hateau Elan Winery & Resort is many things - it’s a resort, a place to experience luxury, partake in exquisite dining, and make memories through a

variety of activities, but first and foremost, Chateau Elan is a winery. Every year, Chateau Elan produces tens of thousands of bottles of over 30 different unique, awardwinning types of wines, spanning from sparkling to reds to whites to muscadines and everything in between, all produced under the direction of the Chateau’s greatest asset, Simone Bergese. Simone’s work is extremely intricate and demanding all throughout the year, but perhaps the most vital annual timeframe with no room for error is from mid-August to early November, otherwise known to winemakers as the prime harvest season for grapes. Originally from Ceresole d’Alba, Italy, Simone Bergese knows everything there is to know when it comes to producing any variety of wine imaginable. Bergese holds a degree in oenology and viticulture from the Turin University in Northern Italy, and has worked as the chief winemaker in prestigious wineries across Italy and America since 2003. Simone began his journey at Chateau Elan in 2012, and he has paved the path for the winery’s mass success that it currently holds. Since Simone’s arrival, Chateau Elan has multiplied its wine production by six times, making it one of the largest wine producers on the East Coast. Bergese is also to thank for more than 300 prestigious awards that Chateau Elan has won in wine competitions all over the United States. His plans for the winery’s future are to keep exploring new possibilities in order to enhance the current portfolio of native and vinifera varieties, all while remaining in accordance with his strict and successful winemaking philosophy. Simone has established an ideology at Chateau Elan’s winery where intuition and experience will consistently trump textbook winemaking rules. This applies to the entire winemaking process, but is vital to keep a priority during harvest season. Even if instructions state to harvest a strain of grapes at one time, Simone can remarkably look at a cluster of grapes and instinctively identify when will be the choice time to harvest it for the finest and boldest results possible. In an environment like North Georgia where it can be freezing in the morning, scorchingly hot in the afternoon, and thunderstorming at night all within the same day, it’s

crucial to be able to tell when a grape is ripe by its look and feel, rather than just it’s time spent on the vine. However, despite this being an incredible and necessary talent to make award-winning wines, that’s only a small fraction of the process. There’s

a

vast

amount

of

scientific

knowledge and preparation that goes behind the growing and harvesting operations. “We analyze the sugar content and acid concentration” of a grape before harvesting, Simone said. “When we taste, we look for aromatic precursor presence.” Grapes for Chateau Elan’s different wines are mostly grown on the resort’s vineyards, but some specific strains are grown in different regions across both Georgia and California, so it’s important to distinguish and understand the differences between the areas’ differing geographies, soils, and climates. Georgia’s soils vary little with red-clay dominating and loamy/sandy loam textures making up most of the rest. Everyone that’s ever lived in Georgia for a period of time knows that the weather can be summed up by two words: unpredictable and erratic. This makes climate a big hurdle to overcome in both the growing and harvesting processes, which is where experience and instinct become essential to the job and Simone excels year after year without flaw. When it finally becomes time to harvest the annual 400 tons of grapes from the vines, there’s two methods to get the task done. First, mechanical harvesters are typically used to acquire the bulk of the grapes. These machines are cost-effective and quick, however they’re often a little too quick, as they are sometimes rough and imprecise. Mechanical harvesters also give winemakers an overwhelming amount of fruit to convert at once, which increases the likelihood that some grapes may expire before entering production. The other method is hand-harvesting, which is much more delicate on the fruit and gives winemakers a much steadier flow of product to convert into wine. The only drawback of hand-picking is that it’s a much lengthier process than using machines, and it costs a lot more to pay individuals to do so. Regardless of the method used to harvest, the grapes make

