From the Pastor/De Parte del Pastor Christmas Day is here! The Season of Advent and weeks of prepara on to receive our Lord passed quickly. I hope it was a produc ve and meaningful me for each of you. Our minds now turn to the wonder and joy of the Incarna on of Jesus – the Word of God made flesh for our sake. Hopefully, the days of Advent have been good ones for us in taking at least some me to pause and reflect on the mystery we are celebra ng today. How great, how beau ful, how blessed we are that the Lord became like us, except in sin, so that we might become more like Him. That is our goal and our hope. I am sure the past weeks have been busy. Maybe even a li le stressed. However, it is important that we now stay fully focused on ‘becoming more like Him.’ As we move forward from this sacred celebra on and into the new-year, let us con nue to think of others and be kind to one another. Kindness and though ulness toward others helps us on our path to holiness. Another way to draw closer to Jesus is to look and examine your Christmas manger or crib. Examine the features and expressions on the Holy Family, on the shepherds, and on the kings. Imagine your own expression if you were there! Imagine the wonder and awe of what this li le child can do for your life!! As you look at this scene, pray this li le prayer: Lord, we pray before this Christmas crib, and welcome the feast of the birth of the Holy Child. Call forth the child from within each of us; cause us to wonder and to rejoice again in this most ancient feast. With the shepherds we come to the birth of Christ, seeking a simple celebraƟon. The greatest giŌ will be ourselves given to you, Our God, and to each other. May the star of Bethlehem, which shone brightly over the first crib, stand guard over us filling us and all the earth with light and peace. My sincere wishes are extended to each of you for a Blessed, Holy, and Peace-Filled Christmas Season! And a Happy New Year filled with God’s blessings! See you in church.
In Gra tude Always, Fr.
Javier Corral Although we o en wish people a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, we rarely use the words "hope" or "full of hope.” People seem to find it difficult to have hope for the future—for the world or even for themselves. Hope is indeed a rare commodity and people are some mes wary about hoping too much, so as not to be disappointed. In our modern world, with all the violence, fear, destruc on, division and sin we have seen in the recent weeks and months, there seems to be li le room for hope. However, as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, recipent of the Nobel Peace Prize, said, "hope is to be able to see that there is light despite the darkness." Pope Francis has o en said: "Do not let them rob you of hope." Hope is the opposite of despair and yet it is more than a simple desire for something be er. Hope is a fundamental Chris an quality, but it is not individualis c. We should not want hope simply for ourselves. We should not hope that things improve only for oursleves and those around us. Hope is something we are called to bring into the world in the name of Christ. If we want to be people of hope, we must also be agents of hope. When we follow the call of Christ and seek to bring hope into the lives of others - both material and spiritual hopethen we have real hope. What we do for other people - in simple or some mes demanding ways - is sow hope for the future. There are those who cannot feel hope for themselves or their families, perhaps because they live in depriva on or because they are refugees from violence. For them, we can bring hope in the name of Christ, who was born in the stable in Bethlehem. As He came into our world to bring hope to places of hopelessness, light in the midst of darkness, so too can we bring that hope. Perhaps this year we can sincerely wish each other hope. Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2017! Blessings, Fr. Javier Corral 4
