tears, most affected the Native Americans. The Trail of Tears was used to transport Native Americans to a reservation that took up almost all of OK. This was caused by Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act. The Trail of Tears was devastating. Most of the “Indians” were from the Southeastern Region. One of the most affected by this was the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee tribe is unique because they had a unique way of assigning jobs. The men were the hunters and fighters while the women worked in the farms and kitchens.

CONCLUSION Now that you have learned about the different trails during Westward Expansion, The Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, Trail of Tears, and their causes, pick a trail and find out more about it. Ex. How many people were on the Mormon Trail?

According to The Oregon Encyclopedia, people used the Oregon trail between 1840-1860 to get from Independence, MO to Oregon city, OR. When people were still using the Oregon trail as a way to get around the population went down alot and it went faster than you would think because pregnant women would also pass away because they didn't have any hospitality or starvation and injuries. In this it will talk about what states it went through, the cities it went through, transportation, and how many pioneers made it to Oregon and Washington. Cities: The Oregon trail was REALLY REALLY REALLY long and it went through alot of cities but there are a couple that were pretty helpful while people traveled the Oregon trail because of how many resources they provided. You might have heard of some of them and some maybe not but some of the important cities are listed below. Weston, Missouri, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Atchison, Kansas, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Omaha, Nebraska. These cities played important roles in the Oregon trail. People didn't have cars or planes or trains like we have today; they only had their feet and horses and carriages. It wasn't a very fast and efficient way to go around but it was the best way to get around.

Transportation: There were not that many forms of transportation back then but here are the main three forms of transportation. People would either walk, run, or go buy horse/pony with a carriage.

Pony express Have you ever wondered, what is the Pony express? Well I have the answer to that for you! The Pony express was founded by Alexander Major, William B. Wallden, and William Hepburn Russell. The Pony express was so hard to run, and this will tell you some reasons why. The chapters are What is the Pony express, The first letter, and The pros and cons. What is the Pony express What is the pony express? In the 1858-1860 the fastest way to deliver a letter was by stagecoach, but not for long. The Pony express was a new delivery service that delivered letters from Missori to California from April 1860-October 1861 only lasting 18 months. Instead of using stagecoach they used horses and, young men to deliver letters.

I been a grubbin on a little farm on the flat and windy plains I been a list’nin to the hungry cattle bawl. I’m gonna pack my wife and kids, I’m gonna hit that Oregon Trail this comin fall.” (Oregon Trail song by Woody Guthrie) The Oregon Trail was a 2,170-mile east-west large-wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail in the united states that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. The free land in Oregon lured settlers from Independence, Missouri to Oregon. The Oregon Trail was an important part of American history. There's many things to talk about for the Oregon Trail. But I will be talking about the trail/pit stops, supplies, and the states. The trail/pit stops. In 1843, The Oregon Trail happened. They of course needed a place to rest, for example. Fort Kearny . . Established in 1848, Fort Kearney was the 1st fort built to protect the settlers on the Oregon-California-Trail. It also served as a home station for pony express riders and pawne scouts, it was an important stage station, and it sheltered crews building the union pacific railroad. Independence Rock.

The rock derived its name from a party of fur trappers who camped and celebrated independence day near the rock on July 4, 1830. Eventually, thousands of emigrants camped at the foot of this 1,900 feet long by 850 feet wide granite outcrop. South pass, A 20-mile-wide, gently sloping gap in the rocky mountains, was perhaps the most important landform along the emigrant trails. It opened the west to settlement by providing a route over the continental divide that wagons could negotiate. Power words: Furtrappers= A person who hunts animals using snares and/or traps. Supplies In1843, Oregonhad freeland to claim and peopleinIndependence, Missouri wanted somefreeland. But they needed to supply up with supplies. You would need some oxen you know to pull the wagon. duckest newsela wikipenidia.org I am telling you about the Mexican American war. The war started in1846/But then the war ended in 1848. Where it happens, California , Mexico and Texas , but the war started in 1861,1865. Why because they had wanted savile's for the war so they could have all the land for themselves. who started the war Jeffson but he also came back to the Military because they had lost the war. Now telling the story about Jefferson davis. He was born on June 3rd 1808 and like’s in Kentucky. Sad Fact died on Dec 6th in 1889 but in New orleans louisiana. When they lost him he came back to them in 1846 and was the leader again . He wants to look after Robert E. to win the war. Cool facts . Jefferson was the 3rd president.was known as a president but as a confederate. .1889. Jeffson Davis had gone to boarding school, Local school. But Jeffson davis was also giving slaves to different country and sell them for money. Why does jefferson davis want to like Robert E. Because he was in the American civil war. Why did war start? Because of this person . Jeffson Davis, Jame k.polk ant. They needed to own Texas because they promised them and took over their land they owned them 3 million dollars. Then they had to pay more than they did for their action. And 1846 conflict started. But us people that are american people were the war starters. That means me too. Then war also started in 1821 when Mexico owned Spain , Texas they also had their own settlements. The main part that i am saying is that a lot of people have died. But also us people started war to make Kansas city. But we didn’t pay people so we had to die then. But it is also important that you know not to go in war because you are killing thousands of people.