their way off the vines one by one until every last one is

Chateau Elan’s notorious upscale chophouse, Marc Restaurant, offers one of the most delectable and elegant dining experiences in the southeast. Helmed by the chef, Justin Kurtz, there’s no denying that each plate is crafted with intense care, only with the finest ingredients possible. For this year’s restaurant week, Kurtz worked tenaciously to create for guests some of his most sought-after dishes, starting off the feast with a choice of either a delicious grilled shrimp bruschetta topped with marinated tomatoes & basil with avocado crostini, or an autumn-inspired butternut squash agnolotti with maple bacon & sage cream. Following a guest’s choice and enjoyment of a restaurant-week appetizer, they found themselves with another decision to make. For the event’s entrees, Kurtz prepared a savory braised lamb served with herby farro rice, blistered haricot vert, and rosemary sherry jus. The second option for the entree was fresh seared scallops, served atop black fettuccine and garnished with smoked bacon - cream, butternut squash and spinach. Many guests recall that making the choice felt impossible, but attendees’ taste buds fell in love regardless of what they settled upon. Finally, each guest’s feast was wrapped up with a heavenly classic cheesecake served with a zesty fresh berry compote. Each patron was guaranteed to walk away full, happy, and dreaming of Kurtz’s dexterity in the kitchen, and that promise was fulfilled. Throughout the year, Marc’s menu rotates with dishes that compliment each season, while still including a wide variety in order to satisfy any diner’s palette. No matter how frequently you visit, there’s bound to be something you have yet to try, and it’s safe to say that you will never find yourself disappointed with your selection. A dining experience at Marc is memorable for more than outstanding cuisine - the restaurant itself is impressively designed to embody and portray the luxury of the establishment as guests overlook acres upon acres of the South’s most luscious vineyards. With a full bar offering the Chateau’s own wines, a selection of beers, and some of Marc Bar’s own crafted cocktails, there’s no better place to kick back and indulge in both one of a kind beverages and delectable foods. Paddy’s Irish Pub is famously known for being built in Ireland, broken down, shipped to Georgia, and reassembled at Chateau Elan. It may sound crazy, but this happened because the owner visited the pub in Ireland and fell in love with it so much that he quite literally had it shipped back home, and Chateau Elan couldn’t be prouder to be the forever home of a genuine Irish pub. Paddy’s is the ideal place to kick back, have a drink, indulge in an Irish-inspired dish, and hang out, share a laugh, and catch up with friends and family. With a menu consisting of several pub classics alongside authentic Irish dishes, there’s bound to be something for everyone to love, even those who are less adventurous when it comes to trying new foods. Paddy’s is known for having frequent live music shows, some of the highest quality pub food in the southeast, and a lively and inviting atmosphere. Paddy’s Irish Pub serves Chateau Elan’s wines, a broad selection of both rare and standard beer, and unique Irish-inspired cocktails. If there’s anywhere on the vineyard to let loose and have fun, it’s Paddy’s. This past restaurant week at Chateau Elan, Paddy’s Irish Pub offered a tempestuous plate of three authentic Irish appetizers, starting off with celtic scallops, which consist of fresh U20 scallops, southern country succotash, and petit crest salad. Secondly, the Pub featured bangers & mash, an Irish classic which consists of a sausage cut in 2 served with Guinness gravy, duchess potatoes, and buttered peas. Finally on the plate was 3 ounces of smoked haddock with the skin on, flavored with candied bacon bits, ale beurre blanc, potato crisps, and chives. This plate of appetizers was the perfect opportunity for restaurant week guests to try new things without committing to an entire order. Guests were treated to an expansion of their palettes as they tasted a whole new culture with Paddy’s appetizer sampler, and several claimed that this taster introduced them to one of their new favorite dishes that they otherwise would have never known existed. If you missed out on Paddy’s appetizer sampler at this year’s restaurant week, the items are each available on Paddy’s menu for a full order, and be sure to visit Paddy’s at next year’s festivities to treat yourself to another variation of the location’s fantastic Irish cuisine.

Restaurant week guests were quick to indulge in Dolby’s mastery, and could not get enough of the flavorful sampler. Multiple groups of guests even ordered another plate in order to extend their feast, as the idea of it coming to an end was a dreadful thought. If you missed out on Dolby’s genius this past restaurant week, be sure not to miss the next, but visit Fleur de Lis in the meantime to experience and enjoy it yourself. Le Petit uses only 1000 Faces Coffee, a local, Athens-based roaster, because of how immensely fresh, rich, and downright delicious their coffee beans make each and every cup. 1000 Faces has earned several awards for their heavenly tastes and sustainable practices, which Le Petit values highly in their products. Medicare is something that everyone needs at some point in their life, and there’s not often much information out there to help people make those big decisions. At Medicare Man of Georgia, Robin Templeton and her daughters are the experts in all things related to Medicare. They’ll guide you through the entire process, before, during, and always after. They’ll answer any questions, get to know all about you and your needs, and save you as much time and money as possible through a process that doesn’t need to be so complicated.

You’ve read The Enthusiast, now meet the publication that makes it happen. Southern Distinction Magazine, based out of Athens, Georgia, has been bringing quality content to the Southeast for over 20 years and is thrilled to have picked up The Enthusiast and two other publications in the Braselton area. JT STRATFORD

CITY OF SUWANEE

THE SPECULATOR

While some have had their retirement planned for years, retirement for the majority entails an overwhelming load of important decisions, and it may feel impossible to know where to start. JT Stratford’s Gregory Wilson shares how he has advised hundreds of clients over the years to swiftly get through this process, as well as his own view on how the entire process, in its own way, is a work of art. Having an investment advisor by your side is the smartest way to get you retired as painlessly as possible.

The once-quaint city of Suwanee is now a bustling epicenter for food, businesses, events, and most notably, art. Elaborate planning has gone into the city’s Town Center, which hosts dozens of permanent and temporary works of art, as well as several art-related festivals and events that bring in thousands of visitors every year. Suwanee’s SculpTour is a recurring, 22-monthlong exhibition that is currently on its seventh and largest occurrence yet. With a wide range of art styles on display, a visit to Suwanee has something for everyone to appreciate.

Everyone’s lives are full of unique passions, obstacles, and experiences, but no matter who you are or what you’ve been through, it all comes down to money. There are several different perspectives that one can choose to take when making financial decisions, but nothing is ever black and white when it comes to money. Ryan Hendrix of State Farm discusses how the worldwide anxiety over money and inflation affects today’s society and provides his advice on how to handle the stresses that come with everything regarding money.

Another device that has taken over in the industry— CoolPeel® CO2 Laser, is now part of About Face Skin Care’s game-changing treatments. “This laser technology is the gold standard for improving skin texture, brown spots, large pores and sun damage,” says Chrissy. “The traditional CO2 Laser was very aggressive and required that clients tolerate many weeks of downtime with redness and sun avoidance,” explains Chrissy. “Cartessa, the makers of CoolPeel® CO2 Laser, developed this platform to deliver a very fast pulse that does not heat up the surrounding tissues. Clients can expect 48 hours of redness, like a mild sun burn effect, and then enjoy tighter, brighter and smoother skin. Since the treatment is less aggressive, we recommend a series of one per month for a total of three treatments. Makeup may be applied after 24 hours, and clients should be careful with too much sun exposure for a bit. CoolPeel® CO2 Laser is great for all skin types.” In

anything you can dream of into our hundreds of style shoots over the years. At Southern Distinction, we typically put together one to three style shoots nearly every week of the year to consistently have fresh, trendy images to use in our publications. We have successfully orchestrated hundreds of style shoots to capture the core essence of various weddings, restaurants, bars, chefs, resorts, events, advertisers, and any other occasion that has even hinted at requiring fresh imagery. The Southern Distinction team has never, and will never rely on outside help for gathering a team to bring a style shoot to life. This is because we select every moving part from our own contacts, with whom we have built genuine and trusting relationships throughout decades of working creatively and tirelessly within the area and surrounding communities. Most recently at Southern Distinction, we’ve been tirelessly working on creating content for our three additional publications Chateau Elan’s The Enthusiast , Traditions of Braselton , and Del Webb at Chateau Elan’s The Associate to create timeless shoots and to produce the very best publications on the market. One of our most recent endeavors was for our upcoming 2023 bridal issue, which was based on the four elements—Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Each of these four elements has an entirely unique and contradicting energy and personality, which we strove to portray through this piece. The Southern Distinction team accomplished all of the planning, mood boards, and styling for The Elements shoot in-house over a brief period of time. Following extensive planning, the shoot was helped to be brought to life by an all-local team of very talented individuals that we’ve worked alongside for years. The incredible photography was all shot by the brilliant Jessica Hodge, who owns Elegant Jayde Photography. After having a daughter and emphasizing to her the vitality of self-confidence, Jessica quickly realized that her perspective could help the countless number of people out there that struggle to love themselves, and thus Elegant Jayde photography was born. Jessica’s passion is helping her clients feel and radiate confidence through boudoir-inspired shoots for all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, ages, and nationalities. Elegant Jayde is based out of Elbert county and specializes in bold and daring photographs to last and be shared for generations. The stunning, intricately detailed hair and makeup that went onto all four models were done by none other than the gorgeous and gifted women at Blonde Magnolia salon in Jefferson, Georgia. Blonde Magnolia, operated and owned by the lovely Leanna Langford, specializes in a myriad of beauty remedies, from hair and makeup to microblading, and is the exact definition of a girl’s best friend. Blonde Magnolia has gotten hundreds of brides ready to walk down the aisle on their special day and has brought confidence and smiles to the faces of thousands that have been simply seeking a change. Additionally, I thought about the relationships I have had with clients over the years and what really mattered to them. The best way I can describe it is that money is just a vehicle. Just a way to get there, just like a jar of paint and a brush. Now, what “you” do with that jar of paint and brush is where the magic happens. The money, (the vehicle) matters of course, but it is really all about the painting that you create.