Territorial Expansion This is Jefferson here with hudson for the news today the news for room 103 is that they have been working hard on researching the territorial expansion. Now with hudson to tell you all about this topic, Hello everyone I am hudson in the 5th grade I was researching cummunashon and moving around back in 1849. This is one of the most interesting things I did in non-fiction writing. Cummunashon and Moving around By Hudson Have you ever sent a text? Or road in a car, have you ever wanted to know what that looked like in the olden days? The telegraph was made in Britain but someone remade it in us, The pony express was the best way to send mail to people, and it went from Missouri to Florida in 11 days, the old best way was 25 days, the rail road was made to get to Florida from Missouri in the few hours making travel much faster it started getting built around the time of the gold rush. . The Poney express was a way to give mail the fastest way before the telegraph. It took 11 days to send mail with the pony express the old way took 25 days. The pony express lasted one year and a half. The horses had a pouch that carried mail. It was for the mail not to stay put in the 11 days on the road. They refreshed their horse every 10 to 15 miles, and they

refreshed it every 75 to 100 miles. This information was found at, https://www.nps.gov/poex/learn/his toryculture/the-first-ride.htm#:~:text =The%20Pony%20Express%20was %20set,reac hed%20Salt%20Lake%20City%2C %20Utah. The poney express was a massive help in sending mail it only lasted a bit tho. 2 The Telegraph The telegraph was a way to send morse code being made in Britain and someone else recreated it we made this one of the best ways of compunction back in 1849, it was a way to talk to people from Missouri to Florida in jest a Z

few minutes. But the exact time was 3 to 2 and a half minutes which was, way faster than the pony express. It made the pony express go out in only 2 days. This may not look useful for our day and age but it was the best way to send messages from that time, we have phones now but they used the telegraph for accessible communication back in the olden days. 3 The railroad was a way to get from Missouri to Florida in a few hours, this was the fastest way back at the time taking around 4 to 5 hours it was an Amazing way of moving from place, to place. It was a huge hit but the people who were building it were racist not letting other people build. The railroad was getting made when the gold rush was happening. most people just made it to orgain and people who went to the gold rush didnt really get much they spent so much money on other things like food and water and splice that they needed.

I hope you liked learning about the territorial expansion this was a long journey to get to where we are it was fun to have time to research for all the people going to see this I liked doing it you should when you can next time on. It was called 'Westward Expansion'. Westward expansion lasted less than a century but even so a lot of people passed away. In this article I will teach you how and why it was so dangerous. The dangers that I will be teaching you are diseases, wagons, and native Americans. DANGERS OF THE JOURNEY

N O . 1 Diseases First up is diseases. Back in the 1800s, doctors and medicines were still in their early ages of development, meaning if you or someone you or someone in your family caught an illness or disease, they would most likely pass away in the next few days. There were plenty of fatal diseases and illnesses, including cholera, measles, and tuberculosis. Cholera Cholera is a fatal disease that you can get from drinking or eating contaminated food or water. Cholera is not contagious, but if your camp eats the meat of a diseased animal or drinks from contaminated water, it will spread through the camp quickly. Measles Measles is a very contagious and deadly illness. When you catch measles, it can usually be spotted quickly, as there is a rash. It is believed that Christopher Columbus brought measles with him from Spain. Tuberculosis Tuberculosis is also an extremely contagious disease. It mainly affects your lungs, but can also affect other organs, such as your brain or your spine. Tuberculosis was one of the few illnesses that had a cure or medicine. The medicine was a laxative made of mercury and calomel.

N O . 1 Wagons Next, the danger of wagons. During westward expansion, wagons were the most common form of transportation. Weighing up to 425 lbs. and being very durable, they were very useful as well. With their substantial weight, if it fell on you or you got trapped underneath the wheels, you would probably pass within the next week. Native Americans Next up is the dangers of native Americans. Many people who study or have studied westward expansion, believe that native Americans were the leading cause of death. There may not be any records proving their opinions but people believe that it is because the native Americans killed all of the people who witnessed what had happened.
